Terrible experience. I will never go back to this place. They asked me 2 hours before my appointment to send a picture of my hair to make sure there is time. Shouldn't you be doing that in advance instead of 2 hours before the appointment? After sending the picture they did not ask to extend appointment, so I assumed everything was ok. The owner/stylist Richelle is running 20 mins late and not the friendliest person I've ever met. Now I'm asked to stay later than I anticipated or rescheduled appointment. All I got was excuses and unprofessionalism. No time management or preplanning on heir end. If you knew your previous appointment was running late, you should've had the decency to let me know in advance before I showed up for my appointment . Today I had an appointment at the salon...so I thought. I arrived and my name wasn't in the system. No problems a very nice stylist named Shannon called and asked another stylist named Richelle to come do my hair. She took time out of her day off to work with me which was very generous. But then she arrived and I immediately felt negative energy. I thought maybe because she came on her day so I just ignored the vibes. Welp that negative vibe never went away. I thought they did deva cuts there but she offered to use some other kinda product and a style that seemed new for her. I walked out very disappointed. My natural curls are big and full of life and she basically just twisted my hair which I would've been okay with if 1. I didn't have naturally curly hair 2. If it was a tighter twist It was flat and a ball a frizz waiting to happen. Sooo I decided to fluff it up a little so I can get a least a few good pictures out it which I've attached. I did start to like the style a little more after fluffing but by the night time my hair was looking dry and flaked everywhere...yuck! So,what I return?? Maybe but ONLY if Shannon was available. First,a comment about the service . I am stunned by any reviews that say Richelle is not warm and friendly. From the first time I walked in her door as a new customer I felt extremely welcome and cared for. And I'm not a young cool hipster.... but a woman of a "certain age" who's probably not necessarily the target audience for a cool salon. Perhaps the reviews about attitude say more about the writers themselves ? :) Now about the hair... long naturally wavy,frizzy dry auburn hair that is even more finicky postmenopausal. I walked in ready for a change. Richelle talkd to me ...I told her what "feel" I was after and then I let her have at it. She talked me through the cut and the styling, even giving me the most thorough handout with directions to take home. I ended up with an above shoulders look....a bit beveled. She coaxed the waves out without my frizz. Really happy! Went back a second time wanting a bit more change. I asked if she thought a shorter back would work...and she liked the idea and did it,adding her own touch. On my third visit, I had a specific ask for her. And this is key.....I wasn't completely happy with how my hair looked when I wore it blown out after the second cut. But I realized I hadn't communicated to her that I like to wear it straight some times as well. she listened and knew what to do. Couldn't be happier! Had my hair colored by Shannon... wanted dark purple ... instead ended up with red . She did attempt to correct some serious coloring mistake done by another stylist but still ended up with a bad color. Had to go else where for a complete redo! Let me just say that she stated she was experienced with black/aa Natural hair and could offer nice natural hair styling.. i.e. Two strands. This was not true, she did not understand the need for a deep condition with heat on this type of hair before I told her and styling was terrible and dry. I went back thinking I could work with her because she seemed interested in learning. My experience was a year ago and I hope she has learned but based on my experience they may work with curly hair textures but not African American curly hair. Won't go back. For whatever reason, the review I wrote for the salon last week was filtered from yelp. I think it is important to get my story heard. I went in to see Megan with long, lucious curly hair (almost waist long), and I asked her for something slightly more than a trim. I walked out with a mass of puffy, curly hair that looked like a complete disaster, and it was up to my shoulders. I lost at least 8 inches of length, which will take me over one year to grow back. I wouldn't be as upset if it was a nice, short hairdo, but there is one huge bulky layer that gives me the "triangle look." I have been distraught since this happened 10 days ago, and I have been wearing my hear in buns (it looks bushy and weird in a ponytail now) ever since. People who cut curly hair should know to cut conservatively--you can always cut more length, but once you've cut too much off--there's no going back. Also, I don't think my haircutter realizes that most curly haired people's hair gets curlier the shorter it is, so a 4 inch cut can lop off 8 inches of hair. I'm giving 2 stars because I wasn't charged for the cut (I was literally crying, and I have never cried over a haircut at the salon), but believe me, I would have refused to pay if I had been charged. read more

Owner Richelle was horribly rude as she worked on my hair. She wouldn't talk to me, even to greet me. When I asked a question or tried to talk with her, she would either ignore me or make me feel stupid with the tone she answered in. I have never been treated so unfriendly while getting my hair done. It was awkward and uncomfortable and I couldn't wait for the appointment to be over. The lowlights that were put in my light blonde hair faded after less than two weeks and my hair turned an awful, dirty, green color. I had to go spend additional money at another place to have it fixed. I was charged $170 to be treated like a piece of crap. All I had done was a minimal amount of lowlights and a tiny trim. What a disastrous, expensive experience served with a side of nasty attitude. I would absolutely never go back to Shapes and I would never recommend this salon to anyone. read more

