    Inside Sultan's Tent
    Jennie L.

Lovely place with beautiful décor inside. Lots of lamps and drapery hanging all over. Great place to have a private conversation with friends because each booth feels like a private area. However it was freezing when we were there, and three hours later it wasn't much warmer. Our feet took awhile to regain their warmth. Service took awhile, but it was extremely busy on the night we were there and it looked like only two servers on the floor. Our server was sweet and friendly. We decided on the feast. Which was 6 courses spread out for the night. We started off with the Harira soup. Warm tomato based soup filled with chickpeas and rice and saffron. Lovely. Then we had the Moroccan Vegetable salad which was a mixture of potatoes, beets, roasted peppers and olives which you eat with your hands with bread. This also was light but tasty to wet our appetite for the other courses. As a disclaimer, you are asked to eat with your hands but cutlery is available if you are uncomfortable. And they wash your hands with warm water twice during the service which is a fun and interesting component of the meal. You can choose from a variety of appetizers. I chose the B'stilla Royale - A delightful preparation of chicken, eggs, onions, ginger, saffron and almonds wrapped in paper-thin layers of pastry and lightly dusted with frosting sugar and cinnamon. One of our friends chose this too and didn't like the sweet sugar with the chicken, but I felt it complimented the flavours and quite enjoyed it. My husband ordered the Briq of Mergez- Spicy lamb sausages wrapped in phyllo pastry served with harissa sauce and lemon. Delicious and lovely harissa sauce to complement it. Our other friend ordered the Spinach Briq which he enjoyed. For mains I chose the Cornish Game Hen tangine with dried plums, almonds and honey.* This was amazing! A huge game hen was nestled in a bed of dried plums and apricots. Moist and delicate it was lovely. My husband chose the lamb couscous, which also was delicious...full of hunks of lamb and stew vegetables. Our friends also were pleased with their meals...the vegetable tangine and the lamb mergez tangine. All came with bread to soak up the lovely stew bites. For dessert two of us chose the Braewat - a pastry dipped in honey stuffed with crushed almonds, and sprinkled with sesame seeds . Pleasant, it was like eating a sesame snap, and a nice twist on the baklava. The other two dishes that were ordered was the chocolate mousse which was pleasant, but the real winner was the vanilla ice cream with mango sauce. The mango sauce is clearly homemade and I could have drank a tub of it. We also had complementary mint tea, which was a little too sweet for all of our liking, but kept us warm. For an interesting night out with friends I would totally recommend this place. Tasty food, interesting atmosphere, and a memorable night out.

Delicious & hot chicken tanjune - meat fell off the bone, lovely sauce. Bread to share was tasteless. Very expensive $27 dish. Beer was reasonable $9. Great atmosphere - each table had curtains for privacy. Interesting tradition of wash hands in warm water at the table - refreshing. Yes there was Middle Eastern music but we could not hear it at our table; speakers were in the washroom. Waitress was very friendly & knowledgeable. Instead of separating the bill for 7 guests at our table, we received one bill with a calculator so it took time for each of us to figure out our individual totals. Urghhh!

This is probably my favourite place to eat for a special occasion in Calgary. The ambiance is luxurious and cozy with all the tapestries and cushions, the Morrocan food is very flavorful and delicious, and eating with your hands is fun! Ive been here many times and never had a bad experience. Always get the Morrocan mint tea at the end of your meal - it's the best mint tea EVER.

Comfortable booths that allow intimate conversations.

Delicious and beautiful! It's been a few years since we've been here and I don't know why it's been so long! The food was succulent and the experience, lovely. We had the Cornish hen tagine and couscous tagine, which was more than enough to fill both my husband's, 3-yr old's, and my stomach. The service was pleasant, friendly and respectful. I really enjoyed the table service hand wash ritual; a necessity when eating with your hands, but done so elegantly. The decor, although unchanged in years, is very pretty and intricate and does not seem dated. I love the tables and private dining feel to the booths. The music was a little eclectic but at an appropriate volume that you could easily carry on a quiet conversation - difficult to find in most restaurants. My only frustration with this restaurant was the location and parking. It certainly is no fault of the restaurant's and they do have a sign on their door telling you where you can park, but in such a busy area it isn't easy to turn around and get back to the parking lot when you easily miss the entrance. You'll spend 10-15 minutes trying to get back there to park. So, a tip: free parking is available on the south side of the building and you are easily able to turn left into the parking lot from 14th ave if you are coming from the north end. If you come from the south (out of downtown) be prepared to take a right into the lot as soon as you cross the bridge into Kensington. I look forward to my next visit and meal here, with the ability to carry on a conversation, and will remember the parking location next time! And I'll also remember to take more photos of the main course - it smelled and looked so fantastic that we dove right in before I got a photo op.

