Shashlichnaya is the sister restaurant of Cheburechnaya (also in Rego Park). I've been going to Cheburechnaya for years and have really enjoyed their food. It is much more casual than Shashlichnaya, and I found the food for both places to be about equal. Love both places! For a special occasion, Shashlichnaya is the place to go. Great atmosphere, great service, great food. On this visit, a group of 8 of us came to Shashlichnaya to celebrate a good friend's milestone birthday. We were all looking forward to the delicious food but what sealed the deal was the belly dancing! There is belly dancing on most nights, start around 8:45pm but not on all nights, so call ahead to inquire. The belly dancer tonight was wonderful; so friendly, so beautiful, so talented. (see my photos and video clips). What a fun evening! Our shared menu: Kebabs: lulya, lamb rib, veal liver & boneless chicken Shashlichnaya Salad Manty with meat Pelmeni with Lagman Soup Chebureki with potatoes Steamed Rice with veg. French Fries with mushrooms I really enjoyed all the food but there were two standout dishes: Manty with meat and Pelmeni with Lagman Soup. These were outstanding, and I would return just for these two items. The kebabs were really good; some better than others, but overall, very good. Surprisingly, the veal liver was a hit! Service and hospitality were fantastic! So friendly and accommodating. We were even able to bring our own birthday cake and liquor, with no additional service charge. I must add that the dining room was really beautiful (my photo really doesn't do it justice). I'm already planning on a return visit in a couple of weeks. Can't wait to go back! Personal recommendations: ~ Pelmeni in Lagman Soup and lagman. Plov (if in group) I was here with one of my usual groups. This is the sister restaurant to Cheburechnaya. As with them, this is a kosher Uzbek/Bukharan spot specializing in shashlyk/kabobs among other things. We had a mix of dishes. In terms of alcohol and other drinks, they have wines by the bottle as well as various beer and some soft drinks. The first dish to arrive was the Shashlichnaya Salad which was a mix of tomatoes, cucumbers, and other things topped with cold beef. It was pretty tasty. The chebureki; a type of massive fried dumpling; arrived soon filled with mushrooms. These were also good and not as oily as some other spots with a good amount of filling. The manty arrived afterwards and they were excellent. Nice amount of filling and very juicy. I would recommend them. The pelmeni in lagman soup was also very tasty. Good amount of tender meat and very tasty dumplings. If I was to go back alone, I probably would have this and a couple kebabs and be very happy. They gave us some bread afterwards for free which reminded me of a bit too much of matzah. The plov or palov or rice pilaf as they say in terms of an English translation on the menu arrived soon. This was good with a mix of tender meat and a good amount of rice. I would have preferred a more heavily spiced rice or rice with some more flavoring but I have the same opinion at their other spot so I think it's just because I'm used to the more flavored rice from other central Asian countries. The unique thing here is the roasted garlic which can be added to the palov for extra flavor. They also have the green palov on the menu like the other spot but we didn't try it. The kebabs arrived soon afterwards consisting this case with lulya and regular lamb. The lulya was very tender and quite good though less fatty than usual and I liked it a lot. The regular lamb was good as well. I wasn't surprised that the kebobs were good as I remember them being quite tasting at the other spot. The food overall was good. I have had better similar food (mostly in Brooklyn) but some dishes were better than the norm and overall we had a good experience. The odd walls and ceiling help add to the odd fun charm of this place as well. read more

My friend brought me here for some Uzbekstan food. We each ordered a lunch special. Oh my! They give you lots of food. It comes with a medium size fresh salad filled with cucumbers, tomatoes and red onions. The bread is huge! They give it to each person. We both ordered a bowl of lagman. It's filling and delicious. Then we got two long lulyas. If we had known how big the portions were, then we wouldn't have ordered samsa and manty (dumplings). It's also really pretty inside. Love the decor. It's filled with and stained glass windows. The service is great. They do not rush you to finish your food. It's right off the subway station. read more