If you have curly hair you HAVE to go here, I cannot say enough about Megan! I am a girl with curly hair and I have had 26 years of bad hair cuts. The only decent ones I ever got was from Jaqueline at the Parlour in Boulder. But I always had problems with my roots--they were never curly. I looked around on naturallycurly.com and found Shapes and the Deva system. They cut your hair dry, which was a new experience for me. Then she went and washed my hair and taught me how to do everything. She went through everything to make sure that I didn't have any questions. Once my hair was dry again, Megan went to fix some cuts on curls that were a little off. Its amazing, she made every curl it's best. And I have curly roots now! The products are totally different too. She taught me about them, and she is so right about what grocery store products do. When I am using the Deva shampoo I don't have to wash my hair for about 4 days and it still looks healthy and good (I do re-wet it and gel it in the morning). I tried to use my old shampoo again, and my roots went flatter and it was all oily the next day. read more

Thank God I went in with a Living Social deal, because if I had paid full price I would have been livid. I basically ended up looking like a crusty Medusa. I have naturally wavy hair, but it's also very fine, so I don't put in a lot of product (no matter how nice/expensive it is) because the curls tend to end up looking sad, limp and crispy. Had my stylist listened to me, this could have ended better. The cut itself was OK, but I didn't leave feeling happy, pampered, or beautiful, and when the regular price for JUST a cut is $72, that's beyond ridiculous. read more

I'm not thrilled with my cut, but it's not bad. I went to Mary, and while she did a dry cut, I don't think she's very familiar with cutting curly hair. She cut my hair mainly in two layers, one at cheekbone level (really too short) and one at chin level. The effect is sort of poodley and crude. I'm not sure she understood how short it would be once it was curly again (she sort of combed out the hair with her fingers as she was cutting). This is still an okay cut, better than if I had gone somewhere random. But I would recommend only going to Mary if you have straight hair, I don't think curly is her specialty. I will say, though, that her own (straight) hair was well cut. UPDATE: It's been about 6 weeks since I went in, and I'm still unhappy with my cut. I visited a friend in LA who cuts curly hair, and she told me that the problem is that Mary was super aggressive with the layers. Apparently, some people learn one cut and just give it to everyone, regardless of hair thickness or texture. So, this is some good advice, whoever you go to: if your hair is not very thick, explain that you want the layers to be closer together. If you have thinner hair, cutting off half of your hair four inches above the bottom layer is just way too much, it makes the hair look lank and thin. Very unflattering. Also, the layers should be 'dynamic', which means that its not just one layer of a shorter length and one of a longer length. read more

