Had a great trip, my two guides were JC and Mike. They did a very good job in taking us up. Unfortunately, it hit 50 mph winds and we were forced to turn around at 9500 ft. No summit this trip, but I still very much enjoyed the experience. I met Chris and Jen, the owners. Both are very nice and helpful. Next attempt at summit, I'll likely go through SMG again

Just got home from a weekend trip with Shasta Mountain Guides yesterday and was telling a friend about my experience. He asked me to rate my trip on a scale from 1-10; I told him it was an 11. The same goes here - if I could give these guys 6 stars I would! The mountain itself is breathtakingly beautiful and Ryan, Mike, and Adam (my guides) struck the perfect balance of being professional and adventurous. On the first day, Ryan stated that his goals for the trip were for us to learn the basics of mountaineering, to have fun, and to summit. We nailed all three! The only problem is that I now have a serious hiking/climbing itch and can't stop thinking about where I'll go next!

Summit, no working pen for the register, so a photo will have to do.

I'm climbed with Shasta Mountain Guides the last week of June and it was an awesome 5 star experience. We hiked to the summit over 4 days via the Avalanche Gulch route. The first 2 days was a leisurely hike up to 50/50 to acclimatize and do a little snow training. The first night was spent at Horse Camp and the second was spent at 50/50. Our guide, Joey, correctly predicted that Helen Lake would get crowed and 50/50 would be a better option, plus he knew the best spots to camp at Horse camp. Joey was perfect at route finding and pace setting. On the day of the summit push we got up at 2 am and were on the trial by 2:45. Joey had us well prepared with what to expect for the day and for each section of the summit push. We made the summit by 10 am and we're back at 50/50 by 3:30. I cannot stress enough the great job that Joey did guiding us to the, with his knowledge of the mountain and the route and where to push hard and when to take breaks made for an epic experience of a lifetime. The staff at SMG were also great prior to the trip answering all questions and providing solid advice and tips to give you the best chance for a successful climb. I will recommend SMG to all my friends!!

This was my first mountain climb and I was very pleased with Mountain Shasta Guides' leadership to the summit! Joey and Skylar were our guides and they were extremely hard-working and knowledgeable, and great company, too. As a newbie climber, I felt safe and prepared the whole trip. I strongly recommend using Shasta Mountain Guides!

Just back from a truly awesome experience climbing Mt. Shasta with my son Jack (16) and our family friend Tommy (18). Our guides were Joey and Dana who said their goal was to make it safe, fun and to help us summit - in that order. And they did all three. They found that delicate balance required of a professional guide, to be a leader yet to also allow us all to have our own positive experience. Thank you Joey and Dana and thank you Shasta Mountain Guides!

Summited with SMG on July 3. Awesome experience with two great guides. Razor and Andrew couldn't have done it better. Owner Chris is super helpful and answered all our silly questions prior to booking. Highly recommend SMG for any guided trip in the Shasta area!!!

It was a fantastic experience reaching the summit, but the climb itself was the hardest and most amazing part.

To be…read moreclear, the campground is a short distance prior to the actual lake which has its own parking lot and trailheads. Once parked at the lake, you can embark on the moderate trail to Heart Lake. Approaching the lake, the trail is to the left of it and climbs along the lake shore with intermittent views. As you take a gradual but steady climb up, you will start to see views open up and eventually see Mt Shasta itself. Most hikers stop at Heart Lake which is a scenic spot with granite on one side and on the outlet side of the lake for Shasta views. If you're wanting a little bit of a longer hike, when facing the lake, make a right and log hop across its outlet and follow a faint but obvious trail to a rocky outcropping. There you will reach an amazing vista of Castle Lake and Mt Shasta. It's a great spot to have your lunch and take some amazing photos. Take care on the way down as there are some steep drop offs and slippery rocks. Most of the trail is exposed, so I'd go earlier in the day in the warm months. Depending on how far you go, it's 3-4 miles out and back. Wonderful way to have amazing mountain scenery in a short hike. Free parking at the lake and pit toilets (not the best, not the worst I've seen.)

Trail was a steady incline for the most part and becomes very steep near the end. Furthermore, trail transitions from a wooded area to a rocky and exposed terrain. I'm from North Carolina, which boasts the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi (Mount Mitchell, 6684 feet). Allegedly, the volcano was last active in 1250 AD. No Yelp then to prove it one way or the other. There is a fabulous vista point not far away on I-5. I'd love to catch it at sunrise but alas, I'm heading south this afternoon and can't stay to get closer to Mount Shasta. Instead, I'll just have to be satisfied with the great views of the mountain from the highway. [Review 20958 overall - 488 in California - 1943 of 2023.]

Most of the surrounding area is very flat and then all of a sudden your attention is fully grabbed by is presence. An unplanned stop and slight detour isn't a hard decision to make. I pull over and stop. Open the trunk and pull out a little bottle of apple cider I packed for the trip to Seattle. I sip the near burning hot cider and it reminds me of the holidays - the only time I would have such a beverage. Apparently my Black Opel paint made the back trunk into an oven of sorts. I gaze at what appears to be a snow capped mountain volcano. It takes a moment to realize the altitude difference of the top of the mountain and where I'm standing - apparently 14,162 feet. I take a small hike or nature walk. I pick up some rocks that had a huge volume and very little weight. Apparently lava that dried up when it was near the surface and under no pressure. I think most of the time in life some of the most enjoyable moments and events are unplanned. Maybe schedules and windows of time and reservations are overrated.
