Came in with my partner for my birthday and had such a good experience here. They had a free birthday meal promo and all I had to do was show my ID as proof which was super easy. We got the tomato and suki broth base and both were really good . The meats were good too, although the options were a little more limited since we came during lunch time, but it was still very affordable for the price of all u can eat. Our server Suki was super friendly, attentive, and made sure we were taken care of the whole time. I've been to Shabu-Works a handful of times now, and it's usually a solid experience. Out of all the soup bases I've tried (sukiyaki, Sichuan ma-la, spicy Mongolian, spicy miso, and tomato harvest), the sukiyaki is still my favorite. It's well balanced, and I like how it complements the meats well. I also appreciate the wide selection of hot pot ingredients, plus the added bonus of a prepared hot food section. The drink options are great too, especially the milk tea, and the self-serve shave ice bar with toppings is a fun touch that rounds out the meal. With that being said, the meat quality can be a bit inconsistent depending on what you're served. On my most recent visit, the first two rounds were great. We received good quality US wagyu chuck tender, angus beef belly, and top blade. But by round three, the wagyu chuck tender was about 80% fat. We asked for a different plate, but unfortunately the replacement had the same issue. I feel that the meat quality should remain consistent across rounds, and not be so drastically different. Service-wise, things were slower this time around as well, especially when it came to clearing dishes. Overall, I'm still giving 4 stars because of the positive experiences I've had in the past, but there's definitely room for improvement in consistency and service. read more

SHABU-WORKS is an AYCE shabu restaurant that features a wide variety of meats, veggies, and more. There is plenty of parking and the place is kid friendly (with the added bonus of kid pricing)! The meat quality is very good and our favorite is the Cab Top Blade. One of my favorite things about this place is the hot food bar. The chicken teriyaki and chicken katsu are very good. Drinks are included with the price and there is a Coca-Cola Freestyle machine along with an assortment of pre-made teas. The mango green tea is the standout and good enough to be found at a boba shop. An awesome final touch is the shaved ice bar which is the perfect accompaniment to end the meal. Shabu ANYTIME, ANY DAY! My family and I often visit here. Embarrassing to say, we go here at least once/twice a week. It's convenient and I don't have to deal with any cooking and cleaning. You can say it's one of our favorite places to eat. Customer service is always superb and the meats are tasty with many selections to choose from. Our favorite manager is Suki . She always has a warm smile on her face everytime we come as well as her fellow managers and co-workers. They always greets us with the warmest smile when we come. Came here on a weekend with a group of friends, but unfortunately the experience wasn't the best. When we first arrived, there wasn't anyone at the front to check us in, so we had to wait a while just to get someone's attention. Once we were seated though, the staff did check on us regularly, which I appreciated. The vegetables didn't seem very fresh, especially the spinach, which was disappointing. I also wish they would lower the price for the vegetarian option, especially since the meat items are ordered separately and brought to the table. On the positive side, the tomato and mushroom broth was good, and the shaved ice toppings station was a nice touch. The most amazing shabu experience while we were in San Diego! We usually go to spots around Orange County, but this one really stood out. I had such a good time! the flavors, the setup, the whole vibe at Shabu Works were just it. I loved the food, but I have mixed feelings about my dining experience, and I'll tell you exactly why. I came by on a Monday, 8PM and BOY was it packed (Note, restaurant closes at 9). There were parties left and right, a good number of tables were filled. I was seated super fast and my order came out I wanna say in less than 10 minutes of me being seated. There's a sauce bar, open drink machines, a bar for veggies, noodles, seafoods, fried foods, and even a shaved ice area. I stood up to wander around the bars to get my stuff and when I sat down, the soup and meats were already there. My server and his customer service, phenomenal. The right side was the Sichuan Mala soup and the left was the Mongolian (Server recommended). Both were so incredibly tasty, I really wanted to drink the entire pot if I could LOL. I was checked in on regularly by him and other staff who were clearing the other tables so that part was great. In addition, there was such a wide variety of seafood and veggie options, this restaurant could cater to so many different palates. So, why the -1 Star, you might ask? Around 8:40PM (I remember it was earlier since I was even surprised that the cleanup was so soon but I'll say 8:40PM), there was this ear piercing clash of utensils. And it wasn't one. It was back to back to back slamming of tongs. **Disclaimer** I know this restaurant isn't a super high end, fancy restaurant, so I didn't expect the staff to have that level of training, but this was so loud and aggressive that the tables near me also looked to see what the deal was. It was one of the kitchen ladies cleaning up the bar area. I watched her carry a bin down the line of the bar, just aggressively slamming the tongs into the bin. It was so loud and disruptive and the bars are dang long so it kept going on and on AND THEN SHE LOOPED BACK THE OTHER WAY AND KEPT SLAMMING LMAO. I finished my meal soon after and then paid and dipped (before 9). Though the meal was super good and I really liked all the options there, the lady beating up the utensils got me good. LMAO Might come back but definitely earlier than 8 next time, or at least will bring earplugs. Food: Broths: Garlic Miso Tonkotsu (6/10) - It's slightly creamy and you can definitely taste the miso. It's not too salty or garlicky. It didn't really stand out but was still decent. Definitely feels like the "comfort" choice. The Mongolian (8/10) - I love the spicy kick to this broth without it being too strong. It has a lot of