Comic Kings is what happens when a library, a caffeine-fueled nerd, and a printing press have a beautiful, chaotic baby. The shelves are overflowing with comics from every universe--Marvel, DC, indie stuff that makes you question reality, and at least one title where a duck is a private investigator (don't ask, just read it). The staff? Legends. They speak fluent nerd, offer reading recommendations like comic sommeliers, and will absolutely roast you (lovingly) if you call Batman a superhero with no powers. This is a pure comic temple. Graphic novels as far as the eye can see. You'll walk in for one issue and leave with enough reading material to survive a small apocalypse. Kid in a candy store. Everyone knows that Wednesday's are special to the comic book community. And being away from my LCS, I needed to find a shop. Luckily, we have Yelp. Compared to all the shops I've been too, this is one of the larger LCSs. That's because they also hold playing cards tournaments. That's a whole different animal I don't want to get into. The store has it all. You want modern, old age, graphic novels, back issues, $1 bins, slabs, toy collectibles, figures, Pops, manga, and other art works, it's here. Along with candy, snacks, soda and a bathroom. How long do these card tournaments last? Geeks, told you they're different animals. ;p Much respect to the card community. And I guess they pass out tee shirts to new visitors. Automatic five stars there. Seriously overall is five stars. This place has it all and the people working there were very nice. I was able to chat with all of them and understand the comic book community area a bit better. Virginia is a big hub for the community and they get packed. So what are you waiting for, a movie? ** First YELP review of 2024!! ** I JUST realized that I've been going to comic kings for almost 3 years now and I have not written them a review yet... whoops! Comic Kings has one of the BEST selection of Pokemon singles for sale in the Hampton Roads area, and in Virginia Beach. The carry everything from Modern to Vintage and some international stuff too. I would say that their pricing is fair as well and depending on the card, they can work with you a little on the price. They also have sealed stuff for sale too but depending on the product, it can be a little higher than retail. I love coming to Comic Kings solely for their pokemon collection. They do have and carry other TCG too and obviously a huge selection of comics as well. If you also have collectibles that you want to sell, feel free to bring it in to see if they give you store credit or cash. The workers here are friendly and definitely know their comics and games. I dropped in during a visit to Virginia Beach. It's a fairly large shop with a good selection of back issues, both recent and early bronze/late silver age, at good prices. Their selection of new comics and graphic novels looked good. They have a comfortable looking gaming area and the staff are courteous and welcoming. Comic Kings should be called Gaming Kings. Or at least Comics Jack. PROS: Comic Kings has discounts on all of their graphic novels and back issues pretty much all of the time. Decent dollar bins to dig through. A nice shop if you are a local or a comic enthusiast who just needs to hit up every shop. CONS: Half of the store is committed to gaming tables. This is a trend I do not appreciate. It's one thing if your store is called Geek Den Games and Collectibles or something. But boasting your comics credentials in the name sets a comics fan up for disappointment. VERDICT: Comic Kings is not a bad store. Good if you're looking for Marvel and DC stuff at a decent price. Dollar bins have some surprising gems in there. But with a fairly limited mainstream selection of comics, and most of the store forfeited to Magic The Gathering, the name is bit misleading. read more

