I had a really enjoyable experience here and would absolutely come back. The Herbaceous Calamari was the standout of the meal--perfectly cooked with excellent consistency and flavor. A squeeze of fresh lemon took it to the next level, and while sauces were included, they honestly weren't necessary because the calamari held its own so well. The fried pickles were good overall, though I think the batch I received may have been slightly overcooked. There were a few bites that felt harder than expected texture-wise. Still tasty, just not quite perfect. To drink, I had the Lovely Lady Hazy IPA, which hit exactly what I look for in a hazy: balanced bitterness with a bright citrus pop that really came through. Easily a great choice if you're into hazies. The decor deserves a mention on its own--the space has a cozy log cabin-in-the-forest vibe that feels warm and inviting without being overdone. The entire restaurant and bar area were clean and neat, and the restrooms were spotless and well maintained, which I always appreciate. Our server, Logan (who I believe may also be a manager), was super friendly, welcoming, and accommodating, which made the experience even better. Parking was another big plus--there's a side parking lot with plenty of space, which is rare and extremely convenient for a downtown location where street parking is usually a hassle. One thing to note: there's new ownership, and if you have gift cards from the previous owner, only the GM can approve their use. Unfortunately, he wasn't there during our visit, so I couldn't use mine. That said, it didn't sour the experience. Overall, great food, great beer, friendly service, and a comfortable atmosphere. So, wayyyy back (I see my last review for this place was in 2008) my impression was that Sequoia (NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH Tioga-Sequoia downtown, which we go to all the damn time) had "good beer and completely forgettable food." And honestly we hadn't gone back in quite some time, but recently we met our friends here for dinner before a show at the Tower Theater, and it was a convenient place to meet up. Also, we were all aware that it had closed down and reopened recently, so I was curious: Would it now be "good beer and better food"? Sadly, it was "worse beer and bad food." And the rest of the experience wasn't all that great either. So, the first problem was: We had a reservation because we thought a lot of people might have the same good idea to go to dinner right before the show next door. And the good news was, it was lively but not horribly crowded, so we probably didn't need a reservation. And yet we were seated at probably the WORST imaginable table: with two of our party of four WEDGED up against the server's station. No, none of us is oversized -- any normal-size human would have been wedged in this situation, and we spent the whole time uncomfortably close to one server or another, apologizing and saying excuse me, and we were like millimeters from these people's butts intermittently and yet constantly. It was bizarre. And yes, in retrospect I should have just asked for us to be moved to another table, because the seating arrangements were weird AF, especially if you have a reservation and there are other tables open. But I have a "thing" about not being an entitled customer who asks to be moved to another table especially because I've worked in restaurants before, and I know it kind of messes things up -- and I don't want to be "THAT jerky customer." But then it was oddly uncomfortable and I don't know what they think they're doing seating anyone at that table. The server seemed definitely _not_ glad to be there. I get it -- who wants to be at work on a Friday night? But...he just seemed tired out by our very minimal questions like, how's the meatloaf? or what beer do you recommend? (after being told the beer we want is unavailable). We weren't, you know, grilling him at length about ingredients or allergens -- these were just brief normal questions. And, despite the fact that he was about two inches away a lot of the time, it was hard to get his attention. Very hard. My beer was flat. Flat. I wish I'd asked for another beer, but it was already such a downer of a time, and it was so hard to get this unhappy guy's attention that I didn't want to "bother" him with another pesky request. And the food was just crappy. The club sandwich was unpleasant to eat -- how do you mess up a club sandwich, people? The bacon and pickles were overpowering (and I like bacon and pickles!) and it was just overly tough to chew. I can't remember ever disliking a club sandwich, anywhere, which is specifically why I ordered it here. Keep it simple, right, if you know the food is probably not the best? And my husband and one of our friends got the disappointing meatloaf special. I forget what our other friend ordered, or whether she liked it. Overall, I would not go back, even if it was very convenient to go there. What a drag. I guess I'm giving two stars because it was convenient to go to the show after, and it was nice to visit with our friends. And the ambiance (other than the location of our crappy table) seemed cozy. But the food and drinks and service -- and the location of our particular table -- were all awful. read more

