We had a lovely evening at Sette last week, but... The maitre-d' of this tiny and special restaurant, Guillermo is poised and professional as are his two female service providers. Always attentive, always asking if they "may remove the plate" etc. On the meal itself. The "special" butternut squash risotto was delicious as all 4 of us agreed. Our issue was with the lamb chops. Although well seasoned and perfectly cooked, they were two tiny lamb shanks with hardly any meat on them! Ate here for the 1st time after hearing so many great things. I ordered the lamb chops and for $40 there should be some food on the plate. 2 very petite chops on the bone, maybe 3 oz of sautéed spinach and 3 very small potatoes. Homemade bread was pretty good but very easy for someone to make at home. Ribs were very very average, like they bought it from Costco and just polished it. Risotto was a disaster because it did not have the right sticky texture. Souffle was okay. However the profiterole saved the meal, and is the reason for 4 stars. Wow! What an awesome evening of amazing food. Yesterday, we had an early dinner at sette. Thankfully, my brother and his wife suggested this restaurant to us. It began with a greeting from the owner/chef Allan. So many choices to make... We started with bruschetta (fair warning, this is not a complimentary item, of which, we were aware). The flavors are wonderful. Start with fresh, crusty bread. Add finely chopped onions and a tomato slice. Sprinkle on chopped fresh basil. Then drizzle it with high quality olive oil and parmigiano. Yum. Then, Allan had them bake fresh bread for us. Apparently, even the dough is made in house. This was served with olive oil infused with rosemary. Next, we chose appys. My bf got the house made sweet sausage with potato and hot chilis and I had the shrimp with cabbage which was served in a cream sauce. Both were excellent. We also were lucky enough to try the gnocchi with speck. Small pockets of dough gently wrapped around ricotta with parmigiano reggiano. Amazing. ..but by this time, I am starting to get full. Entree selection was the short ribs for my bf. Very good with carrots in a red wine reduction. I enjoyed the monkfish in white wine - lemon reduction with capers. We both had about half of our entrees to take home. Finally, dessert...none for me. I'll have to pace myself better next time because I am a biscotti psycho and was dying to try theirs. My bf chose the creme brulee. ..his favorite, and we both agreed that it was excellent. (What, you didn't think that I would really not even try his???) Probably, the best part of the meal was Allan. At lunch you can have the whole restaurant to yourself! Sette Cucina Italiana (the full name) offers panini, pizzas, salads and pasta dishes at lunch, price range is $8-15. Started with the bruschettina, 8 pieces of nicely toasted and crusty Italian bread with a roasted tomato slice on top of each plus parmesan, perfect. A salad of arugula, fennel and orange was small but excellent. Paninis came on an Italian loaf (not sliced bread), heavily loaded with prosciutto and a side of potato chips, very good. Our waitress was friendly and efficient but the kitchen was kinda slow, even tho we were the only table it still it took over 20 minutes for salads and sammiches to come out. White tablecloths in this tiny restaurant with very high pressed-tin ceilings, it makes you think you're in the city. read more

A hidden gem so close to home. I wanted to try a local restaurant that we hadn't been to for our anniversary. The food was excellent. I myself enjoy cooking and many times while out to dinner, I think my cooking is better. There are few restaurants that I would call excellent. This is one. It's tiny so we had a reservation. The ambiance and service was great. The owner came out several times to check if everything was ok. While making the reservation, I put a note on open table that we were celebrating our anniversary. The food was so good, we were full and decided to pass on dessert, until he brought out cream puffs with hot fudge and strawberries with a candle to wish us a happy anniversary. Nice touch. Hurry! Run to Costco in Green Brook and pick up your Sette $50 gift card for just $40! I know I am going to get more! My companion and I decided to try this establishment based solely on the gift card and also our love of Italian BYOBs. Here is what made our visit special... We have tried making reservations here 3 times but they were always booked. (weekend) This time, we tried for a week night and succeeded. Upon entering, we then knew why they booked up quickly. They only have 8 tables in the restaurant. That being said, the room was nicely separated and decorated with a modern Italian and luxurious feel. Tables were draped in crisp white linens and crystal wine glasses on the table. Our waiter took and chilled our white wine immediately and poured throughout the dinner without our glasses ever going empty. As others have noted, the owner, Allen, makes his rounds to each table and personally serves you as well. He even gave us a complimentary appetizer of the ricotta gnocchi which I can declare was the very best gnocchi I ever had. Instead of potato, it is delicately made of ricotta cheese. Just genius! The crispy yet chewy bread was fresh out of the oven served with a rosemary olive oil. No need for us to order the bruschetta which was offered at a cost however we saw another table have it and it looked fresh and delicious. We chose the sausage and spicy pepper appetizer to share. Share they did! It came out on two plates for us. That is a bonus for me when dining out and sharing a plate. The sausage was crisp yet juicy with layered hot peppers and grilled onions. It was quite tasty. For the main course, I ordered the snapper and my companion ordered the short rib. I could go on and on about the snapper. It was simply one of the best fish dishes I ever had! It came out with the skin on and at