My wife and I hired Kerr Construction to remodel our San Francisco kitchen. The project involved…read moretearing out old wall and ceiling material, some re-ducting, new electrical wiring, new lighting, counter top, light fixtures, floor refinishing, appliance installation and painting. This is a difficult review to write, because many aspects of the project were done well, and the overall look of the finished product is fine. But Jeff Kerr showed such poor judgment at the end of the project in cavalierly rejecting a serious complaint, that I have to warn off potential clients from this firm. His painters finished their work while we were away. We continued to be away for many days later. We received an emergency call from an upstairs neighbor, saying that a drain that runs only from our unit, was discharging muck into a neghbor's property. We hired Teevan, a firm that has worked for years on our house, to clean out the drain. The cost to me was $3,800, not a small amount given our total project cost of around $50,000. Teevan found and photographed clumped up blue and white latex paint. These were the colors used by Kerr's painter. The occurrence of this emergency was within a couple of days after the departure of the painter. I emailed Jeff Kerr, and said that 1. I didn't need compensation for the emergency repair, but 2. That I recommended he stop using the painting contractor. Clearly these folks dumped the paint residue down the drain. I thought that I was being quite generous with Jeff. I felt it was appropriate to do this because we had developed something of a social relationship. What a mistake on my part. After not getting back to me for over two weeks, I reminded him of my complaint. He said he had been busy, and then said that the report showed there was brown paint in the residue and that they didn't use brown paint. So, I am left with the conclusion that Jeff Kerr is tone deaf, has almost no sense of how to come part way towards a customer, and in fact, has shown to me that he is "just another shoddy contractor." Potential clients can do better.

Or the fact that they knew we were expecting twins and mentioned a hot, filtered water faucet at the sink to easily warm up bottles?! (Which I've already fallen in love with for my oatmeals and teas) All the subcontractors he used were professional and I felt comfortable with them whenever I dropped by. If the subcontractors did something wrong, Joe would fix it in a nanosecond. Our house is absolutely stunning, spacious, homey and I couldn't be happier. After a few years of having Joe and his crews come out to our house with great results, the last…read moreproject--a full kitchen remodel--showed us he's decided to cut a lot of corners and has basically given up on supervision of his crews. In the past, we've had a great crew for other projects and we saw Joe around almost every day while the work was going on. We felt like he kept the quality of the work at a high level. With our kitchen remodel, Joe seemed nowhere to be found. We had to constantly monitor the crew, correcting blatant sloppiness of the work. As an example, we had to have a painter out 5 times to paint one wall before we finally got it correct. The electrical (done by Kevin, Joe's brother) was passed off to one of his workers. While we did a walk-through on what we needed before the wiring started, none of the information we gave Kevin was passed on to the guy actually doing the work. We had to repeat ourselves constantly to the the man doing the work. Once he had the right info, he did the work adequately, but there was still a lot of re-doing of work throughout the project that should have been common sense: Re-centering a dining room light; placing can lights in kitchen so they're not blocked by cabinets (!!); having to tell them to wire a light already installed in the backyard to the switches in the kitchen (had to tell them 7 times before it happened). The highlight of the whole electrical experience was texting Kevin about an item, then receiving a text (that he obviously thought he was sending to his worker) stating what a "f***ing pain" I was being for asking when he would do something--since he'd stated it would happen two days prior. Other basics had to be repeatedly followed-up on like sealing the front door they installed; getting the door stained and sealed correctly (still never got them to stain around the door knob correctly as they stained around the old lock hardware instead of the new stuff we bought. Was never sure why they didn't stain and seal the door BEFORE the hardware was installed to begin with.); trim around cabinets being installed straight; finishing panels on cabinets being cut straight and without jagged edges; installing cabinet door and drawer handles straight (!!); installing baseboards with some sealant and making them straight with the flooring. During the painting of the entire house interior, they STAPLED floor paper to the hardwood floors. It was 3 months before we think we got the final staple out of the floors. While the floors aren't new, they're not in horrible shape and we weren't replacing them. Staple holes are not an attractive addition to the decor. The painters also re-painted our deck (the one Joe built for us in 2010). Unfortunately, they only scraped the deck, but never power-washed it. The amount of debris and dust from the kitchen remodel on the deck was a lot. After they painted the deck, I had to clean out screws, nails, drywall bits and other debris from between the boards--all of it with sloppy deck paint on it. When I complained, their response was to put another coat on the deck. Less than 6 months later, a good deal of the paint is pealing up since there wasn't a clean base to adhere to. In addition to the painting, we requested Joe replace some boards that were rotting on the deck, as well as closing the back of the stairs for a soon-to-arrive puppy. (We realize this rotting happens living out by the ocean in the Outer Sunset--this is not a reflection of his 2010 build this long afterwards.) He said the boards were fine. Within 3 months after the project, we had to have someone come out to replace the very same boards as they were disintegrating, along with several stair boards. That was an addition $1,300 we had to pay for that. Several of the boards that he installed to close up the stairs are cracked and loose only 6 months later. Again, quality of work was never checked on by him. I think if it had, this type of thing wouldn't happen. I put the review to two stars because the past projects with Joe were great. This one, however, makes us unable to call him again for any project. It's unfortunate. We felt like we were in good hands going into the kitchen remodel. Afterwards, we just hope everything stays together.