I had to come back after the re opening, I have to say i wasnt happy with the food. It was not the same as it was and honestly thats why I came back. Ordered the sweet potato fries and they did not taste like sweet potatoes. One of my favorite salads was on the menu but the flavor wasn't there. The fish and chips were decent but again not the taste for me!!! The band set up was in a corner ,not enjoyable they need go back to the old set up!! read more

First time being back after reopening. The inside still looks the same and great. Plenty of seating. I went on a Sunday and they had a good amount of guests but not a lot of workers that day. It took a bit to get seated but our server afterwards was great at checking in even though he clearly had too many tables for just himself to handle. The menu is smaller and much more streamlined. Less overwhelming as before but still options for everyone. My fish and chips were delicious and huge. read more

Stopped in for a foggy evening adult beverages with calamari appetizer. Justin was on point with the "everything is special" menu. Peter was the server with the customer service focus on delivery & presentation of our drinks & food. The atmosphere is always enjoyable with the private booths, the open bar& the many television monitors. The food here is sooooo good! The burger was cooked perfectly and the fries were hands down the best I've ever had. I ordered the quesadilla without chicken but with veggies instead and they were happy to accommodate my request. The quesadilla with thier homemade salsa...fabulous! Customer service was exceptional. This was our first time back since they reopened. We had mixed feelings. We always come to watch/listen to live music. They have moved the band to the room adjacent to the main area, which limits the number of people that can see them. We imagine there will be nights that there are no seats back there and we will be forced to listen from the main bar area. On the plus side, the staff and drinks are as good as ever. read more

Came here for dinner on a Wednesday. It was not too crowded. We ordered fried pickles, fish and chips, and the mandarin chicken salad. Everything was good, and large portions. We also had a low alcohol beer (.5%) which had good flavor. Server was nice and ambiance was good--not too loud. Prices are reasonable. There is a bar, tables, and booths. Fun place good vibes and chill staff, first time here, we decided to meet up for our Christmas get together after our white elephant game. I loved the live band and excellent customer service, we had drinks and appetizers, we tried the loaded potato skins, garlic fries, asada nachos and mozzarella sticks. It's back! Glad to see this place is back. The service is always quite good! They have a great burger and that's why I go. I am sad that they no longer have tots as an option and they ditched the cheese curds (they were so excellent) and the potato curls app for potato skins (which were yummy but lack the novelty and potatoey goodness of the curls). The curds are sorely missed as well. One thing struck me as weird. I love onion rings and order them everywhere I can. Sequoia's, though, have always been really greasy. If one squeezes the oil pours out - no hyperbole - oil comes out of them like a sponge. It's as if they fry at a very low temp. This makes them inedible. When I asked the waiter if they have improved after the reopening or if they're the same grease sponges that pour out oil he said they are still super greasy and that they are intended to be that way. He said the fish in the fish and chips is that way too and it's intentional. I'm shocked. They are really bad and inedible. Why a restaurant would intentionally make food like this is beyond me. He said it's the beer batter but I fry my own at home with a beer batter and they are not greasy and do not expel oil when squeezed. They are light and crispy. In fact this is the only place I've been to that makes them like this. It's NOT the batter. When I mentioned this to a friend of mine he said he was in there a few days before me and had the fish and chips and confirmed they were grease sponges and he couldn't even dip them in tartar sauce because of all the grease. He said they were NOT good. So I guess it is intentional. It's kind of a weird hill to die on but whatever, if that's what they want to serve. Recommendations.... Burgers, flat breads, sandwiches, most apps. Avoid the grease soaked onion rings and the grease soaked fish and chips. They are intentionally made to hold excess grease and express grease when squeezed. It's weird but if they wanna die on that hill let them. There's still plenty of good food there! Great beers, nicely decorated, and friendly service. We stopped by for a drink while visiting the downtown area. We opted for Sequoia Brewing Company because we were driving down from Sequoia National Park. I enjoyed The Blood Orange and my wife enjoyed The General Sherman. Ambience was ok, basic brewery setting, nothing special. Server was friendly. Beers were ok. We tried the gen sherman ipa and another ipa they were both good. Chicken wings app, nice and crispy but the buffalo sauce is too strong in my opinion. Good thing they put both the ranch and the buffalo sauce on the side. Good call! Celery was old and dried up. The oriental chicken salad, good flavor, but DRENCHED in dressing! And they gave extra dressing on the side too...didn't even touch that cuz my salad was already too wet. I wish they use better lettuce though...it was mostly iceberg. Steak salad was good! They put the dressing on the side on this one thank god! So disappointed in this place. Five of us went here for lunch and there were only 2 tables with 2 people at them. We got seated right away but they took a really long time to come and take our drink orders. When the guy passed out our drinks he was holding them around the top area of the cups. I definitely needed a straw. Food service took so long that I was late 40 minutes going back to work. Seriously only 5 of us and the food literally came out one at a time. They must of been way understaffed. It probably was close to 30 minutes before our food came out from the time we ordered. One person had to end up boxing their food to go and didn't even eat it. When we finally got our bill he gave himself an 18% gratuity off a table of 5 people.... Yeah, I definitely won't be back and don't recommend anyone to come here! read more

