I wouldn't even recommend this place to my WORST ENEMY. No bride should have to go through what I experienced here. From the beginning, the process was chaotic and misleading. At my initial appointment, I clearly explained the alterations I needed: unlining the bodice, taking in the dress, adding lace to the neckline, adding a bow at the waist, and adding a CRINOLINE TO THE SKIRT. I was quoted FOUR THOUSAND DOLLARS, which already felt excessive. When I returned to review everything, the owner denied ever agreeing to unline the bodice and made me feel like I had imagined the conversation. It was incredibly frustrating and honestly upsetting. Only after I pointed out that it was written in THEIR OWN NOTES did they reluctantly agree to include it. Trying to adjust the scope to reduce costs turned into an even worse experience. When I called to REMOVE the crinoline from the skirt and asked for an updated price breakdown, I was met with SHOCKING hostility. The assistant raised her voice, spoke to me in an extremely disrespectful way, and told me to come pick up my dress if I was "trying to negotiate," which I was NOT. I was simply trying to make the alterations more affordable. She refused to provide an ITEMIZED breakdown and instead doubled down on being aggressive and dismissive. She also told me that if I removed the skirt alteration, the bodice alone would cost TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS and that she would NOT adjust pricing to reflect the reduced work. When I went to pick up my dress, the same assistant avoided eye contact and denied the entire interaction. A coworker who overheard the phone call came with me and confirmed EXACTLY how I was spoken to. Even then, there was NO apology, NO accountability, and NO attempt to make things right. The lack of professionalism, transparency, and basic respect is honestly SHOCKING, especially for a business working with brides during such an important time. I left feeling disrespected, dismissed, and completely unsupported. This was one of the WORST customer service experiences I've ever had. DO NOT go here unless you are prepared for a stressful and deeply disappointing experience. (Response to her comment below) At no point was I unwilling to follow professional guidance or understand the complexity of the work. I was very clear from the beginning about what I wanted done, including unlining the bodice, adding lace, a bow, and a crinoline to the skirt. I also understood that certain elements might be more labor-intensive, which is exactly why I asked questions and tried to adjust the scope. The issue was not simply pricing or feasibility -- it was HOW I was treated. When I called to remove one of the requested alterations to make the cost more manageable, I was not "shifting scope" irresponsibly, I was trying to work within a budget. During that call, I was spoken to in a way that was completely unacceptable. Your assistant raised her voice, was openly hostile, and refused to provide an ITEMIZED breakdown when I asked for one. I was told to come pick up my dress if I had questions, which is not a professional or respectful way to handle a client. To be clear, I did NOT walk away because of the complexity of the work. I chose not to move forward because of the lack of professionalism and the way I was treated. A coworker of mine overheard the phone call and accompanied me when I picked up my dress, and can confirm exactly how that conversation went. I understand that not every project is the right fit, and I respect a business declining work when necessary. However, that does not excuse dismissive or hostile communication with a client, especially when simply asking for clarity on pricing. I stand by my review. I was very nervous to pick a place to go but chose Sew Elegant based on their wonderful reviews, and I'm glad I did! Esin was so sweet and guided me through the whole process. I ended up only needing a hem and a bustle but they did both beautifully. When I asked for more attachments for the bustle they quickly added them without question. On the day you couldn't even tell the dress had been bustled-it was done so beautifully it looked like part of the design of the dress. It is with a heavy heart that I write this review. Esin seems like a very sweet lady, but unfortunately my dress was butchered in a way that was irreparable. I am including pictures to make it very clear what happened: The dress that I chose featured a floor length sheath skirt with two flanking "wings" of fabric flowing out from the sides into a long train (per pictures 1 and 2). The dress I brought to Sew Elegant was my size and fit me almost perfectly, but we discussed whether it was possible to make the skirt appear just a little more fitted. When I next saw the dress they had cut away most of the front panel of material (which originally wrapped behind the legs to give a fitted "sheath" look) and had attached it onto the wing pieces using two Frankenstein-seams which created two "scars" all the way down the