Service was wonderful and attentive. The dishes were decent size portions. We had: steamed fish, Fried rice, general tso, cumin beef, fried soft shell crab, spare ribs, sliced beef and tripe, fried diced chicken w/ dry red chili, shrimp and beef stir fried rice noodles, and Ong Choy wit garlic sauce. Everything was flavorful. We asked to make everything mild or no spice. The cumin beef was slightly spicy. The sliced beef and tripe is an extremely spicy and numbing dish. I loved the fried soft shell crab. Spare ribs were marinaded and fried well. The fried rice was good but was too salty. Mixing it with some white rice was perfect. Toothpick Lamb - favorite! Was a dry rub spice on small pieces of lamb on toothpicks. Learned the toothpick is so the lamb doesn't stick together when cooking Salt & Pepper Fried Frog this was good. Stopped back in - the kids like the ma po tofu, spring rolls, and the pork spare ribs with garlic (they didn't have the salt pepper ribs anymore). Lots of rice to go with that! They didn't like the tomato-sauce based spicy stir fried shredded potato (mild) though, the sour and spicy version at Hot Fish was declared better. The adults liked the beef stir-fried rice noodle, the chicken in chili oil (missed the chili oil initially, they brought it back out and was great over rice), thin sliced beef in golden sour soup was excellent, though not quite sour enough for some, cauliflower dry pot was good with pork (less spicy), and mae xue wang was just right on spice and flavor. Dessert - the mini rice ball in sweet rice wine soup was a hit all around. Good dessert and treat! Definitely busy after 5:30p, good thing we came earlier. Best authentic Szechuan food in the area! They have Americanized options, but they also have all the traditional spicy Szechuan food. We ordered the double cooked pork belly, toothpick lamb, stir fried green beans and mapo tofu. The toothpick lamb was really really good! Definitely the best and most unique dish we had. We also got the sweet rice wine soup with rice cake balls, which had black sesame paste inside which was a super nice treat! Good food that came out quickly for takeout. Would return. Saw this place a few years back and tried it last week when in the area. Glad I did. The menu is more streamlined than when it opened but still has some of my favorites including shredded pork. We tried the following for takeout: Shredded pork in sweet bean sauce - this came with sliced scallions in a sweet bean sauce accompanied by soft pillowy buns instead of pancakes. A nice touch. The pork was tasty and went quickly. Shredded pork with dried tofu - this came with celery in a light savory sauce, with a little more tofu than pork. Very good. HomeStyle stir fried tofu - this came with wood ear mushrooms in a brown sauce and my wife especially liked it. General Tso's Chicken - this came with broccoli and was also good. Parking is in a shared strip mall lot. Had no problem finding a space. Waited a few minutes for pickup as the restaurant was starting dinner rush. I ordered by phone since their online service was not taking orders. Would return if in the area. Note they are closed Tuesdays. read more

Chef Zhang is, in my and my fiancé's opinion, the BEST Chinese restaurant in the area. I cannot tell you how many times we've either dined here or have debated dining here. Every time we plan to eat out, Chef Zhang is mentioned by at least one of us as an option. Usually, when we arrive for dinner on the earlier side it's pretty slow, but halfway through our dinner it gets very busy. The service is always good. The servers are very kind, are constantly making rounds to refill our waters (Chef Zhang is BYOB so we always have some wine), and we never feel rushed. Some of our favorite dishes include salt & pepper fried fish filets, minced pork in garlic sauce, double cooked pork belly, and the best scallion pancakes around. You really can't go wrong with anything on their menu unless you can't handle heat as some of the dishes do get pretty spicy. At our most recent visit we ordered the toothpick lamb. It was amazing! The crisp texture, the flavors, the heat. As long as I have someone with me that is willing to split it (my fiancé doesn't like that kind of heat) I'd order it every time. One of my favorite things about Chef Zhang, other than how consistently flavorful and enjoyable the food ends up being, is the portion sizes of each dish as they're perfect for sharing! This is the perfect restaurant to dine with a group of people, order various different dishes, and split/share everything. Some of the round tables even have Lazy Suzans which makes sharing with a group even easier. We're so lucky we have such a quality restaurant this close to home. If you enjoy spicy food, then this is the place for you. But(t), if you're sensitive to MSG, it will utterly destroy you. Despite requesting my dish without MSG, it was still added. However, my wife thoroughly enjoyed hers since spicy food and MSG don't affect her like they affect me. I ordered the beef mei fun dish and the soup dumplings, but wasn't thrilled with either. I suspect the soup dumplings were not freshly prepared but frozen, as the quality was similar to that of store-bought ones. Now I've had freshly prepared soup dumplings, and so I know what they should taste like. This wasn't that. The beef mei fun was alright, but the MSG added to it ruined the experience. Now the portion sizes are HUGE, so you'll certainly get your money's worth. I just wish they wouldn't add MSG, when in fact, they do. read more

