About the worst news you can receive as a homeowner is that you have failed siding that needs replacing, because it's not just the siding, it's what is underneath that has to be addressed. Two side of our house needed siding replaced due to construction flaws and water intrusion. We chose SFW Construction based on their Angies List recommendations. The workers were very skilled, they knew exactly what they needed to do, explained everything to us every step of the way. This is painful work for a homeowner: it is slow, noisy, invasive, and very very expensive. It took over three weeks to do two sides of our tall skinny house, and we spent about 10% of the purchase price of the house on the repairs. Painful, as I said. Very happy with the work and the people who did the work. 5 stars for that. I took one star off because they recommended SFW Painting to paint our house, and if you read my review of that company, doubt may creep into your mind as to whether you should do business with SFW. I can say that SFW Construction did a good job, and they were very good people to work with. read more

During a roof replacement, dry rot was identified in two second-story dormer window sills (~25-30 ft up, difficult access). I contacted SFW Company, which sent a representative who proposed accessing the area via the roof using boards already in place from the roofing crew. He and I spoke directly with the roofers and asked them to leave those boards in place for that purpose. I agreed to that plan. The next day, that approach was changed on-site by a supervisor without prior discussion. This raises a basic question: why send someone to evaluate the job who does not have the authority or knowledge to accurately define the work plan and access? Instead, three workers (billed at $125/hour each) spent essentially the entire day setting up two ladders with a plank between them, including fastening into my newly installed shingles. The total came to $3,000 for the day just for the labor, with very limited actual repair work completed (partial shingle removal on one dormer). The company also charges for worker break times, stating in writing that their 2 breaks must be paid by home owner due to "Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)." As a homeowner, I found this unusual--I have not previously been billed for contractor break time. Additionally, while lead paint procedures were initiated (notice on the home entry and paperwork), the containment method discussed was not implemented. Overall, this hourly model--combined with a last-minute change in approach--while lucrative for SFW is not economical for the homeowner and does not incentivize efficiency. Spending a full day on ladder setup with minimal progress was difficult to justify. I discontinued the project after the first day (additional $1781.25 charged to remove the set up!--3 men at $125 per hour ($375 per hour) adds up quickly). read more

Had then out to replace to runs of siding. The quality was fine, but be prepared to spend more than you planned. I was told the job would take a couple of hours for 2 guys at $125/ hour + materials. OK - I figured $550 - $600, which I thought was high for the job, but I wanted it done and didn't feel like spending time on other bids for a small job. They showed up on time at 7:00 am. One guy dropped off a trailer and left. Then I filled out a ton of paperwork. I was then told they didn't have the material. What the heck, you come out to replace siding with no siding? While someone when to Parr lumber, the other two started removing the old boards, It was mostly a one person job, but whatever. Boards arrived and the two guys finished the job. It took 3 hours, vs 2 that I expected. So I guessed my bill would be even bit higher. What I didn't know is I was paying the third guy to drop off the trailer, go to the store, pick up the trailer (the next day) and go to the dump. My bill was about 40% higher than I expected all together. They do quality work, just go in knowing you will likely be paying more than you anticipated. read more

Scope of Work that was done: New siding on the entire south wall of our 1890s Victorian; install insulation; new fascia/window trim; repair drip edge around the house; repair painted-over original windows and make them operable again; remove old gutters (Not part of construction scope but also happened: paint the whole house + new gutters). Given the scope of this work, this project required a lot of coordination and attention to detail. I am SO glad I chose Jay from SFW. From the first day of meeting Jay (project manager), the quote we received was reasonable, all communication was prompt and efficient, and that's not even getting to the actual crew that performed the work. People, ASK FOR GREG! He was a consummate professional. There is literally nothing else I could say. He was extremely efficient, on time (which is important when you're getting billed by the hour!), and performed work that actually saved me money--any other guy could have easily done things the long way, Greg was no-nonsense. In 1 day he (and his guy) demoed the entire wall, and in 2 days I had new siding on my house (Total was 4 days to do the fascia/trimwork and other smaller items; see pictures). I could kiss his hands at the expert, efficient, and professional way this man treated my house. Also, Jay was extremely prompt and communicative, came out to the site the first day to ensure a good start, and after the construction phase, he handled all the coordination of paint preppers, painters, and gutter guys. OVERALL, for a project this size, we were glad that we only were 1-2K over budget. BUT, SFW also didn't nickel-and-dime us, and ate some costs when paint prep took a little longer than needed. That built a lot of trust and confidence. So, overall rating = Amazing. I don't think I ever felt so glad handing over this much money to a company, but I am so glad I went with SFW. This could have been a nightmare but was a dream--Jay is my guy now, and I'll be contacting them to re-do our porch in about a year from now. TLDR: The pictures speak for themselves. read more

