Weekend getaways to Anderson Valley are a MUST for wine and nature lovers. It was the second time I stayed at a Sheep Dung property (http://www.sheepdung.com/) and this time, we stayed in The Breezeway at The Other Place in Boonville. An idyllic secluded location perched high on the ridge above Boonville, perfect for 4 people and dogs, it makes for a wonderful overnight retreat spot. The two master suites are separated by a breezeway, with the fully stocked kitchen and living room in the main house on the right. Last time, I stayed at the Glass House at Long Valley Ranch, and that house was even bigger and more beautiful, but the Ukiah location made it less convenient for wine tasting. The Other Place is in a perfect location - it's right next to the little cute town of Boonville, and just a few miles away from all my favorite wineries, including Goldeneye and Toulouse. The floor to ceiling windows provide a panoramic view of the gorgeous valley below. There are adirondack chairs and hammocks set out in the large yard so you can relax with a glass of wine and watch the sunset in the warm evening. Cell phone reception is super spotty - I actually couldn't get any from the house, so you might want to bring a calling card or laptop if you need some form of communication. And take advantage of the BBQ grill and modern kitchen. Go to the store and bring food to cook a few meals while you're there. Oh, how I totally wish this place was my actual home!

We stayed at the Buckeye with our dogs, including a handicapped one. As a getaway for the dogs, this place is just about as perfect as you can imagine. We rarely go anywhere and when we do, we are always trying to find the ideal place to stay with the dogs: somewhere nice, secluded so we don't have to worry about leashes or bumping into other people/dogs, lots of land for them to roam. We've finally found the spot. The Other Place is a community of 4 "cottages". The first cottage, called the Creekside, is at the bottom of the hill. It has a feeling of separateness from the other 3 cottages, which are higher up the hill. There is a little pond (perfect size in my opinion) with a 1-person kayak that you can use and which you can or your dogs can have a swim. The pond is next to an old rundown barn that I imagine kids would love to play hide-n-seek in. The pond and barn are like the "common area" for the remaining 3 cottages. It's about a 5-10 minute walk from any of those cottages. Each of the cottages is fully fenced around 2 acres. Except for the Creekside, the cottages each sit perched on top of separate ridges. The Buckeye has 3 rooms: 1) the main room, which includes the full kitchen, a small eating area, and the living room, 2) the bedroom, and 3) the bathroom, which has a big tub and separate shower. The main room has a doorway to outside on each end; there's a 3rd doorway in the bedroom. The main room faces the hill so it's the warmest room. The bathroom faces the ridge overlooking the valley so it gets a ton of breeze. The bedroom is in the corner between the 2 so it also gets a good amount of breeze. The breeze helps to keep the cottage from getting too hot. The weather forecast while we stayed there (beginning of Oct) said highs in the upper 80's, lows in the mid 40's. We were worried about it getting too hot, and then getting too cold. But it never did. It was just about perfect, and I think that's in large part because of the layout and positioning of the cottage on the ridge. One thing that would've been nice to have was a ceiling fan in the main room, just to help circulate the air in that room more, particularly after using the oven which emitted a gassy smell. Although I'm sure the owners didn't have it in mind, the Buckeye is really handicapped dog-friendly. The floors are textured stone throughout. This was nice for our 2-legged dog as he's unable to walk on slippery surfaces. There is only a single step, and a very low one at that (couple of inches), at the doorways, making it easy for him to come in and out whether in his wheelchair or out. The floor plan throughout the cottage is spacious, so he (about 30 lbs) was able to navigate the entire place in his wheelchair without knocking into things. I especially loved how there are large windows on virtually every wall so even if the dogs are outside and you're inside, you can still see them most of the time. The only non-handicapped dog friendly thing about the place was the side with the ridge. There is a steep, though pretty short, slope. Most 4-legged dogs could run up and down the slope without problems. But we were afraid our handicapped dog would fall over it while in his wheelchair. It would have been nice to have some fencing there to block off the slope. There were lots of tall, dry weeds on the hill during this time, but the owners very thoughtfully mowed down the weeds immediately surrounding the cottage as well as all around the pond. So we didn't have to worry about walking through tall weeds with foxtails and burrs, unless you went off the trails. If you have a long haired dog, you'll probably still have to pull some weeds off their coat though. Note that the grill is charcoal and you might have to bring your own charcoal. Other than salt & pepper, there are no condiments so bring your own ketchup and cooking oil. The fridge was nicely stocked with wine, apple cider, milk, and granola mix. There is no toaster oven, but there is a microwave, oven, stove, toaster, and coffee pot. Bring your own household cleaner like Simple Green if needed b/c I didn't see any. The place is equipped with central heat and air, satellite tv and stereo system. Wish there had been a comfy couch in the main room instead of the dual lounge chairs, which we didn't find very cozy. The bed is also on the super firm side, which we got used to. The walls and bathroom ceiling could use a good wiping, and there were stains around the toilet rim, visible only when standing in front of the sink, that grossed me out, but the bf says I have "bathroom issues." Overall, an awesome place for the dogs, which is the whole point for us. Tons of local wineries and several small town eateries and even a couple of farm stands for those who want to explore the area. I think we have finally found our ultimate dog vacation destination. Here's a video of our trip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqIg_gc1W4U

The road to the other place is almost impossible to find. Look for this on the right hand side of the road.