traditional chinese restaurant with authentic sichuan food! i've heard this restaurant referred to as the best chinese restaurant in the area multiple times now, so naturally i had to check it out. it definitely didn't disappoint! the food was perfect for family-style, and the portions were extremely generous. everything was so delicious, and i loved that their sichuan food was actually spicy enough. we ordered the chicken in chili oil to start (口水鸡) which was actually my favorite dish of the night. the chicken was perfectly cooked, so tender and flavorful. we also shared the fried diced chicken with dry red chili (辣子鸡) and the stir-fried pork feet with pickled chili (泡椒蹄花) which were both spicy and delicious. the chicken dish is a classic sichuan item, and the chicken was perfectly fried. it actually looked better than the photos, and there was a significant amount of chicken. i was pleasantly surprised by the pork feet, it's not something that i typically would order but i enjoyed it much more than i expected. we rounded all the meat we ate out with the spicy stir-fried cabbage which was fresh and flavorful. we were sat at a booth which was roomy and comfy. there were plenty of open tables available at 7pm on a thursday, but there were several other groups enjoying dinner as well. the vibe is more old-fashioned, classic traditional chinese restaurant. service was good, our waitress was on top of filling our waters. overall, i really enjoyed this spot and would highly recommend it if you're a fan of mala (麻辣). everything we ate was spicy, we didn't try any of their non-spicy items, and i think that was the right move -- it's clear that sichuan-style food is what this spot is so well known for. only complaint is that it's not in the city, but i'm definitely gonna make my friend drive me out here again! read more

Amazing place. Stopped in Saturday night for dinner and was greeted with amazing smells and delicious looking meals from all the full tables. The place was almost full but we were lucky to get the last booth. We started off with the pork soup dumplings which were small in size but large in flavor. Full stop. if you love Szechuan you need to go to Chef Zhang. They've got a totally authentic menu with chicken, beef, lamb, shrimp, but then kidney and intestine and ... you get the idea. It's quite an extensive menu as well. Much bigger than most Szechuan places that tend to hone in on the classics. Next, they rate the spice from 0-3 which seems like a small scale. Well, I can handle some pretty good spice and 1 had me in a bit of a head sweat. So 2 would have been HOT. 3...not sure I want to try 3! There are plenty of 0s on the menu so don't fear the spice. And for those less adventurous, they do have a few standard Chinese American classics on there as well. Service was great. Decor was I'd say above average for a mom and pop Chinese restaurant. This was my godson's favorite restaurant--he was an active Marine. He brought us here during Memorial Weekend this year, along with some of his fellow Marines. The food was absolutely incredible--every dish was full of flavor and reminded us of the quality you'd find in San Gabriel, California. His Marine friends were so excited to eat that I didn't even have a chance to take any pictures! Tragically, my godson passed away from leukemia not long after that visit. When we returned to the restaurant, the owner, her daughter, and her daughter's husband welcomed us with heartfelt warmth and compassion. Chef Zhang - Marlton Spicy Chinese food, "Oh, I could die for you." There's not many more food delights that I have than getting the lip tingling, mouth numbing sensation from Sichuan peppercorns and other hot chili's. When I walked in and saw Lazy Susan's on some of the tables, I knew I was in for an old school treat. Chef Zhangs offers some of your Americanized classic Chinese dishes, but they also have items that you aren't going to find at your typical spots. Some of these dishes include stir-fried intestines with hot peppers, spicy stir-fried kidneys, salt and pepper fried frogs, just to name a few. Those dishes would be a little too adventurous for me to take on all by myself, but if I were to go with someone who has a comfort level eating those, I'd really like to try them and expand my horizons and give them a try! Pictured here are the pork soup dumplings, toothpick lamb with dry red chili, and stir-fried sliced pork with hot pepper. Of course, I asked for everything extra spicy. Everything