When you get a call no parent should ever receive -- the call that your child is gone -- your world shatters and you don't even know where to begin. I got that call on a Monday, and on top of the heartbreak, another complication hit: my son had passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After calling multiple funeral homes in Albuquerque and gathering prices, I started calling funeral homes in Amarillo. The moment I spoke with Candice at Shafer Mortuary, everything changed. She gave us the chance to have a short, meaningful viewing with him before cremation. She handled every single detail, start to finish, with compassion, professionalism, and genuine care. What amazed me even more is that she charged us the same amount as if we had done everything in Albuquerque -- no extra fees, no surprises, just kindness. I wanted to wait to review this company until time had passed so that I didn't post from emotions but what actually took place.  My son passed away in Amarillo, TX and I was told Shafter Mortuary was in charge of his remains.  I called them to get an update of what would be happening because I had never walked this path before. 1.  I had told them I did not want his clothes sent to me as he was found many days after his death.  Two days later I received a box with his clothes in it. . .wet and extremely musty with mold on the clothes. . .the smell was horrid.  It was like a mix of dirt, mold and embalming fluid. 2.  I had asked for a lock of his hair. . .I have a lock of hair from all my kids first haircut and wanted to have a lock of his hair after his passing.  This never happened. 3.  I was told that the shipping for his cremains would cost $75.00. . .which I paid but later found out that the actual shipping was $56.00. 4.  I had asked that when his cremains were sent home to me that the package would be marked "signature required", which I believe is a standard for shipping cremains.  This did not happen either. . .the postal employee just dropped the box, containing my sons ashes, on my front porch, in the drizzling rain and didn't let me know they had been delivered.  Fast forward 4 hours, the box was soaked through.  There was no respect for my son from either the mortuary or postal service.  What would have happened if someone grabbed the box and then found out what it was and decided to just throw it away ?  I would never have my sons remains back with me.  Total disrespect from both the mortuary and postal service. 5.  I wasn't kept informed how long it would take before my son's remains went through cremation.  When I would  call, I would get short and cold answers.  I was keeping in contact with the Justice of the Peace in Amarillo and found out that the autopsy was completed.  I called the mortuary but they said they hadn't received the paperwork from the judge.  I then called the judges office personally and the secretary told me she would call me back in 20 minutes.  She kept to her word and told me that the paperwork was faxed to the mortuary many days before and the judge herself told the mortuary to take care of this situation immediately. This whole situation was a nightmare I hope no one ever has to go through.  Never should a family have to keep calling to find out the status of their loved one.  Never should have situations like I have listed above happen to a family that is dealing with the death of a loved one.  Had the employee of the mortuary cared and took the time to listen to my requests, I would have never had to go through such heartbreak.  This mortuary definitely let this family down, caused extreme emotional stress (imagine, finding your loved ones cremains sitting on your front porch in the rain. . .box totally soaked and open to someone stealing it) and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.  At the very least, I hope they learn from their mistakes in handling my son's remains. read more