I've been here twice before today, and I honestly wanted to turn this into a regular weekly magic game location. Today was the beginning of my birthday weekend, I was so excited to go back to comic kings to start things of with a good evening of magic. After masking a decent purchase I wanted to show the shops"magic guy", the owner said he might appreciate what I was doing. This isn't really a review of the comic store in its current incarnation. I just want to post on here how, a long time ago, specifically way back in 1993, and 20-30 or so other times throughout the next seven years, up until late 2000, when I would visit the place, and under its former name 'Comic's and Things'. My memories of the comic shop back then has been fading more and more over the course of time, but I always remembered when I would first walk in the place, I think it was off to my immediate right there was a huge glass case of VHS animes. Seeing a massive amount of Anime titles was quite the sight to behold for young teenager me. Titles like Gall Force and Robotech were the one's I've always wanted the most because I like the mecha and spaceship designs, and particularly the storyline and music for Robotech. I remember also picking up an old issue of Protoculture's Addict, an out-of-print Robotech Art Book-3, the Robotech Perfect Collection Soundtrack, two Married with Children comics. The few other things I remember buying there were a few Transformers back issues, two Star Wars mangas and two Robotech RPG's. I wish I actually had the foresight to take pictures of the Comics and Things from the inside, for posterity sake. Oh, and the nostalgia those would've brought to me, and probably a lot of other people too. I mentioned earlier that I wasn't gonna do a review for the store as it now, but I have been inside there a handful of times, and from what I've seen, it's very clean and well-kept. The issues they have on sale all seem to be current issues. The staff were very friendly. There's plenty of gaming stuff, etc. There's a gaming area in the center of the main floor. the team here has quickly made comic kings the only place I'll go to scratch my TCG itch. every time i visit, I'm made to feel like a homie amongst homies. Stopped in this morning for some mtg boosters and (after only seeing me once or twice before) the fella behind the counter called me by my first name. Last week, the same fella and one other guy went so far as to pull a bunch of precon decks off the wall to help me pick my first mtg deck. Went here tonite to get some Magic Cards for my son - I have no idea what it's all about, but I do know about Magic Cards from many many years ago. Walked into the place and was just lost as to the selection of Magic Cards, didn't know it evolved that much, because there was a huge selection. The man behind the counter (wish I got his name) was very helpful and patient explaining to me as to what it's all about, I had many questions and didn't know what my son had or if it was for just playing or playing and collecting. Didn't want to call him at first, I wanted to surprise him when I got back to Hawaii, but I had to, didn't just want to get him something that may be "wrong". I was blessed, I came in on the right evening because the man that helped me only works there one night a week. Thank you!!! A kid in the candy store feeling hit me like a truck when I entered the shop! Just happened upon here while driving around. I walked in and saw lots of people playing Magic! I am a bit of a closet geek and the memories of my playing days over 14 years ago came flooding back in. Good selection of cards and comics. Lots of tables to support their periodic tournaments. Even their "shop pro", Pat, was a breathe of fresh air as he tried to fill me on all the changes to the game since I last played. The shop is open to purchasing high value cards and comics and will even give store credit which will get you more bang for your buck, especially if you plan on getting back into the game. The prices are going to be lower than non-specialty stores and are comparable if not cheaper than other card stores. Ended up leaving with a box of booster packs and two playing mats. Needless to say it could have been alot worse on my wallet, but this shop is definitely going to be my go-to shop for anything. Now to dig out my old cards and see what I can use for trade or a little bit of cash! read more

Great customer service any question I asked they were more than happy to help. Have been back 3 times in the last week to get supplies and great experience every time. These guys give off a vibe that non-regulars aren't welcomed. I'm very tired of the snarky know it all responses. I get it you know more than me but that's why I'm here to learn but every question is greeted with a sly remark or just a look, like how would I know unless you tell me ! The first 3 times I walked in I couldn't even get help ! I've had to make myself known each time and now when I walk in it's a " how you doing" I'm thankful I haven't spent any money in this place, comics are great but everything else is up charged ! The same ten I can get from rite aid or Walmart shit! Even dollar general is 24 bucks they sell that same ten for 30 to 35 ?!? Like what the hell (Pokémon/ magic/ yugiyo) in my opinion cool stuff is a lot friendlier welcoming and happy to help read more

After the talk thread the other week and the reviews, I wanted to check this place out. It has been about 10 years since I've into a comic shop, as I walked thru the door I was greeted with a friendly smile and a hello, that was nice since I was obviously new to the store, as their regulars came in they greeted them by name, nice touch. The store is very clean and well organized. In the '90s I used to collect Image comics because of the quality art work, high quality paper and unique story lines, I found several of my old favs in the used bins. I was happy to see a couple still going strong like Spawn and Witchblade. All the new issues were well displayed and easy to see. They had lots of cool collectables, card sets, a large gaming area and they even had drinks and snacks. A very nice cool place! read more