Brandan provides thoughtful designs and Matt are communicative and thoughtful. The team of workers in our house were courteous, trustworthy, and skilled at their job. We are now moving onto the kitchen and hope to start that with them again soon!

We undertook a complete re-design of the bathroom, and rebuild of the kitchen going from gas to induction. Pat and his crew proved to be exceptional craftsmen who were consistently punctual, polite, clean, and communicative as we lived in our home while they did the work. On top of this the quality of the carpentry, cabinet install, plumbing, tile, electrical, and painting is all outstanding. Predictably for a house of this age, the project revealed several unexpected challenges. When these issues arose, Pat provided clear explanations of our choices and their consequences, allowing us to move forward with confidence. In addition to our stunning new spaces, the process allowed us to address hidden leaks, HVAC problems, and an electrical panel upgrade, ultimately leaving our home with much stronger infrastructure. In addition Pat and his team were super flexible and accommodating as we added in some additional work along the way. The entire project stayed within the time frame outlined in the proposal, even with the unexpected additional work. Pat is a super nice guy, be cool with him and you'll be delighted with the results. We recently completed a kitchen remodel and part of a house renovation with Dunros construction…read more Firstly, I want to say it's hard to find a contractor. We asked for several estimates and even that was difficult, as everyone had a different idea of what was even possible. But Pat from Dunros really stood out as someone who was polite, realistic, and flexible. We have only wonderful things to say about the experience. He was always creative in his solutions to our tricky kitchen/dining room renovation, which included removing a load-bearing wall. He managed to install beams below the floor that weren't there (as they should have been according to a previous renovation plan) when we opened up the floor. His team was always on time and courteous, and talking to the subcontractors (plumber, electrician, floor installation) you quickly understood they had been working together for years and had a great relationship. Pat is trustworthy and so is his team. He was very good about staying in budget and managing the twists and turns that come with any project. Another thing: our cabinet dealer was terrible, and Pat did everything to work around the problems and delays we had as a result of that bad choice. When we couldn't get replacement parts from the cabinet manufacturer in time, Pat managed to make the parts out of what we had and a lot of hard work. All this was so appreciated because we don't know what we would have done otherwise. I also want to say that Pat is a real perfectionist -- even more than we are, and it's our home he was working on! He always strived to make everything perfect, and a couple of times we had to tell him that we can't see the minor imperfection he noticed and tasked himself with fixing. Pricing was always fair and invoiced clearly. In some cases the amount ended up less than the estimate, which I have never seen before working with contractors.

Although I had designed and built 3 kitchens before this, Andrew had new suggestions that greatly enhanced our final result, well beyond anything I would have dreamed. And best of all, he met schedules at a reasonable price. One way he can control deadlines and costs is that he avoids subcontractors in most cases. His small company consists of himself, in contracting business 30 years, plus his son and his son-in-law. As he says, they have to show up for work! And they are all excellent to work with, including being flexible with my changes as the project went along. As a Realtor, I have worked with many contractors on houses I am involved in. I met Andrew when a client had hired him to remodel a bath, and I was impressed. Since then, he has worked on small and large remodeling projects for several clients as well as friends, and all are quite pleased with not only the result, but the process as a whole. His area is peninsula and Silicon Valley. His combination of good design skills, on-time projects, and good construction skills -- did I mention he builds the cabinets himself? -- at a reasonable price is impressive!

The company did the classic thing of taking twice as long and costing twice as much as quoted but when they were done, the work was terrible too! The walls began cracking almost immediately and we had to have other contractors in to fix all the errors they made. Their people smoked on the job site (so, in our home) and whenever we would try and talk with company representatives, they would try and gaslight us into believing it was somehow our fault. I cannot say strongly enough that you should hire literally anybody else.
