Shawarma Palace might have to take the crown for the best shawarma in Ottawa! As a Torontoian, we have decent shawarma but it doesn't compare to the shawarma in Ottawa. Whenever I'm in Ottawa, this is a spot you got to stop at. I admit it is pricer than other places but the service is friendly and efficient, things that you need at a booming place. I have popped in here for lunch a few times. Just walking anywhere near here will have your mouth watering! The team is very jovial and kind. Even with a mix up (it's always busy! The food is good ha) they are so apologetic strive to please. The restaurant is airy and it is very pleasant to sit by a window on Carling and enjoy the food in the clean restaurant. The portion of one plate is enough for me and my teen. We leave stuffed. It's a bit pricey but it's very flavourf, and not abundantly salty like Shawarma Prince on Merivale. The hardest choice is living between a mouthwatering wrap or a plate! I'm from Toronto and grew up on gyros (with fries in it!), shawarma and pitas but this place does a really good job keeping the meat juicy, sauces tasty and vegetables fresh. read more

Highly overrated for something Ottawa is known for. This was my first shawarma in Ottawa, and after hearing all about how great shawarma here is, I was excited. I ordered the small chicken shawarma, which cost about $7 after tax. I got all the toppings except onions, and also added hummus and tahini. I asked if they had olives for the shawarma, but since they only had olives meant for salads which were pitted, they were nice enough to offer some on the side. I also found that the small size was not quite enough, and I am not one who needs to eat huge portions. However, I did hear that the best location is the one in South Keys so perhaps my experience would be completely different if I went there. Also, I have been told that I should have gotten the platter, except I would definitely need to share it with someone. Maybe next time. Note that they only take cash or debit. Also, this location has a parking lot which is convenient. We ate in, and the tables were reasonably clean. This may be an unpopular opinion, but overall, I felt like the shawarma was very average and nothing special. It tasted perfectly fine, but I don't think it's anywhere near the best shawarma I've ever eaten. Honestly, I think that Montreal and Vancouver make shawarmas better. I made a quick stop here with a coworker who had never had it here before. I had only been once years ago, but I remember it being amazing and jumped at chance to have it again. We both had a small chicken shawarma and a side of potatoes to-go. I opted for just the sandwich and potatoes because I didn't want a drink and it ended up just a bit cheaper than getting the trio combo. I asked for all of the fillings in my shawarma and both garlic and spicy garlic sauce. The only thing different than the last time was the turnips weren't shredded. Maybe they weren't shredded before? Maybe just julienned. Either way, they were definitely cut thicker this time, but everything else was the same as I had remembered it. It was so good that my pickier coworker wished he ordered a large! I asked for a bunch of garlic sauce on my garlic potatoes, too. I wish the potatoes were more flavourful on their own and I had hoped for crispier ones. Garlic sauce was great, though, and had plenty of it for the potatoes. I had to split up my meal and wasn't able to eat it all at once. I highly recommend eating it immediately. Otherwise, it becomes this delicious but greasy, absolute mess, and the bread gets chewy and/or soggy. Fresh is best! read more

The shawarma in every other city pales in comparison to that of Shawarma palace. It is a staple in Ottawa and many utter its name in reverence. I approached the establishment with apprehension, because it was hyped. As haram as this will sound, I left a satisfied little piglet. My husband and I usually opt for a chicken shawarma plate as it's more than enough for 2 people. The mixed plate contains the best of both worlds (chicken & beef), but it's way too much to finish in one sitting. I love every single thing on their plate. Heck, I'd lick the plate clean to get all the garlic sauce. If you're eating for one or don't have a big appetite, then their wraps are just as good! A standard plate contains salad with a bit of light dressing, pickles and pickled turnip. Their potatoes are seasoned perfectly and drizzled with garlic sauce. I usually opt for the brown rice, but there is white rice available. Then there is the meat that they freshly shave off the rotating spit and heap on to your plate! Also, don't forget the glob of hummus you can scoop with the pita they provide. Everything is Halal! What I love about the Carling location is that not only are they generous but their meat is clean (no fat), well-prepared and fresh. I would say the location is comparative in size to the Rideau location, maybe a bit smaller with longer communal tables. There are a lot of take-out orders and turn-over is high so finding a seat isn't difficult most of the time. read more

