The project involved…read moretearing out old wall and ceiling material, some re-ducting, new electrical wiring, new lighting, counter top, light fixtures, floor refinishing, appliance installation and painting. This is a difficult review to write, because many aspects of the project were done well, and the overall look of the finished product is fine. But Jeff Kerr showed such poor judgment at the end of the project in cavalierly rejecting a serious complaint, that I have to warn off potential clients from this firm. His painters finished their work while we were away. We continued to be away for many days later. We received an emergency call from an upstairs neighbor, saying that a drain that runs only from our unit, was discharging muck into a neghbor's property. We hired Teevan, a firm that has worked for years on our house, to clean out the drain. The cost to me was $3,800, not a small amount given our total project cost of around $50,000. Teevan found and photographed clumped up blue and white latex paint. These were the colors used by Kerr's painter. The occurrence of this emergency was within a couple of days after the departure of the painter. I emailed Jeff Kerr, and said that 1. I didn't need compensation for the emergency repair, but 2. That I recommended he stop using the painting contractor. Clearly these folks dumped the paint residue down the drain. I thought that I was being quite generous with Jeff. I felt it was appropriate to do this because we had developed something of a social relationship. What a mistake on my part. After not getting back to me for over two weeks, I reminded him of my complaint. He said he had been busy, and then said that the report showed there was brown paint in the residue and that they didn't use brown paint. So, I am left with the conclusion that Jeff Kerr is tone deaf, has almost no sense of how to come part way towards a customer, and in fact, has shown to me that he is "just another shoddy contractor." Potential clients can do better.

Although there were occasional delays, we are very happy with the work 2 years later. Perry, Seth and their team were friendly and accommodating and Perry was good at managing the crew, and clever and resourceful with problem solving. One thing I have noted about contractors in the bay area, they are inundated and tend to over commit, and it does require a persistent home owner to be on their backs a bit to stay on schedule. I had no problem doing this so it worked out for us. Our renovation took a few months longer than expected but we had also been advised by friends to expect this, even from good contractors. Even when they were short staffed, they always sent someone to our place to work, and if something was installed or done in a way that I felt was substandard (I am a perfectionist), they came back immediately and fixed any issues. Thank you SBG!

As a subcontractor, the aspects we favor most in working for general contractors are preparedness, professionalism, consistency and support. I think these traits are certainly favorable to find in a general contractor for homeowners as well so there's some value in seeing a perspective as seen from a position other than that of the homeowner or client. Robert and company are thorough, fair and paved the way for us to do our job as best as we can, accommodating our needs as they arose and I saw them work well with all the other subs and both projects I worked on turned out awesome with great final results. I'd work for them again.

Not only did they build was what designed, they added handrails going down both staircases, which I'm pretty sure is needed to pass inspection, but was left out of the diagrams. Admittedly, it took two months to complete, which was nearly twice as long as I was lead to expect. However, the craftsmanship is top, and I would much rather have a well-constructed, beautiful deck in a longer amount of time than a sloppily built one to meet the deadline. And actually, Billy and Lias, the latter of whom was the actual carpenter, are such nice guys. I sensed that they are honest professionals who had my best interests in mind. Billy also seems well-connected to other well-run businesses, like a stucco person I needed to patch where my old deck was, and a glass place to deal with my kitchen window. I really can't say enough good things about these guys!

She told me that they have completed quite a few projects in the Bernal Heights area. I ended up getting 3 different quotes, and Ross McKenna (of Crown Construction) not only had the best quote, he was clearly a reliable, trustworthy, experienced deck builder (with a cute Irish accent). After accepting the very reasonable quote and a construction date in about two weeks, Ross called a few days later to ask whether it would be convenient for his crew to start early, which was quite a pleasant surprise. He estimated that with including a full day for demolition and pouring concrete footings, the entire project would take about 5 business days. It ended up taking less than 4 days. They didn't accidentally let the dog get out, they left the backyard much cleaner than when they first arrived, Ross answered the phone every single time I called him, and the deck is solid as fort knox. They even built Miss Tummy a little step for her doggie door. I would absolutely recommend Crown Construction without any reservations. Send me a yelp email message if you have any questions.
