This may have been my first visit to a Shakey's where I wasn't wearing a baseball uniform. I think the last time I went to Shakey's (not this location) was after a Little League game--one that I played in. That was [insert ridiculously large number here] years ago. There used to be Shakey's locations everywhere. If you played sports as a kid way back when, your team went to Shakey's to celebrate a win. Or you drowned your sorrows in pitchers of Coke or Root Beer after a loss. The location in Escondido is massive. The main dining room is humongous and they even have a nice video game room. The pizza is about on par with Pizza Hut quality and that's fine with most people, especially if you have young kids. And, of course, what visit to Shakey's is complete without some Mojo Potatoes? Basically, they are well-seasoned thick potato slices. I like them and there's also some added nostalgic value there. On the negative side, our food took forever to make which was a bit of a drag. Also, there were multiple uncleaned tables on a Saturday night that remained uncleaned during our entire visit. My guess is the restaurant was short-staffed (both front and back of house) which doesn't make a lot of sense on a busy Saturday night. They've got beer and a salad bar (now that's a real unicorn these days) and you can even get anchovies on your pizza (save your hate, they're good). They also have TVs everywhere so if there is sports being played somewhere, this is the place to watch it. I probably wouldn't return for the pizza and certainly not for the dirty tables. The Mojos are solid and if you have young children, are looking to catch a game, or if you want some decent nostalgia, it's worth a visit. Location is huge and lots of parking in the lot. Can get loud if there's a lot of kids. The food is just ok. It's not bad, but it's not great. The buffet is cheap so it's worth it if you have kids, since they have a game room attached to the restaurant. Service was good and friendly. They have beer so that's a plus. read more

I grew up on this , as my family is from LA, and was delighted to know there were Shakey's in Grossmont Plaza and Chula Vista as well, bith both of rhose closed. So Escondido it is! I called in my order which went very well. I told them I would be there in 15 mins, as I was driving in from Las Vegas. When I got there they confirmed my order and told me it would be about 5 mins more. I didn't mind the wait; I was just happy to get Shakey's and take it home to my kids. They love it too! It was really busy inside with a party going on. They also had their lunch buffet open with lots of yummy pizza and salad. I almost ordered a beer, but decided not to. Among the few remaining dine-in quick-serve pizza places, this is the best around. Got a pan crust combination with meats and veggies which was very good. The crust was tasty enough with a nice crisp on the cornicione and undercarriage, but I think I'd like their regular thin crust better. The sauce was very tasty and they apply the perfect amount, unlike many places where you can hardly taste it. Some complain there's not enough cheese, but I think it's just right. Just ask for extra if you're a big cheeshead. There are shakers at the tables with grated parmesan and red pepper flakes. The salad bar is about the best I've seen at such places, with two lettuce types plus spinach, and more fresh toppings and dressings than you need. It's great that they offer a one-trip option for only $6.89 to complement a meal. They also have a decent selection of beers on tap. For the $15 all-you-can-eat lunch, they add a variety of hot foods to the buffet like fried chicken, potatoes, pasta, garlic bread, meatballs, and of course pizza. It's a good deal compared to many other hot lunch options where you pay about the same at other non-fast food places for just a burger, chicken sandwich, or kabob wrap. Prices are reasonable, service was fast and friendly, it's very clean and spacious with a small arcade, and the excellent health score is icing on the cake. Came here for lunch before seeing a movie at the Regal Theaters. Decided to try their lunch buffet. I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant was kept up very well. It was very clean and the tables were stocked with Ketchup, Parmesan cheese, hot peppers, salt, and pepper. There were about 6 different pizzas to choose from and many other hot food choices including couple different chicken options and potatoes. The salad bar had a great selection of toppings. The server lady stopped by all the tables asking if we needed anything. The pizza was normal buffet pizza, not great but tasty. I must say the fried chicken was pretty good for buffet chicken. We traveled to Escondido from Oceanside just to have Shakey's buffet lunch. The food was delicious. I especially loved the bbq meatballs, chicken, salad and about 7 assorted pizzas(and bread). It definitely did not disappoint us. The employees were very friendly and helpful. Especially Jasmine, she made sure our visit was the best possible. I had a mediocre experience, but I'll still give 4/5 for the good service. I want to think this was the Shakey's I went to as a kid, but I'm an old man and times have changed. I had the pizza here about a year ago and it was okay, no issues, but nothing to write home about. Last week I stopped in with a relative and we both had the chicken sandwiches. Wow... I should have eaten the cardboard tray instead of the food. When we ordered them we were asked "Mayo and pickle?" No, those sound gross. Why ruin a chicken sandwich with that? What is this, a middle school cafeteria? No thank you, we passed. When the sandwiches were delivered it was just a bun and a dry piece of fried chicken. Okay, so I get it now. The only way to make these palatable was be adding something. Something? Yes, please add something. Mayo and pickle? Eeew. The funny thing is, this is a pizza place and a pizza place should have a pretty good selection of sauces. Even if they don't have a selection, surely there's some kind of BBQ sauce or pizza sauce back there, right? The business was clean, the staff was friendly and that deserves a 4/5 right there. Would I return? Sure. .....I'm not ordering that chicken sandwich again, that's for sure. They had a few more chicken based items on the menu and at this point I'm kind of doubtful about any of them being done well. Shakey's has always been a nostalgic spot for me--growing up, it was a go-to favorite. Even though this location is far from where we live, I've already made the trip 3-4 times because the food brings back memories. I've dined in twice, and while I don't expect perfection, I do expect basic professionalism. Unfortunately, tonight's experience was disappointing. While placing my order at the counter, the staff member helping me abruptly stopped halfway through and passed me off to someone else without explanation--only for me to immediately see him head off to what looked like a snack break. If you're not available or about to take a break, don't start taking an order. It felt careless and unprofessional, especially if he holds a leadership role (he might even be a manager). That said, there are still some great team members here who are kind and helpful, and I appreciate them. I'll probably be back--mostly because my mom loves this place--but I'll definitely be managing expectations when it comes to service. I really hope things improve moving forward. read more