I always get a combo of garlic ( coz it just so garlicky!! Dang!! ) and tzatziki. The rest is your preference. I've seen people put fries in the shawarma.. Shawarma has a special place in my heart. And Shawarma Palace has a special place in my stomach. I've been a few times, and always get a wrap. The first time I went for a wrap I got the large combo, which comes with the potatoes and a drink. That was a mistake simply because it felt like I had trouble getting out of the door after. Ran about $14 CA, but I can't remember the exact price. Subsequent trips I make sure to get the smaller combo which is still a ton of food, but a lot more manageable. Went with a friend who got the plate, and I have to say it looked like at least two meals worth of food! Great value if you want to save some for another meal. The line may be long at times but thats usually a good thing, since the food is good. they have a good order system so you they don't mess up your order, you can also use the kiosk. This Shawama Palace is one of my favorite. It doesn't beat the one located in South keys but it's a close 2nd. If you come here anytime between 5h30-7pm, be prepared to wait in line to order food. The plate was massive and over-flowing to our delight! The chicken was a bit dry but the beef was perfect. The potatoes and garlic sauce were my favorite. The rice was your usual and so was the salad. The hummus was great too! We shared this one plate and we couldn't even finish everything, that's how much food comes on a single plate! Amazing! I have not been to this location for a while now, and decided to stop by Thursday evening for a falafel platter and small falafel sandwich. The platter came with 5 HUGE falafels, crisp salad, a mound of rice, hummus with two pitas and warm potato's with a mound of garlic sauce on top. I remember now why I love this place so much. Everything has that "home made" taste, from the falafel, to the pink/purple crispy turnips and the amazing garlic sauce. The falafel sandwich was yummy, but instead of garlic sauce, they put hummus and sesame dressing on the sandwich. If you are a garlic lover like I am, make sure you ask for garlic sauce on your falafel sandwich. One thing I have to point out is that the service is pleasent and the emloyees are happy. They were all smiling!! I love the turnips and I asked for extra on the platter and they were very generous, so don't be scared to ask for extra toppings at this place! ;) Cashier was super friendly and personal with each customer. I came with my family during lunch time. It was not busy at all. I am a very picky person unlike my family. I ordered a SMALL SIDE of garlic potatoes and a SMALL SIDE of beef shawarma. They gave me a small plate PILED with each, which I didn't ask for. They CHARGED ME $17.79 for a SMALL SIDE of garlic potatoes and a SMALL SIDE of beef shawarma and a soft drink. My family all got a combo for a sandwich, garlic potatoes, and a drink for $14. My cousin asked them why it was that much and they gave the ridiculous explanation that the side order was a bigger amount than a sandwich. While the beef was admittedly pretty tasty, the garlic potatoes were absolutely disgusting. They were overcooked, far too hard, and bland - No one in my family got halfway through them. I have to admit to having been hungry... but I to be honest, it turned out after all that I didn't really need a large Felafel sandwich to fill the gap! This thing was HUGE! Each sandwich came to about $9.50, and they're really big and stuffed! I do like Felafel to start with and I wanted 3 pieces instead of 2 (that come in the small sandwich). So, the eyes were bigger than the stomach. But it was really really tasty, even if it was a bit sloppy, with bits dropping out! I would definitely get this again. Maybe I should learn to make Felafel at home - that's how much I like it! The pieces were big to begin with. But be prepared when you come here: It's not sit down service, but cafeteria style - you go up to the counter to order your food from a menu displayed where a flurry of staff greets you and prepares the food. They had 3 great big vertical rotisseries set up there with beef and chicken, with lots of choices on the menu. Without a doubt, Shawarma Palace is the best shawarma you can get in Ottawa, huge portions, a killer garlic sauce, and good service. My girlfriend and I shared a large chicken sandwich and a side of potatoes before catching a movie. While I really like the plates, the sandwiches are convenient and the best way to deliver all the flavours into your mouth as once. My mom and I absolutely love this place. We went last night and the line was out the door, which should attest to how good this place is. Despite the long line, they worked fast to make sure everyone was getting served. I ordered a mixed meat plate (which is what I usually get here). The flavours are amazing and portions are huge. The staff is always friendly and kind. At cash the cashier asked if we wanted pita and we said yes, she noticed the pitas she had a cash were cracking so she went to the back and got fresher ones which was very nice. This review isn't about a chicken or beef shawarma, it's about the Falafel. The falafel is an important part of Lebanese food and they just don't do it right. My hubby and I came here after being referred by so many people that it is a good place to eat. The falafel was dry and pasty, the toppings were not fit for a falafel either, as they didn't have tarator (tahini sauce) but instead put us hummus in the sandwich and that is a big no-no. Falafel and tahini sauce go together like pb&j, you can't have a good sandwhich if they're not together. The prices are good, the service was fast but the cashier that night wasn't exactly friendly. The guy making our sandwiches though, he was really nice and jolly. After this I wouldn't ever go back for a falafel again, but I might try their chicken at the downtown location because this location wasn't good aside from the nice sandwich man. Near the top of my list for the best Shawarma place in Ottawa. Although the garlic sauce isn't the absolute best, It is really good! I always order the chicken platter, which comes with deliciously marinated chicken and pita bread, and sides of mouthwatering potatoes, salad, an option of two types of rice (brown or white grain), hummus, and garlic sauce. I always substitute the hummus for more garlic sauce . Although the platter is kind of pricey (nearing $15.00 with a beverage), it really is a lot of food! I always end up taking leftovers home, and having it last me 2-3 meals. The atmosphere is more of a take-out place, but there are many tables for people to sit and eat indoors. I have come there many times and shared platters with friends and family. Great place to have lunch at with company (if you don't mind garlicky-smelling conversations afterwards). A nice place worth visiting, just don't forget to bring lots of gum for afterwards :p read more
