I know, I know...."WTF dude, you're NOT giving them a one star rating???" Yes, but hear me out. I'm not sure that I've heard of any HOA company that anyone has been absolutely 100% thrilled with, so the playing field is already pretty low in that respect. However it's all about the people you interact with, AND how you treat these people. A lot of homeowners go into any exchange with an HOA company with a chip on their shoulder, and it's easy to forget that the folks on the receiving end of this are also human. So. As you read this, you actually might start to wonder why I gave only four stars and not five, and the reason for that is because Sequoia has been a little slow to catch up to the digital age: it took a loooong time for them to stop sending those ridiculous paper vouchers for us to make our dues payments and to also not charge extra fees for taking online payments, so I had to administer a ding for that. Also, they are a bit stringent on their "inspections" - sending nastygrams to people for putting their trash out early because they're going out of town the next day? C'mon, that is NOT going to reduce property value. But I digress... The good part of all this? Our neighborhood's rep, Shannon Cook. Shannon is definitely no dummy, so while I wince to say it I am sure she knows she's probably reviled by some members of our neighborhood just for the very nature of the job she has to do. But what those folks don't know or appreciate is just how well she does it. Several years ago I unwittingly (read: dumbly) volunteered to serve a 3-year stint on the board of directors for our HOA, and in doing so I got a front-row seat to seeing all the things that Shannon does for our community on behalf of Sequoia. She is extremely methodical, very organized, and - as I alluded to earlier - sharp as a tack. Having served that term on the board I came to understand and appreciate just how ignorant, entitled, and downright rude some of my fellow neighbors are. And while the board I served with were on the receiving end of some of that ire, Shannon took the brunt of it....with the patience of a f*#@ing saint. Since then, when listening to some of my neighbors complain about their interactions with Shannon, I realize that in the vast majority of the cases they are entering into those exchanges already in the wrong. So when she responds to them with the facts and the established rules/bylaws, she's immediately the enemy. It's a no-win. What a lot of my neighbors don't see is how tirelessly she works at this job. It is NOT a 9-to-5 job, and she is at every single evening HOA meeting, coming to the neighborhood on weekends to meet with contractors, and responding to communications from community members and her colleagues well outside of normal business hours. Witnessing all this for quite some time and seeing how much time she puts into our neighborhood, I was absolutely floored to find out that our neighborhood IS NOT THE ONLY ONE SHE MANAGES. She is keeping up this same level of service for other neighborhoods as well, so I have no clue when this woman sleeps. So five stars for Shannon acting on behalf of Sequoia, but the caveats from the Sequoia company I called out above make it four. read more

Very disappointed in their customer service. I needed a clarification during a very stressful time when I was getting ready to sell my house. There was an outstanding balance on my HOA acccount that had to be settled before I could go to closing. I called and left a message twice looking for a clarification for this charge. Jaimie Trevethan is my HOA community manager, have called multiple times and always leave a message with someone saying that they will let her know to call me back. I never get a phone call, when attempting to email her, the email automatically gets rejected. I sent in 2 checks for my HOA dues, and they have not been cashed. Then they decide to send me a letter saying that my account will go to collections. The best part is that letter wasn't even mailed, I just got a random lady coming to my front door and dropping it off (AFTER the day it says they are sending it to collections). If you live in a neighborhood that is managed by this company, run and run fast. read more

Very bad customer service with a racialist community manager! Here is my story : On Aug 23rd 2023, I had an appoinment at 9am with the office staff to tour around the venue for my baby's birthday party. I showed up at 8:55am and wait till 9:20am and no one showed up neither open the community. I also didnt receive any calls/emails from them for cancellation as well. Since its very unprofessional the way they worked. I have emailed to the manager - her name is Melina Barry . She tried to make another appointment for me on Aug 24th at 8:45am ( which is earlier 15mins). Then the date came. She showed up and didnt even greeting me or even say "hi". She jumped in and yell to me that my complain email makes her angry, etc. She also said that they dont do service here so that she dont have to give me the service standard! There are many other things she yells to me as Im the one who make this mistake. ( which is very racist attitude). And then she said that she just works for Sequioa Management company not the residents living here. Wow! She also mention her age ( over 50 years old) to mean that we are young and cant challenge her. And then she challenge me to complain it to the community group and the board meeting as well etc. I saw some other complain about her attitude on the google review couple years ago too. read more

