Went to Shabumi for Korean BBQ and it was honestly one of the best AYCE experiences I've had. The meat quality was really good and everything came out fresh and well-marinated. The brisket and bulgogi were definitely my favorites. The grill was changed frequently and the staff was very attentive, which made the whole experience smooth. The restaurant itself is clean, modern, and has a really nice atmosphere. It didn't feel too crowded and the ventilation was good so you don't leave smelling like smoke. The side dishes and sauces also complemented the meat really well. Overall, great food, great service, and a fun place to go with friends or for a date. I'll definitely be coming back again

Came here on a Tuesday night and was seated right away. You get your choice of ayce hotpot or kbbq. Not everyone has to choose the same thing but it does decide the the top of stovetop you get so, if you're craving both. Be sure you're with people who is willing to share!. There is a buffet of the sides, the only thing was because with wasn't busy I felt some of the hot sides were cold and the rice paper was hard, so was disappointed about that. However, decent selection of meat and very attentive service. I guess I could have asked for fresh rice paper. Would be willing to try again if other ppl have wanted to try.

This was my first time here. This is a great place for a mix of Hot Pot and Korean BBQ. This allowed you to share choices with friends and family. There is also a choose for little kids. If you have a little one that does not eat a lot. They charge $2.50 times their age. There is a great selection at the two bars. For veggies, seafood, some red meats, and fermented veggies. The service is vast and polite. Someone is always checking on you. The ambiance is your typical Korean restaurant. The only con, would be the smoke flow from the grill plates. Since the had the front door open and the AC on. The smoke would get into our faces on occasion. I will come back to do a review on the Hot Pot itself.

3.5 stars Called a few days ahead to make reservations for an early Sunday evening. The price was $41.99 per person for either AYCE hot pot or KBBQ (dinner/all-day weekend pricing). Surprisingly, the restaurant was never fully packed during our visit. Service was attentive when ordering meats, and items came out quickly. Each person gets their own individual warmer for either hot pot or KBBQ. You are allowed to mix and match within the table which was great for sharing. There's a self-service bar for hot pot with seafood, vegetables, noodles, plus a separate sauce bar and an appetizer bar offering items like japchae, fried rice, oranges, and fish cake. That said, the sauce bar was a bit messy - bottles were sticky and the hot food/appetizer area didn't look very appetizing and was cold, so I skipped those and stuck mainly to meats and veggies. The restaurant is located in a large plaza with Vons and CVS - no issues with parking.

Went here for a team lunch and a party of 4. Got here when they opened at noon and before you know it.. the lunch crowd came. First time here and the service was on point. You have the option of hot pot or KBBQ. The best part is, two of us got hot pot and the other two KBBQ. Order and share all around. Its great that we all DIDN'T have to order one OR the other. The KBBQ and the hot pot station were individual sizes so it was nice that you can only cook so much food at one time and not have to cook 3 orders on the one huge tradition grill. The buffet section had great options and the sauce section had different type of space mixes. All things meat marinade was fantastic. While.other meats will need some sauce dipping. Great time

I love how your whole party doesn't have to choose shabu vs kbbq but everyone gets their own individual bowl/grill. Soo smart!! Service was awesome with very friendly and attentive workers. The self-serve bar was filled with fresh and tasty ingredients. I especially liked the japchae and marinated fish cake. Some of the labels were incorrect, but it was easy to figure out if you knew the items already. Funny enough, my entire party didn't notice the sauces bar behind as we were distracted with getting our fill from the bar. I got the Miso broth shabu. It was pretty bland before any additions. My party said the same thing about the other broths they had. I tried a variety of meats with Prime Top Blade as my #1 and Black Angus Eye of Round as my #2. I actually wasn't impressed by any of the other meats I tried. The quality of meat overall was mostly average. I really wish they had more variety especially for the price. Besides that, I was very happy with my visit and would come again!

Stopped in for lunch and enjoyed an early bird pricing (until 3pm) I was greeted by friendly young staff and a clean restaurant. The dining room is spacious and well layed out. You can choose from different brothe and a basic or premium meat selection. I was happy to enjoy the basic option with house broth. The best part of Shabumi is the self serve cold bar which offers not only noodles and veggies, but also a full spread of Banchan ( Korean BBQ sides) This is the first shabu shabu restaurant Ive been to that had the all Korean BBQ sides that I love. The fish cakes, the sauces, seafood. I wouldn't settle for a regular shabu place that does not offer this, from now on. I was macking so hard, they offered me a stylish bib. It was black and disposable. Since I was returning to work, I appreciated it. Just writing this review makes my mouth water. Don't hesitate to eat here, you won't regret it.

