I went here for a quick lunch. The only meat halal here is the gyro meat that's mixed with lamb and beef. I got the gyro with the halal lamb and beef with added avocado. How am I only finding out about these cookie now Ordered half a dozen semi-sweet from Postmates and they made them fresh to order, it took an hour but it was worth it. The cookies came in a nice red box and were still warm. Cookies themselves were crunchy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. Forget room service - find me a cookie counter! With my destination identified on Yelp, my Maps app said California Golden Cookies was only a half-mile walk away. The stroll down the hill was fine. The definition of a family business. This man was almost closed at midnight and opened the doors for us, and lo and behold multiple people showed up all of the sudden, and he was packed. Support your local businessman, and he will support you. He proceeded to make some of the best euro wraps you can have, especially late at night, and they were wonderful and so was he. Remember the post-credits ending of "The Avengers"? Yeah, as the superheroes were all sitting around a table as they all tried the shawarmas. You couldn't quite tell whether they were exhausted from the battle against the Chitauri to save the planet or they just weren't into the shawarmas. After trying SF Wraps, I tend to think the latter since there are few things more disappointing than a marginal shawarma at lunch. At least that's what happened to me when I came in here in a hurry before heading back into the office. Now this used to be California Golden Cookies, but even though the cookies are still for sale, the purveyors finally switched the name to something more accurate about their menu. They offer the standard Greek options like spanakopita, hummus, falafels, gyros and ah yes, wraps. The name change hasn't done anything to improve the quality of the food here though. I ordered the supposedly fool-proof $8.45 Shawarma Wrap, which was a somewhat crusty piece of lavash slathered with hummus and tahini sauce and rolled around shards of beef and lamb gyros, cucumber, tomatoes, lettuce and chopped red onions (photo: http://bit.ly/1Sw4fLK). It just tasted off, really off, with the meat having that unmistakable consistency of post-freezer burn. I ate a third of it but no more. Now I know how Iron Man feels. Surprisingly enough it's very tough to find a place to grab dinner around the Financial District -- perhaps all the executives ain't working on weekends, who knows? Three people in our group wanted a kebab so we start searching for one that was close to the hotel and nice. SF Wraps has a small store with a few tables to sit and eat. I ordered the Shawarma without changing anything. It took us about 5 minutes to get the order, which I think was pretty fast. \ Wrap was good but the meat did not taste like shawarma at all. I was not expecting an authentic turkish meal, but did get a little disappointed. I think prices were high, if you think this is a "fast food" place, but the portions are quite big. I went by this location Thursday 7/15 and it had a sign saying they were closed and would be back in 30 minutes. 1.5 hours later, still closed. Fast forward 2 days and I still wanted to try this place. Only one person in the restaurant (he may have worked there? Related to owner?) and I was greeted promptly. Ordered a gyro and was charged $14 and change. Tried to eat my gyro, which was wrapped in foil, and half of it fell on the ground. The pita bread had disintegrated and split vertically about 6 times. Which I don't understand because the gyro was so dry. Just a tiny amount of tzatziki sauce on the bottom (took a while to find it), 2 tomato wedges, 4 slices of white onion and a smattering of cube shaped romaine. Not a great experience. Easily overlooked because the exterior looks faded and it doesn't look appealing to order up food here, but I went in anyways because I craved for Mediterranean falafel that day and wanted to try a new place! There is only one worker and I believe that she may be the boss as well, but don't take my word for that! They have gyros on the menu and cookies upfront. I wanted my falafel craving to be fulfilled so I ordered my falafel. The falafel was quickly served. I'm unsure if that was a good thing or not because it might have been pre-made, warmed up in the microwave and there were hardly any customers when it was during the lunch rush hour! Their Falafel entree was okay. It was on the bland side with not a lot of seasonings added to it. The hummus and salad dressing saved the dish with the hummus' creamy texture and the salad dressing's sweet and sour flavor. I was not at all enthused by the hot sauce that they provided, however, because it was clearly Chinese hot sauce and not Mediterranean hot sauce. I know and love my hot sauce because not only do I prefer to add it to every specific cuisine dish I usually get, I am Chinese. Talk about trying to serve Mediterranean food here! On top of that, I asked for a cup of water and it was clearly sink water because it had a murky aftertaste to it. Ugh. A wasted meal. $9.19 down the drain. Location easy to find on Kearny not far from the China.town gate. Exterior is simple and had a small set of tables & chairs outside. Interior is small but inviting wood furniture. Staff was friendly and professional. Food was delicious. The baba ganoush came out first and my folks and I enjoyed it. The avocado wraps took a little bit longer but were scrumptious. They were rather large so we ate half and ended up saving the rest for later. My folks and I still talk about the SF Avocado wraps! One of the best gyro wraps iv had in the city. Unassuming little spot that I figured just served a variety of your standard wraps but I was instead pleasently surprised to learn is a mediterranean specialty restaurant. I ordered the meat lovers wrap which subs the veggies besides onions for tons of lamb meat along with spicy sauce and tzatziki sauce. The guy at the counter was friendly and helpful and service was super fast. He even walked it out to me rather then just call me back to the counter which was nice. This wrap was as wide and long as my forearm and packed with meat! It was slightly more pricy then whats listed on yelp but a good value considering how much food and lamb meat it was. I opted for medium spicy and it came out just right. Not too hot to handle but flavorful. The lavash wrap was thin and crisp and held up under the weight of all the filling. It is nice it was open late. I went in asked for a dolma wrap. He asked me if I wanted it spicy or not. I very clearly said not spicy. I am pregnant and just can't handle it right now. Get to my hotel. Eat 1/4th of it, it is clearly spicy and I was sick all night :( I wish he had been more clear about the ingredients. The gentleman gave me a look when I clearly said not spicy.... A look like he wanted to warm me but clearly wanted the sale. They were about to close. I have never had a spicy dolma. Hummus, soggy tomatoes, massive chunks of onions, lettuce and dolmas - I am not sure what in here would be spicy but I had my husband try it (he enjoys spice) there was chili flakes or oil... Both were pretty good. I'm glad I didn't order a wrap for myself because I wasn't that hungry, but if I had been this would have been plenty of food. It wasn't bad either. The gyro meat was ok. The falafel was a little spongy and even though it was edible I wouldn't get that again. We were in and out in less than 10 minutes. Listen, I wanted to love this place. Middle Eastern next to my Arabic class, what's not to love. But I was in a hurry, needed a pre-class snack, ordered the rice. Menu said "carrots, onions, spices, oil." Price was $6+. What I got was rice. Yellow rice. With oil. Photo attached. There were orange SPECKS in the rice. I imagine that's what they meant by carrots. I'm not exaggerating, they were specks. If put all together, they would probably make for one-fourth of an inch of carrot. There wasn't even salt. Oh, and no onions. None that I could see or taste anyway. I don't care how good the other dishes are.