I've run companies, sold houses for top dollar, and helped create HOA/COA's. Run from this management company. We sold our house years ago because of these fools (and set a record price doing so). The good reviews are likely fake or haven't really dealt with them and nasty underbelly this company is, or possibly the "used few" treated likely royalty (board members or people that can hurt/help them). One of the main people there is definitely a rotten apple; -lazy, spitedul, vindictive, incompetent fits well-. So unfortunately, it doesnt matter if others seem to be nice and do their best to cover for these jerks. He may think he's smart and important, he's more like a lazy cowering suckup scumbag. I read a couple other reviews, evidently, they treat board members well (their bread and butter) and don't keep up with normal property management things, being organized, keeping proper track of dues, fees, and doing their contracted duties including accurately and properly documenting required inspections and updating violations and removing them when fixed (instead of harassing people needlessly over thing already repaired years before). I talked with my neighbors also; these people seem to invent HOA rules, policies, and bylaws to support their BS. Of course they cant provide the specifics or have to call you back (and dont) when asked for the violations. It makes sense when they likely don't have them, keep bad records, or made them up. They also invent charges and fake fees and give false reasons to tow vehicles. While able to prove two incompetent illegal tows (Fairfax Towing documented their normal idiocy with pictures and re orded statements), they still wasted so much time and energy, short of suing them, it wasnt worth the $400! You'll have to comply even when their complaint is BS, solved years ago, or so non-specific you can't comply and yet your house is in the top 10% of maintained properties. read more

I've worked with Sequoia Mgmt for over 9 years in my current neighborhood. Shannon Cook is our HOA property manager and has been great to work with! I joined one of our committees and eventually joined the HOA Board. She has a wealth of knowledge and contacts to help guide us through decisions. Over the past 2-3 years, we will work together to come up with solutions whether it's budgeting, future/ongoing planning or dealing with legal issues. I appreciate the service Sequoia provides, including reviews of their employees. I can rely upon Shannon and Sequoia to do the legwork, scheduling and follow up we cannot do as volunteers. What's nice is that Sequoia tailors their service to the size of our HOA and provides insight to how other HOAs handle similar situations. They act as the hub or bridge between vendors/bidders, the residents, committees, local government (e.g., County Development and Water), legal, etc. I can always count on Sequoia to help out HOA run. I really appreciate their service and would highly recommend to HOAs looking for personal attention and awareness of laws. Homeowners Associations (HOA) are something that you either love 'em or you hate 'em. Being on a HOA board of directors isn't easy. Having a partner like Sequoia Management makes the process so much easier. I was on a board of directors of 700 homes off and on for more than 10 years, including stints as the president. Throughout that time, Sequoia was our management company. I found that they were knowledgeable of HOA law and best practices, were forthcoming with examples of how to do things. They had a wide variety of industry partners to recommend for the HOA activities we needed. And, they were always transparent with regarding bills and even mistakes that they made from time to time. I don't know that you could ask for anything more. Every 3 years we had to do a competition and look for other management companies. Each time we evaluated the other companies, Sequoia came out on top due to their pricing and the local staff that support our community. I'd highly recommend them. read more

A note was left on our door yesterday stating that a company would be coming to paint and seal the parking lot. They made sure to tell us that our vehicles must be moved by 7 am or be towed. I had no problem with that. Our cars were moved by 6:15. Although they made sure to put the tow company's number on the note, they failed to mention that parking would not be available in the evening. I need to know why Sequoia feels like that wasn't an important piece of information. Why did I have to find out when I arrived home from work? I would call the property manager but he is too busy to respond. As usual. My family has been here for 13 years. We are never late with our payment, but the fact that this HOA is terribly mismanaged can no longer be ignored. read more