The food here is pretty good. It's the sister restaurant to the one we always go to, Cheburechnaya. I was here with my Hubby and Mother-in-law about a month ago and forgot to review the place. We came here for lunch, and at the time, only one waiter was working to serve a few tables. One of them was a big group of kids. The running around inside the restaurant was a little too much for us. We tried borsch, the soup. Not bad, but the other place makes it better. We had the special salad, and this was very good! Then we ordered the steamed rice with vegetables, Bronzino, and some kebabs that include quail, lamb, and chicken and veal liver? I must say the Bronzino was one of the best! This one I would order again. The lamb and chicken kebabs were excellent. I liked these better than the quail. I didn't care for the liver, but Hubby liked it a lot. The spices used to marinate the kebabs were perfect! The service can be better. When there's a group of patrons, a restaurant would need more than a server to attend to the tables. The setting was lovely, with ample space, nice decor, and more alive! We'll come back again to try other dishes soon. read more

We've been here a couple times. Delicious Uzbek food with great prices. Saturday evenings have a dj/belly dancer so it gets pretty loud. Definitely get the plov, manti, and plenty of kebabs. We actually tried the beef testicales too since we were feeling adventurous... our favorite is the super thing shoe string fries. They're amazing! read more

I had made two birthday here before and have been here prior to COVID over 7-8 times . Today was the last time I am coming here !! My waiter reeked of sweat and was clueless on what he was doing there , what his job was or how to speak! My shish kebobs which is what I used to always come here for were all a complete and steamed pile of disappointment. The lulya had zero sear on it as if they put it on a flat top, covered with a lid and put water around it . Same with the chicken and beef but the beef was cold inside and partly raw !! The mashed potatoes were not mashed at all. Manti had way to much fat more then meat and so much gristle . Never coming here again. The plov was still good and cheburek as well. I brought my friend here because I wanted him to try some Uzbek food. I had been to a couple other Central Asian restaurants in this area, such as the excellent Cheburechnaya, and this place was as good as any of them. First, this place had a very relaxing and peaceful ambience. It is large, super clean, and felt like a place for a family dinner. We ordered several different items of food and everything was filling and delicious. It appears that their signature item here are the chebureki (deep fried pastries that are similar to empanadas). They are super cheap at only $1.65 each, but very big and come in a wide variety of fillings. We had four different chebureki fillings: meat, chicken, potatoes, and mushrooms. All of them were soft, flaky, crispy and tasty. The other dish we enjoyed a lot was their plov (pilaf). This consisted of boiled chunks of beef with onions, carrots, hard boiled eggs, and more on top of plate of seasoned rice. The meat was super moist and was falling off the bone. The portion size was gigantic too and for a dish that was only roughly $10, it was enough to feed two people. I highly recommend both the chebureki and pilaf here. We have been here many times and I never remembered to review it. The food is good - their plov when fresh is amazing! Some shashlik I like more than others but I think it depends on your preference (like they use some nontraditional seasonings/herb in their lamb marinade which I personally don't like). This place doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inner decor is pretty interesting. The ambiance is not bad. They serve Uzbekistan food, I think? The staff is very helpful and friendly. Here are some of the things we ordered: - Avocado salad: (small), chopped mix veggies and avocado tossed in lemon juice, salt, pepper, olive oil, parsley, and I'm not sure what else comprises the dressings but it creates this refreshing, crunchy salad - Pilaff: rice cooked with beef chunks and spices, served with whole roasted garlic. Take my advice, peel the garlic and toss them with the rice, it will definitely elevate the flavor. The beef pieces were so tender, succulent, juicy, and delicious. The rice itself was fluffy and the dish was so fragrant from all the spices. It's really good! I imagine having it with a side of cold yogurt-based dip like raita will definitely make it better since it's quite a heavy dish. But I enjoyed it still - Kebab: lamb, boneless chicken, veal sweetbread. The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked. The boneless chicken was well-seasoned, tender, and juicy. The sweetbread is something I ordered particularly out of interest. It's a thymus gland of a veal. It has some sort of a metallic taste and almost a squidgy texture (like vegan meat). It tastes similar to lamb testicle (which they also serve, and yes people I do try crazies all