This is my first yelp review... and the restaurant was a relief after a long series of bad, expensive indian restaurants at Purdue - so I had to get up and write the review.. The price range is similar to what you'd expect from most other Indian buffet but that they have a good service, a good assortment of buffet items and something more than just gulab-jamun for dessert. The Nan(bread) is served fresh at table and isnt soggy unlike most other places... they usually have nice starters and chat items too -something that I miss most in other places. Probably including south indian items once a while would be useful? Chef Sharma always makes you feel welcome, and food is always very tasty. This is one of the best Indian restaurants in Indiana easily. The buffet is on the pricey side, but well-worth-it, because the quality is always very good. Ok people....there must be some dumb competition between Indian restaurants going on for all these negative reviews to even exist. This place is AWESOME. I'm suspicious of these negative comments below. I'm not the reviewing type, but they deserve my effort! This chef used to be the chef at that khana place for like 10yrs (so I've heard) and he is amazing. The food is fresh and wonderful. I eat TONS of Indian food and I love this place. Khana went downhill when he left or at a similar time I'm guessing (last time I went in khana the spinach tasted of cleaning products as did the chutneys - yikes) My favorite indiana joint in the world was this place in NYC called Chola (coincidentally Martha Stewart's favorite too, go figure) but honestly I don't even go when I'm there much anymore as I feel Sharmas now fills all my indian food desires. So yes...what I'm saying is this little place in a strip mall in Indiana kicks the butt of any and all other places I've ever been. I find the buffet to be the way to go and I eat myself to rotund practically everytime I go because I just can't help myself....it's that good. I find it fairly priced. It's locally owned, which is awesome, and it's one of the only p,aces you can get fresh cooked foods that didn't come out of a bag. Frankly when I'm here in this town full of restaurants, this is really the ONLY ACTUAL RESTAURANT I feel comfortable and compelled to return to over and over again. It's ridiculously good. The naan is freshly cooked for you your way....not soggy on buffet The buffet comes with paneer or chicken kabobs which R so tender and tasty The buffet is a good variety of vegetarian and meat dishes The palak is awesome The masala is great The Gobi is fantastic The chutneys rule. I can't control myself in this place. It's always wonderful and as I write I only want to go back. I think I will actually and then maybe add some pics. Now, on to this ridiculous rumor that the staff is no good or that the owner Is Rude? Come on! I'm from NYC, which should read....I get into fights with everyone and piss off almost any waiter I encounter. I don't intend to, it just happens as we tend to be rather blunt and in a hurry. Lol. I have NEVER had a problem with the staff. Sure the kids may be slow at times to bus, or maybe even over eager...but big deal! It's a buffet. The older guys who work there are super reliable though and never overstep. They learned our order and jump to help whenever possible. And the woman up front is so super nice. Maybe people are misunderstanding some cultural communication differences...but I don't see it! She is such a charming woman and a joy to chat with every time I go. Her husband is the cook and I respect how incredibly hard they both work EVERYDAY to provide this community service of an amazing dependable restaurant. OK...I admit I was a little nervous about going when I got to the parking lot and it was empty at 5:30 on a Tue. Once we tried it, yes I went in, it was outstanding. Mutton.... This has become our favorite restaurant in town! I'm actually a somewhat picky eater and was unsure when I first saw the dishes, but now I'm an addict. The other major positive is it's very vegetarian and even vegan friendly. That's not to say all of their dishes are vegetarian, in average about half of the buffet is, the other half is meat based dishes. If you are on Yelp it means you are trying to decide if this restaurant is any good, and I'll ease your unsure worries and tell you GO! If you love I Indian food, you'll love it. On our way to a show in Chicago we stopped here for dinner. The Buffett was first rate, food was hot, wonderfully spiced, a great selection of meat and vegetarian options. Owners were cordial, accommodating, and extremely pleasant. We plan to stop back on our way back south. Definitely worth the trip! read more

Great service every time. The food is authentic North Indian food and is prepared by owner chef Mr. Sharma. His ever smiling wife is there to great you. I've have been to Sharma's Kitchen four times now and I can say that it is the best Indian food I have ever had in Indiana. They have a daily lunch and dinner buffet and they bring out your choice of fresh naan and either kabob or paneer. They have standard buffet food such as Aloo Gobi, Vegetable Samosa, and different curries. I am a vegetarian and they have a plethora of choices for those that don't consume meat. Also, I have noticed they have had different dishes on the buffet every time that I have been there. If you are a fan of Indian Food you must give Sharma's Kitchen a try. I noticed someone else said they have "limited buffet options when compared to, say, Khana Kazana." I felt like they had just as many dishes as Khana Kazana. They have a small salad bar with sauces and chutneys, probably 6-8 main dishes, rice, and an appetizer. Also, they feature several desserts. I honestly feel like their a so many choices I can't try everything. read more

Rude owner who does not refrain herself from asking customers to leave for no reason. Crappy service.

