I was debating if I should eat on 17th ave or go somewhere else after picking up my items that I purchased from Lululemon. I ended up going on Yelp to look for a restaurant. I noticed the high star ratings of Damascus. I couldn't help it but to come here for dinner. The restaurant is super small. It is not fancy. There are 2 high-chair tables and 4 seats at the window. I decided to eat in, instead of bringing it back home. I got the chicken shawarma platter. It came with rice, salad and dipping for the pita bread. It was very tasty. I also tried the baklava. I really liked their baklava. It wasn't too sweet. Prices were not expensive here. This place is great. There are also free parking spots in front of the restaurant. After biking around and grabbing ice cream, I was still famished. I did a quick search of places to eat and a place popped up called Damascus Fine Mediterranean Food. They're slightly hidden in a plaza that houses several different businesses. You can find them beside More Than Subs. We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 2:00pm) for a late lunch. Most customers were grabbing takeout but we decided to stay and eat. They have a few seats by the window otherwise there's tables outside. The menu is up on the side wall; wraps, platters, poutine, salads, dips & appetizers and desserts. The two guys working the front were friendly and chill. There's also a TV inside (they had on junior hockey). - Falafel and rice ($11.00) - you get 5 falafels and all the platters come with salad, pita, garlic dip and assorted pickles. Falafels were cooked to order and came out hot. We actually got two extras as the worker came out and told us to take them. The whole platter was tasty except we found the iceberg lettuce to be of cheap quality. Give us tabbuleh or something more unique. - Ground beef meat pies ($4.50) - I love any meat pies so of course we got one to share. They came out folded into 6 pieces with a side of tahini sauce. Good but not the best I've had. - 2x Baklava - they also brought each of us a complimentary piece of finger roll baklava. Amazing! They were fresh and well balanced. Solid spot to grab a cheap Middle Eastern meal along 17th Avenue. 3.5 stars. read more

I love this place! I am from Georgia ( the state not the country), and this was my first time ever trying this place. I have to say it is worth it! I had the large beef donair ( I had feta cheese, cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and garlic sauce on mine) and the 6 piece baklava. Every thing was so good! Even better is I ordered from DoorDash and everything arrived perfectly! nothing was soggy or messed up. Damascus was such a pleasant experience. The food was absolutely incredible - both the beef and the chicken were incredibly moist and full of flavour. Even the salad packed a punch. I am also pleased with their gluten free options! Their menu also advertised for vegan options, though we did not explore that in our visit. We spoke to the owner as he prepared our meal and he was so kind and obviously passionate about his business. He gave us samples of the chicken, beef, and pickled turnips as we inquired, and then threw in some free baklava (regularly $1 each). I would go back simply for the amazing customer service. One gives it one star for an experience with Uber Eats and another because it was closed and so the angry reviewer decided to one-star them as punishment. THIS is why I hate Yelp sometimes. If you have an issue with Uber Eats or any delivery service, take that to the delivery company. Don't penalize the resto. If you're angry about opening hours, call the resto and complain. Don't one-star them on Yelp. They are still completely and utterly amazing. They now have shish tawouk and I yesterday got a "regular," no fries (ST is usually served with fries inside the bread), topped with garlic sauce, hot sauce, onions, turnip pickles, and tahini. Not at all as amazing as some people have experienced, but okay only. To me it has little to commend it as at all outstanding. In fact, after having had a decent donair there, I left and soon forgot it. The men that run Damascus are very friendly and work hard to please their customers, and their signage is attractive... But I really am not sure what criteria some people use to give such places 4 or 5 stars: when I walk out of a place and don't consider going back, somehow it's a lock in my mind that it's just average and that I'd not return... After all, it's just a formerly-exotic sandwich place, and certainly not at the cuisine level, a term that used to mean that a true chef is nearby on a creative bent to turn people on... If you want more, feel free to check out Beirut Street Food on Fairmount Drive at Flint, or better still, Ali Baba's on 14th Street at 15 Avenue? Delicious food. When I went in for lunch I met the Owner. I had a pleasant conversation with him. He was very friendly with me and the students from Western. The first time I went in the beef was a little dry, but the lamb and chicken were very good. I decided to give it another try and I was glad I did. In my experience most donairs tend to be kidn of soggy, especially by the end, but the donair here was crispy all the way through. Maybe they drain their ingredients better or something? Phenomenal donairs at such a great price. I got a regular sized chicken shawarma and was stuffed; I loved how the pita on the outside got a bit crispy. Came here for lunch and it was perfect. Great service, delicious food, freshly made. Owner is super charismatic and gracious. Really generous portions (I'm a light eater and couldn't quite get through all of mine but it made for really tasty leftovers for dinner). The rice that comes with the shawarma plate is exceptional. Super flavourful and perfectly spiced. Every single thing we had was perfect but I would be happy with even just a bowl of that rice to stuff my fave with. Most people get take-out but there are a few spots to eat in. We stayed there for lunch and got a special treat of baklava dropped off for after the meal. This is probably the best I've ever had. I usually find it too sweet for me but this was just perfect. Would definitely eat here again! This is our weekly stop for my co-workers and myself. Close by and so so good, we order platters sometimes so they cut up the shawarmas in pieces and their fries are awesome, especially with the sauces(garlic,tahini,sirachia) . This family owned and run does a great job with service, and quality, my kids go there for lunches as they offer student specials. Must try if you like donairs and shawarmas. read more

Delicious and amazing service. The portion sizes are good too! We had the beef donair, fries, and tabbouleh. The large donair is huge and so much more than what we expected. I've never written a food review before but I go to Damascus so much that I feel obliged. This might be the best meal of any kind under $20 in Calgary. Twice a week for over a year and it hasn't gotten old. Actually, I find myself having to restrain myself from going more often. The shawarma is the best I've ever had. Platters, wraps, plates... I mix it up and its all amazing. My go-to though is the Chicken Platter, which is incredibly flavourful and always satisfying. This shop is run by a really friendly guy and his brother, always grateful for business. I highly recommend trying this place. read more
