LOVE this place. When you step in, it killed my preconceived notions that it will wreak of old comics smell and forgotten print. Boy was I wrong! There is so much to see, browse through, buy! It is not only new edition comics on one wall, it's a display of your fave action heroes like Batman, Yu gi oh, in a glass encased display. I can't name them beyond 2, and that's how dated I am! I highly recommend Local Heroes. They have a great selection of graphic novels and Trade Paper Backs. They are all organized and easy to find. And the way they are displayed, they maintain their great condition. And it's always easy to identify their new release books for the week, as well as back issues. But the thing that stands out the most is the customer service. The owner is great and he maintains an awesome team. Always very helpful and gracious with their time. And if I ever want a special order, I just ask or shoot the owner an email and I always get a personalized response. Again, I highly recommend giving this place a shot. Local Heroes is a hip, stylish, modern store with such a great, unique selection and variety that you will forget how small of a store it is. Not your traditional comic shop experience, in all of the best ways. PROS: Variety and organization! No matter what you like, Local Heroes has at least some of it and they organize it all by genre, not publisher. They have a great selection of indie books, and I don't mean just Image or Dark Horse, I mean small press publishers like Adhouse, Koyama, Peow, Drawn & Quarterly, etc. and even a section of minicomics and zines. Manga section, discount section, all ages section, reality-based section, superhero section. They do all of this while also making space for unique merch, statues, a wall of new releases, lame funko pops, and lame gaming stuff. The shop is always clean and pleasant to shop in. They play nice music so it's not awkward and stuffy, can you believe it? What an idea! CONS: The only con is that the store is small. But they make the absolute best of the space. They're not primarily a back issue bin store, but they built a space-conserving dresser of pull-out drawers as bins to cater to that specific shopper. VERDICT: This is the comic shop for someone new to comics who might feel alienated by the traditional sort of shops, or a hip young shopper looking for well-curated alternative stuff. Local Heroes does all the things you wish the older, legacy shops would do: play some nice music, dust once in a while, make sure it doesn't smell like mildew, keep the books upright and in good shape on the shelves. Every time I walk into Local Heroes, Im always greeted and offered any help I may need. Unlike other comic stores, Local Heroes doesnt leave you overwhelmed when walking around. Everything is neatly organized, labeled and priced. I think the hard part is trying to decide which comic/manga I want to dive into. Another thing I really love about this place is the the playlist they have running while your browsing. The smooth lofi beats provide a cozy atmosphere and don't distract you while youre shopping. Been here three times and each time has sucked in its own bespoke way. This time it was the usual lack of a greeting but they went the extra and didn't reply to my "hello?" I didn't even merit eye contact. If I were casting a 90's movie and needed a disaffected counter-waif to roll her eyes. She'd nail it. On my previous visit the friend I was with got really twisted because a customer of color and an employee of color were bemoaning white people and entitlement. I actually laughed it off but I know if I owned the place I would not appreciate my employees giving free civics lessons while ignoring people standing with an armload of merchandise. My first visit was disappointing because I thought this would be a really hip place in a cool neighborhood like the ones I used to shop in New York. Well those all closed and this one will too. I don't even have any advice to make it better. Hire people who actually read comics? read more

There are 5 star restaurants, 5 star hotels, 5 star service, 5 star travel, 5 star... trapper keepers? Anyways... This is a 5 star comics store (omg graphic novels jerk!). Remember Trilogy comics on Little Creek? As a small robert i used to have tha momz drop me off so i could wander the store for hours hanging out inventorying old comics i wanted to read, checking out the new stuff and geeking out with the figurines. yeah that never happened. the place was cramped with stacks and stacks of boxes with no real displays, and it always seemed like they were never quite moved in or getting ready to move out. the staff were indifferent or just rude. It was run more like a suburban news stand. Local Heroes is the antithesis of all that. The location next to Cogans pizza has lots of space and a great atmosphere. The staff Greg and Meredith are really nice as well as the others i have seen working (Alicia, Kris and Derrick). Recently went to Free Comic Book Day there and it was like a small festival. You can tell they really value their customers. They have comics for every age range and its organized and presented with buckets of cool. I will admit I didn't expect such a great place in this area. It took a long time, but i'm not complaining, i'm happy to catch up on what ive missed through the years. When i go to Local Heroes the young aphex inside of me gets nostalgic and wants to dole out high fives. So here's a five from me guys. well deserved. read more

Came here with the kids for free comic book day. There was a slight wait-but the kids were excited about all the comics. The employees were very helpful in selecting something different or close to what you might like. If it's sunny bring an umbrella and a cool drink. Holy Smokes! I can write a short story about how much I love this comic shop. Ive been stopping by here since they first opened and have always had a welcoming experience. They never seem to run out of smiles and the comic issues I'm looking for. Ive been to every single comic shop in Hampton roads (i made it my mission when i first moved here) and this shop grabbed me the most. Stopped in here to browse the other day and was pleasantly surprised. The guy working behind the counter was really friendly and my friends and I had a good time looking at the FUNKO Pop Head Dolls - they had tons of them - almost every one you could ever want. It's a comic book store so obviously there are tons of comics and a bunch of comic book hardbacks with graphic photos and stuff. There were some other specialty nerd things in here - it was fun to browse and I could see my boyfriend really having a good time in here. I'm not sure how many old or really rare comic books they have - I didn't see any in the plastic hard case for preservation anywhere so I'm not too sure. Plus - it's right beside Cafe Stella so after a browse you can go get some coffee! read more