The dude and I came here on 5/20/22 to celebrate a belated 3 year anniversary which we are glad we did as upon walking in they were playing all my favorite 70s and 80s songs that made me want to join the party and dance as there was a live band! There was a lot of open seating by the band but we were put in the back were we barely saw the band but whatever. Our server was a young gentleman who helped us out that night. I was in the mood for a drink which I got the Pretty In Pink as I am xD and it was okay. I would try something different again but happy to tried it. Since the dude was my DD he got water lols he probably needed a shot with all my singing and dancing ! We ordered food which I am not a big fan of the food. The Pesto Pizza tasted off, didn't taste fresh at all. I gave it 6/10. I'll pass. The dude got the Tri Tip sliders with fries he gave 7/10 but shared he wouldn't get it again. The food was not the strong part here but the alcohol, live band and people enjoying the night out like myself was! It was a great night and the most important piece is that we will come back again! I was happy to hear that this place was up and running again and for old times sake, I decided to take my family there this Saturday before taking in a Broadway show. I was hoping to have an extremely positive experience to add to the mood before our show, but I have to say I left disappointed and skeptical whether I will ever return. The service was acceptable at best as well as the food, but certainly nothing worthy of the 5 stars. Due to the high recommendation on the menu, I had to go with the chicken fried steak, but was highly displeased when it showed up, and that was pretty much all that was on the plate, with some mashed potatoes and a meager portion of gravy. As an example of the service: I asked our young server if I can have a side order of garlic toast with my order and he simply said no... If you can believe that? I understand that many businesses are struggling to serve a good product these days, but let's not forget that many of us as customers are struggling financially to get out and visit places like this. Frankly, I think I deserved more than what my group got. I'm just being honest here! read more

Great food, great beer! I haven't been to Sequoia to eat in a while. Normally I go when an event is happening and want to grab drinks. The beer never fails us. They have such a great variety, I think anyone can find a beer here they are happy with. We were seated right away on a lovely Sunday afternoon. The pretzel app came out warm and soft. The beer cheese was amazing I could drink it! The crispy chicken parm was delicious and had a creamy garlic sauce that I couldn't stop eating. My BF ordered the super loaded black bear club sandwich that came with almost every meat possible. He was only able to eat half. He got a side of chili. The chili did come out like warm and he asked them to warm it up. They literally warmed it up in the microwave which is kinda ehhhh but I'm not eating it, he is and he was happy with it. read more

