The atmosphere is nice, the service was ok. The food is nothing out of the ordinary. Typical Americanized version of Chinese food.

I love when I try a place I have never even heard of and end up completely impressed. That is exactly what happened at Shanghai Garden #1. The vibe felt very local in the best way. It was packed with regulars and you could tell the staff genuinely knew people by name. That kind of energy always makes a restaurant feel special. The food delivered across the board. The panda baos with red bean were both cute and delicious. The cucumber salad was fresh, bright, and perfectly seasoned. The pork xiao long bao were juicy and flavorful with a great balance of broth and filling. And the egg custard buns were soft, lightly sweet, and a perfect way to end the meal. This is our go-to Chinese spot, though we always do takeout and have yet to dine in. The food is consistently good and it's never a long wait time. My husband's favorite is the General Tso tofu. I am a big fan of the chicken chow mein, though the sesame chicken is also great. I wouldn't get the veggie egg rolls again personally. read more

I'm not sure where to start.... First I just had a knee replacement and cannot drive. I accidentally ordered pickup. I called and they couldn't not have been more gracious. They even called after they delivered to check on it. Service like this is more than exceptional. How amazing. Now to the good.... I ordered Sesame Chicken and holy smokes it was DELICIOUS. Last minute decision to eat out and find a Chinese restaurant. Hadn't been to Shanghai Garden for years. Greeted, seated, and 'watered' immediately. Ordered drinks but the only non-Asian beer wasn't available (keg issue). Apparently the barkeep didn't know how to change it out. My wife ordered Sweet & Sour Chicken and I ordered Orange Chicken. I also ordered the Hot & Sour Soup which turned out great. Plus it was a sizable cup! Her main was great but mine lacked a little zing even though there were plenty of dried peppers in it. Tasty with dried orange rinds in the sauce but no spice. Curious. The mild surprise came with the check. My wife ordered brown rice which came with a $2 up-charge. We'd checked their website and the average entree price was between $14.50 - $19.00. However, the menu price came in generally at $17 - $22. Someone needs to update their website!!! read more

Our whole family loved Shanghai Garden last night! The food was flavorful, fresh and beautifully prepared. We especially enjoyed the lemon chicken, Mongolian beef, egg drop soup, egg rolls, cucumber salad, and the Mapo tofu. We've been coming here since they were over in Southglen Mall when it was an enclosed Mall. We know the restaurant had been sold within the last few years and had continued coming in, but this time was our last. They weren't that busy, but they didn't have enough servers and food took forever. They keep cutting menu items and a lot of our favorites are gone now, The amount of meat in the dinner portions is very small, the vegetables were not cooked well, basically raw and it felt like all of the sauces were the same. The egg rolls were pretty bad as well. The only positive was the cheese wontons. I understand times are tough and possibly people aren't coming in, but cutting back on portions and the menu isn't helping. read more

There is a reason this restaurant has been in business for 40 years! It's a neighborhood favorite and the staff is wonderful. We had great service and enjoyed chatting with our server. I am a big fan of appetizers so we had to try a variety and our favorite were the pan fried dumplings. If you're from California you will love Shanghai Garden. It's the closest taste I could find to what I'm used to. The egg rolls are big a crunchy, the noodles are a little smoky, and all their dishes have the best sauces. I used to come here a few years ago and the portions were really small and the price was really big. I think they have fixed that problem because we had plenty of food and two more meals to take home. The service is great, same owner as always and she is very pleasant. I didn't like the comfort of their booths, the back of the booth hits your back at a weird place and I was sitting straight up. Tables were great! I'll be getting the orange beef every visit! So good, sweet and a little spicy with a nice crunch. read more

The server and wait staff was so attentive and also very sweet to our children. The food was great. We're always really happy with the quality of the food. I usually order cashew chicken, but wanted something different and tried the udon noodles and really loved it. It had a good variety of veggies and just a little kick to it. Tucked into a partly-empty little strip mall, this place doesn't look like much on the outside - except for the giant plastic lions - but the inside is very nice. It seems to me this place has been here a while, but everything is spic-and-span and in great shape. Very comfortable booths (which are becoming a rarity). Now to the food. The egg rolls are EXCELLENT. One of my favorites west of the Mississippi and east of San Francisco. The pan-fried dumplings are also delicious. Everything else is standard Chinese-American fare. Tastes good, fills you up, but doesn't "wow". That said, we come here often enough. I have read bad comments about the owner, but she has never been anything less than kind to us. The waitstaff also treat us well. They don't take reservations, but they have a fair amount of seating and staff, so usually not a problem. read more

I give Shanghai Garden a one-star rating only because one-fifth-of-a-star isn't an option. I attempted to dine there just once - an out-of-town guest wanted Chinese on Christmas Eve - so I placed an online order and scheduled a pickup time of 5:45. I arrived at exactly the designated time but was told my order would be ready in a half hour... One hour and forty-five minutes later - it was now 7:30 - I was able to flag down a person to check the status of my order, and was informed that it would be another half hour! The same story was repeated by many patrons cramming the bar area and entryway, some of which reported a three-hour wait. I finally received a refund, but they wouldn't have refunded my online tip had I not caught it on the receipt. I would imagine the food at Shanghai Garden is good enough to attract so much business, but to be so spectacularly unprepared (sidebar: they also ran out of beef during my wait) on a holiday is inexcusable. Anyone choosing to dine at Shanghai Garden will simply be rewarding incompetence. read more

We just discovered this place although it's been there for many years. We almost didn't get there because I got lost. But we found it and we were very happy we did. The food was very good, perfectly prepared and very taste. We were seated very fast, received side plates and water quickly. Then given plenty of time to consider the options. So many choices and they all looked good. We ordered and were served without a long wait. The restaurant is clean and neat. The servers were clean and neat. On the way out I stopped to speak to a couple of ladies, who I assumed had been there before. I was correct. They were regulars. They told me everything was always great there at the Shanghai Garden. We have eaten at Shanghai Garden for years and have always enjoyed it--until tonight, that is. There were five of us, so they seated us at one of the large tables. After we ordered and got our drinks, they told us we would have to move because a larger party needed our table. They put the five of us at a four-top, and we had to move everything ourselves. My husband made 3 trips between tables. Once there, we realized there wasn't room for the food, so we had to move again, this time to a booth with an extra chair. It was so crowded, we had to keep juggling things around. There definitely was not room for five of us in that booth. After we were half through two of our main dishes, they brought the lemon chicken. That is usually a favorite, but it was terrible tonight--dry and tough. We definitely should have been comped for something. Also, they should have moved the items between tables. $176.00 before tip--too expensive for Chinese food. read more

The bottom line is I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but I would absolutely stop in if I was in the area. It was decently good Chinese food. The tea was hot and fresh. We have a suspicion the egg rolls were not house made, which is a bummer, because they were huge. The sesame shrimp were delicious with a sweet and tangy sauce. The chicken with garlic sauce had a umami flavor that I couldn't quite place, but was really yummy as well. Service was lacking. They brought our food and we didn't have any forks or napkins...so had to wait until we could get someone's attention. Oh, and be warned, the cheese puffs literally only have cream cheese, no crab and onions. read more