front of the dress, making it into one large skirt instead of the fitted silhouette with wings. It was a very expensive dress and it was utterly ruined. Completely changing the concept of the dress was bad enough, but the fact that what they did made the dress so very ugly made it even more unforgivable. (I should mention that I later learned it is standard practice at a first meeting/fitting to look at the dress and discuss changes, and to then pin the dress to reflect those changes at a second fitting, and that no cutting should ever be done before showing the client what you are planning to do. But they went straight to cutting so that by the second time I saw the dress it was already ruined.) I ended up having to wear it because there was no time (or budget) to find anything else, but I'll never get the day back - or have the opportunity to feel magical in my dress on my wedding day. I'm just really really sad about the whole thing . It also means I can neither hand the dress down to my children or re-sell it. They made no attempt to do anything to compensate me for the damage and instead tried to disclaim all responsibility by saying that was how the dress always was, and/or that was what I had asked for. I read all the great reviews of Sew Elegant before using them and had no hesitation at all in entrusting my dress to them, but unfortunately based on my experience, I would have to strongly discourage anyone from using this business, especially for something like a wedding dress where a mistake like this causes such emotional and financial distress. read more

Esin and her team exceeded expectations and are truly the sweetest team. They can make any bride feel like the only bride that exists! I had ordered a wedding gown before COVID closures but I received it when everything was locked down. My (now) husband and I decided that we should still hold our date and have an elopement followed by a party at a later date with our friends and family. As the day crept closer, this gorgeous (and expensive) gown sat in my closet to be replaced with a random slip dress I ordered online because, with all of NYC closed I knew I wouldn't get my dress altered in time. I took my second look gown for my wedding to the team at Sew Elegant. The entire experience was outstanding and I'm truly grateful to Esin and her team for the magic they performed. I had purchased a two piece ensemble at a sale from a local bridal shop. The pieces were stunning but there were issues including sizing. At the time I purchased the items, I had been led to believe that altering them would be easy and straightforward. Fast forward to my first trip to meet with Esin. While she explained that these were not easy alterations, she and her team quickly went into problem solving mode to figure out a game plan. They reassured me and worked with me to make this ensemble what I imagined it could be. Esin was honest and direct to me; but in a kind and loving manner. It was as if it was my grandmother was there to fix the problem and make sure I was happy. I had two followup fittings and appointments with Esin and her team. Everyone was so kind throughout the process. I truly felt like they cared and that they wanted to get this right. Despite my original understanding, it was not an easy job. For example, the silk top needed a panel added to ensure the proper fit and look. Esin was able to match the silk exactly--so well, that when I saw the finished top I could not figure out where the panel was! She and her team also came up with the idea of adding full buttons down the back of the top -- it was originally a completely exposed back --- the buttons are a dream and made this piece modern yet elegant and classic. I will absolutely use these pieces in the future. I cannot recommend Esin and her team enough! I actually had visited her in the past for a bridesmaid's dress and my experiences made it such that she was who I recommended to my bridesmaids. Naturally almost 2 years later it won't fit me perfectly any more and needs some urgent fix. I would advise all brides to steer clear of this shop. I had four fittings here and paid over $900, and in the end had to run around like a maniac 3 days before my wedding to have the dress fixed by a local Brooklyn dry cleaner. This was by far the most stressful part of wedding planning for me, and it was entirely due to Esin & team's lack of care. First fitting seemed fine enough - Esin and her assistant hastily pinned me up (the dress was quite large). Went back for my second fitting and they hadn't taken the dress in nearly enough - I was still swimming in it. Esin claimed I had "lost weight" in an effort to excuse her team's poor workmanship. The dress was literally 3-4 inches too large around me - I certainly did not lose 3-4 inches around my waist in the three weeks between appointments! Went for my third fitting a mere week before my wedding expecting things to be nearly perfect, and they were unfortunately not. Esin's team had taken in the dress at the