After seeing so many positive reviews on Yelp, I finally got to try Shakeys Pizza located in Escondido, CA, but it failed me in many ways. Generally, I'm not a picky eater, but the food here reminds me of below-average school cafeteria quality. Heck, even I think the school cafeteria has better foods than here back in the older days. The good 4/5 Fried chicken and Mojos potatoes were good. Good selections, on point Pepsi fountain beverages. Plenty of parking; inside was spacious and semi-clean. The bad 1/5 Almost $20 for lunch with a drink all you can eat with limited selections and subpar quality and foods. I recommend going to any Chinese buffet or any Paradise Buffet location; you can thank me later. Baked chicken was extremely salty. The pepperoni pizza twist was so hard and dry it wasn't eatable except for the pepperoni itself. Croutons were stale and soft. Salad doesn't seem that fresh. The gravy doesn't look appetizing like a big globe of crapola. Pizza wasn't good nor bad; I had much better at Paradise Buffet. Service was mediocre, like the food itself. I was working on my two plates that had a good amount of food still, and the cashier/busser said, Am I done eating? Can he take those away?". SMH I'm not sure if any type of desert was offered with the lunch buffet. I figured the food would taste decent if I went early for their lunch buffet; I was wrong. Shakeys is a great place for a fun family night. I was surprised at how many games they had in their arcade. My kids were so excited. The one disappointment though was that not all were working properly. We had to call management over several times when the machines scanned the cards and didn't work. It was a disappointment for sure. The potatoes were great and the pizza was good, but not the style I typically go for. But not bad. I live in Orange County and have been to a bunch of the few existing Shakes Pizzas Parlors around, especially the ones in Santa Ana, and this one by far blows all of them out the water. Place is very nicely kept and modern with plenty of tables. Food was hot and fresh. When something ran out, they brought out another batch quite quickly. The only thing I ever saw out was those little mini cinnamon bites. They offered both deep dish and thin crust pizza. The chicken Alfredo and bbq chicken were tasty. Both fried and marinated chicken was good. Spaghetti noodles weren't dripping wet, spaghetti sauce was think and not watery. Mashed potatoes was thick and not watery like other locations. Overall, my family of 16 had plenty of seating and everyone thoroughly enjoyed lunch. I highly recommend this place and we will return when we are back in the Escondido area. read more

My family and I have been here for a while and now have a been a fan of shakey's! This was our third visit here and all with great experiences. We usually get a pepperoni, hawaiian and onion pizza, with some regular pepperoni ones and never have had a bad pizza made. The pizzas are super tasty along with a crunchy crust and nicely cooked toppings. The process is going to and ordering then finding a seat with your number, they will bring you your food! Their beers are picked up at the bar either canned or drafted. They have cheese and peppers at their table and can fit two large pizzas on their stand. The whole restaurant is super huge with a lot of spaces to go sit. There is an arcade room where kids can go play some games. It is not free.
