Came here for lunch because I saw online that they had a deli. Prices are very reasonable, they have $5 12inch subs during lunch time. The sub was made well, just super dry. I asked the lady for oil and vinegar and she said they don't have any (still don't believe it!) How would a deli that makes subs and sandwiches not have any oil and vinegar, especially when the deli is located in the middle of a grocery store lol. The funny thing is I saw a manager walking around with an associate saying the sales were down this quarter. After a brief visit to the nearby America's Food Basket, this place felt so roomy in comparison. However they were also less populated, both inside and out (meaning cars in their private parking lot). T'was 2 nights before Christmas and the fruit was getting sparse by evening. First before I start my rant I do want to say Thank you Shaws for even being in Hyde Park. I know many grocery store chains tend to avoid low income neighborhoods so I am certainly appreciative of that fact. HOWEVER This grocery store makes me sad. I guess I was so spoiled to being a 5 min walk from the Harvest Coop in Jamaica Plain when I lived there, that entering a large grocery store with hardly any natural foods is really depressing. This Shaws got rid of their Wild Harvest section. They hardly offer any organic produce and much of what is organic is covered in plastic wrap. Nothings really local or labeled where it comes from. One thing I appreciate about the Coop and Wholefoods is that you know where your food comes from - whether that's a farm in MA or all the way in Belize. They used to have a Wild Harvest section but got rid of it. Perhaps the neighborhood didn't support the natural foods market. But some of us really depended on those products. They hardly carry anything for the vegan market (besides vegetables and can beans and tofu). Most of the specialty products I have to still get from the Coop and Wholefoods. Most of the veg products they carry are Morningstar aka so not vegan. They do have a decent Hispanic section though. The other thing that frustrates me is their staff's lack of knowledge about what products they carry. Once I was trying to find Liquid Smoke and no one knew if they even carried it (which they did - I found out an hour later as I was still looking). Other products have also been hard to find. I wish there was better staff education. Obviously again I was spoiled with the coop model at Harvest - a community owned grocery store. When I walk into Shaws I feel like I've left Hyde Park completely. Thank you however for having a Citizen's Bank. I have used that ATM many times. Oh and thank you for all the cheap pasta sales all the time. Though it would be nice if you had healthier options besides white pasta on sale frequently. read more

This has to be one of the worst Shaws I've ever been to. Customer service is non-existent at this place.It's totally disorganized. The on-shift manager hides in their office and the staff is incredibly slow. As if they are on something or just challenged. I would be more lenient if I knew they were challenged, but the staff just seems to be imbeciles. read more

It's a shame. Would have given it a five. Doing business in Hyde Park brought me here. Was pleased to find a clean, well lit and spacious market with very well stocked shelves and selection. A Friday midday. Was delighted to find an item I haven't seen elsewhere. Wanted to buy it. Went to the front of the store. Five registers open. Each with six or seven heavily filled carts in line. No express. No self-check-out. Returned the item to its shelf. Saw the reason for the hold up. Bored cashiers all moving slow as molasses. read more

on their buy 10 of a page of specials get them for $.79 nowhere does it say you must buy multiplies of ten if you buy 13 they want to charge you full price. No where does it say you must buy 10,20 etc If they were the case it should be written in the ad I had soup for Ice Cream as the cashier kept insisting that was the case kept going to courtesy booth finally a manager came over and tried the same talk with me as I wasn't backing down he said I'll accommodate you this time. I've been coming here for YEARS. I got a bag of bread this morning and got home and the bag was split open on the side. I came to bring it back and got in line with a worker named Sue. She didn't greet me. Didn't make eye contact and as i went to ask her a question, before i could finish, she cut me off and told me to go to the customer service desk. Shaws has better food but if i want to be treated like that...I'd rather go to Stop and Shop. At least they don't cut you off before you can finish speaking. Smh. read more

I like several others rating this store, find the products in the store to be very good. But the service is downright terrible. It's hit or miss that the service desk is open, or if it is, there's only one person there, and there doing money transfers that take 10-15 minutes. 80 % of the time there is no express lane, and when there is the cashier doesn't stop people from coming through with more than is recommended for the express lane. I typically go there around noon time and there is almost always a shortage of cashier lines available. I also agree that the deli area is woefully understaffed. It's such a shame, because I really do like the store and their wares. They just need to be more customer-centric. Better managed. read more

