I tried Sfizio Pizzeria for the first time last night and thoroughly enjoyed everything.
The breadsticks had loads of fresh garlic with the perfect amount of herbs, and they were chewy, crispy, and impossible to resist, so it's good that an order is very shareable, being the same size as one of their 12" pizzas. They come with a decent amount of their delicious San Marzano tomato sauce, which is wonderfully tomato-forward with minimal additional seasoning, letting the sweet and lightly acidic tomatoes shine. The additon of some shaved Grana Padano cheese is also a nice change from the usual Parmesan.
I honestly think the meatball sub may be tied with my previous all-time favorite (from Isabella's Brick Oven in Baltimore, iykyk). I asked for extra sauce and they really took me seriously. It was even better with some of their Calabrian chili-infused olive oil and a Deep River "Juicy Rapids" hazy IPA from the DFH bar. The house-made bread was SO GOOD and held up to my admittedly unreasonable sauce request beautifully (apparently their sub already comes adequately sauced unlike a lot of other places) and was both soft and chewy in just the right ways. As for the meatballs, they held their own against the bread and sauce, all of whom were trying to be the star of the dish in the best way possible. The blend of beef and pork hit the perfect savory notes for the sandwich, and the inclusion of some big, beautiful fresh basil leaves topped the whole thing off perfectly. Photo note: normally the sub comes with Provolone cheese but I skipped it because I'm weird. Did I mention I asked for extra sauce?
My BFF was honestly impressed with her Italian chopped salad, including the vinaigrette with pomegranate and Za'atar. Salads can often feel like a consolation prize - the thing you get because you feel like you "should" as opposed to the thing you really want - but she was genuinely surprised by how much she enjoyed it.
I genuinely can't wait to come back and try their pizza, especially considering that the fantastic breadsticks were made from their delicious pizza dough. Also - they advise that pizza and breadsticks be ordered par-cooked if you're getting them to go. *Heed this advice* because it would be a crime to experience *that* dough in anything other than its ideal fresh-from-the-oven state. Trust me.
