The gas here seems ridiculously expensive, so I try to not go here. However, I had an emergency problem with my car, so pulled in because it was the closest place (safest to drive to). They checked out the situation and didn't have the part I needed, but since I needed to drive a few hours that evening and couldn't wait for them to order what I needed, they called around until they found a shop that could help me out and made me an appointment. Within an hour and a half, my car was good to go. I'm really grateful for their kind and generous help even though I didn't end up being a paying customer. read more

4 stars because the pumps are brand new, they have those screens where you can watch quick clips of the current news/shows, and if you pay cash...you get a 10 cent discount. If you have Smiths rewards and have enough points for another 10 cent or more depending on your points...definitely lots of room for cheaper gas rate. Shell has always been our favorite gas to use as our vehicles seem to perform better. It doesn't leave that heavy feeling when we gas. read more

Sand Hill Shell, as I call it, is clean, safe and easily accessible. It's got a small snack mart and 3 car bays in its service station (that I have not patronized). The bathroom is usually "medium clean." The gas is, as others note, more expensive here than elsewhere. But it's hard to hold a grudge, since this station is sitting on some of the most expensive real estate in the country. read more

Construction has made this already small gas station harder to access. I finally found a spot to get gas after waiting a long time. I had come around the back way because the regular entrance was blocked. I was approached after I had gotten out of the car, swiped my card and inserted the pump and told that I needed to move because that space was exclusive to full service. Gas prices here are already ridiculous and I only stop here when in a pinch but this was the last straw. I wasn't offered or told what that entailed either so there is that as well. I wish I liked this place and that benefits and convenience justified the outrageous prices but NOPE. read more

Should have written this review months ago..... I had a rental vehicle whose TPMS light lit up. Pulled into this Shell station looking for air to fill my tires.... There was a free-to-use tire-air pump by the garage shop. I had trouble filling up the air for the tires as the air pressure gauge kept showing 50psi or more.... One of the mechanics / owner of the garage shop (I think his name was John?) saw me having issues and he offered to help. He adjusted all 4 tires pressures for me and the TPMS light was turned off as a result. Very nice gentleman! Thank you so much for the help!!! read more

Do NOT take your car here for any repairs. Especially do NOT trust a technician named Michael. We brought our car here for a simple oil change and tire pressure adjustment. Picked the car up the next day and paid in full. Two days later, we were driving on the highway in the left lane when suddenly the bottom of the front of the car fell out and started making a rattling sound. We managed to get off onto the left shoulder, and then ended up having to have CHP stop traffic so we could get over to an exit safely. When the tow truck came, the guys opened up the hood of the car and found a RAG inside as well as loose screws. It turned out to have been a very negligent job that could have gotten us into a serious accident (with a small child in the car)!! But even worse, they have taken no responsibility for this negligence. When my husband came in the next day, Michael lied about being the one who left the rag and loose screws in there in the first place. He then promised to talk to the manager but never did. We followed up again a few days later and nobody there took our concerns seriously. They told me they would talk to the manager but never did. And Michael mocked the whole situation saying I was overreacting despite being the one who caused the whole issue in the first place. So they basically nearly got us into a serious accident on a highway because of negligence (leaving a rag inside right near the engine!) and could care less. Absolutely awful business with people who do not care about their customers. Spread the word and do NOT give these guys anymore business please. read more

This gas station is in a convenient location but the prices are very high! Today, I tried to go by here for gas after having my nails done and the only available pumps were full service and the least expensive gas was $3.39! I thought this seemed high so skipped it and headed back to Woodside. Even the pricey Woodside gas station was $.40 less at $2.99 for the 87! So, next time I'll remember to probably skip Menlo Park and Woodside for gas and go to less expensive Redwood City, Mountain View, etc. locations! read more

I have been going to Sharon Heights Shell for over twenty years and find it to be an outstanding operation. It is a real full-service gas station with three repair bays and four full-time mechanics. They are customer-focused and do incredibly good work. I have had all of my cars worked on there and always been very satisfied. I realize some folks have an issue with the gas prices and they are high. However, I go there because I have a relationship with them and appreciate the value they provide. I am sorry to say that I cannot recommend Sharon Heights Shell for any reason. First, the gas is seriously overpriced--sometimes as much as 50 cents more than other comparable places in the area. That being said, when I'm desperate, I sometimes pull in and get a couple of gallons, which always annoys me. Next, their customer service is awful. I have had two very bad experiences here. The first time I went there, I had a blown tire (I had run over a nail). It took forever to get an attendant's attention, and once I did, they offered to sell me four overpriced tires. When I asked them if they could merely plug the leak, they reluctantly said okay, but would not stand behind their work (I ended up going to Menlo Atherton Auto Repair, who guaranteed their work, and did a completely great job--the tire ended up being salvageable and lasted me another 15K miles). The next time I went, I had a slow leak in my tire and needed simply to pump it up with air. When I tried to pull the air tube out of the machine, it was stuck. I asked a nearby attendant if it was broken. He didn't even look me in the eye. Just said, "I dunno," and gave me a shrug as he turned away. Seriously? Not cool. read more