DO NOT HIRE! In 2023, I successfully used SFW Construction for a small repair in Portland. I received an estimate, had the repair completed successfully and at the estimated price. I subsequently hired them in 2025 for a repair on the Coast. They refused to give an estimate because they said they don't do them and it's too hard to estimate until you have looked underneath the siding, etc. I trusted them from their previous work and made a huge mistake. They billed daily for their work, with no estimate, required me to pay daily, charged credit card fees and yet had no way to pay online by card. So I had to try to call as often as possible to pay by credit card. In the end they charged me almost $50,000 for the repair. Once they had the side of the house basically open to the elements, I was stuck. I feel completely scammed by these people and would never hire them again. I also caught mistakes in their billing. We had several remodeling projects we needed a contractor for. I called SFW for a quote for a siding project and the project coordinator didn't even want to talk about ithe project until I approved/agreed to 24 pages of their rules, regulations, fees, as well as Oregon contractor board information etc he emailed me. Most of the information he sent me did not even pertain to my type of project but he expected me to approve it anyway? The email stated that he wanted to do the work on an hourly basis with an open ended $78 per man with no notation of how many men they planned to use. Also a 20% markup on all materials. He didn't want to see the project ahead of time and the email said they would just show up with a "Construction trailer" and start the work. The sky's the limit on pricing apparently. I don't know if he thought I was stupid or what. No cap on the pricing or anything. They could come out and work as slow as they want for big $. Their workers are very friendly and polite. They kept me informed of their findings and their plan to repair the siding. Over the years I've dealt with several different contractors and it's never been great; in fact, most experiences have been pretty bad. But SFW Construction will be the ONLY place I call from now on because they made the best of an awful situation. We bought our home a year ago and over the winter discovered the windows leak. The sellers didn't disclose the leaks, and the water damage was extensive. There was rot from the window frames all the way down into the structural beams. The guys at SFW explained the exact process of leak detection and rot repair before sending the crew out. The project manager, Eric, was very warm, courteous, and honest. I hired SFW to replace a set of French doors that had been leaking rainwater into my hardwood floors. I felt a little apprehensive about their hourly billing, but knew it was fair since we couldn't see how far the damage went. Jerry came out to take a look and eased my fears with his expertise and explanation of their door replacement and extensive waterproofing process. He also got me a great deal on the custom doors I wanted. When it came time to do the work, Angel and his crew were impeccably punctual, professional, friendly, and went out of their way to make sure the job was done right. My doors look absolutely amazing and I feel confident that they are correctly waterproofed and flashed so that I don't have this problem again. They even helped re-caulk and seal a different door that wasn't in the original scope. Would absolutely use SFW again for future projects. But Christian assured us that this is what they do all the time and they would be out within three weeks. Two weeks later we got a surprise call asking if they could come out the next day. (yay!) Greg and Juan showed up and completed the work in two days. They were professional and answered any questions. Their intake and discussion of scope of work was very clear. The job site was left tidy at the end of the day. The entire intake process was actually pretty reassuring as it did feel like this is what they do all day every day. We would hire them again. We originally called SFW to deal with some siding wood rot, but they identified the need to replace the patio door. They were very helpful in identifying the best replacement door and scheduling the install. The workers were friendly and polite and were very flexible working while my wife was home, which I appreciated. The install went great and they even took the time to investigate a separate unrelated drip that happened while they were there. Lastly, the foreman of the job even stopped by on his day off to make a final adjustment after we spotted a small gap in the door after installation. Great crew and thoughtful staff. read more