waist but failed to take into account that this further alteration caused the shoulders and back to bulge/puff and not lie flat. The dress should have been taken apart entirely with the shoulders and back taken in as well to avoid this problem, but the team took a lazy approach. I pushed Esin on this and she claimed nothing could be done. I pushed further and she agreed to "see what they could do." I would note that while Esin seems lovely and sweet at first, the moment her work is called into question her demeanor flips and she becomes extremely unhelpful. Came back for my fourth fitting the week of my wedding and the issue persisted. I ended up taking the dress to a local cleaner in Brooklyn (shoutout to Olga at Downtown Cleaners) who charged me $20 to take in the shoulders so that the back of the dress would lie flat. Not sure why that was not within Esin and team's $900+ budget. read more

WOW! What can I say other than Esin is an Angel! Not only was she kind and lovable she saved the day! I tried on my wedding dress that I had already had altered a few days before my wedding and found out that it was gaping at the breasts as they had deflated due to my menstral cycle. Not going to lie three days before my wedding I presumed there was no hope as I don't live in NYC and it was hard in Los Angeles to get bridal alterations 6 weeks in advance never mind three days. My experience with Sew Elegant was incredible. They were recommended to me by Glamour Closet, where I bought an extremely oversized, off-the-rack dress that I just knew was "the one" but needed to be completely remade. As such, the alterations cost more than the dress itself but I knew that was going to be the case and I'm happy I paid the price for a proper alteration team. Originally the timeline for alteration was 2 months, but because of COVID-19 I only had 3 weeks from when businesses were allowed to reopen until my wedding--and Sew Elegant worked their magic quickly for me! The dress had to be completely reshaped--from a size 14 to about a size 6--and I also wanted to separate the outermost skirt layer from the rest so it could be worn with or without it. The first appointment prior to COVID was with Esin, who made my mom and I feel very comfortable with her warmth and thoughtfulness. Then once businesses reopened I had 3 appointments in under 3 weeks with Sina and Halinka doing the majority of the heavy lifting on that actual alteration. Sina was tireless during my first fitting in pinning up the dress and talking through the intended alterations with me and my mom (who was on Facetime from RI)- she also was very available by phone to touch base while there was COVID uncertainty. And Halinka blew our minds with her seamstressing- she is absolutely remarkable- a perfectionist and professional at the highest level. I took a risk hoping that I could find a seamstress that could see through the enormous pile of fabric that I bought and understand my vision for the outcome- and I'm so lucky that I went with Sew Elegant. Initially the dress only needed a few tweaks, but when I unexpectedly found out I was pregnant before the second fitting I was incredibly nervous about what would happen to the dress. While the dress still fit after the second fitting, it was very tight on the third fitting with only a few weeks before my wedding. My last fitting was 5 days before my wedding and I wasn't sure what to expect. Her team worked some incredible miracles and found some extra space to let the dress out. I went with my sister for her fittings with Esin, and I was shocked at how awful this woman was at the final fitting. First, it seemed she did not have us in her appointment book and tried to make us leave. We pushed back on this because we both took time off work for this appointment and traveled from out of state. One of the other women came over and tried to calm Esin down, explaining that we were actually penciled in the book. We ended up getting to try on the dress but it was too loose in the torso, so the dress kept sliding down. Esin tried to convince my sister that it looked great, so that she could hurry us out the door. I asked if we could have a little more time to talk through the options, and I said, "please this is a very big expense for us and we want to make sure everything is perfect." Esin replied, "you think this dress is expensive? No it is not expensive at all. An expensive dress is a lot more than yours cost." And I was so offended because, sorry, $2800 is a lot for us. And these were $850 alterations on top of that, with a woman who is demeaning and rude. This led to a shouting match in front of other customers, at which point another seamstress came back to try to calm Esin down again. The other seamstress pinned my sister's dress more fittingly and told us to come back in a week. In the end, my sister looked great but the customer service from Esin was atrocious. This happened a while ago but we still talk about it to this day. That's how traumatic the experience was. read more