first, I was afraid to try it. I am not one to eat the skin of the fish but in this case, it was the best part of the dish! There was so much flavor and the fish was so moist. It was accompanied by a ratatouille and perfectly cooked. On the side were seasoned string beans along with roasted fingerling potatoes. Perfection.. see photo posted. The short rib was boneless with a lot of meat and very little fat. It was tender and quite delicious. It had the same accompaniments as my fish did. We did not have any room for dessert this time. Maybe next time we may try the 4 course tasting menu. That was priced at $70pp and included one of my favorite seasonal pasta dishes which is pumpkin ravioli. Overall, we were quite pleased with our dinner which totaled around $70 for both of us. We also enjoyed the special VIP treatment by the owner who's father, by the way, owns Da Filippos in Somerville. Go here. The owner is great, very welcoming and very attentive! Oh and it's a byo, which is great! For appetizers, I ordered the gnocchi and speck and my husband ordered the burrata e crudo. Both were so flavorful and delicious, I basically licked my plate when I was done! For entrees, I ordered the pork saltimbocca and my husband ordered the rigatoni. Again, both flavorful and we completely finished our meals. Dessert, if you like creme brûlée you must order it, you can see the vanilla beans in the creme. Great place! Greeted as soon as we walked in door. Small place (8 tables) and a BYOB. While they have a table that can seat 6-8, this is a date night place. The food is outstanding. Service was great. Staff attentive and constantly coming over to pour more wine. But if you want to go, plan ahead. This is a very small restaurant, which is probably the reason why reservations are not easy to make. The two tables next to the entrance are the less desirable ones and not so comfortable. There are two big windows facing Mine Brook Road, but they are frosted glass, which is something that makes this place even smaller and gave me the impression I was having dinner inside a fish tank. Now to the food. I made a mistake and I ordered a filet mignon. This is an Italian place so obviously that was the worst choice I could have made and indeed it was. I was so distracted by the people waiting next to me and by the frosted glass windows getting fogged that I don't even remember the rest. Shrimp dish was tasty but ruined from over cooked shrimp. Haddock un edible for $38 Mediterranean sea bass was average not great. Crème brûlée average. What a lovely quaint dining experience This little treasure is an eight table fine dining experience- did I mention dining here is an experience! The ambience is notable with the candle lit tables and the dim lighting playing off the elegant copper tiled ceiling. The wait staff know their job and do it well. The food is understated and not overly seasoned or overly cooked- it was done just right. We were just four friends who spent 3 1/2 hours dining and enjoying a wonderful meal. My 84 year old aunt was dining with us who has hearing issues and we were told by the staff we were too loud. I thought the server was rude given the circumstances of my aunt. Not a fan of bruchetta, I became a convert once theirs was served.....a warm dish of crusty homemade bread, thick tomato slices and herbs. The menu was somewhat streamlined due to covid however we were able to choose items that came to the table quite hot and excellent tasting. A really nice experience was had tonight at this restaurant. The decor is charming, the service was attentive, not overwhelming, and my first visit here included some serious highlights. The gnocchi! Get the gnocchi. Stuffed with ricotta, in a buttery sauce with corn. You might want to order two of these dishes. Wish I had . As others mentioned, the bruschetta is delicious. The bread is fantastic. The main entree (baked Cod with caper berries) was good. Pretty strong salt flavor unfortunately , however the fish was very fresh, and cooked nicely. Wouldn't order that particular dish again, however glad I indulged. The menu has numerous intriguing sounding dishes, and it is evident that this restaurant strives for excellence. In my opinion, they hit VERY close to home on that mission. Sadly, I saw no desserts which included or involved chocolate. Run of the mill options (sorbet, brûlée with fresh fruit, etc), but overall? My husband and I stumbled on Sette for lunch on a recent visit to Bernardsville. We enjoyed every detail to our experience. The service was excellent! The waiter brought out the house bruschetta which was so delicious. He then brought us a complimentary small plate of thin sliced red beets with capers and red onion which was so good. We ordered the Organica salad which was a perfect size for one person. It was fresh and light. I ordered the Pennette ala Norma (penne with Sicilian eggplant) which was again so delicious. My husband had the gnocchi with corn and butter sauce. It was also amazing. We finished with 2 cappuccino's and a complimentary plate of almond biscotti-- perfecto! Thanks, Yelp! We found this restaurant as we were zipping along the highway from upstate New York to Philadelphia and needed a place to have lunch. This popped up and finding it one of the very best reviewed restaurants in the area we took the next exit and drove the 4 miles (about 10 minutes) to reach it. (There was no charge for the adjacent street parking.) Based on the reviews here, its environment, the service, and of course, the quality of the food, this is definitely a higher tier Italian restaurant. My spouse, who spent the first half of his childhood in Sicily said that the only thing that would have made it more authentic would be sitting in Italy. Slightly pricey $12 appetizers (antipasti), $18 pasta (primi), and $24 entrées (secondi), everything was very thoughtfully and well prepared. The service was personal, caring and attentive without being