The staff at Sequoia Management responded quickly to meeting me to help me resolve a very stressful situation I had with a builder/contractor I hired to build a porch for me. Thankfully, my application for structural change had not been approved yet because Sequoia Management was doing their appropriate due diligence and continuing to ask them to send in the necessary information for approval. In the end, the final disapproval letter provided by Sequoia Management saved me from continuing to work with these horrible builders who threatened me with legal action despite a pending HOA application. This management company along with the East Stratford HOA has been complicit in squatting on broken systems in the community. They're more concerned about kids on the tennis courts than real issues that affect homeowners. I've been towed from my community 4 times in the past 6 years. Four times too many and they just squat on old systems. Excuse after excuse. I recommended action back in 2014 for another type of system, and then again after my 4th towing incident this year when I had computer printing issues back in March at the peak of the COVID-19 shutdown. I was towed even with a pass that I had on file, just couldn't print. The HOA and this management company lacked the determination and decency to do ANYTHING about their current system. In fact, afterr calling Parking Boss and learning that Sequoia along with my HOA hadn't even inquired about updating their parking system in 8 years, I arranged a "slam-dunk" deal for them to fix the problem and go all virtual. The only responses were lies and excuses as to why they couldn't fix the problem. Where there's a will, there's a way right? Although this management company is very professional to talk to, it lacks the drive to make communities centered around the homeowner's needs and comfort. They, and the Homeowners' Associations that they drive are complacent and satisfied with broken systems that affect homeowners negatively at inopportune times. My hoa was fortunate to have Sequoia Management years ago until a new Board changed. We had Sequoia for years and they were the best we ever had. Agent new the laws and our documents and gave the Board solid guidance. We have suffered through several other mgmt companies that will take years to stablize. Well I would add to what has been said over and over again the reviews below, but I don't have the energy. This company is an absolute waste of time and money. Why we pay dues I have no idea. But good luck getting their attention when you need something. I purchased a home two years ago in a neighborhood they "manage" and my neighbors and I all agree that it has become run down under their watch. And I'm not talking about the homes, I'm taking about the common areas, grass, playgrounds, etc. I would not have purchase a home in my neighborhood had it looked like this two years past. Thankfully I have been lucky enough to stop a friend who is on a community board from hiring them. He asked my opinion as I have lived all over the country and I was happy to tell him not to hire this awful company. I would suggest reading one of the reviews that "did not make the cut". It is an insightful view on how to combat these companies and hit them where it hurts, their pocketbook. Update: Still absolute morons. The three homes across from me are rentals, consistently have bags of garbage out on the curb, one has no lawn whatsoever just dirt patches, and one's fence is completely fallen down, yet I receive a letter saying I need to repair MY LAWN. For the record, I have by far the best looking yard in the neighborhood, yet these complete morons send me the letter about a patchy yard. In my 16 years of being a resident and homeowner, our HOA situation was never stressful or tense until Sequoia's management. Our community suffered a disastrous and costly takeover by Sequoia, including unprofessional conduct at Board Meetings, inaccurate notices sent out, many expensive and unnecessary new expenditures, and pages of new added regulations which are a cut-and-paste job from communities with major differences from ours. The unprofessional Seqouia representative repeatedly interrupts community members during our open forum, repeatedly interrupts and flatly contradicts and dictates to the HOA Board despite not having a vote, admitted allowing an extra privilege to board members (taking their word on complaints of "violations" w/no investigation) while admitting she shouldn't, and stamped out an attempt to let community members contact the Board directly rather then having to go through Sequoia Management. Sequoia didn't timely provide accurate financial reports and updated bids for the meeting, yet wasn't apologetic. Sequoia's aggressive, burdensome, and unneighborly focus on violations earns a lot of billable hours for themselves while multiplying the strain on people who actually live here. Hugely expanded new community "standards" (which do not reflect the existing properties' look) and added requirements for homeowners mean a majority of long-term homeowners (many of whom are elderly or disabled) in our small neighborhood of older homes are suddenly "in violation" of the seismic, abruptly announced changes "recommended" by Sequoia. Sequoia set their fees associated with a resale at the maximum allowed by Virginia's new law and has forced all communications to go through them when previously, simple requests were handled for free by local volunteers or the pool lifeguards. Sequoia also proposed fining owners for minor violations, something our neighborhood has never done. Expensive, hostile to those who live here, and unprofessional, Sequoia Management is an outsider management company without compassion -- a real downgrade for our neighborhood. read more

