Glacier Basin Trail - Cute little fella

    Glacier Basin Trail

    (2 reviews)

The Glacier Basin Trail is utterly magical in every sense of the word. I must have taken hundreds…read moreof pictures and several videos while hiking this trail. This hike has everything that your little heart could ever desire! A forest full of giant trees. Vibrantly green shrubs. Waterfalls at practically each turn. Majestic views of not only the snow covered mountains, but the gorgeous aqua hues of the White River down below. The rushing river running parallel. Rampant wildlife. Colorful wildflowers. Inclines and elevation galore. I mean, shall I go on?! Just stunning. Glacier Basin is located near the White River entrance of Mount Rainier National Park. The trail begins just behind the White River Campgrounds. It's starts off mildly inclining through a lush forest, but the incline picks up speed and continues to incline until you reach the camp. It's about roughly 9 miles and 2,000 feet of elevation in total if you add in the the detour to the Emmons Lorraine Trail. Do it! It will add another 1.5/2miles to the hike, BUT... this is where you'll find that incredible view of the Inter Fork White River. It's funny that it's called the "white river" because it's stunningly aqua from the top of Emmons Lorraine. The Emmons Lorraine trail is a turn off that's about a mile into the Glacier Basin Trail and includes a river crossing and a steep incline up a narrow hill. It looks a bit intimidating, but it's really not. Just sit on your bum for the really gnarly parts coming down (at least that's what I did). Continuing on the Glacier Basin Trail, it's basically a straight shot up the hill for another 3 miles until you reach the top. There are a few spots with some switchbacks, but it's mostly a ridge-like trail. AllTrails has rated this hike as moderate, but it's definitely on the harder side of moderate if not difficult. What makes this hike so enjoyable though is the fact that there's so much scenery. Every time I took a break, I was either greeted by a beautiful mini waterfall or vibrant wildflowers. The views are very motivating and it keeps you going. Once you reach Glacier Basin Camp, you'll be met with the most stunning views of snow covered Mount Rainier and the rushing waters of the White River right next to it. This hike took me about 5 hours in total to complete (including breaks, lunch, and detours). It's definitely a day hike, so bring enough food and water to keep yourself nourished. Also, make sure you have some really comfortable hiking shoes/boots and hiking poles for the way down if you have bad knees. Coming down can be just as tough as hiking up because of the steepish downhill for 3 miles straight. This one is definitely going in the books as one of my favorite National Park hikes and my favorite Washington state hike thus far. If you're looking for a challenge and a great way to see the beauty of Mount Rainier National Park, Glacier Basin Trail is a great option.

As a Seattle native, I can say that this is my favorite hike I've ever been on. The hike has a fork…read moreabout a mile in. If you fork left, there is a relatively short (~30 min) but steep trail that leads to the glacier basin. The water is a bright teal with mountains in the background, one of the best views I've ever seen. My friends and I went swimming in the basin, which was very cold but also very fun. If you stay on the main trail, it is an additional 6 miles that is moderate-difficult and took about 3 hours to get up. At the top, there is a really pretty meadow and campground. You will need a Mt. Ranier National Park pass ($50 annual or $30/week) to enter. I went on a weekday in the morning and had no trouble finding parking. The main trail was quite empty, but the left fork had a couple other groups. However, we more or less had the place to ourselves. Overall, 10/10 would reccomend!