First time trying hot pot and I am IN LOVE. The food was fantastic!!!! so flavorful so good, you can change your level of spiciness. You can add more seasonings if you want to. There is so many options. It's buffet style so you grab your food and you bring it back to your table. The only thing they bring you is your drinks and your meats. You're allowed to order three meats at a time. The service was excellent. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. The ambience was cute. It had like a Korean barbecue feel which you can also have Korean barbecue if you want to or hot pot. I really like that concept because sometimes family members don't want to have hot pot but some want to have Korean barbecue and everyone has their own grill. I love the whole concept. Just keep in mind. The price is higher on weekends and on holidays. It is a set rate because it's all you can eat. Come hungry!! I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

This is my go to hotpot spot and it never disappoints! The servers are always friendly, attentive, and make the whole experience even better. I've been coming here for years and the quality has stayed consistently amazing. Food: Super yummy Atmosphere: Perfect for hanging out Parking: Easy and convenient Definitely one of my favorite comfort spot highly recommend! **** Ahjumma there is very sweet. I forgot to ask for her name.

My friend and I came here on a Monday and there was barely anybody there. We got hot pot and ordered meat right away. While we waited, we went to the self serve bar to get noodles, vegetables, sauce, etc. My fire kept going off so that was annoying. Service was good. About $50 after tax & tip which is expensive.

pretty good spot! i liked how you can choose between AYCE hotpot and kbbq. they have lots of vegis for hotpot and a sauce bar. they also have plenty of side dishes but i'd say side dishes and rice are okay. you can ask the staff to change the grill with a button. parking is not too bad for weekday dinner!

This is my 2nd time here. The 1st time was a whole different experience since it was during Covid. So I'm basing it off this experience which was pretty good. The waiter was really nice and attentive. They have an all day HH for drinks 50% off which is pretty cool. They have the option of either hot pot or kbbq for $40/person for dinner which I think is pretty steep compared to OC or other nearby spots. I say pretty steep because the flavorings/options could be better for that price. My party of 3 did a combination of hot pot and kbbq. There was a small selection of meats for kbbq and an even smaller selection of meats for hot pot that you had to order with a waiter. Everything else such as seafood, vegetables, noodles, or condiments were out in an open self serve bar. I got the house special broth and it was pretty plain but no worries I just used condiments from the bar to spruce it up and it tasted just fine. We only did 1 round of meats and getting up for the bar before getting full. Pretty fun concept to have the best of both worlds.

Do we need to make reservations for 10 people?

As far as I know, they do not take reservations. You show up, put your name on the list (notebook outside by the door) and they’ll call in order. They will not seat you if your entire group isn’t there

How long is the dinner wait?

    Not too long.

Are your sukiyaki and miso broths made from pork base or beef base broth?

Is the seafood section available for lunch or is that dinner only?

I've there for lunch on two occasions and it's been available both times!

For your vegan options broth? Is there onion or garlic in the broth? Please let me know! Thanks!

There is tomato base soup and a dried kelp broth base which is their house base.

If my bf gets ayce bbq and I get ayce soup are we allowed to share?

My sister and her fiancé do that all the time, and they haven't had any issues.

Did they close down for good? We've been trying to call and no one picks up. Or maybe their hours are wrong?

They just reopened, dining inside as well as take- out. Since they're on limited seating, it'd probably be a good idea to call first. :)

Is the bbq menu the same price as the shabu shabu menu? Can you only pick one from the options or can you do both the bbq and the shabu shabu soup?

How does the BBQMi work? Is it AYCE?

Kind of like regular ayce kbbq. You get a list of meats you can choose from, unlimited sides..they have rice, rice paper, or radish slices. The only difference is you get your own individual grill! Pretty awesome, in my opinion.

It looks like BBQmi is relatively new, how does it work? Do you now have access to both BBQ and Hot Pot? Or do you have to choose? Also can a single prtt have BBQ and Hot Pot at the same table?

Yes. We do have hot pot and BBQ. Also BBQ is individual too just like individual hot pot.

Are they open on Christmas Eve?

    Yes

Are the japchae, yakisoba, fried rice vegetarian?? What salad bar options are there for vegetarian eaters?

    Plenty of veggies

    When is last call usually?

    30 minutes before they close!

Do they bring out the meat you order or is everything out in the buffet?

The seafood is kept out in the Buffet with all the veggies and seasonings/sauces.. the meat is brought out to you from the kitchen, 2 servings at a time, AYCE.

I hAve a party for 12 this Saturday can we be accommodated?

Yes. Please call us make ur reservation.