was exquisite! The spicy heat levels were on point. I appreciate they took my request seriously. The toothpick lamb, the bite of pepper along with the ginger and garlic, oh my, it was just divine. The sliced pork (they asked if pork belly would be okay and I wasn't going to say no) had at least 3 different types of peppers. I have a high spice tolerance, so I was still able to taste everything and enjoy. This is some of the best Chinese food I may have ever had. It's a spot I know I'm returning to next time I want legit Chinese cuisine. Also, I have to note that they brew you fresh loose tea and not something from a tea bag. They don't need bonus points from me, but they get it anyway. Pretty authentic Szechuan cuisine, the portion size it big, so come with a crowd. Their fish is a signature dish and comes in a large pot. Shareable by 4-5 ppl (if you also order other dishes). Our favorite Szechuan restaurant closed so we were looking for a new spot to fulfill the cravings. This restaurant was close by and had good reviews so we wanted to give it a try. Very tasty, but wasn't the best we ever had. We do not plan on reordering the same things we bought tonight. We ordered scallion pancakes, smashed cucumbers, mapo tofu and general tso. The prices were reasonable and food came out hot and fast. We ordered scallion pancakes, but they accidentally gave us spring rolls instead. Vegetables with vermicelli noodles. Solid but would've been better if it came with sauce. Smashed cucumbers were refreshing and a huge quantity. Great palette cleanser when eating spicy food. Entree time. General tso was not great. It honestly tasted a day old. Chicken was very dry, and most importantly the sauce was extremely sticky and mucous like. I can't explain it but the sauce was so sticky and mucous like. Flavor was still there and it was still addicting. It had a chili pepper emoji on the menu, but zero spice. Mapo tofu was spicy, flavorful, and great packaging. A bit stingy on the minced pork and the tofu was too soft for my liking. We did think the mapo tofu was the best thing we ate tonight. My husband and I were craving schezuan food and this place hit the spot! You know when it's so spicy and the water tastes sweet, I love it. We got the dry pepper chicken, cucumber salad, mapo tofu and beef chow fun. Cucumber salad was refreshing and the perfect side to cool your mouth down in between bites. The dry pepper chicken was perfectly spicy and I loved that the pieces were meaty and juicy! Perfectly fried Mapo tofu was soooo delish, I like my tofu a little bit softer but it still hit the spot. Came here with some girlfriends the other day and I will say that this is the best chinese restaurant in south Jersey. This is my second time trying it and the flavor and freshness of the food did not fail. The lo mien had springy noodles with garlicky sweet flavor. The fried chicken with chili peppers tasted peppery with a nice crunch even after time has passed. Mapo tofu was delicious as was the sweet and sour chicken. Last time I came I tried some of their authentic pork and fish dishes and it was also soft and flavorful. The dishes come with a big bowl of rice that was enough for 4 people. I was the only non Asian customer during lunch which is also usually a good sign. There was not a lunch special menu so we had to order off the main dinner menu. Sliced Beef and Tripe in Chili Oil: 4/5 great combination between spicy and cold. It looks like a lot at first but the bottom is full of onion that helps break the spice if you like onions. One or two pieces of tripe wasn't cleaned the best. Braised Frog Legs: 3/5 Not bad. Great heat and some flavor. Probably one of their more spicy dishes. There could have been better pieces of frog legs with more meat in them. The dish is kinda lackluster. Toothpick lamb: 4/5 Really solid dish of crispy pieces of lamb. Each bite is a power burst of flavor and spice. If you come here this is a must get dish if you like meat! I can only speak for take out as I didn't have the dine-in experience. I ordered the general tso's chicken and the green beans. The genera tso's was more breading than chicken and wasn't that great. The green beans had a little kick and were tasty (though not the best I've had from a Chinese restaurant). I think that this place is better suited for the more traditional Chinese meals. Also heads up, they've changed and downsized their menu quite a bit, so many items are no longer available. It's best to check the menu directly on their website. read more