The restrooms were always kept clean and look as though they have been recently renovated. We were able to ride our bikes from the campground to a forest road giving us access to some very pristine forested land with both paved and gravel roads. First off this property is gorgeous and just absolutely a visual gem…read more It wasnt however all that peaceful, relaxing or worth the cost in my opinion. #1 -- The campsites are your typical campsite - parking spot, pad for a tent, spot for a fire, picnic table, some trees for shade, access to a bathroom - BUT COSTS $70 a night!!! Very pricey. #2 -- Its loud. The property hugs the main highway, and it echoes, and its loud -- ALL DAY & ALL NIGHT. Not the most peaceful. #3 -- The Bathrooms - ugchh -- 2 toilets and 1 coin operated shower for the entire campground. They were very nice, but for $70 a night I expected more than 1 shower. Our first night there I had to wait close to an hour to use it. Also - coin operated?? COME ON!! I just paid $70 for a dirt patch, and I need to pay $2 more dollars for a 4 minute shower? Also just a note for those who dont mind paying for a shower.....once your time expires, shower is over, water is off. No warm water and not even any cold water. Water done. So this means that when you time your shower wrong, and forgot to bring extra quarters with you into the shower, and are covered in soap when the water completely shuts off...that now means you are finishing your shower in the sink. Numbers 1 & 2 made this place kind of a 4 star for me, but the bathrooms is the reason I would never return. Sorry

Even when we went camping at Lake Easton State Park nearby, we tried to come visit the common area at the beach but every time we tried, this place was full and we could not even enter the campground. Lake Kachess has always been an unobtainable dream for us for years, partly because of my lack of planning as online reservation system is available for this site, although I am telling my kids that it is only because this place is so popular that we had not been able to check it out. So, for the past two years, we had been coming to Lake Kachess, getting rejected at the front gate, and still parking near the beach about 0.5 miles before reaching the front gate. We would go stand up paddle-boarding for a couple of hours and we would go to Lake Easton State Park to go to the bathroom and finish our day there. We loved paddle boarding in Lake Kachess so much that I promised my kids we will camp here someday. In this past summer in 2022, I was finally able to snag a reservation for 2 nights. Our camping spot was close to the non-motorized boat launch area. The campsite was spacious, clean, and well-maintained. It was also close to the vault toilets. We have traditionally and intentionally been camping at state parks for their toilet and shower facilities. However, we were aware that Lake Kachess campground was not part of the state park system and does not have nice toilets and showers. So, our expectation of the toilet facilities was expectedly low. Our challenge, however, was dealing with the waste management truck sucking or removing the waste from the vault toilets every morning around 0700. It was very loud and the resulting aroma seemed to have filled the entire Washington state. It was pretty awful but when my kids and I talked about it, we accepted it as part of this camping experience and being in the wilderness. We came here mostly for stand up paddle boarding so with every chance we got, we headed to the beach. We used the non-motorized boat launch area and it was wonderful. In the morning when there are no boats around in the lake, the water was crystal clear and we could see a lot of fish. It was absolutely beautiful. The green trees everywhere contrast really well with the blue sky and everything was serene and breathtaking. The water was cold but we still went into the water to escape the summer heat. It was refreshing and we felt like we became part of the beautiful scenery. Absolutely loved paddle boarding here.

When we showed up to the campsite, no one was there. We tried to contact the owner by phone, email, and text message with no response. Since we agreed upon the date, we set up our tent, called an Uber (the only reason we picked this place was for the shuttle service) and headed to the show. 4 hours passed still with a response. Had to walk back from the venue (Their site says its only 2 miles away but its actually double that) and when we arrived back to the campsite, we were welcomed by a guy shouting (I'm assuming it was the owner) that he was going to shoot us and the campsite was closed. Between all the emails, text messages. and phone call attempts, we were never told that the campsite was closed. The other group of people we ran into were also never told the campsite was closed. We were there for a Journey/Steve Miller concert at the white river amphitheatre, and were waiting for the shuttle graciously provided by the owners for a small fee, when my wife had to go back to the site for something she forgot. We came back to find out we just missed the shuttle. Ric, the owner, happened to be walking by and he offered to run us down in his car. I thought this was a great service to offer after the hard work he had done that day, getting everyone registered and settled in as they were all there for the show too. This place is brand new and Ric and Rebecca will be improving it more and more each year but for a new business they have won our hearts and we will be back for future concerts. I would love to keep this a hidden secret but I promised Ric to share with the world on YELP for everyone to enjoy. We will return!!!!