BEWARE - SHOP MANAGER TRIES TO SCAM YOU!!! Went here to change two front tires on a car that runs perfectly. Went inside the gas station to pay for the tires and came back outside to find the hood of the car open and the shop manager with a tool in his hand... why do you need to open the hood to replace tires??? He states that the car is back firing, and that it needs to be repaired immediately. We don't believe him, so he tries to start the car and the engine makes loud popping noises. We ask how this can be possible if it was working perfect when we parked it, and he says (defensively) that it is a big problem that needs to be fixed. We inquire more about the "coincidence" and a few seconds later (literally) he points at one of the spark plugs and says - look I found the problem! The spark plug was unscrewed and was hanging. He continued to try to convince us that it could be a major repair and they need to diagnose it. We continued to challenge him and he got frustrated and walked away to the corner of the shop to work on another car. The other mechanic that works with him came to the car and we asked him to screw the spark plug back in. The car ran perfectly again. The manager stayed hidden in the corer of the shop like a coward while the other mechanic changed the tires for us. read more

I've been to this gas station TWICE. Once back in 1998 when I bought a car from a guy who lived around the block from this gas station, and the gas tank was near empty. I payed an arm and two legs for this car (which I stil own, btw), and now I have to pay another arm for the gas prices. Remember, this was in 1998 where gas prices are no where near what they are now, but at that time, this station was charging a whole lot more than other stations. Fast forward to 2007. Gas here is is like .30cents more than what I could buy down in the South Bay. If you're mega rich, then you can afford the Full Service, where $4.05/gal can get you Prem 91 Octane Full Service. A Civic pulled up when I was there, she must have been super low on gas, since her fillup didn't take more than a minute. She must have been desperate for gas, but not desperate enough to do a full tank. So in my most recent trip, I dropped by to use the FREE windshield squeeze on my filty windows. The only repair station where every time there is a problem with the car, they are at the house within minutes (once, I hadn't had time to hang up the phone and had to answer the door in bunny slippers!) They've even just dropped off the car at the house when they were done and the job was already paid for. They've done a lot of extra work free, when it's going to be pricey, they call first, and they are reasonable in doing just a little investigation to figure out a problem if it's not a good time to be spending money on the car. I've never been told work would be done then showed up and had to wait or had to leave and come back the following day. They're very proactive about calling with an update that is reliable. Compared to other garages used, to-date, they don't deliver jobs where miscellaneous liquids begin to ooze out of the car, mysterious squeaks only start AFTER the car is serviced, but the garage can't figure out the problem, and if they can figure out a cheaper way to solve a problem, they'll recommend it. Haven't noticed much "service with a smile" but then again, it hasn't necessarily proved more expensive than other services used that had comparable quality results, and I value pragmatic reliable delivery higher than salesmanship. read more

Warning! Avoid this place!! The service and repair people are scammers. They told my mom that if she wanted them to use a device to check her tires, it would cost $89. Come to find out that the tires in her car don't even have sensors that would have worked with their device (we found this out from a dealer afterward). Luckily we didn't fall for it! Another time, I asked if they had a tire pressure gauge and they said I would need to pay to use it. Charging me to use a device that costs $5 or less?! Lastly, the gas is OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive here- often $.50 or more expensive than other stations in the area. Again, I would avoid this place at all costs. read more