We visited SBC 11/25/23 before a show at the Tower Theater and would definitely go back again! Our server Jordan was very attentive and helpful and gave me his personal recommendations when I asked his favorites. My wife had the crispy chicken sandwich, her mom the chicken tenders and I had the lumberjack pork ribs. The sides on the ribs were plentiful and the bbq sauce was also very tasty. It came with mixed veggies and you could choose another side and I took the garlic mashed potatoes. I also got a green salad with it. My wife's sandwich was also good and she had a salad as her side. Mom's chicken tenders were tasty and she got the crispy "skinny fries", which I was forced to finish off for her! We had the SBC homemade root beer and loved it as well. Great flavor and they have it on tap. We got there at about 5:00 and am glad we did as it started filling up shortly after. There is a large parking lot behind the building but I didn't see a lot of accessible spaces and the ones I did see were not real close to the entrance. Overall, I would definitely go back. The Tower Theater is just up the block and opens their doors an hour before showtime. Plan your date night for dinner and the show in the Fresno Tower District! read more

I came here a lot years ago, so when a friend suggested let's go here to get something to eat, drink, and listen to live music I was excited. However, the servers were rude and refused to serve anyone at our table alcohol just because as we were talking and laughing one person (out of a table of 5) slapped the table while we were laughing they assumed we were all drunk. I've never been so offended! No one was crazy loud, belligerent or disruptive. Why we were just labeled as all drunk and questioning what's wrong with me? And What did I do? I will say we were a diverse table made up of White, Black, and Mexican people and one person slapped the table in laughter and all of a sudden then whole table is too drunk to serve... Horrible! While I was excited to return to a place I used to frequent in my younger days, I will not be back again! read more

A nice place to relax and unwind for a good meal or a drink. Came here recently on a Saturday evening. The atmosphere is friendly and casual. There was even a live band playing at night and people dancing. The food was good. Nothing super fancy, but done well. I had a half order of oriental chicken salad and shared some pretzel bites and fried pickles. I enjoyed everything. The fried pickles are cut into long thin strips and fried. They almost looked like fried fish to me. The winner was definitely the pretzel bites. Those things were addictive and they came with this delicious dipping sauce. I don't remember what it was exactly. I think it was a variation of mustard made with IPA. If you come here to eat or drink, definitely recommend the pretzels! I came back after dinner for a drink and had my first White Russian, which was good. And sitting at the bar was a good place to socialize and people watch. read more

Karma! Juju! To Sequoia Brewery in the Tower District for intentionally running out of food on its last day of business! They intentionally planned this sneaky maneuver to trick customers into ordering beer only! The manager told me they ran out of food on Saturday, one full day prior to it being shut down permanently! The manager would not acknowledge my gift card on the last day of business. They deserved to be shut down for not making intelligent and wise financial and business decisions! We had a short time for a little food before an event and were in the neighborhood, we shared an 'starter' order of calamari and since it was time for Sunday football we also ordered a chili-dog off a little special menu. Got to admit that chili dog was fantastic and the calamari was outstanding! Some of the best calamari EVER! Breading was wonderful and the squid rings were cooked perfectly. Will go back again for the calamari alone! By the way, our server was fantastic as well. Always good for a solid fresh beer and more food then you expected. Today I had the new smoked sausage beer mac n cheese with pint of Rat Bastard. I love smoked sausage, beer cheese and macaroni so why wouldn't they all go well together? It was Smokey, spicy, creamy, smooth, beer bittered heaven. One possible improvement would be a soft pretzel stick to clean up the leftover beer cheese sauce so the wait staff stops giving me those looks while I lick the dish. The Rat Bastard was a slightly sweet DIPA at a respectable 8%. Not as hoppy bitter as I would expect for a DIPA which I like. It has a slight farmhouse funk that makes your mouth water. The patio was shaded well with misters but felt like some heat so we sat out on the edge. The wait staff is always great here. I have to give it up to them for making this the most normal dining experience since the new heath precautions went into affect while feeling safe. If you visit be safe, be nice, be patient, and enjoy your time out. read more