Due to the way our house was built the design allowed for massive water damage. We interviewed a few different contractors and decided to go with SFW, per a couple of outside recommendations. SFW has the capacity to handle any repairs or reconstruction we may need. One source for it all. We like that. We are extremely happy that we went with SFW. We knew step by step where we were in the process. The communication was helpful, especially not knowing How much dry rot we were looking at. It ended up being a lot! SFW was able to coordinate all external contractors we needed such as roofers, masonry and gutter specialists. They took all of that coordination off of our plates. Well worth it! Ultimately, our house did get painted and the job was adequate. However, we had multiple concerns along the way, and if SFW (or future customers) can learn from these concerns, then I feel right about voicing them. I recognize, too, how I need to better protect myself next time. 1. The written paint estimate was confusing. We went round and round, and the bid seemed to include things we did not want, while things we did want were crossed off the list. My concerns were brushed aside and SFW tried to appease me with assurances that this was merely a template. 2. After paying the initial 25% deposit on 5/16, we were invoiced for it again on 5/25. Furthermore, after we paid on 5/16, two weeks passed with no scheduled start date. Then, in what appeared to be a mad scramble, SFW announced the evening before that the job would start the following morning. When the crew arrived, they did not have the necessary materials to get started and sat for several hours in their vehicles before work could begin. To me, this indicates poor planning and organization. 3. While the crew was prepping the house for painting, they urged us to consider additional siding work. The need for this additional siding work was disappointing because SWF had already been out to do siding repairs for us earlier in the year. We assumed all areas of concern had been addressed. Clearly, they had missed some key areas of rot and this additional round of work came at a steep cost. The end result is this: The total project cost 60% more than we had originally discussed. My mistake is I should have insisted the bid clearly spell out exactly what work we wanted and put into place a budget cap, as well as clear protocol before any additional work was performed. SFW did siding repair and paint on my 1909 home. They left tape, pieces of plastic drape, lead paint chips, sandpaper, and other materials around the house that I had to pick up. All of the plants around the house and garage were sprayed with paint, though the contract stated that all plants would be covered. Workers showed up without notice early in the morning a few times after I requested advance notice because I work night shift. My back door also ended up being painted in error. The positives are that the team kept coming out to fix problems (like paint on roof shingles and on the cement foundation) until everything was resolved, I was given a $250 credit towards plants, and the paint does look nice. I did expect better quality, more attention to detail, and fewer problems for the price and the professionalism the company presented itself with initially. Excellent service. I was looking for a business that could cover a number of different issues around the house versus calling multiple businesses. I saw SFW on Yelp and the good reviews and was impressed with the number of services offered. I called and spoke to Christian who was extremely helpful. I was in the process of figuring out what needed to be done in a house I was buying while selling my own house. A week before closing, my A/C unit sprung a leak and the water coming out soaked my ceiling and warped it. I was afraid I was never going to get it fixed in time for the sale. I called Christian and asked if there was any possibility of getting it fixed in time. My request was put in and I was told it could probably happen within a week. Christian called me later as soon as a cancellation came in for the next day and I was so relieved. Mitch showed up the next morning and was very nice and informative. Do not hire SFW. They are not honest and will say whatever they need to, to secure the job then take you to the cleaners. We recently hired SFW to repair rot and replace the siding on one side of our home. They understandably were unwilling to give an estimate, not being able to know the extent of the repairs that would be necessary. We needed a ball park idea of what the project would cost, so they guessed 3-4 days $6,000 to $8,000. We are now in $17,000 all repairs completed, the only part of the job left to do is to hang the siding. We requested a written estimate, now there are no more unknowns, all the materials have been purchased. We received the written estimate for $6,900 and were told the job would take 3 days, that's right, equal to the original total job verbal estimate. They have no integrity, their word means nothing. SFW did a fabulous job repairing the dry rot in and around our front windows. I have recommended them to neighbors who have a similar rotting issue. I was skeptical to hire a time & material contractor but once they tore back the initial dry rot and found more, I understand why they couldn't bid it by the job. SFW did extensive work on our house and that work was expertly done, with high-quality materials, and extensive experience brought to bear. Of the many contractors we have worked with, their team and communication was notably outstanding. We were also impressed with how meticulous and thoughtful every level of employee was, and how the well the executive team treated those employees. There were a couple of minor problems - normal for a complicated four week project - and they were immediately and easily resolved. This company did work for me back in August, I was promised by the sales guy that the work should only take 2 days and it lasted 2 weeks!!! They billed me $78 an hour for their driver to pick up materials I could have easily picked up myself. The sales guy then had the nerve to call me and give me a sob story about how his company pays him for every 5 star review and that his girlfriend has cancer and he could really use the money to pay for her chemo. Unless you want to work with a sleazy, no good company, look elsewhere!!!! And make sure to read all the reviews! Wish I would have because all the negative ones are 100% correct! These guys were good! I had some dry rot on my wood siding and pillars on my porch and back deck. The used good quality cedar and replaced the rotted pine. They made some 10% angled cuts on some of the trim on the posts to allow rain water to run off, helping prevent future rotting. It was a nice touch that I appreciated. The only issue I had was that there was some missing trim at the top of the posts we didn't catch in the walk through, but they came back quickly to fix it. I recommend them. read more

We requested an estimate of costs prior to work being done, but SFW did not provide. We were shocked when we got the bills. Total was over $7000! There were 2 invoices with every little item (screws, saw blades, cans of paint listed with a 20% mark up [like 20 items], one bill had a late charge but it was send after the 1st invoice, and then they over charged for actual labor done. It was like they were trying to "rip us off". At these prices one would expect superior work, but NO. The following occurred ( with many phone calls & repeat trips from SFW). This was very time consuming & frustrating! 1. The Billing mess ups: Over-charged, Invoicing not on time with incorrect late charges. 2. Doing work not authorized. [Painted & chalked wrong door/window] 3. Not finishing work, then coming back & doing outside painting only to have it wash off in the rain. 4. Interior ceiling painting not done well: See photos 5. Outside paint washing off & window frame damage: See Photos 6. Left sheetrock that we provided outside to be destroyed by the rain and we had to dispose of. As stated above, SFW is apparently mis-managed (over stretched in this boom time and provide an overpriced service with some questionable billing practices. read more