I had to amend my review. On our most recent visit, our server (who I had not seen before, so may have been new) was quite rude, almost like she was angry with us. The price for the buffet has gone up. I also noticed a family with small children using the buffet - the children were literally putting their faces to the trays to smell them. It was disgusting, and for how hypervigilant the manager / owner is to any perceived misbehavior of the clientele, I would have expected someone to catch this. It is not hygienic. read more

Food is good but service is not. I was there with some of my friends.In the middle of the dinner, the owner asked for my friend's baby high chair for another customer. We were shocked. My friend was nice so she gave the chair. But come on who does that, who came there first. How can you ask your customer in the middle of dinner to give away their child's high chair???? read more

This is the third time we have been in this place and we had enough with customer service and in all the three occasions we have had terrible customer service from the owner's wife . She is very rude to non Indian customers. She completely ignores the woman if you go as a couple . She doesn't acknowledged the communication from the woman . Driving home from vacation, we really, really didn't want fast food. I found Sharmas Kitchen on Yelp, and it was just 5 minutes or so off of Hwy 65. I was a little leary of the other reviews citing poor service, especially since we have a toddler in tow. I am so glad we tried it! Great food, amazing service (and kind, and quick!) We ate at Sharma's Kitchen for the first time a few months ago. It was an absolutely delicious meal! The wait-staff was excellent as well as the owners were very gracious. This is a rare gem for a city with many restaurant choices. We eat out nearly every meal, it takes a lot to impress us, it's a clean, quiet, and comfortable place to have an extremely nice meal (buffet) and have good conversation with your loved one(s). Love the food, owner, and waiters. The restaurant is like home where you can food as you wish to have. Generous portions, high quality ingredients, beautiful atmosphere. This review was long due. Few months after moving here from Chicago, I was craving for some good spicy Indian food. I found few on the Internet and we went to this place with big hopes as it had the best rating amongst all the other Indian restaurants in the area. Once we were seated, I realized something was missing; the warmth and the music. All I could hear was the sounds of people chatting and the clatter of silverware. It seemed as if I were in an office canteen. The buffet was not exceptional. Very few items were worth the value. Not to mention, the buffet was much more expensive than Indian restaurants elsewhere in the country. Facing me on the adjacent table, a person was choking on his food and he coughed it out. The ambience became from boring to disgusting in a second. The lack of music made every sound quite audible and hard to ignore. This was the only Indian restaurant in Lafayette and also the closest to our place. Rejecting it the first time itself didn't feel fair. So, we gave it a second chance. We took our friends who were visiting us during thanksgiving last year. They wanted to try something Indian after a weekend of having thanksgiving food and leftovers. We were a group of six adults and two little boys, aged 1 and 3. The lady on the front desk didn't even smile and it seemed like she was having a bad day. Her annoyance on seeing us was clearly reflected on her face. We wanted to order from the menu and she said rudely, "It's not allowed. We are only offering buffet tonight". We had no other choice but to go for the buffet. We saw the tandoori sizzlers that come along with the buffet, being taken to other tables. But we kept waiting for ours. On asking later what's in those sizzlers and why we didn't get it with our buffet, the staff replied, "It's nothing, it's already there in the buffet over there. I just heated it up for that table." We wondered why we don't deserve the food at the right temperature while the other tables do. Then the staff brought the rude lady to our table, and she asked in her annoyed tone, "What's the matter? They had ordered for extra. That's why we gave them. You already have it in the buffet." I couldn't help but remember the last time when I had visited the restaurant. We got the complimentary sizzlers without asking for an extra order. And so did every table that was choosing the buffet. Then, why were we being discriminated this time? The little kids ate whatever little they could but they had spilled some food on the ground while eating. We saw the rude lady pointing to our table repeatedly and talking to the staff with an angry face. We had to pay a huge gratuity in the end and we left the place feeling disappointed by not only the food but also by the behavior of the staff. I have dined in several times and had take out from Sharma's Kitchen and I have been pleased with the service and the food every time. The food is delicious and is undoubtedly the best Indian cuisine I have had. The Tandoori chicken is cooked in a traditional clay oven and the flavor is beyond words. Also, the chicken is always cooked very well and is never dry. This speaks for quality of preparation. The gulab jamun (dessert) is absolutely amazing. I can't wait to go back!! read more

I go there frequently with my family. This is definitely the best Indian restaurant in town and one of the top restaurants if you combine all cuisine types. They have great buffet with many traditional Indian options and a sizzler as appetizer, which is awesome. They have no customer service at all!!! I came here with my husband yesterday, we arrived there at around 9.They told us they don't serve the foods on the menu anymore but they still serve buffet. So we sat down at around 9:05 and they didn't tell us that they will close at exactly 9:30. While we were eating, my husband ask the guy if they close exactly 9:30 or they will let the customers stay there until they naturally leave, like extra 15 mins. This is his answer" No, we close at 9:30, exactly 9:30." Come on now, what kind of customer service is this, we pay $15 per person and only be able to eat for 20 mins. I mean, it's fine if you close at 9:30, but can you please tell me I will only have 20 mins to eat my buffet at the beginning,so that I would leave immediately? I've never been to a business like this, normal business will let the customers have a decent time to eat, at least 45 mins for a buffet. Well, 30 dollars for 20 mins buffet. I've eaten here three or four times hoping to see an improvement and it never happened. The menu prices will have you believe that you are in for a real experience, but the food is at best mediocre if you are very familiar with Indian cuisine. For being in the the armpit of Indiana and having little or no competition Sharma's Kitchen will do just fine. However, they would never make it to see the end of their first day of business in a place like Chicago, or New York! It would really help if the service was better too. Trust me when I say that the woman at the front counter is so rude that I would rather sprinkle rancid curry powder on my own arm and bite it off before ever going back. I hope the owner reads these reviews because I certainly wouldn't give her a job washing dishes, or cleaning the floor in my bathroom, let alone greeting customers.