I used to enjoy the food here, especially the Mao Xue Wang, but tonight was a major disappointment. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and Sichuan Boiled Beef, and neither dish was up to par. The Kung Pao Chicken was overly salty, and the chicken itself was so overcooked it was tough to chew--nothing like the photos others have posted. The beef had the same issue: overcooked and difficult to eat. Very disappointing experience this time. As a Chinese person who has been to Chinese restaurants her whole life I've come to expect that the food will be good but rarely great. Especially with the volume of Chinese restaurants everywhere including in Philly Chinatown not too far from here, it can be hard to stand out. Chef Zhang surprisingly exceeded my expectations! We were greeted and seated quickly. We arrived around 1130 am on a Saturday morning but by the time we left around 1pm it was packed with other Asian families (good sign). The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated, with plenty of seating. Scallion pancake 5/5: This place does these right -- thin, crispy, not too doughy, and with a great sweet tangy soy sauce Spicy seafood soup 5/5: Very generous portion even for our group of 6! Definitely has a pleasant kick of spice and reminiscent of hot and sour soup Beef chow fun 5/5: my family orders this at pretty much every Chinese place and we use it to judge everything else. I loved their version! Tender beef and chewy bouncy noodles Ox tail 3.5/5: Disclaimer I am not a big oxtail fan but it was cooked very tender. Sauce was okay compared to other dishes Sweet and sour pork 4/5: generous portion but just so-so. There are better things on the menu but pickier eaters/children will enjoy Eggplant with minced pork 5/5: possibly my favorite dish of the day! Perfectly cooked eggplant with really nice wok flavor. I am from NY, I went to visit a friend that lives in Jersey and my friend was telling me how he really liked this place so we decided to go with a group of 5 adults and 2 kiddos for dinner and we ordered a shit ton of food. I was pretty surprised how authentic the flavors were, the portions were huge and the prices were very fair. I would easily revisit this place. Also, the menu is giganto. The food: Fried Lamb w. Cumin- This was my fav dish, the lamb was so tender and the cumin added such a depth of flavor. Scrambled Eggs w. Shrimp- So this dish is very near and dear to many who visited Chinatowns because this dish is such a staple, the dish here was kinda pricey for what it was but the chef made this dish perfectly. The eggs were perfectly cooked and there was an abundance of shrimp, not the best shrimp but still good flavor. Fish Fillet in Hot Chili Oil- This dish was great, I thought the flavor was really good and I enjoyed how bouncy the fish was but I can't eat too much of this because it was too oily for me. I think it was great for the first few bites then I had to wash it down with some veg. Eggplant w. Garlic Sauce- I thought this was delicious. They use Japanese eggplant and the eggplant was cooked perfectly and I loved the flavor of their garlic sauce. Curry Chicken- I was surprised how good this was, I thought the chicken thigh offered nice flavor and was cooked right, the flavor of the curry was more aggressive in flavor than I was expecting but I liked that it had a robust curry flavor. Sliced Beef & Tripe w. Chili Sauce- This is such a staple dish and the one here was made well. Pan- Fried Pork Dumplings- While I appreciated that this was made in house, I felt the dumpling came off kinda oily and the filling was kinda bland. Ribs Dry Pot- This was OK, ribs had an OK flavor. I thought this was a middle of the road dish. Pork Soup Dumplings- I didn't really care for these, they were not made in house. Beef Sizzling Plate- My friend enjoyed this dish but to me, it felt too coming home after elementary school kinda dish. XO Sauce Fried Rice- I didn't really like this dish, I believe they used frozen seafood and the seafood funk kinda permeated throughout the dish in a bad way. read more

This place is seriously super!! We've gone a few times now and tried quite a few different things on their menu. Everything has been fantastic. Most recently, we've loved their fried lamb with cumin and their fish fillet with Szechuan green pepper. The fried lamb is thinly sliced and so flavorful! The spicy fish soup is so fragrant with the perfect amount of mala. Portion sizes and prices are also phenomenal! Service is always polite. One thing to note is that they don't have a fair number of items on their menu, especially in the dim sum section and I think maybe some of the more seasonal vegetables. We were in the mood for soup dumplings and found that Chef Zhang's had it on their menu! They have a lot of what looks like authentic dishes within their menu and a menu that you would find in a typical Chinese take out menu. So many different options! In addition to the soup dumplings we asked the server to make a recommendation for us. He had an iPad full of different pictures! He eventually told us about the fish and lamb soup and showed us a picture. It did not disappoint! The soup was full of flavor and still light. There was so much flounder in the soup and thing slices of lamb. The soup dumplings were also fresh and amazing. We loved the dipping sauce as it added a hint of tanginess. At first, I thought it was a wee bit expensive, but when the portions came out, WOW! Big portions, and even better, everything was delicious.