This looked like a great place to take dogs. But let me tell you... NOT in the middle is summer when all the grass is dead. We went beginning of August and I should have known better! It was super dry, and the second I let me dogs out of the car to run around they were absolutely covered in burrs (and ticks). It was a huge disappointment to have to clean them off every time we went outside. We stayed at the Creekside. Again, because it was August the creek next to the house was totally dry. Another disappointment. Also, the Creekside house does not have a couch nor a bathtub. Two things that should be staples when going somewhere to relax! So, I would maybe consider going here again, in the spring, and to stay at one of the other houses that are more secluded, like the Oaks or the Breezeway. You have been warned!

I almost don't want to review this place b/c I want to keep this paradise to myself. But it's too beautiful not to share. Rented "The Oaks" for 3 nights for some peace and quiet and so my dogs could run free and have fun. My goal was not to see another human the entire time I was there, and except for my run to town for food, I was successful. The cottage was beautiful. The owners thought of everything, including doing an outstanding job of "doggie-proofing" the place. If you're worried about all those big windows and no curtains, don't be. There seriously is no one to see you. I didn't do any of the things to do around and in Boonville, but there's actually a surprising amount of stuff to do for a small town. And btw, THANK YOU to the person who posted the picture of the turn-off from 128. Without your photo, I wouldn't have found the place. Word of advice if you're going: Flip through the photos on here till you get to the one with all the house numbers so you'll know where to turn off. I will definitely be back, and next time it'll be for a full week! P.S. If you have elderly dogs like I do, you might want to bring some extra blankets or towels or mats to lay down on the tile floor. Tile floor is an extremely smart decision in keeping a cottage nice for a zillion visiting pet owners, but for the old guys, the slipping and sliding can mean bad news. Luckily, I had brought a BUNCH of extra towels and extra sheets that I use for car seat covers, so I just put them down in strategic places to help my dogs get some traction. Just FYI!

Took our dog to Sheepdung property early August for a small weekend vacation. Our dog was sooo happy we wish we could have stayed longer. The Creekside house was well equipped with everything we needed. We received a welcome bottle of wine that was delicious. Everything was clean. Views are amazing. The yard was huge and entirety fenced in. Not much water in the creek but that did not bother us much as our dog went for a swim in the pond - which is a few minutes drive from the Creekside house. Creekside is the first house when you arrive at "The Other Place" and is within walking distance (about 15 mins or less walk) to Anderson Valley Brewery, Pennyroyal farm, and Foursight wines (all dog friendly) I cannot wait until our next visit.

I have found my inner peace and it came to me on a hilltop overlooking the Anderson Valley. We have rented both the Buckeye (perfect for 2 people) and the Breezeway (better suited for 4) a few times and have never been disappointed. The Bennetts have created a relaxing, modern outdoor retreat where you can take your dog and explore the 500+ acres. The cottages have nice touches like granola, milk, coffee, tea, juice, and a bottle of wine (usually Husch chenin), big fluffy towels, first aid kits, and music/book library. The cottages are comfortable, stylish, ecologically built, and well-equipped. The baths, especially the soaking tub in the Buckeye with an amazing sound system and view of the valley, are on the level of a high-end hotel. Great equipment in the kitchens and Weber grills at each cottage. Each cottage is on about 2 acres of pasture-fenced land (great for letting the dogs be dogs) that opens up to the rest of the property. Perfect for a vacation where you want to get outdoors, taste wine (not too far away from GoldenEye and Navarro, plus smaller to-be-discovered wineries), enjoy quieter relaxation, and not leave the dog at home. In fact, it's almost a better vacation for your dog with all the great wildlife smells and places to explore. The first time we visited, Porter and Ashley chased jackrabbits and deer, found a hawk's nest, tried to herd sheep (on the border of the ranch next door), and played unlimited fetch in the pond. They woke us up each morning at daybreak to go outside (these are dogs who love their cushy beds), and refused to get in the car when we left (Porter refused to jump into the car and Ashley - older and in need of assistance - pushed herself away from the car twice with her front legs). Advance planning is required because they fill up the reservation calender well in advance and you need to take provisions with you.

    Catch me if you can!