intrusive. This is clearly a restaurant and an owner who cares about his customers, the setting and environment and, most importantly, the food he serves. My favorite restaurant. It's intimate as there are only a few tables. When I make my reservations on Open Table, I request Chicken Francais, which is not on the menu. Everything was delicious, the service excellent, the atmosphere lovely. I adore the copper ceiling, the crisp white linens and juuust the right amount of lighting. Having said that, since this is a highly rated establishment, which, I want to believe, is willing to receive constructive criticism for the sake of reflection and growth, here are my humble opinions I'd like to share. The menu we were presented with, entitled "Spring Menu 2019", include so many items other reviewers have mentioned throughout the years, which in itself would be fine, but since it is called "spring" menu, I wish to see uniquely spring flavors and seasonal ingredients, such as lamb, asparagus, new potatoes, bitter greens and spring herbs. Not the "autumn herbs" the chicken dish is prepared with. Not the very heavy (though still delicious) caramelized Vidalia onion soufflé. Maybe save the salad with Anjou pear for fall or winter. Same goes for the beets appetizer. I say this especially because our server specifically informed us there are no specials. So many reviewers have raved about the bruschetta. They were yummy indeed. Still, I can make this at home. You can make this at home. I'd not order these, especially for $8, and save room for better things to come. And how they are offered is a bit sketchy, I must say. While you're looking at the menu, the server suggests "maybe start with some bruschetta?" Who'd say no? (Bruschetta is NOT on the menu, but NOT free, which we kinda knew, but...) The homemade bread is quite good, but it was only offered once. I was hoping for more so I could mop up the delicious sauce, but it was taken away while I was distracted. I could have asked, but that should not be my responsibility, and a restaurant should WANT their diners to mop up the sauce, if they take pride in what they serve. Overall, I appreciate the tight menu that has nothing to do with your standard American "Italian" fare (insalata Caprese, chicken parmigiana, etc), but it still leaves a bit to be desired in the surprise element department. A very easy fix: get a larger waste can in the bathroom. It was overflowing. Also paper towels were all gone, which I found in the drawer and restocked myself. They did change the silverware between courses. A past reviewer commented that they didn't. Again, id like to stress that it is a lovely place, all things considered. I may have left a higher mark if I hadn't read all the raving reviews, but with such reviews, and $$$ price tag, come high expectations. read more

When you enter this small quaint restaurant you are greeted by the owner who offers to take your coats, open you BYOB wine and escorted you to your seat. The menu changes nightly or weekly! They will pour your wine and walk you through all the specials and give recommendations. We did start off with their famous Bruschetta that everyone raves about on line. They describe it as warm and tasty. I'd say more like hard with old tomato and garlic all over the top. it wasn't bad but can make better at home. Second course we all loved... We had Gnocchi...So good. Prosciutto with fig, mint and parmesan cheese. Third course we all ordered separate. My wife had the La Tagliata Petite Filet with cream Truffle which was described by her as being very taste with so many flavors. I had the Monk Fish and it wasn't bad just not what I expected. The sauce selected did not complement the white fish. Our friends had pasta dishes and were pleased with their meal and would consider returning. When we were finished we waited 1 full hour trying to get the owners and wait staff attention to get the bill. Seriously... 1 hour. They were so busy doing nothing and wouldn't fill up our waters and disappeared. This was very frustrating and showed little respect by the owner who started off so good. I probably wouldn't return but I think the rest of my group would go back in 6 - 9 months. When someone says 6-9 months that means never in my books. Its worth going once... good luck. read more

I was back in the area again for work and stopped in to my favorite restaurant in the area. Glad I stopped in. The food is always worth the visit, but I just love it when Allan asks, "Do you want me to just cook for you?" Like he has to ask...of course I do. First Course: Bruschetta - Nice and warm, very tasty. Second Course: Proscuitto, soft mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, arugula and basil Third Course: Ricotta Gnocci - Several large, square gnocchi in a butter/wine sauce, with cherry tomatoes and grapes. I really enjoyed the ricotta flavor. Main Course: Pork Saltimbocca to pair with my BYOB Zinfandel - Saltimbocca literally means "jumps in the mouth" and I assure you it did. This was probably the best dish Allan has ever served me, and that says a lot. I took the first bite and was uttering expletives, it was so good. Seriously. No hyperbole. So good! Dessert: Lemon Gelato - Very good, refreshing It was great to see Allan again, even if it means time away from his family. I had missed him on the last couple of visits, so it was good to catch up. We went to this restaurant with a costco gift card. It was our anniversary dinner. The seating was very private and intimate which we liked. The service was great. I ordered the chef's tasting menu for $ 60 and boy it was like 'Foodgasm' !!! I got a prosciutto, goat cheese salad to start with. The second course was ricotta stuffed gnocchi which I have no words for... I ordered red snapper for main course which was very fresh and well seasoned. My dessert was profiterole which was amazing too. My husband went with short ribs which was juicy, succulent and very flavorful.
