It is a very small place (with a reflective metal ceiling) with a friendly enough staff. The menu is very small, with about five pastas and eight other entrees. We got the veal with crimini mushrooms and Gorgonzola, wrapped codfish and as an appetizer a split order of pasta Bolognese. Each was fine, but unexceptional. read more

Been dozens of times and have watched Chef Alan Russo's cooking evolve from very good to great as he dialed in the seasonal menus over the years. I take visiting winemakers from Italy there and they feel like they are right at home. I've done a bunch of food and wine dinners with Oddero, Emidio Pepe and many more top Italian wineries and Alan's fine touch in the kitchen is always spot on. If you haven't been, go!! Bring your favorite Italian whites and reds and settle in for a treat. Often we just put ourselves in Alan's hands and have him cook several courses of whatever inspires him. A great way to experience the restaurant if you have a little time. Best bruschetta you'll have anywhere, and many more treats and specialties of the house. Beautiful decor with gold ceilings and very small with only about 8 tables. The owner shook our hands as we settled down. All the waiters and the owner talked in this very hushed, soft, almost whispery voice. I wonder if it was to add to the atmosphere or if it was a natural thing. We were offered sparkling water, tap water, other things. Ordered a gnocchi antipasti - gnocchi wading in light broth. I almost cried, it was so good. Also was offered a bruschetta - incredibly fresh tomato and basil, freshly baked bread. Even the olive oil for second type of bread was incredible, it was so gentle and clean. Ordered tagliatelle which was pretty good, but not amazing. I maybe should have ordered risotto. Ordered dessert - cream puffs, which was covered with dark chocolate sauce and topped with candied orange zest and a sprig of mint. My boyfriend and I went to Sette last night for my birthday dinner. We were slightly late, but we were seated upon entering. The place is pretty small, but it's romantic and quiet and the service is great! Our waitress had just started only a couple of days prior, but she did a wonderful job! After receiving the house made bruschetta, which was warm, we were greeted by the head chef. He's a delight, and was able to help with any questions on the menu we had. My boyfriend started with the salad, which was the perfect size with several types of lettuce and a light citrus dressing. He had the mussels for his appetizer, and I was brave enough to try one for the first time. They were fabulous, it was a nice cream sauce and the mussel melted in your mouth! He had the red snapper for dinner, which was also excellent. I had the risotto special for appetizer and it was smooth and creamy and perfectly cooked. For dinner I had the shrimp pasta, which was the highlight of my night! Shrimp were perfectly cooked, the pasta was fresh, and the sauce was slightly creamy without being heavy. Between each course, a fresh roll was brought out, and they were used to sop up the remaining sauce! During the dinner, my birthday was mentioned and I was surprised with profiteroles with fresh chocolate sauce and a candle. Ate here for dinner one evening during the weekend of May 22nd, 2010 and was terribly disappointed. For a starter, our table had the bruschetta plate which was an adequate size for four people. The tomatoes were tasteless and bread was heavily soaked in oil. I ordered the chicken with mushrooms in wine sauce for my main ($20), and the chicken was terribly tough -- a poor quality piece of chicken. The sauce was tasty though but not even close to make up for the poor quality chicken. For dessert, I had the profiteroles ($8) and the portion was extremely small -- three VERY small profiteroles, a drizzle of chocolate sauce on top, and a quarter slice of strawberry. The taste of the dessert was good (the chocolate sauce could have been better) but portion was a joke. There is only seating for about 30 in this place and the four-person tables are undersized in order to accommodate for the very small size of the restaurant. This place is not quaint and comfortable as I expected but cramped and poorly shaped; half the tables are on one size of the small entrance, half are on the other side. I love to stop by this place for lunch and I have had many business dinners here as well. I am especially a fan of the Gnocchi, the Bruschetta, the Polipetti alla Luciana, and the Pork Scaloppini. Allan is always very friendly and makes the whole family feel at home and it really fine dining. Small intimate restaurant with personalized service from the owner. Food was excellent..we had short ribs, red snappwr and monk fish. All perfectly presented and not overly "sauced. Very disappointing. My cod was tasteless, and the piece was the size a toddler would finish!!! The pork medallions were not medallions at all and full of grizzle. As a small, fine dining restaurant Sette fits the Bernardsville atmosphere, however it is pricey for the quality. The service is fantastic and attentive, and the smaller size of the restaurant results in a quaint dining experience. We ordered the bruschetta to start which was superb. As for the entrees, we ordered the prime rib, pancetta, and sea bass. The prime rib was fantastic, but the pancetta was on the dryer side and a tad salty. The cast iron seared sea bass was great, but the menu said it was to be served with ratatouille but instead was served with sliced tomatoes, which was a definite disappointment and the dish definitely needed more flavor since the sea bass was boring on its own. Additionally, all the entrees were served with sautéed spinach and cooked baby carrots, and for a fine dining experience I would at least expect fresh peeled carrots. The meal was overall ordinary, and they could improve on some of the smaller details.You will be paying for the extroirdanry service and atmosphere, but expect it to be overpriced for the quality of the food. read more

After reading the reviews from others my wife and I decided to try Sette Cucina. Either my wife and I have the worst taste buds or these people reviewing do not know what good food tastes like. The place is tiny and a bring your own. Both are fine with us. We are foodies and decor and ambiance although important definitely take a back seat to food and service. We ordered the bruschetta to start off with. Let's say that this was the best thing we had. It was good. We than had this caserrole of pasta that i can only explain as meat lasagna formed in a small round casserole dish, baked and served. It was a silly and unappealing appetizer. The cold antipasto was fair with just average quality proscuitto and sopressato. The fresh mozzerella was a poor example of what melt in your mouth creamy buffalo mozzerella should be. This was hard and flavorless. On to the entrees. We had a pork tenderloin rolled and stuffed with fontina cheese and whatever else. It was brutal. Overcooked, tough and without a hint of the fontina cheese. This could have been the worst entree I have had in a restaurant in quite some time. We opted for a shells with sausage in a light tomato beefy stock. This was edible as the sausage was very good. the shells (which in my opinion should not be on a restaurant menu with so many other fine pasta choices). However to spend 24 dollars on a pasta one would expect it to be fresh pasta. I believe this could have been Ronzoni. The service was odd. I cannot say it wasn't good service moreover I will say the service was well....around. The waitress came over only to tell us there were no specials at all. She also came originally to give us the menus and say hello in Italian. She came to check on us only during the entrees and did take off the pork dish from the bill. All in all this is the most overrated overpriced restaurant. Do yourselves a favor, spend a little more and go down the road to Due Terre Enoteca. read more