I never get back to them because they did not deliver what they promised. I hired them for repairing a part of my siding (cedar shingles) which was the root cause of the water leaking. Then visited the wall on the first day and they said they can fix only that part of the wall. When they removed the shingles of that part of siding, they said they cannot replace the cedar shingles and they have to remove the entire wall and re-install all the cedar shingles from top to bottom. They claimed it is just faster to remove all the way to the ceiling and redo everything, which was not true at all. That ended up to more than $10000 and it doubled the time of the project. Only a few feet of the wall needed a repair but they killed the whole wall. The top part of the wall was in a good shape and all the plywoods backing the shingles were good as well. I did not expect that much cost and was not ready for paying that quickly. Then they stopped working because I had only one day delay in paying the balance which quickly raised above $5000. After I paid the balance, they returned to work, but they did not deduct the off-time in the next bill. Every day, they charged about 16 or 16.75 hours of work for two men, but in reality they worked about 10-12 hours effectively. They were supposed to spend 30min for launch but their launch time was never less than 45min. Very inefficient workers. Horrible experience when you realize you have no choice but keep paying unacceptable bills just to finish the project in the middle of winter. read more

BEWAREOF USING SFW CONSTRUCTION LLC!!! DO NOT accept a time and materials contract, job times will be inflated by slow moving crews. DO NOT believe estimates of times to do projects. Two hour estimates become three day messes. DO NOT expect to communicate with supervisors. Multiple phone calls, e-mails and even letters will not be responded to. DO expect to manage the job yourself, in our case ending in firing the crew and asking them to leave. DO NOT expect cleanliness. The crew worked in a messy environment, never cleaned up at the end of the day and the company had to be threatened with financial cost to take garbage away. WORST OF ALL, DO NOT expect to negotiate any problems. We eventually went to arbitration ( as outlined in SFW own contract language) and even the arbitrator said," SFW refuses to negotiate in good faith." read more

SFW was hired to repair dry rot behind some siding. The deconstruction and dry rot repair was done expertly in only one day, and the cost for that was very reasonable. However, the residing took way too long, and the costs escalated unbelievably fast. The final cost of the project was almost 6 times that of the tear-off and structural repair. If I had it to do over again I would get bids from others for the residing, then have SFW do the tear off and structural repair. I truly believe this would have saved about 50% of the cost of a very expensive project. Lesson learned. read more

During the repairs to my house, I was able to ask about and direct the repairs as needed. The repairs were done in a timely manner once scheduled and the finished product was great. The included warranty repair work was just as good. The managers were able to provide me repair documentation and pictures of the repair work for later use as well. Payment was easy and they were able to spread out payment over a few months without adding to my cost. Communication from some of the office staff during and after the process was delayed at times, but the problems and questions were always addressed to my satisfaction. read more

SFW's no bid, no contract methodology results in a uneven playing field for the consumer and what is equivalent to an open checkbook for the business. Bills only included supplier invoice copies upon request. We had to request the invoice backup each time we were invoiced. Never have we been directly billed for garbage bags, a saw horse, and even paper towels, as a separate, stand-alone cost at a price that was nothing short of absurd. Billable labor hours for unskilled labor, "driving" are at the same rate as siding repair and replacement hours. Skilled labor is billable at the same rate, regardless of the skill level and efficiency from a more experienced workforce down to assistant. The same job could be accomplished in distinctly different time frames based on skill level. There is no reason for SFW to not draw out a job for whatever reason they deem necessary, as there is no estimate or commitment to job length, costs, labor, etc. I specifically asked in writing for a complete audit on this project against similar work to determine inequity in job completion costs. While I did receive phone and email communications, none addressed these cost concerns. Replacing siding on one side of our house with very limited need for wood replacement, due to rot, became the largest contacting cost we have experienced for any of the three homes we have owned including much larger and more complex bids and contracts. I can state emphatically that through the lessons learned from a no-bid process, we will never engage with SFW or any other contractor who structures their business model in such a way that incentivize the contractor at the expense of the consumer. I not only do not recommend SFW, but will go beyond that in communicating to the general public and consumer protection agencies regarding the allowability of SFW's "blank check" approach. While the quality of the work appears to be acceptable - the cost to arrive at the desired destination is without fairness or limits. We recognize that we relinquished our rights when we agreed to such a one sided arrangement despite being forewarned with the original PDF and required email acknowledgement of receipt. SFW practices could easily be described as predatory and less than forthright. The good news is we are working with a new and improved contractor to finish the repairs and paint we had originally hoped we could have accomplished with SFW. We accepted bids, evaluated them and entered into a jointly beneficial contracting process that has elevated our path to completion moving forward. read more