I'm always scared it's going to be overcooked, because at many restaurants the fish usually is, but this was perfectly grilled and well seasoned. The bed of veggies underneath had a really nice, subtle flavor that complemented the fish without overpowering it. I also ordered their banana cocktail, which honestly surprised me. I didn't think I would ever like banana in a cocktail, but it was absolute heaven. Smooth, balanced, and not overly sweet. One of those drinks you think about ordering again halfway through. For food, I also had the braised short ribs, and they were excellent. Super tender, rich, and full of flavor. Definitely one of those comforting dishes that still feels elevated and well executed. The decor deserves its own mention. The space is warm, stylish, and thoughtfully designed, and there's an actual live tree inside the restaurant, which is such a cool touch. You can already tell this place must be incredible in the summer when everything is open and lively. Overall, Porch delivers on food, drinks, and atmosphere. Easily a spot I'd come back to, whether for dinner, drinks, or a special night out.

We saw they were going to open at 11am, and decided to try our luck by getting there right at opening since we didn't have a reservation. We got lucky and got seated right away! - PARKING - Street parking, make sure you take note of how long you paid for! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - The ambiance inside is so nice and airy, with greenery and natural light shining through. There's also a super cute swing area next to the bar area that you can sit. I really liked the overall interior design! The staff was very attentive for our large party throughout our meal. There are bathrooms downstairs as well. - FOOD - Bacon Jam Benedict ($20.00): Loved the flavor combination in this! The sweet savory maple bacon jam worked so well! We upgraded to the fried potatoes ($4.00) and they were pretty tasty. Carrot Cake French Toast ($24.00): We got one to share with the table, and I'm glad we didn't commit because it was just OK to me. I wish there was more mascarpone filling, and also a different sauce than chocolate because it didn't pair well for me. Winter Nights ($19.00): We wanted to get some greens in and chose this salad. I enjoyed the mix of greens and also the fennel salami which gave a salty bite! Truffle Parm Fries ($13.00): We also got this to share with the table and you can't go wrong with these! - OVERALL - Great brunch option if you have a small or large group! Really nice airy ambiance for a nice start to your day.

That works just fine for me, I'm not sure I could've had much more than a puff or two of it otherwise. It was my first sheesha experience. I was also the first one there. Cafe Med was busy and I was too afraid to go in by myself. Thank the good Yelp gods for Sarah Louise! She saved me from looking like a creep peeking in the windows for too long. The folks at Cafe Med are friendly people. Our server talked us into some Moroccan Madness (tea) while we waited for the rest of our peeps to arrive. We also snacked on some red pepper hummus and rolled up grape vine leaves (if you've never had them, they're comparable to cabbage rolls in concept... just a different flavour to them). You might also want to try the garlic pizza. As far as sheesha bars go, I have nothing else to compare this one to! So it's got three stars in my books. Mostly because the guy serving our table offered to fill our tea pots up with more hot water, took the pots away and didn't return with them until we inquired about them again. And also because, even though it's a spot to come smoke things, there were times the haze built up enough to burn my eyes for a moment or two. At any rate, the food was pretty cheap, the pipes were just over $10 each and they kept bringing new coals around. From what I gathered, not dropping ashes into the pipe is a bit of an art that Cafe Med has mastered. Overall, a positive experience!

For food we ended up ordering and sharing the zucchini latkes, piri piri chicken, pork belly, mezze dip plate (we got the red pepper hummus, tomato feta & brown butter labneh), halloumi and the potato fingerlings. The bread for the dip plate was homemade, it was to die for! The dips to go with were amazing. Each of the tapas we had was perfectly balanced with spicy, fresh, sweet and savoury touches. The attention to detail in the food is very evident. Everything was delicious. We couldn't even choose a favourite dish because everything was THAT good!!!! It is not often you go out to eat and every single dish is a hit, but here everything truly was. the owner & chef, Kenny visited our table multiple times, chatted with us, checked in on our food & explained exactly what was in each dish. He was extremely personable and also made our experience tonight extremely special. at the end of our meal, we couldn't decide on which dessert to get, so we got the lemon ice cream dish and the chocolate hazelnut mousse. They were both absolutely delicious. the lemon ice cream was so refreshing and the chocolate hazelnut mouse was rich but not too sweet & the crumble on top was incredible. The staff even surprised us at the end of our meal with a little something to congratulate us on our run today. we have never seen a staff do anything like this before, it was the kindest surprise and we are so grateful. they made our night so special. honestly, none of us can remember the last time we had food and service as wonderful as we did tonight.