It was fairly oily though so I had to press out some of that oil using paper towels. Spicy chicken entree item was really nice. Not too spicy and it also had some veggies in there which I appreciate. Sauce itself was delicious and I think the only downside is that there was not as many large pieces of chicken so it was hard to tell what was chicken and what was rice cakes. Friend and husband definitely enjoyed the beef bulgogi. I only tasted a little and it was definitely good. I was really excited about the Hot Stone Bibimbap, but it didn't deliver as much. First off, there is free parking available, just circle around the building until you see a garage entrance for retail parking. Two hours for free! Let me first explain the aesthetics of this place. Clean and modern with mid century feel accented with greenery throughout. Please note that they won't seat you until most of your party is present. We came here for Happy Hour which was from 4-6pm from Tuesday to Sunday! This is fantastic that HH includes the weekend!!!! To start, got a wellness shot which had a meld of juices and ginger. A great drink to ready your palate. For cocktails, I tried the Suika Spritz, which was refreshing! The Absolutely Pho-nomenal definitely tasted like cold Pho broth but spiked. It wasn't my favorite drink, but glad I tried it nonetheless. Of course we ordered the $1 oysters, and ordered all three - Baja, Pacific Northwest, & East Coast. It came with some Asian fusion sauces to dress our oysters. My fave was the Baja as these were the freshest! All three were smooth and non briny. On the HH menu we also tried - Bulgogi Birria Vampiro - Tender meat with bulgogi seasoned beef on top of a tostada. Really liked the meld of the two cultures in this dish. Duck Liver Mousse - Comes with rustic bread & crème fraiche. Very duck forward. I liked this because it was rich with flavor. Stone Crab Taco - Loved the nod to Loganisa in this taco! This was by far, my favorite protein dish on the HH menu!!!! Regular Menu - Mango Nasturium Kimchi Salad - I absolutely loved this vibrant and fresh dish!!!! I had to go back for second and thirds! Shishito Peppers with Bonito Flakes - This was definitely a fun and flavorful dish with lots of umami. Dessert - Hotteok and Vanilla Ice Cream - this was my favorite dessert! The pancakes were flaky and delicious!! Bonbunja Tiramisu - Beware! This has a strong coffee taste. It reminded of the strength and flavor profile of a Vietnamese coffee. I can't believe it's not cheesecake - Definitely a mix of a brûlée but with a cheesecake flavor. Confusing but works lol. We met the executive chef, Kyler, who explained and served some of dishes we ordered. The entire staff was so accommodating and even reminded us if we needed our parking validated! Our water never ran empty and our dishes were promptly taken away as we finished. Definitely a place to visit during HH since they offer amazing food and cocktail choices.

Food: We got several appetizers and 3 entrees. We had the Mango Kimchi Salad, Bulgogi Birria Vampiro, Silkworm Pupa Tacos, Doenjang Risotto, Miso Lingcod, and Braised Short Rib. We got plenty of dishes to try, but unfortunately they were either simply mediocre or had an issue. The Kimchi Salad was too strong in spice and the mangos were unripe and hard. The Birria Vampiro was simply mediocre and sort of bland. Silkworm Pupa Tacos were again sort of bland. The Risotto was undercooked and crunchy instead of 'al dente'. Miso Lingcod had a very fishy taste and not much else. And the Braised Short Rib was too salty. Drinks: I got the Choi's cocktail and my wife got the Gangnam Style espresso martini. Both drinks were very well made and tasted great! Service: Unlike the food, the service was great! From the person who confirmed our reservation, to the staff at the front of the door, and to our server, they were all extremely friendly. We were celebrating an occasion, which we made known when booking and upon sitting down we got a handwritten card with a congratulations note. That was very unexpected and awesome! We also got a couple of complimentary cocktail shots from the bartender while we were there. Overall, I would say the staff and service was extremely good. Parking: The area of San Diego that Choi's is located is unfortunately very bad. Overfilled with homeless, drug addicts, and just plain shady looking people who roam the streets. I was overjoyed when I found out that they give you two hours of complimentary parking in a safe place! So to summarize: The staff that provide great service, the bartender with awesome drinks, and the free parking in a safe place simply do not make up for the main reason we were there: the food. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars instead of 1 was because of all these other factors besides the food. Before paying the bill and leaving, we did let the server know about the issues we found with the food in a very friendly and constructive way. She was thankful for the honesty and the feedback.

I'd recommend parking near Ole BBQ or closer to the UTC area because that lot is much easier to navigate. There's also free street parking, which is a plus. This place doesn't take reservations or allow you to join the waitlist over the phone, so you'll need to go in person to put your name down. They'll text you when your table is ready, so you can walk around while you wait. My party of six waited about 45 minutes, but it honestly went by faster than expected. Once seated, they have a newer system where you order your meats and sides through a tablet, which made things super convenient. The service was solid, staff were friendly, attentive, and quick to clear empty plates. The quality of the meat was really good. I highly recommend the beef belly, and the corn cheese was a standout for me--I had like three plates of it because it was that good. Our group had a great time overall. They also offer free ice cream (chocolate, vanilla, and green tea) for all guests, which was a nice touch. The restaurant itself is clean, including the bathrooms, and the ambiance is great. Just be prepared, you will smell like Korean BBQ afterward. Overall, I'd definitely recommend stopping by!
