Happy hour is from 3-6pm. We arrived before it ended and so we took advantage of their happy hour specials. There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant. We were greeted by a friendly and nice waiter and seated right away. There was only one other party in the restaurant on a Saturday evening. The food was hit or miss. The scallion pancakes were very oily, but the spicy wontons were good. The Char Siu Bao was ok but we liked the Har Gow shrimp dumplings. The pan fried pork and chives dumplings were a bit disappointing but we liked the duck bao tacos. The hot sake was a deal on the happy hour menu and we enjoyed that with our meal. Might try them again for dinner options next time we're in the area. My friend wanted dumplings that evening we were there. read more

Unfortunately I recently had a bad experience and don't plan to come back because of the way the owner handled it. I ordered the lotus trio through Uber Eats close to closing time. I was excited to have this favorite dish, and the first two buns were great. The third however had several small hard pieces (of bone?). I immediately called the restaurant and spoke with Diana who was very apologetic and nice. She said she'd contact the owner and someone would follow up with me the next day (since it was already closing time). The next day came and went but I never got a call. I called back and spoke with a guy (Ryan I think) who was also very nice and said he'd contact owner. Then I got a call back from him that the owner told me I had to contact Uber Eats for a refund. I told him that I didn't want a refund. I just wanted the owner to know and to just put a credit towards my next order or to remake the order. He relayed that to the owner and told me she said I have to deal with Uber Eats. I contacted Uber Eats who said since 48 hours had passed they don't refund and sent me back to the restaurant, who told me again to contact Uber Eats. Anyway you get the idea. The owner did not even bother to contact me or seem concerned that there was a QC food safety issue. I never asked for a refund but am extremely disappointed by the owner's response or lack thereof. The staff I spoke with were great but the poor leadership will likely be the downfall of this restaurant. It's really too bad, because I have been supporting and rooting for their success since Day 1. read more

Food and Service: A take out order and there was A HAIR was in my food. I BROUGHT IT BACK AND THEY WOULD NOT MAKE IT AGAIN UNLESS I PAID FOR A NEW ORDER. I left the order and said bye. Like forever. Their services never been that great but this was even elevated to the manager and they still wouldn't make it right. Totally unacceptable. Keep in mind I have been going her for the past 7 years. The service was super friendly. The egg drop soup came out fast and was very flavorful. It came with a side of wonton chips which pair well with the sweet and sour sauce at the table. As for the Shanghai Bun and Shrimp Noodle Rolls... The Pork and Shrimp Shu Mai was hands down the stand out. Although the fish roe on the shu mai was questionable with its gel like appearance, the pork and shrimp was well seasoned. Also the pork was minced instead of ground so it has a bit more texture. As for everything else... the Shrimp Noodle Rolls, shrimp dumpling (Har Gow), shanghai pork dumpling, and shrimp & chive dumpling all looked and tasted like they got it from the freezer section at 99 Ranch Market. The noodle rolls and skin on the dumplings were thick gooey. The Shanghai pork dumpling was the most evident as the folds appeared to be machine made instead of hand made. Finally the sauce that came with the Shrimp Noodle Rolls was basically soy sauce and vinegar... it didn't have the sweetness that is expected. My husband and I went here for brunch a few weeks ago. Interior seemed a bit dark so we opted to sit out back on the patio and were seated promptly. Justin was our waiter. He was polite, personable, very attentive, and answered our questions on selections. High marks for Justin! Delicious meal today! We were headed up to another of our favorite spots but decided to try something new and wow am I happy we did. I will for sure be in again for the brunch. The menu item are really reasonable priced. I loved the hot mustard and the the house made dumplings sauce. The taste, the texture, and everything about my Taro that I ordered was not what I would expect when ordering Taro bubble tea. Put simply, it's bland and the quality is not there. Growing up near Chicago, my family would go to Chinatown where we would eat in various small, independent restaurants. That was something that I always looked forward to. Since moving to San Diego, I noticed the lack of Chinese restaurants in the area. Noticing that Shanghai Bun had opened nearby, I was excited to try it. When I looked at the menu, I realized that some of it is Chinese fusion, and they specialize in various dumplings. However, I was craving some of my favorite Chinese dishes from childhood. My husband and I ordered delivery one evening to satisfy my cravings. When the food arrived it was still nice and hot. My husband had ordered some of the cream cheese wontons and I tried one. It is a simple enough dish and nothing was wrong with it, but I have never seen smaller ones before. In fact, the entire order was so small that my husband had initially though they had forgotten them, as he couldn't find them in the deliver bag. I chose the Moo Shu chicken and hot and sour soup. I don't think the soup was great, as it was a bit of a thicker consistency than I was used to. It also needed more spice. As far as the Moo Shu, the flavor and texture were good. I am not sure if they make them in-house, but the pancakes that you use to wrap the Moo Shu were the perfect consistency. All in all, this food satisfied my cravings, but was not anything too special. I would try Shanghai Bun again, but maybe try some of the fusion dumplings next time. read more

I am so disappointed with Shanghai Bun. My family and I have eaten here for years. We recently order take out and were given the wrong dumplings. I called them back once realizing it was the wrong order and they told me to bring back any of the "uneaten" dumplings and they would replace them with the correct ones. I was very taken aback by this request, but OK. I put the dumplings in the car and drove back. On my way there the restaurant called me and said instead of swapping them, they would need to charge me for the new dumplings and a refund would be issued in 2 to 3 business days for the wrong order. Oh and the 1 dumpling that was eaten which is how I discovered it was the wrong order, they would need to pro-rate the refund for that one. I was so put off at that this point that I told them to just forget about it. It's a good thing I wasn't allergic to shrimp when I had ordered pork dumplings. Sadly this experience pit the nail in the coffin for me. We won't be back, and hopefully no one has gotten someone's returned dumplings... read more

Im 50/50 on this place. Some standouts and some disappointments. We came here after a sunny walk and were parched. In addition to ordering our very delicious milk teas, we asked for water. After finishing our teas, we did have to ask again for the water. They had a huge water pitcher on the bar, but it was empty. It came in handy after I drank the first glass like a camel after a long sunny race. My chair had some sticky goo on it, but it wiped right off. There was one couple at the bar waiting for a to go order and one couple already eating inside. So I was very surprised at how slow our service was. Hubby had the beef and broccoli, which I'd personally call fantastic. I had the shanghai sampler. I wish I'd known which bun was which, because there were some I didn't care for. The pork buns were wonderful. My daughter had the lotus trio. She said the duck was a standout. Dessert wise, my daughter loves red bean filling. She loved the peach buns. I ordered the banana and ice cream. I'm not sure if the banana was too green, but it had no sweetness or flavor. The ice cream was nice. They had an interesting list of drink specials, I would definitely recommend having a drink here while waiting for your order. 3.5 stars. I like the adventurousness of the food here and I believe that the chef they've had for the last several years can pull off the different Asian dishes on the menu quite well. It's wild to get good sticky rice three blocks from WASPy white Shelter Island. But this was the first place I ever spent $10 for a beer in San Diego and some of the items are extremely pricey. So I like the people who work here and I like a lot of the food but I'm not sure if ultimately it's a better value than just going to Convoy Street for what is more likely to be an authentic "Shanghai" experience.
