Beef plate ($14.50)
Jordan H.

Excellent Mediterranean food for an excellent value. I noticed a lot of people on Yelp got the shawarma, but my friend and I elected for the beef and chicken plates ($14.50 each). First of all, the portion sizes were very generous -- a single plate could easily serve two. Both meats were cut fresh from slabs of meat hanging behind the counter, so the meat was tender and juicy. Overall the plate was well-balanced and tasty -- filled with pickles, cabbage, lettuce, rice, and a hefty spoonful of hummus. They even threw in two naan breads for each order and complimentary baklava! Not to mention -- the lady behind the counter was very friendly and pleasant to interact with. The inside of the restaurant isn't anything to special -- a couple of tables, bar seating, and a TV that was playing the World Cup. More of a quick to-go spot. Very pleased!

First stop after arriving in Alberta, couldn't have asked for a better quick and affordable lunch. I had the donair wrap and appreciated the toppings (including a pickle!) and the free baklava, truly hit the spot. Also enjoyed some traditional Lebanese coffee to fuel our drive to Banff, reminded me of Israeli "mud" coffee. Would come again - and might literally do so when we fly out of here at the end of our trip. Thanks Shawarma House!

Chicken Shawarma

Very good place to go for a quick bite! The meat is flavorful, decent amount of meat in the shawarma. The owner is a very nice and friendly person, he lets you try the different meat if you haven't been there before and he prepares the food just the way you prefer it. We even got a piece of baklava for free. They offer various salads, shawarma and donairs. Prices are okay as well, $11 for a chicken shawarma, $9 for a beef shawarma.

I hate to do this since I'm not an expert on shawarmas but of the shawarma's I have had in my lifetime, this would have to rank as the worst. I love shawarmas and love all things mediterranean however, the Shawarma House left much to be desired. I tend to just review on taste alone with some influence on service but even if service was horrible but the food was amazing, I would frequent any establishment. I ordered a beef and chicken shawarma salad because I wanted to try a little bit of both meats. The chicken was SUPER dry and the beef was just okay. None of the sides or sauces elevated the flavors unfortunately. The owner (I'm assuming) was super friendly and nice with great service but honestly the food was below par. He offered complimentary baklava and gave a gal in the party a free falafel but I could not get past the meats being so dry. I do believe this place has potential as most of the reviews seem to be glowing. If I were to revisit this place, I'd make sure to come during peak hours where the turnover of food is more regular to avoid dry meat.

Average. Had a donair wrap, bread to meat ratio was too bread biased. Will give another try to confirm it wasn't an off day.

I'm always scared it's going to be overcooked, because at many restaurants the fish usually is, but this was perfectly grilled and well seasoned. The bed of veggies underneath had a really nice, subtle flavor that complemented the fish without overpowering it. I also ordered their banana cocktail, which honestly surprised me. I didn't think I would ever like banana in a cocktail, but it was absolute heaven. Smooth, balanced, and not overly sweet. One of those drinks you think about ordering again halfway through. For food, I also had the braised short ribs, and they were excellent. Super tender, rich, and full of flavor. Definitely one of those comforting dishes that still feels elevated and well executed. The decor deserves its own mention. The space is warm, stylish, and thoughtfully designed, and there's an actual live tree inside the restaurant, which is such a cool touch. You can already tell this place must be incredible in the summer when everything is open and lively. Overall, Porch delivers on food, drinks, and atmosphere. Easily a spot I'd come back to, whether for dinner, drinks, or a special night out.

We saw they were going to open at 11am, and decided to try our luck by getting there right at opening since we didn't have a reservation. We got lucky and got seated right away! - PARKING - Street parking, make sure you take note of how long you paid for! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - The ambiance inside is so nice and airy, with greenery and natural light shining through. There's also a super cute swing area next to the bar area that you can sit. I really liked the overall interior design! The staff was very attentive for our large party throughout our meal. There are bathrooms downstairs as well. - FOOD - Bacon Jam Benedict ($20.00): Loved the flavor combination in this! The sweet savory maple bacon jam worked so well! We upgraded to the fried potatoes ($4.00) and they were pretty tasty. Carrot Cake French Toast ($24.00): We got one to share with the table, and I'm glad we didn't commit because it was just OK to me. I wish there was more mascarpone filling, and also a different sauce than chocolate because it didn't pair well for me. Winter Nights ($19.00): We wanted to get some greens in and chose this salad. I enjoyed the mix of greens and also the fennel salami which gave a salty bite! Truffle Parm Fries ($13.00): We also got this to share with the table and you can't go wrong with these! - OVERALL - Great brunch option if you have a small or large group! Really nice airy ambiance for a nice start to your day.

My colleague and I walked in and we both order the same thing - Chicken Sharwarma. Their prices are more expensive compared to their competitor and the portion is a lot small as well. I don't know what's with the high rating or maybe they just went downhill all of a sudden. The chicken sharwarma: I like how the pita bread is crunchy. The meat isn't seasoned very well. I mean I had chicken sharwarma where it would really stand out. Not much strong flavor in it. I do like the fact that they are generous in sauce. I mean I am a sauce person. The portion size is smaller compared to their competitor for the price paying. Also the chicken sharwarma is very messy to eat. It drips from either end. What's really disgusting is the hair found in my colleagues chicken sharwarma. That was nasty. Well its good that they replaced his half chicken sharwarma and she did try to explain and did apologized. We came in at noon and left at 12:30. Inside the whole restaurant there was only us and another table. I don't know how they can stay in business longer if they are getting this kind of business everyday. I have walked by couple times and they were not busy.

That works just fine for me, I'm not sure I could've had much more than a puff or two of it otherwise. It was my first sheesha experience. I was also the first one there. Cafe Med was busy and I was too afraid to go in by myself. Thank the good Yelp gods for Sarah Louise! She saved me from looking like a creep peeking in the windows for too long. The folks at Cafe Med are friendly people. Our server talked us into some Moroccan Madness (tea) while we waited for the rest of our peeps to arrive. We also snacked on some red pepper hummus and rolled up grape vine leaves (if you've never had them, they're comparable to cabbage rolls in concept... just a different flavour to them). You might also want to try the garlic pizza. As far as sheesha bars go, I have nothing else to compare this one to! So it's got three stars in my books. Mostly because the guy serving our table offered to fill our tea pots up with more hot water, took the pots away and didn't return with them until we inquired about them again. And also because, even though it's a spot to come smoke things, there were times the haze built up enough to burn my eyes for a moment or two. At any rate, the food was pretty cheap, the pipes were just over $10 each and they kept bringing new coals around. From what I gathered, not dropping ashes into the pipe is a bit of an art that Cafe Med has mastered. Overall, a positive experience!