the time, they're what make life interesting). Perhaps not for the faint-hearted, but definitely something to try for the adventurous eater. Definitely does not taste bad The portion was huge too so I highly suggest you come in with at least 3 people. The more people the more dishes you can try anyway. I can't believe this little (figurative) gem has been under our noses the entire time! The staff is knowledgeable & helpful. The portions are ginormous n super affordable. In all honesty, it was the buy 5 get 1 free empanada sign that made me pry open the gates of Rome- if you'd ever been here, you'd know what I mean. The pilaf rice platter w lamb is so delish. Parboiled rice that is not soppy with a good chew, julienned sautéed carrots w herbs. Mixed that w a whole roasted head of garlic & fatty lamb meat. Yes! Why have I not had Bukharian before this. Small hole in the wall looking restaurant that I hadn't noticed until I started doing research on Uzbekistan restaurants in the area. Came here on a Thursday afternoon and it was pretty quiet. The fish was pretty fresh overall and well-seasoned. Portions were good and I left satisfied. My only main complaint is that the fries could've been crispier, but I did finish them so it couldn't have been all that bad. Walked in here and there's this lanky guy standing in the middle of the hallway. No idea if he worked there or if he was just some random guy. He proceeded to "ni-hao" me. Yes he did... Me and my buddy came in wanted to try this Uzbek food here at this fairly new joint. We were greeted right away sat at the very spacious table for 6. We ordered quite a bit enough for at least 4 people. The hachipuri aka stuffed empanada with beef was made fresh and it was popping...the salads were good as well...the soup lagman was good as well, meat was tender. The lamb shashlik on the bone was quite nice as well a bit chewy. The plov the main event was very tasty, although the meat(lamb) was a bit tough. Overall the food was 4 stars. The service needs improvement, our waiter has spend more time in the kitchen then actually taking care of us, so the dude definately needs some OJT on serving his custies. Have ordered food in delivery, but never been to restaurant yet. Was craving borscht. Yes that can happen. Not only did I enjoy the borscht and Shurpa soups, but was delighted with the Pelmeni dumplings in lagman sauce. Samsa with pumpkin were well seasoned, warm and had pleasing crisp-chewy crust dotted with black sesame seeds. It has been a regular at this point from fresh salads to salmon kabobs or quail. OMG! This place is everything! The food was amazing, I almost cried. Plov, shashlik and everything else tasted as I was in Uzbekistan. Portions were big and worth the price. Visited on 3 Sept 2022, food wasn't great, definitely not a Central Asian quality. But the lamb shishkebab tasted too spicy at first, but burning sensation did not disappear. Instead, increased during several hours after visiting the restaurant. Now feels like a chemical burn (E264 or worse?) inside of my mouth. How is there good ratings? I'm shocked, my family was planning on celebrating my mothers birthday there so we decided to try out the place first before inviting 20 people. Wow, the worst worse food, cheburechyna is MUCH better, the salad was bad( salad is so easy to make , my 8 year old sister can make a better salad) , the meat was bad, I don't know a place that only serves 4 pieces of meat on the stick instead of 5 and places a gigantic piece of fat in the middle, it was just horrible.... we left hungry there's a reason why cheburechenya is way way better. Wen we walked into this place, it was beautiful. The decor was very nice and very backyard middle eastern garden like. All of it was very pleasing and comfortable. They had beautiful stained glass lamps which were pretty but not functional. Grapes hanging from the ceiling all over. You can imagine yourself in the Greek isles enjoying the clear blue skies above. Yes the ceiling was clear blue skies! We were greeted buy a couple of friendly waitresses who allowed us to sit anywhere. We Ordered lagman, and an assortment of shashlik to try. Also ordered fresh salad and plov. The one thing that was outstanding was the fresh salad. It had asparagus, yellow and red peppers, cucumber, tomato and herbs. Believe it or not it also had half an avocado! It was absolutely gorgeous! This really built anticipation for the Main stuff to come. If the simple salad was this good, we couldn't wait for the rest. Unfortunately... Everything elae was pretty average. Plov was lacking a bit of taste. Shashliki was on the salty side. Lagman was good but noodles were overcooked and overall lacking a bit of umph. Overall, it was a great experience. I would definitely come back to the ambience and also the friendly service.