When I knew I was going to be back in Norfolk I knew I had to come back to Local Heroes. This place makes me heart happy. I'm a firm believer that everyone is a bit of a nerd at heart, and this is a haven for the die-hard comic book junkies or those that are just coming to grips with the knowledge that they are fans of Doctor Who. The staff here will help you discover your inner geekery in a supportive, non-pretentious way. They have comic books, graphic novels, age-appropriate books, stuffed animals, books you've never heard of, on and on. I've bought items here for my young nieces and nephews, and I've bought reality based graphic novels to use in my own classroom (Guy Delisle fan alert!). Make sure you stop by and take your time perusing the wide selection of material (that's laid out in a way that won't overwhelm even a novice). But remember, this isn't Barnes and Noble-- if you're going to sit and read for hours, make sure you're going to purchase something in the end. These people are fantastic and are completely deserving of your support! ps. I'm a big proponent of paying small local business in cash. They accept credit cards, but I always make sure to bring cash here to help them (and other places) avoid credit card fees. read more

Located in Ghent, this is one of the best, if not the best, comic shops I've ever been to in Virginia. Their staff is so friendly and knowledgable, especially when it comes to finding the right comic series for you. Like a book store, they section off their comics by horror, kids, new releases, etc., and also label their staff's picks. They're always stocked with the latest releases, so you better hurry before they run out. Aside from comics, this is a lovely place to buy some POP vinyl, comic-related shirts, and other fun memorabilia. They also sell some of their own branded products, which is definitely cool. This store is the greatest comic book store to grace Norfolk, nay, All of Virginia. When you walk up to the store it seems very casual. You'll probably notice the name and sign and think "oh man, what a great name and sign! I wish I thought of that!" But you didn't. Greg did. But more about Greg later. As you're about to enter the hollowed grounds that is local heroes, you might notice people staring at you from cogans or Stella next door. They are probably jealous that they are eating stupid pizza or drinking Coffee instead of buying comic books. As you enter the temple, and you eyes take a second to adjust to the holy glow, your mind will be BLOWN AWAY by the interior. There will be awesome music playing, and walls and walls of graphic novels and a massive wall of comics to your right. There are also shelves of various items of intrigue, from coffee mugs and cups, to vinyl figures and cards against humanity. Chances are, someone will be working when you enter. As of this writing it will be one of three people: poppa bear Greg himself, who is probably one of the manliest men iv ever met with a heart of gold. He once stopped traffic to let a gaggle of geese cross the street. There's Derrick, who supposedly is packing major heat and has an open carry license given to him by genetics ;). He's also a charming fellow who is always there if you need someone to talk to about anything. Then there's jack. What is there to say about jack that hasn't already been said 3d printing? Shes the way of the future. Possibly from the future. She helped me tie my shoe once. All three of these people are super nice and will do ANYTHING to get the comic/book/whatever you need. That guy who wrote a bad review for this place is a scrub and doesn't know what he's talking about. I heard his wide left him because he's such a terrible person and a liar. Don't believe the HYPE. I have been collecting comics for years, and have been in countless stores, at first, LOCAL HEROES seems to be an alright joint. I had my grumblings with the prices, but I guess they had to afford the couches so a little markup was to be expected. Then came the days that I, being in the military, was not able to go in and pick up comics, and my wife went in my place. The guys there 1) treated her rudely, and 2) pulled the ol' scam mechanic scenario, and charged my wife extra for what they were telling her were limited edition books, which WEREN'T. Since then I had nothing but negative experiences, the staff is very snooty, and makes no effort to quiet obscene or inappropriate conversations when there are children in the store. The prices, the terrible location which makes it IMPOSSIBLE to find a parking spot, and the rude employees have turned me off LOCAL HEROES. They are nothing but hype.. read more

This is a fantastic local business! Greg runs a very chic and clean comic stop for those of us in the area. From the outside it is unassuming. Once you enter, you kind of get blown away at how well organized and clean the place is yet it invites customers to brows and flip through pages. Furthermore, the business is a strong supporter of the local community. I recently called the store and said I had a few dollars I wanted to spend on some comic books to donate to the Childrens Hospital in Norfolk. The very next day I arrived and Greg gave me about 50 books to give to the children......FOR FREE! I will support Greg, Local Heroes and all business such as this that work hard to improve the local community while unpretentiously providing a great service that we demand. An incredibly high quality comic book store, that has an exclusive focus on comic books. The interior of the location is very classy, giving off a "rich people shop here" kind of mood. Floors are clean, bookshelves organized, great ambient lighting, fantastic selection, and the staff is intellectual about what they sell. Regular customers are treated like royalty. Quite a unique comic book store experience for Hampton Roads. Nothing like the chaotic, fire hazard that Trilogy Comics in Virginia Beach is like. That place is awesome too, but I fear a book avalanche will kill someone in there. My largest complaint with Local Heroes, is where the building sits. Parking is almost nonexistent, as the lot across the street belongs to a bank that threatens towing (never happened to me yet, but results may vary). It's also located in an out of the way corner of Ghent, which is historical upper class prominence out the ying-yang, but somewhat of a pain to find on a first attempt. Despite that minor flaw, this place is a top of the line specialty shop that has no equal in Hampton Roads. If you want the latest comic book, take a look and see if the A+ appearance makes you as happy as it made me. read more

This is the store that got me back into reading comics after over ten years. The selection of graphic novels is extensive, and of course they have all the current issues. This place has a nice, laid back vibe to it. The store has personality to it reminiscent of an record shop. The store has a great selection of new releases and a decent number of graphic novels. The one thing i noticed that was great was the large amount of independent books sold there. They also carry t-shirts, figures, and card game stuff. The one thing most collectors will notice is the shop does not have any back issue areas. So if you are looking for significant issues you might have to ask the clerks.