As a self proclaimed magic the gathering collector, I've scoured the interwebs and various hidden comic shops for good deals and insta-buys. I never buy anything full value and always have my handy phone ready to verify deals on eBay, SCG, and other sites. So, with that said, you should know how seriously good the deals here at comic kings are when I tell you I get literally all my cards and supplies from them, save for things that aren't in stock! Awesome prices aside, the actual store is fairly large and the environment is very friendly during a regular bustling FNM. Sometimes seating can be an issue but this has been alleviated by rescheduling other events off of Friday night. They have regular draft nights, EDH nights, and random other events to suit people of all gaming backgrounds. One of the main reasons, money, size, and location aside, that I shop there is because of the owner (Joey) and his manager. Very professional, and very courteous. When I enter the store I always get a hello and a friendly, personal greeting, which to me is more important that stock and price even. All in all I really enjoy the shop! read more

I wanted to read up on the new marvel series guardians of the galaxy before the movie came out because I had actually never heard of it before. U probably gathered that I haven't read many comics over my life. I read the reviews in multiple comic stores in the area and decided to go with this one. When I arrived at the store I was greeted by three people. The store didn't smell bad, not being funny, that is a big turn off for me. When I went to start asking questions they were way more than ready to be helpful. They seemed eager to help me, and I like that. They are VERY knowledgeable, very helpful, very friendly, and to me it seemed to be pretty competitive prices. And if u are just getting into reading comics, this is the store to go to. I ended up leaving with way more than I went in their for. I have been ready as much as I can. They were right. I'll be going back for more. :-) read more

Best comic book store in Virginia Beach. I've been collecting for 35 years and this is one of my favorite stores anywhere. The subscription service is great and they always have plenty of current books on the shelves. The staff is quite knowledgeable and very friendly. There have a rotating stock of dollar books. Plus, there's always a good selection of modern, copper, bronze and silver age books as well. Wall books are always changing too. The store is clean and orderly with plenty of room to browse around. This place is awesome. As a Magic: The Gathering player/collector, I couldn't hope for more...except for free product...wait...they do that too. The owner throws in free product for no-entry-fee tournaments and frequently has random drawings for booster packs and cards, even during those free events. The display case ia always packed with singles at GREAT prices. When I bring cards in to sell to the shop, I always get more than I would at any other store. The employees are friendly and super helpful. If you're looking to learn one of the games being played in the shop, there's always people willinh to help you learn without making you feel bad if you don't pick up on it quickly. Visited recently on vacation and was very pleased that I did-This place is just about as good as it gets. I will be returning next time I'm in town. Good selection of comics and MTG singles, backed up by a decently sized player/reader base and staff who are the epitome of friendly and attentive. I came to buy and trade MTG singles and was pleasantly surprised by the prices and rates when compared to other local establishments. Values for cards are derived from recent Ebay sales, which is great for buyers, less so for sellers, but if you go for store credit the owners and employees cut a great deal that is a win for everyone involved. I encourage anyone to patronize this store, they should be rewarded for their great policy and service. Running a comic/card shop is tough work, and I hope that regulars support this LGS for as long as the owners care to stay in business. Thanks again Comic Kings! You are doing it right! Sometimes around eight pm on a Friday I get this urge. The dollar bins, they beckon. I can smell the geek pheromones pulling me forward, that pungent musk of french fry grease and dusty cardboard. The smokers' cough of my car shifting into park means that I am here. The gentle glow of fluorescence from the open door is marred by the silhouettes and red embers of the smokers who accept temporary exile as penance for their nasty habit. I hold my breath as I slip past the guards and through their vile cloud of acrid carcinogens. Spiderman greets me on my left, jaunty as ever, and once again I threaten to throw him in my car and hold him forever if he doesn't stop giving me those come-hither eyes. At the counter there is a young man, in a tee shirt and flannel, an unassuming four-eyed guardian of the cases. He holds court with two others who each grasp for his acknowledgement as they state their position following the latest shocking turn of the Walking Dead. Joey chuckles at their foolishness and sends them on their way, as the next tournament begins any moment and they are loathe to miss any action on the field of battle. They offer alms in exchange for treats from his larder, snatching them greedily before scurrying away from his Judgement. I glance at the short bookcases that form a row of aisles buffering me from the bustle of the card tables. They are packed full of a wide range of compendiums, volumes, and guides for seekers in the Kingdom of Comics. I cannot tarry long, ere I tire too early. My grail beckons. The counter holds too many distractions to count. My eye slips numbly past the Magic The Gathering, Yu Gi Oh, and other war machines, for they are not my cup of tea. Instead I dip my fingers through in the cardboard trays upon the glass. The pins click and clack as they fall, unchosen, from my palm. They are only a dollar apiece, but the bounty is infinitely varied and I must pace myself lest my wallet become too roomy with the expense and my hoodie too heavy from aluminum. They are decorative, not chain mail in the making. I remove my grasping hand. I have come now, to the wall of new releases. Scores of heroes, anti-heroes, vixens and villains look out from their wood-pulp windows to our less vibrant world. They showcase themselves in any number of alluring and intimidating poses. Some covered with blood, swinging from webs, or sizzling with electric power. Others are not covered with much at all. But hark, who speaks? Josh leans forward, forearms braced against the counter. He listens as a citizen looks for guidance. He wears the Marvel tee shirt of the Oracle and will offer sustenance in the mysterious jungle that is the multidimensional world of Comics. He generously scatters these kernels of knowledge before the birds of geekdom, though some may peck at his flesh. Above him and at his back there is an altar. The elite among our paper brethren are entombed here. Sealed not in carbonite, but encased in plastic sheaths or locked in cases from the CGC graded and preserved, they will be young forever. Some may seek to bring them home for more convenient worship, but despite the reasonable prices fewer will succeed. There are too few talismans to satisfy the seeker horde. At last I turn to the right and look upon my chosen home within this realm. Not the recent issues, neatly bagged and boarded in easily perused categories. No, I kneel before the dollar bins and thrust my face and hands forth. I shall rest when I am weary, but I have eaten my burrito and my stamina is mighty. More half hours than I care to count will pass before I leave here. My hands soon find their natural rhythm and swiftly flick through the delicious chaos. The pile beside me grows. Five comics at a dollar apiece? Might as well make it seven for the same cost. Soon I must choose to go home with fifteen at ten dollars, or continue the reaping til I reach twenty five for an even sexier price. The moon rises and drifts toward midnight. I stumble and grumble at my sleeping legs as I heft my too-high stack of trophies and lurch toward the checkout counter. They are counted, tallied, and slipped neatly into brown paper as I jingle through the pins. I slide my card and make my escape. The night air is cool and the comics feel electric in my arms. read more