Whoever they send out for property inspections is either blind or stupid. They will also list the date of an inspection and issue a notice weeks or months after the fact. For example, the first notice for overgrown grass comes. I end up mowing a day after they have inspected my property but get a letter issued weeks after saying my grass needs to be mowed. THANKS! I 100% agree with the previous comment. It is one thing to keep a neighborhood looking nice. I will be the first to promote keeping yards pristine and tacky junk out of front yards but theses people are unbelievable. What is with the crazy photos. So, they can apparently "see" a 2 foot recycling bin that is stored behind a 4 foot wall so easily that they have to walk behind my porch to take a picture. Or should I complain about the bags they took a picture of on my porch clearly labeled Red Cross Donation they they claimed were recycling stored now on my front porch ... 2nd warning. Yup those two things are totally related. Yet somehow they "overlooked" the two dead trees for 4 years I complained about or the constant foot traffic between my house that lead to my car being broken into. What does Sequoia do? Build really expensive stairs of course to help those lil burglars out. OH and blow hundreds or thousands of dollars on a new over the top landscaping plan that was way over budget. Our home was written up for mold, on the right side of our home in May 2021. I sent a letter to Jen, about my circumstances, and was given to July 31, 2021 to clean off our mold. Since my husband passed away, I have been trying to take care for our home to make him proud. With my own medical issues, I wasn't able to complete our mold removal, within Sequoia's deadline. After reading the 27 negative reviews on Google and now the 13 negative reviews on Yelp, it begs the question why we do not get together and seek relief from wasting our Membership Dues on Sequoia Management. The same names associated with this company keep popping up, time after time, on both of these review websites. After reading all the 40 reviews, I can see that I am not alone concerning Sequoia Property Management. When they state that it is "Your Board" and not them, that run the HOA, they should also state that most HOA Boards look to their Property Management Companies for guidance concerning most issues. The Members of STRATFORD CONDOMINIUM UNIT OWNERS ASSOCIATION, have paid Sequoia Property Management close to $500,000.00 in the past five years and their customer service is exhaustively evasive as well as misleading. Even when we address our HOA Board via their e-mail address, we always get the response from Sequoia Property Management. Our HOA Board is just as deceptive as Sequoia Property Management. Maybe that is where they learned it from. We have made repeated request to view our documents concerning our HOA, under the authority of the Virginia Condominium Act section § 55-79.74:1. Books, minutes and records; inspection. Sequoia Property Management has stalled our request, every step of the way. Please understand that this is a tactic used by some HOAs and Property Management Companies, to keep the Association Members, from having access to information they pay for, via their own dues. This is just one of many examples. It is our experience that Sequoia Property Management is using the tactics mentioned above, or, they are simply uneducated in what the Virginia State Law requires them to do. In either case, we now feel that our only recourse is to seek relief from the Prince William County Courts, concerning their unwillingness to perform, what 300 Unit Owners are paying them to do. As many have stated that they work for the "HOA Board" and not the community, this is only correct if you as a Member, allow them to do this. I have to wonder, "why would I buy a product or use a service that had such a low rating out of 40 reviews"? Personally, I would not! Leaving sincere reviews is often difficult for a service such as a property management company. Their job is to regulate groups of individuals, and as such they must be the bad guys sometimes. In the case of Sequoia, I understand the frustrations of some of the prior reviews, but I disagree that they are inept or failing as professionals. Like many owners have stated, Sequoia are vigilant with assessing violations. My belief is that this should be expected with any management company. Additionally, I haven't found Sequoia to be difficult to contact or work with. As with any issue that requires correspondence, email is usually the best method, and my community manager - Lisa McBride - has always been responsive. My intent was to leave an honest review rather than an emotional response. Of course it's no fun to pay increasing dues, receive violation notices, etc. but this is the nature of the business. Sequoia certainly does not deserve a 1 star rating, and based on what should be expected from a company tasked with enforcing rules in a community with standards, I feel they do their jobs competently and honestly. read more

I have to agree with the poor reviews already given and wish that we had seen them prior to hiring them. I thought we did our homework but every year we have them, our community suffers. Our common areas have not been maintained or are not consistently maintained, they are not responsive to community members and they do not help the Board communicate with community members. They have advised or enabled the Board to carry out actions that either violate existing policies or side step them. I would give negative point if I can! This company is absolutely incompetent and irresponsible, totally waste of time and money. I purchased a home two years ago, somehow they put my previous address as my mailing address even though I signed up my account online and input the correct email and home address. They sent the HOA fee to my old address, which of course I did not receive. They did not even bother to email me or call me or try my home address. Instead, they send the invoice to the debt collector, of course with the old mailing address. Again, I did not receive any letter from the debt collector due to the wrong address. Without trying to call me or email me, they simply placed a lien on my property. Only after I found out my online account is not working, I realized something went wrong. About their services, I don't really know why we have to pay HOA fee at all. We have to pay trash collection fee separately ourselves, and I don't see anything in the neighborhood was taken care of. All they do is collecting fees and screwing people up. Don't hire them if you are on a community board. read more

Also, if you are in good terms with nobodies in board of directors, you're untouchable and will never heard a peep from them.