I like shopping in this Shaw's because of the great meat dept, especially pork!!!! But turkey and beef too. Antonio is ALWAYS so pleasant and helpful. I like to have him at the check out. The deli staff is very accommodating! Spices are also well stocked! Best market in HP read more

I frequently come to this Shaw's and their sales are decent. The manager at the Bakery is always extremely friendly and helpful whenever I go to that department. The Deli Department has very SLOW service, even when there are only a couple of customers waiting! I don't understand why the clerks feel the need to move sluggishly behind the counter, as if they are trying to kill time off their shift. The majority of Cashiers and Baggers tend to socialize with one another rather than pay any attention to the customer, I find this to be very rude. It happens over and over again. They discuss their lives, gossip, etc... Then won't even look at you or thank you while blindly handing you your receipt. They need to seriously get new carriages !! They are so out-dated. Most of them are broken down. If you turn your carriage to the left, it will go to the right, it's a battle! During the winter of 2010.. Their parking lot was an ice skating rink. I can't believe how everyone would try to tippy-toe to get into the entrance of the store, then hold onto their carriage for dear life when leaving.. which as i mentioned before was hard enough as it is! How hard is it to throw some rock salt down in the parking lot before someone falls and you end up with a law suit? I gave this store 2 stars for their sales.. read more

Avoid any catering...careless and apathetic. Fairly large catering order The kid at the deli counter was disinterested, took my completed form, attached it to a clipboard and said "it'd be taken care of." An hour before the pickup time, I got a message telling me that one of the items hadn't "arrived" and to call them back and pick something else. Upon picking up the order, another item (bacon/scallops) was incorrect also, despite the sheet listing the order still hanging from the clipboard right in the deli. Another deli worker told the kid to grab a couple of boxes from the deli case and "give 'em to him for no charge." Clearly not interested in the catering business. Never again! read more

This past Saturday near 6 pm, I went to the service desk to deposit a check and noticed the lights from this location were off. I then asked an associate if it's closed and he said it should closed by 8 pm. He said let's go ask the manager. He then told the manager - this lady needs help- and walked away. I asked the manager for help and he proceeds to tell me ask the lady at register 8. First of all, as the manager you should page the associate OR go over there and ask her. Since the associate was at an open register she had to finish ringing up about 4 people. When the associate finally finished I even told her your manager should've came to help if you were busy ringing up customers. Managers need to stop acting as if they are too good to help in different parts of the store. Never did he (the manager) once say like sorry for the wait, etc. read more

The staff around the store is great, it's just when you get to the checkout area. Cashiers are always on their phones, even when ringing up your groceries and printing your receipt. One friend of mine told me how the cashier who was charging was texting at the same time. I understand that they are going to be on their phones, but it only takes two minutes to ring up a customer. read more

I always come here with my family to do grocery shopping and we find good sales when it comes to holidays.

I started to work here and quit only after a few weeks. First of all, management is terrible. They don't carry their weight, are lazy, and don't employ proper management techniques for their employees. I was pushed to my comfort limit when an older manager named Don was very innappropriate with me and made me feel violated on one occassion. After that, I was through. Also the other employees are dim witted and follow exactly what their inadequate managers tell them to do, even if it is very wrong. If you are the one person who actually has brains and a backbone, they will do anything to make you quit. Do not work here, and if you have another supermarket to shop at do not support this business. read more

There are never enough cashier lanes open, even during slow periods, and the cashiers don't seem trained to ring up your purchases quickly. Even in the lanes that are open, there are never enough baggers, so that the cashiers also have to bag the groceries, which slows everything down further. I have even abandoned a full shopping cart, walked out, and driven to the nearby Stop & Shop on occasion when the checkout lines were too long and too slow. On top of this, it seems they re-organize the store every few months, so that you never know where to find the item you last purchased a few months ago. I much prefer shopping at Stop & Shop for a quick run, or the Wegmans in Westwood or the Roche Bros in West Roxbury for a big shop. Honestly, Shaws should sent the managers of this store out to observe the competitors for a full day or two at a time to see all the ways they could do it better. read more