Just got threatened by Joey, the store's owner, during my weekly visit to the shop. I have been a loyal customer since the 90s. Unfortunately, he showed me how he really felt about my business on Saturday, November 10, 2012. I met a friend at the store to talk pop culture and compare our "comic collecting pull." It was a gaming day, so there was about 40 to 50 people in the shop. It was an extremely busy and hectic day for the Comic Kings staff. Apparently, it was not busy enough for Joey to leave his post in the shop, run after me outside, and yell at me for "reading his comic books!" The sight of him storming out of the shop and yelling my name was traumatizing...while telling my friend to back off and that "he needed to talk with me alone!" I offered him the chance to explain his vitriol. In all my years of attending his shop, I had never seen him explode on anyone for any reason. I saw him turn into the Hulk on Saturday, and it was not a pretty sight. When asked if it was necessary to "scare the hell out of [me] and my friend," Joey mumbled, "...well, if I see him again, I'll probably apologize or something," but he offered me nothing along the lines of an apology. In an attempt to coax him down from his threatening posture, reddening temper, and raised voice, I asked if there was really a need to treat me in such a manner, especially since I considered myself a "valued customer." He hissed, "...being a 'valued' customer and just coming here to read books doesn't make me any money!" As much as it hurt me to realize the shop keeper I have known for 15 years valued a few dollars more than a valued customer, I can at least take comfort in the fact the situation never heightened to the point where Joey started swinging at me. Huffing and puffing with bloodshot eyes, he calmed slightly when I offered to "pay for the comic books I was reading." After about 15 years of buying books there, I will miss the "mom and pop" atmosphere of Comic Kings...but I can read comic books at my leisure at Barnes and Noble without risking being threatened by the store's owner. read more

Great comics for current reads. All the guys are super helpful, especially Brian. This place has a great selection of cards, comics and manga. However if your looking for the older stuff, like building for your collection, you might want to check elsewhere. Other that, a great place with good ambiance. read more