These guys are in my neighborhood, so I decided to give them a try... their gas prices are higher than every other station, but I had heard their service was fine. My wheelbarrow had a flat and I needed it first thing in the morning--remodeling my house, don't ask. I dropped it off lost night, and got to talk to the manager Bob when I stopped by to pick it up this morning... he explained how they spent a whole hour on it and had to patch three holes only to find more. Long story short, he had not fixed the little tire and wanted $20 for his effort (the whole thing is worth $15). I came home and checked it out, there were no patches! So I stopped by HD, got a $10 tube and popped it in. Problem solved. As far as I am concerned, that was $20 well spent to find out what bozos these guys are. If they lie about my wheelbarrow tire, chances are they will lie about your $$$ car. I feel bad giving this place one star - the guys at the gas station are great - but I had such a negative experience with this place as a repair shop that I feel like it merits a warning. My car died when I was in downtown Palo Alto - almost certainly the alternator. I had it towed here because this repair shop was close to the Marguerite line and work, and I'd gotten a tire replaced here in the past. It was after hours, so I dropped off my keys with a gas station guy and waited to hear from a mechanic in the morning. When the mechanic called me the next day, he told me that he could replace the alternator and the battery, but he wouldn't guarantee that those were the problems unless I'd pay $100+ for a diagnostic test. WHAT?! I've replaced an alternator (with grown-up supervision) before and was pretty confident that it was the root cause, but I hated feeling bullied into spending a chunk of change for a basic diagnostic. I can understand why they'd charge if I wasn't having the work done there, but this is kind of ridiculous. So, the work commences. The mechanic calls me back, tells me I need new tires RIGHT THIS INSTANT, and that this will be another $500-$600 (for my no-frills Jetta). I say no thanks (I know I can get a better price), and he says something to the effect of "Your funeral." The work, without the new tires, ends up being $700-800 overall for a battery, alternator, and an unnecessary diagnostic. My mom, feeling sympathetic, offers to pick up the tab for the fix. I use my bike+Caltrain to get there from San Francisco, carrying a check from her in my pannier (and not a lot else). The mechanic says they don't accept checks, because who accepts checks anymore - everyone has debit cards, so clearly, if you are trying to pay with a check, you are going to commit fraud. (A paraphrase, but that's pretty much what he said!!) My bad, but I don't have my full wallet with me and have no way to pay with a card. So, I have to call up my mom while she's at a family party several hours away, get her credit card information, give the mechanic all my identifying information (and hers) save retinal scans, and he begrudgingly gives me my car. I'm sorry for my part in the bumpiness of the transaction, but I think it was a bit unnecessary to treat a return customer (or anyone, really) as a con-artist. Get my car, get my bike, get the heck back to SF. Realize that the mechanic forgot to reset the airbag light, which commonly goes on when the battery is totally drained. Really, really don't want to deal with him again to get it fixed, even though it is completely unprofessional to leave something like that hanging. Summary: okay price on alternator replacement, terribly overpriced diagnostic charges, sloppy work on my car, free bullying from the lead mechanic. Next time, convenience be damned, I'm taking my car to a decent shop. read more

I live right next to this Shell, but I refuse to go there unless I am desperate - and then I'll only get enough gas to go somewhere else. Why? These guys are incorrigible price gougers. The gas is at least 20 cents more than you'll find on El Camino, and their services are also very expensive. They charge $50 for an oil change, which you can get for $35 at Jiffy Lube. I don't know what that last reviewer was talking about - I haven't seen any TVs at the pump. Besides, how many perks can you install at a gas station that justifies those inflated prices? read more

Not the cheapest gas, but always clean and working pumps (including the paper towels and window cleaners). Rare to find that and good soapy water to clean windows with. Most south bay stations have moldy water. read more

When you think of customer service you think of someone who is kind, helpful, and goes above and beyond to help you. This unfortunately was not my experience at this location. I came out to my car after work with a completely flat tire down to the rim. I drove over to the shell station in hopes to get some help changing the tire to the spare. I spoke with the manager and he said he would help me but he would charge me. To me, that was not acceptable. So I went to just fill up the tire with air. He came up to me and asked how far I was going when I replied he just said, "oh. Good luck." I filled the tire and left. I went to America's tires in redwood city and they fixed it for free and said they would not charge me if we had to change the tire to the spare. read more

Long story short, Bob the manager refused to acknowledge that the problem was not fixed despite me driving with him and showing him. I took it to another shop. The gas here today was a numbing $4.09 for 87 octane and when we accidentally pulled up to the full service pump we were rudely greeted with "this is only for full service" -- lots of the other pumps had tags on them that we assumed meant they were out of order. I recently went here for simple car service...an oil change. Not only was it pricey ($35), but it was awfully done. My engine was smoking up within minutes of leaving the station. I took it back, asked them to fix the smoke problem. They disclaimed everything and said that my engine must have been leaking oil previously, and that it was normal for there to be a lot of smoke for the first week after an oil change. I took the car to another station and they immediately spotted the faulty-installed oil filter and fixed the problems, but Shell wouldn't even refund my money. I should have known that it would be bad news since their gas is always 20-30 cents more than anyone else--but NEVER go there for any auto work. read more