I'm blessed with great curls My hair should always look good after a salon visit, so it's just a question of the stylist listening to what I'm looking for and giving me a great cut. In this case, it didn't happen. I asked to keep the length but right now my hair is shorter than it's ever been. When I said I was having a bit of a panic attack over the length, my stylist shrugged it off. I held back tears because it's just hair, but I was visibly miserable leaving the salon. I redid my hair multiple times and after a week it showed improvement. Despite being way too short for my liking, it's a pretty decent cut. Had my stylist communicated with me more, she could have understood how I wear my hair and styled it better and perhaps let up on the scissors or talked to me about how much length she was snipping off. She took a picture of my hair and luckily its from the back because it's not a reflection of a particularly happy client. Right after my appointment I got a recommendation to use Julia. I'm terrified about letting anyone cut my very curly hair, so I did a ton of research before finding Jessica at Shapes (I just moved from NY where I had the same person cut my hair for 20 years). I really just wanted a trim and a shaping and that's exactly what Jessica did - she barely took anything off, but my hair looked so much better. And WOW!! the product line she used, Saryna Key out of Israel - pure shea butter - made my curls look great and my hair feel like velvet. This is a definite keeper!! Cindy Koder is the absolute best at cutting to your specifications, achieving exactly the look you want/need. I have been going to her for several years and it is such a treat. Show her photos, describe what works for your hair, and she will take care to be sure it's perfect. As an added bonus, her practice is such a lovely escape from the race that is life...she uses essential oils and offers a spectacular scalp massage at the start of your visit, and she's just such a wonderful person to talk to. I just got 19 inches cut off my hair, and haven't always had good short cuts, in fact, it could be said I've never had a truly good short cut. I've had two cuts by Julia McBride in the past, so I knew if I was going to trust someone to traumatize me, it would be her. Julia gave me a great cut, and even my friends who couldn't imagine me with short hair love it. I gave her a really vague idea of what I wanted (This really round short curly bob, this is where I part it, and I don't need it casual... ever.) and she ran with it. I wasn't sure my hair would even curl that way, but it sure does! She set me up with a great product that makes my hair so touchable, and it takes two minutes in the morning (TRUE!). When it comes to curly hair, I've seen it all. The good, the bad, and the very, very, very ugly. 'Oh - I know exactly what to do with curly hair,' they say. 'You wouldn't believe, but I actually have really curly hair like yours, but I just straighten it.' There are two things wrong with that statement: First - you don't curly hair. If you really had curly hair you couldn't possibly getting it that straight, let along stay that straight longer than hour. Second - why would I trust someone with my curly hair if they just claim they go to great lengths to hide their own curly hair? So - After 28 years, I finally came to the hard hitting truth - that I was simply stuck with the curly cards that were dealt and I embraced knowing that i would never be the one with the beautiful, free flowing locks like you see in Pantene ads. Every salon I encountered told me the same thing time and time again, only for me to walk out more and more frustrated until I reached the point of defeat and the eventually humor. It's as almost like I went through those phases of mourning: grief, denial, anger, and finally acceptance. And then I saw the light. Shapes walked me through every tiny detail of dealing with not only my curly hair, but the type of curly hair I have. I am Corkicelli curl - a cross between Boticelli and Corkscrew curls. Who knew there were actual different curls and a diagnosis for each of them? And better yet, who knew there was a specific way to deal with each of them? I not only got a killer color job to cover those pesky grays hiding out amongst my dark tendrils, I was shown patience and understanding as I sat there tirelessly trying to explain how frustrated my tresses made me. And never once did Jessica, my stylist, show defeat or fear to take on my mane. I left there feeling like a new woman and excited to know there was someone out there willing to work with the curl rather than to fight it. Amazing color!! I have naturally red hair and wanted to spruce it up a bit. They use Keune dye which I've never heard of but LOVE the results of the vibrant red! It's glorious!! I have thin tigher curls and I'm not a fan of the dry "curly cut". It always leaves me with way shorter hair than a normal cut where they straighten your hair and cut it wet. I've had over a dozen "curly cuts" by many salons all over the United States-- just isn't for me. I think this is an assumption that your curls are going to lay the exact same way every time which mine obviously do not. I called back after I washed my hair a couple times to get a couple uneven spots touched up and I got in with no problem. I will say I'm super surprised to read the negative comments about the owner Richelle--- out of all the curly cuts I've gotten she's hands down the best. She was personable and we had great conversations. I will say when she cuts your hair you can tell she's in the zone-- which I appreciate, she's a serious advocate for your curls! The owner of Shapes Salon is a nasty woman. Her name is Richelle and she shouldn't be in a career that deals with people. I went to have my hair cut with Richelle twice in the past 8 months and both times she was rude and inconsiderate. My first time at the salon Richelle showed up 30 minutes late and blamed car trouble on her tardiness. I thought nothing of it and proceeded to get my hair cut. The cut took a total of 3 minutes which I thought was really short but I trusted she knew what she was doing. My hair style was actually nice and I was pleased with the result. Richelle introduced me to a new hair product which she sold at the salon. The product worked great with my hair and a few months later I needed more. So I drove from South East denver to Lohi at noon on a Tuesday. I assumed the salon would be open but when I arrived it was closed! Desperate for hair product, I went on Amazon to find it. Fast forward a few months later and I needed my hair cut again. I booked another appointment with Richelle and Boy was that a mistake! Right before Richelle started the cut she asked me where I had been getting my hair product. I told her Amazon and she immediately got upset. She stated "why would you do that?? Don't you realize that that hurts a small business like ours?!" She had her hand on her hip and was berating me for not buying from her. I apologized and felt really guilty. I told her the salon was closed when I came to buy her product and only then did she calm down and apologize about not being available during normal business hours. After I left the salon I realized that I had just been yelled at by my hair stylist! I felt upset and told myself I would never go back there. I found another hair stylist and made an appointment in February for a cut in July. I have waited 5 months to write this review as I wanted to make sure my new stylist was capable of cutting my hair well. This review has been five months in the making and its totally warranted as I never forgot about how I was treated that day. People should know that Shapes Salon has horrible customer service and inconsiderate employees. With so much competition and choices, you would think that Richelle would recognize the importance of treating her customers with respect and appreciation. Okay, I know I just reviewed this place and it's technically too soon for an update; but I just went back for a cut and brow shaping and I couldn't feel better!! Shapes was just voted the best salon in Denver for curly hair by Westword, and I know why. Three of the stylists have taken special classes for cutting curly hair and they really know what they are doing. Seriously, I feel like I got a $300 "new york city" haircut, for only $65. The Deva cut really makes a difference - the hair is cut dry so the stylist can see the actual shape of your hair, and the products and styling tools really tame my frizzies. I love Micki and I really love Shapes - and after a visit here, I love my curls (which isn't something I can say all the time). read more