flavor to it and made everything I dipped into it yummy. Loved drinking the broth too. The meat and toppings here are solid. Thin-sliced beef and pork are the best to me. Seafood like shrimp and squid is a nice addition and the fish balls and krab are standard but do the job. The veggie bar has the basics you want: napa, spinach, mushrooms, corn, plus filling noodles. Sauce bar is simple but effective (sesame, garlic, green onion, soy, chili oil, etc.) easy to make something good. I also loved the shaved ice bar for dessert! Unique and fun. Came here for their military mondays for lunch to try it out for the first time. SO many different veggies, seafood options, and delicious broths and meats. We ordered the sukiyaki and the garlic miso tonkotsu which were both very flavorful and delicious. Some shabu shabu places we've been to have had pretty watered down, flavorless broths but not here. Our favorite of the meats from the cheaper menu was for sure the beef belly. It had plenty of meat and just enough fat to balance it out. Love the mushroom selection and the huge pieces of tofu. Always love coming to Shabu-Works even though it's out of the way for me. Took a big group of my friends here to introduce a lot of them to hot pot for the first time. They all had nothing but good things to say and were excited by the selection and how delicious the food was. The broth options are amazing, and the crowd favorite was the garlic miso. The Mongolian's pretty good too, but it does get a little tiring getting your tongue numbed by the peppercorns over time. I also love the tom yum but that's my general go-to for hot pot, and I wouldn't say it's where Shabu-works specializes. The bars are really where Shabu-Works shines, compared to other spots. There are so many options! You serve your own sauces, veggies, seafood, sides, and there's even a delicious hot food bar with chicken, rice, curry, dumplings, all of which are good, but you have to be careful not to fill up on it! There's also a drink bar included and a dessert bar where you can make your own shaved ice. My personal favorite is the wintermelon tea (probably because it just tastes like brown sugar water haha). Overall, I'd say Shabu-works is my favorite AYCE hot pot in the SD area, with the best quality to value. read more

The quality of the meat is AAA+! Been to lots of shabu style restaurants but haven't seen this level of quality before. Wide variety of veggies, seafood and noodles available. The veggies are always fresh and clean. The meat selection is not overly overwhelming and they seem to be fresh as well. We have not had any bad batches and they are very light and not too fatty. If you have children that don't do hot pot, they also have some hot food options. Their drink station is great with not only the soda machine but some sweet flavored tea options. The dipping sauce station is pretty big as well. From all of their soup bases we tried, we love their sukiyaki soup. They have eggs available if you want to add the raw egg in your dipping sauce which goes well with the sukiyaki soup. They recently got an updated ice machine for their shaved ice dessert station. A refreshing end to a wonderful Shabu Shabu. Came here on a weekend for lunch with my girlfriend and we enjoyed pretty much everything. The broth (seschuan mala and umami mushroom) were the ones we picked and they were delicious. We ordered different cuts of beef and tried the lamb slices as well. In my opinion, the leaner cuts of beef cook better than the fatty cuts. They have everything you needed to have a great hot pot. Seafood, veggies, and a sauce bar filled with different spices and flavors. As far as service goes, I really have no complaints. Our waitress was very nice and checked up on us every time she saw our meat was running low. This restaurant is pretty big so you can come with a big party or if you're flying solo they have bar seating near the back. They have a bunch of deals such as: Happy hour, free birthday meals, military discounts, ect. For dessert, they have a shave ice bar with various toppings. We came here for my wife's birthday because you get to eat free on your birthday if you pay for one additional guest. We were seated right away and the staff was friendly and attentive. Our meat orders came out in a reasonable amount of time and the staff checked on us often. Dinner has 3 additional beef meat options compared to lunch and is totally worth the price difference since the meat was more tender. If you sign up for their membership, you get a small discount. Overall, the meat was tender and fresh. The most popular broth was really tasty and we like the variety of food. The hot foods were out for too long so everything was dry. Best Shabu Shabu in San Diego! Lunch special was great - so many options to choose from in the hot bar and ingredients for your concoction. Sukiyaki broth (It's like a sweet version of miso soup) is goated and goes well with any beef! I opted for the less-fatty beef options -Angus Chuck Eye -Premium Eye Round Although I enjoyed both, there was a lighter, more tender meat that I really liked (the other was darker/more chewy/gamey). I am not knowledgeable enough about beef to know which of these two that I liked - but whatever it was, I'd definitely want more of that next time rather than getting both. Only could last one round of meat though cause the rest of the food was so great. Tip: you can turn off the heat for the hot pot on the panel to the side of the table. The Fried rice was amazing, especially with negi (green onions), you can always get more in the sauce bar! Sauce bar winning combo: Sesame sauce+Crushed sesame! You dip the beef in it to cool it down. Hokkaido milk tea + ice = heaven. Hot take: Ramen noodles are fresh, the freshest and best I've ever had in my life, better than any ramen restaurant in San Diego or Japan for that matter. This place wins so hard it's crazy. I had forgotten that food could be this good. Soft drinks and dessert are included in the price - no hidden fees like other places that up charge you for little things like this. This place is kept very clean too! Free mango tea at the entrance was light and refreshing, just don't fill up too much on it as you need to make room for everything else lol. Oh, and if you already aren't full with this, there's dessert included too - popping boba, mochi, shaved ice, and an assortment of fruits.
