I have been going to Shanghai for years. I can tell you that the food is consistent and good. If you want gourmet Chinese food then go to PF Changs. This is a neighborhood place and it's the standard place for my family's takeout. My favorite is the General Tso's Chicken, Chicken and Broccoli, and the Hot & Sour soup. As for the reviewer that complained about rodent traps. Most restaurants have rodents! How do you think exterminators stay in business? This is my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant I've ever been to. Not to mention that I have known the owners of this restaurant since before I could walk because I went to the same daycare as their son and then proceeded to go to the same preschool, kindergarten, grade school, and high school as well so I have known this family pretty much my whole life. The service here is always perfect and you will ALWAYS be greated with a smile everytime you come into this restaurant. I ordered enough food to feed 8 people. Half was really good and half was bad. We also ended up missing a dish. We paid for 2 orders of General tso's tofu but we only received 1 order and that was the dish we liked the most. Between the missing food and the 2 orders of food we hated (Szechuan tofu) I'm super bummed about the experience here because we wasted money. The guy who took our order was very friendly though. He remembered my husbands name from our phone order and treated him kindly as he waited (a pretty long wait, but again, we ordered a lot of food). My husband appreciated the guy's friendliness. I think we whist wish they checked the order before passing it off to us. It was a take out order and you know they staple the bag so everything stays warm on the way home. We used to be regular customers of this place, back when Kenny owned it. It was fantastic!! Well due to the current stay home suggestion, we placed an order for delivery. This was the second time in a few months we ordered, and it will be the last. The first recent order we asked for 2 large bags of the crunchy noodles that we paid for, however they were left out of the order. Today we ordered a 2L Sprite ($3.50, outrageous!!) and that was forgotten. When I called the store about it (after the driver stated he would bring it) Teddy stated it was not being delivered. Understand the order had been paid for by credit card prior to delivery. Included in the order was 2 orders of fried chicken wings, Lg spare ribs, egg roll, and beef with garlic sauce combination. The spare ribs were burned, and not very meaty. The garlic beef was so spicy it was inedible, however the container was all rice, broccoli but almost no beef. The fried chicken wings were super greasy, and not crunchy. When the food delivered by Shanghai Express is compared to China 1 (also in Marlton) China 1 beats Express by miles. China 1 is far less expensive, and offers larger portions of everything. I do not think we will ever patronize Shanghai Express again. read more

I got delivery for this first time from Shanghai Express. I'm new to the area and saw that this place had great reviews on Yelp. I was let down tho by the food. I ordered sweet and sour chicken (my favorite) and it was over cooked. The chicken was dried out, and the batter was hard and dried out. My boyfriend got the General tso chicken after the MANY recommendations on Yelp. He was not happy with his food either, The chicken was dried out, and the batter was overcooked. Stopped in here for lunch because I was working nearby. My lunch special was very tasty - good egg drop soup, shrimp with garlic sauce that had nice sized firm shrimp and vegetables that still had color and crunch, accompanied by a big pile of pork fried rice. My workmate was equally pleased with his sesame chicken, which had nice crisp crust even when accompanied by sauce. Owners are very pleasant and welcoming. Have been going to this restaurant for 20 years. Teddy the owner is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. The food has always exceeded expectations and any special orders have always been met. The best part is if Teddy makes a mistake he will ALWAYS offer to fix it. We just moved to town and were looking for a new Chinese take out joint. Unfortunately we were very disappointed, despite the rave reviews we heard about this place. We tried a variety of dishes: shrimp lo mein, veggie mei fun, king pow chicken, General tso's, wonton soup, egg drop soup, crab rangoons, fried rice, and roast pork. Everything got a resounding "meh." The one thing that stood out for me was the egg rolls. They were fresh and yummy. The fried rice was fine. The generals needed more sauce, the lo mein was oily and tasted burnt, the crab rangoons tasted like cinnamon and had a weird shell, and the mei fun and Kung pow chicken both had zero flavor. This was my first and last experience with this restaurant I saw reviews online and was going to try. I ordered food then the guy called me saying my card was declined. I said no it went through they just notified me. He proceeded to argue with me telling me I had no $ on my card. I kept telling him I see it right here u charged my cc. I was so frustrated I had my cc company call him to tell him he charged my cc and it went through. He then attempted 2 more times which my cc company declined the transaction. Every visit to this restaurant is special. My s/o and I frequent this establishment, and when one of us is absent the owners will ask, often by name, where we are. The consistently PHENOMENAL customer service extends to their DELICIOUS food, legitimately some of the best Chinese in the area. Do you ever find yourself driving home and you are hungry but know that you have no energy left to cook? Been there and my solution is to stop at Shanghai Express. The owner or his wife greets you warmly and are very accommodating to any requests for spice adjustments or suggestions. They have a dish called "mish mosh" which includes a little something to please any and everyone. Their Chinese 5 spice duck will rival any duck dish in the area. Keep in mind that if you want Peking Duck, you need to order that a few days in advance. I haven't done that yet but intend to in the near future. All of the soups are delicious. The chef specials are just that-special and delightful. The owner is willing to converse with you and make dishes that are off the menu. read more

Ordered take out from here tonight. We asked for hot oil and was not given any and the food was blah. My husband and I ordered the house special pan fried noodles, crab Rangoon and moo shu pork with pan cakes. The pan fried noodles were not the thin noodles, instead they fried lomein noodles. The crab Rangoon was not good. They used the thicker skin wonton wrappers which some places were super hard and the moo shu pork was too salty. Will not be ordering from here again. read more

This was my first visit here and I was pleased by the friendliness by the gentleman behind the counter. If a zero star or a negative rating was possible i would definitely give shanghai express a negative five. my name is phil g and i've been coming to this place for years. i ordered the chicken and broccoli with brown sauce combo for 10.95. my food came out and the chicken portion was ridiculously small. so i asked the waiter for an extra two dollars worth of chicken because there was hardly any on the plate. i finished eating and got the bill. for one diet coke, a glass of water, an appetizer of honey sesame chicken and my combo of chicken and broccoli the total was 29$ and some change. they charged me 6 dollars for a tiny plate of chicken. my entire entree was 17$ and change. i was outraged at the bullshit price for additional chicken. long story short, if you want to get ripped off for dinner, definitely go to shanghai express. i will never go here again and i advise anyone in the area to not go there. go to asian chef on union mill road in mount laurel. they have amazing food. you might pay a little more then 11$ for a combo but you will get plenty of meat, rice, and vegetables.( getting your money worth is always a plus) read more

I half-jokingly like to consider myself a connoisseur of Chinese takeout (college student life is no joke), and I can confidently say that the chinese food from here is probably one of the best in the area. I called in, and the gentleman who answered the phone was super polite and friendly, not something that I've experienced in the past with other places.
