TL;DR version: Corporate takeover ruined local business, fired all of the workers without notice…read more I held off from writing an updated review since S&L bought out Roll With It, because I really loved this place and I was hoping the struggles they were having were just the growing pains / adjustment period typical of a change in ownership. However, that was not to be the case here. S&L simply ruined this awesome gaming cafe. After they took over, they got rid of many of my favorite menu items, increased prices on everything including the gaming fees, and then started to treat their staff like trash. Several of my friends and I had been regularly attending their weekly team trivia events since they started, and we had built a great rapport with the staff, so we were really let down when they stopped doing weekly trivia back in December. Then they closed for almost 2 months while they claimed "remodel" but really, the corporate masters just showed up Monday 26 FEB 2024 and fired everyone without any notice. This got picked up in the local news cycle, so Corporate went into a panicked damage control, but their lies were continually exposed by the former staff and others knowledgeable . So now I'm completely done with S&L and will be encouraging everyone I know in the local tabletop gaming community to avoid this place like the plague it has become. I sincerely hope to see this become an empty storefront very soon.

Cute little spot…read more We have been meaning to try it out and thought a rainy day would do the trick. We waited quite a bit to be greeted by any employee but the sign said wait to be seated. Once an employee finally came we were seated right after. There is a $6+ charge for person playing games. The menu was incredibly limited but what they lacked in food they surely made up for in their came collection. They also offer a little store area where you can buy some games brand new if you choose. Also, they don't offer lattes. Not sure if I'm the only one who thought this would be a board game and coffee place considering the name. Hoping they are able to improve/expand the food/drink options. They state there is no tipping. Instead there is an automatic 18% fee for everything.

I recently placed an order for some "BattleTech" products. It wasn't in stock at the store last week, but it was at another location. They said it would take a week to transfer the material to the Va Beach location and I agreed and left my number with them for when it arrived to the store. A week later I called to check the status and the product was still at the Newport News location. I called the NN location and let call and confirmed the product was in stock and I told them I was on my way to get the material. About an hour later (I live in Va Beach) and upon arrival the product was not on the shelf. So I checked with the register and see if they pulled it. Long story short the material wasn't there. The person who took my call wasn't there anymore and didn't tell the rest of the staff. So I inquired with the assistant manager who called the other locations and turns out the material was at the Va Beach location and told me that the material was transferred to the store two days prior and yet didn't call me. So the manager calls the Virginia Beach and talks to someone and confirms the material is at the store. They say its there and the manager apologies and I tell them to let the Virgina Beach store I am on my way again. I get to the VA Beach store and no one really knows about the order yet again and they can't find it. At5 this point after 2.5 hours of driving around I am frustrated, and the staff can tell. It takes them about 20-25 minutes to find the order, but it finally located. What did the staff do to make this better, Nothing, no discount or any offers or whatever. I didn't make any demands of such but after they had me wasted all that time driving around. The logistics management here is just poor. They lost the order effectively, took them a week to "transfer" a product to another store, and can't make a phone call. I been have been a long time customer (years) and this was just a huge let down.

I had cards ranging anywhere from $1 to over $100. In the binder that I brought that day, the total value of the cards, according to TCGPlayer market price, was right around $1k. I was in discussions with one of the owners of the store. I had asked if he was interested in purchasing any of the cards that I had. After flipping through a few of the pages, he said that he would take them all. So we began going through the process of getting all the cards out of the binder so they could be scanned and added into a program that checks the value of the cards. It was almost closing time so I would have to leave my cards there for them to start on it the following day. The gentleman that was helping me also told me that he pays 60%. I knew to temper my expectations because I was trying to sell them at a card shop. They, on average, typically only pay between 45%-55% of market value or last sold numbers from Ebay. Oh, and another thing, he does go off of TCGPlayer numbers...but not market price. He goes off of TCGPlayer Low numbers. He told me that maybe the most he could do might be around $560 or so and/or maybe some store credit. But that we would have to wait and see after all of the cards are scanned. I probably should have stopped everything, grabbed my cards, and left. But because I'm probably not going to collect anymore, I just said whatever and continued on. Almost a whole day goes by, so I call the store an hour before closing to find out if my cards were ready yet. I did call once earlier in the day and they told me that once it was done scanning that they would call me with an offer. I hadn't heard anything all day so that's why I called them. Apparently they were just finishing up and was waiting to hear back from the owner that was involved with the sale. Well, while we were on the phone, the owner did message back so the guy on the phone asked if he could call me back in 10 minutes with my offer. I said okay and waited. He calls me back with the offer, I reluctantly agreed to the absolute lowball of an offer I received. The explanation I got at the store when I went to get my money was "Because of the added bulk (low dollar cards) included in the deal, I was only afforded 55%." I leave the store and on the way home, it hits me. I'm like.."You sneaky, bitch!!" Got me!! The only advice I have to give everyone who is trying to sell cards to this place is: MAKE DAMN SURE THAT YOU SELL YOUR HIGHER VALUE CARDS SEPERATE FROM YOUR LOWER VALUE CARDS. This place will penalize you for bundling it all together. They will take all of your cards, but you will never see your potential max value or his so called 60%, if you have a bunch of $1-$3 cards bringing your better cards values down. It's a good trick. Hell, I fell for it. Its a guaranteed win-win for them. They like bulk cards to sell so they get them for dumb cheap, while also getting people's good cards on some sneaky cheap cheap. And then give you some excuse that because of all the other cards values we could only offer this amount. So just be aware of the situation if you do sell your cards there. Well, typically, if you're selling your cards at a card shop, you already know that you're going to be taking a considerable loss. Rarely, do you ever come out of there as the winner. Unless, if you're stealing your cards from places to sell them at other places, then that's all profit. But tsk, tsk, tsk..bad juju on you! Don't do it!!

The shelves are overflowing with comics from every universe--Marvel, DC, indie stuff that makes you question reality, and at least one title where a duck is a private investigator (don't ask, just read it). The staff? Legends. They speak fluent nerd, offer reading recommendations like comic sommeliers, and will absolutely roast you (lovingly) if you call Batman a superhero with no powers. This is a pure comic temple. Graphic novels as far as the eye can see. You'll walk in for one issue and leave with enough reading material to survive a small apocalypse. Compared to all the shops I've been too, this is one of the larger LCSs. That's because they also hold playing cards tournaments. That's a whole different animal I don't want to get into. The store has it all. You want modern, old age, graphic novels, back issues, $1 bins, slabs, toy collectibles, figures, Pops, manga, and other art works, it's here. Along with candy, snacks, soda and a bathroom. How long do these card tournaments last? Geeks, told you they're different animals. ;p Much respect to the card community. And I guess they pass out tee shirts to new visitors. Automatic five stars there. Seriously overall is five stars. This place has it all and the people working there were very nice. I was able to chat with all of them and understand the comic book community area a bit better. Virginia is a big hub for the community and they get packed. So what are you waiting for, a movie?