First time to Shapes & Richelle gave me the best haircut of my life!! I tried to give myself a devacut at home a few months prior & I messed myself up. I basically cut off a shelf of my hair on one side & it looked ridiculous for months as I waited for it to grow out. Richelle fixed it entirely & gave me the beautiful layers I tried to give myself! She also gave me AMAZING & QUICK styling tips. Truly styling all my curly hair takes forever.. so I just don't do it, but the methods she showed me for simply letting my hair dry a different way are how I do it every time now! i had high anticipations for Shapes since I have curly hair and it's always positive to find a place that is capable of cutting it. They are big proponents of the Deva products, and if you haven't been using them - you'll love this. As someone who already uses the product, my experience was less exciting. I had a salon in Boston that did just as good a job and only charged $30. My stylist, I think her name was Megan, said that Deva tells them to up the price...but I don't think that's necessary. Afterwards someone else washed my hair. Overall they were congenial but not overly friendly. It's a good place, and I may return for their knowledge of hair cutting-but the overall experience wasn't worth the cost in my opinion. read more

Jeanna did an amazing job cutting my super curly hair! I had a terrible experience at a different Denver salon one year ago, and after Jeanna cut my hair, it FINALLY looks normal again!! My haircut with Richelle was nice. Unfortunately she's an unscrupulous business owner. She "happened" to be out of her new customer gift package and "accidentally" overcharged me for a regular haircut instead of a new customer haircut but I didn't realize until after I left. Twice she told me a package with both was on its way to me. Now she won't respond to my texts. Over a month later, still nothing. Is it because I told her my circumstances and she decided it wasn't worth investing in someone who wasn't going to be a long-term customer? Is that how to run a business? Just asking. read more

I have naturally curly hair and totally embrace it! However it can be hard to find someone that can properly cut and style it. I have had many terrible experiences with hair stylists attempting to cut and style my hair and instead I end up with a poofy mess that doesn't make me happy. Rochelle is very experienced and knows exactly what she is doing with curly hair! If you only want the bare minimum trim she will do that, and not take anymore off if you don't want it. She is great with layering especially with long hair. I've been going to her for about a year now and I am always very pleased with the results. I wish she could style my hair every day! I can't say enough nice things about this salon, and more specifically about Megan. I called at 9 in the morning and (amazingly) there was an open appointment an hour later. When I hit traffic on my way to the appointment and called to say I'd be late, the receptionist assured me that there was no problem, they'd take care of me as soon as I could get there. Megan talked me through the Deva cut, and I ADORE the results. I've never had a cut that was so suited to each of my individual curls. Usually my hair usually freaks out and frizzes after a cut, but one week after the curly girl cut all I'm getting are smooth and shiny coils of curls by following Megan's instructions. I didn't buy the product (too expensive for me) but I'm definitely going back to Megan again--she's expensive too, but it's money very well spent. I highly recommend visiting her. read more

I've lived in a variety different states and climates and have dealt with very dry, course, frizzy, curly hair my entire life. This wonderful, very curly gal approached me one rainy, summer evening in downtown Denver, I loved her hair and couldn't believe how incredibly soft it was and asked who she used. I scheduled a consult with Shannon at Shapes, I was so impressed and she had time, so she went ahead with a cut with my hair dry and very little instruction from me, other than I wanted to retain as much length as possible but preferred healthy looking hair, no dry ends. In one session with Shannon I received more instruction on how to deal with and handle my hair than collectively over the years. After purchasing all the products she used on me, I left feeling much lighter in the wallet than I had originally anticipated but so exciting on how my hair not only looked, but felt, I called a few friends as well as my curly headed daughter (completely different texture than my hair). Before leaving Shannon, I made an appt for both color and a Brazilian blow out, which is supposed to help minimize the frizz. I arrived and told Shannon she was in the driver's seat with the color, I just didn't want to see the grey. She created the perfect and very natural blonde plus the brazilian blow out makes my hair feel even softer and eliminated the coarseness. While this was another hefty monetary hit, my hair almost appears straight coming out of the scalp and curls more with the length, so easy to manage and I no longer use any styling products, simply shampoo and condition, condition, condition. I'm a devoted follower and have already recommended Shannon and will at every opportunity. It is pricey but more so initially as I won't run out of the products at same time or need the brazilian blow out at the same time as a color or cut.