For #300 I wanted to dedicate a review to not only a 5-star place, but a place my pack absolutely loves. We stayed in The Buckeye cottage at The Other Place and it was perfect in every way. It's not too far from the SF Bay Area to drive to, a large acre or more of space around the cottage is fenced in for the dogs to run and play leash-free, and all the comforts of home are included for the humans. We put the pack on leash when we hiked the areas outside of cottage fence, but they loved exploring the trails and swimming in the pond. It was hilarious to watch them try to reach us while we were in the kayak. Hubby was happy to have a vacation where I (sight-seeing-sally) was forced to stay in one place. When we were not hiking with the dogs, he slept in till noon and snoozed out on the chairs during the afternoon, while I prepared meals with the food we brought in our coolers, read books, and took photographs of the dogs and the beautiful scenery. If necessary, you can take a quick drive into town and have a couple meals there, and you can also drive out about an hour to the coast. One the most beautiful experiences is being out here at night: it is so quiet and dark, yet the stars are incredible. The Milky Way seems to pass overhead close enough to touch! The peace is amazing -- until the dogs spot wildlife scampering in the night and start a barking frenzy. (Because of this my only request would be to have some type window covering to pull down over the bedroom windows when we are ready to turn in.) Our female dog has a slightly nervous, skittish Border Collie streak in her, but here at The Other Place she played each day until she was exhausted and seemed so relaxed. When we started packing up, she looked at us as if we were crazy people. When we all got in the car, she hung back and did not want to leave her new home. Poor girl -- she was visibly upset. We promised her and her brothers many more return visits before she finally allowed hubby to pick her up and take her away from The Perfect Place.

Happy Sam at "The Oaks" cottage

While I loved the website and the vibe, I wasn't sure if I should book right away because it was a bit of a budget stretch on my end. After mulling it over a bit and calling the hosts to discuss their homemade breakfasts, I felt like I could not deny that it was a match, especially with my partner being a person interested in culinary delights as such-- I then booked an early spring weekend at Stoney Bottom. Everything about Stoney Bottom is both meticulously cared for, planned, and attended to, while at the same time peaceful, low key, and truly elegant. The second time we stayed it was with our two kids in the Little House. This time we did more kid friendly activities in Anderson Valley, and there are plenty of them! The Little house gave us plenty of room to spread out and make ourselves at home. The master bedroom is so pretty and the bed itself is amazing (all the beds are really comfy). We could cook dinners there with ease and the kids loved having their own room and the big TV to plop in front of after a day of exploring. Stoney Bottom's location is PERFECT.... its was very walkable to get to town for a bite to eat or pick up some wine from one of the cute stores (we loved Disco Ranch wine shop!!) or wineries like Pennyroyale. The family who runs this B&B are super helpful when you have any questions, but they stay out of your way during your stay. All while making you feel pampered and welcome. This was followed by some outstanding bread with herb butter and caperberries, and local, Mendocino cured king salmon, which was a celiac special! It was delicious and herbaceous with avocado, caperberries and dill. This was followed by the salad greens with asparagus and bresaola. The bresaola was a great compliment to the greens and the asparagus was particularly unique - fresh, crisp, fresh and while not quite asparagus-y they were so good, a bit sweet. They were from Zuckerman Farms in the Sacramento valley. Next was a bowl of noodles and asparagus, ramps, very fresh fava beans (not firm or mushy!) and parsley, or the same over polenta instead of Italian pasta noodles for the gluten-free. It was simple, but fresh and rich and luxurious. Three for three at this point. The end point was duck confit with oranges and kumquats over wild rice with some greens. The duck was perfectly cooked, although a tad too salty. Nonetheless, we cleaned the plates. And, who would have paired rosemary with oranges (?) but it worked. The meal was finished with vanilla ice cream over meringue, topped with lemon curd, and fresh strawberries and rhubarb, both of which were not only fresh but redolent of the flavors that they appear to have otherwise lost. I felt comforted and supported, inspired and emboldened as a leader. Every detail was taken care of and every creature comfort was there! My guests were incredibly happy with the spaces and we had plenty of room for all of us. It's amazing how the land supported such deep work, as if the wisdom of all groups prior to ours had somehow primed and opened up the space for us to take our personal and collective journeys of transformation. You can feel all of the love and care of the owners and all of the stewards of the land who came before. It was magical, sacred, safe, transformative, deep, joyful, peaceful and more. I am still receiving insights for myself and for my group.

She also has a good network of local professionals who were able to assist in the process. Two points on money: California recently made real estate agents' commissions the buyer's concern as well as the seller's, opening them to negotiation. Anne was firm on her commission. The sellers covered it just like the old days. In any case, it was reasonable for our protracted and somewhat complex purchase. Many years ago when we bought a property in San Francisco the primary value that our agent provided was in negotiating the price after we found the property we wanted pretty much by ourselves. This time around, Anne provided general input on our initial offer, but explicitly did not tell us what counteroffers to make. My understanding is that agents in California are expected to not influence price these days. I think we reached an OK agreement.

She was willing to learn about our unique loan situation in order to help us negotiate with the sellers and also to obtain the extra time we needed to get to closing given our long loan process. We appreciated that she was zero pressure when taking us to explore new properties, was reliable for follow-up, and has a "do what it takes" attitude. We're grateful we had her help for our first purchase here in AV!
