I'm leaving this star for the genuinely kind associate who checked me out yesterday as well as the courteous woman ahead of me in line. Both made the interaction pleasant. What stood out unfortunately was the lack of professionalism from someone I believe to have been the store manager. Despite wearing a name tag there was no greeting acknowledgment or basic courtesy. This was disappointing especially as it reflects a pattern I've noticed at multiple Sephora locations throughout the Bay Area. Interestingly this level of unfriendliness has not been my experience at Sephora stores elsewhere. Sephora's products are premium priced particularly in today's economy. When customers are choosing to spend their money here the expectation of basic warmth and respect is not unreasonable. It is difficult to justify supporting a business when paying feels like an inconvenience rather than a valued exchange. Customer experience matters and this visit fell short. read more

This review is specific to the person who helped me find an exchange make up product today. Their name is Selena and I can't sleep right now because of their comment. I went in to exchange a Rare Beauty make up because it didn't blend well when I got home and used in front of my mirror. Maybe the mirrors are just too far away in the store for anyone shorter than six feet. Selena helped me by talking me into a different base make up by Haus Labs and different primer. I have other Haus products. When I said I was looking for something to cover pores and wrinkles, Selena laughed and told me the "only thing that will do that is a facelift." I would leave negative stars if I could!!! I went 3 times today attempting to get a skin scan/ color match and the woman who helped me had no idea what to offer me or how to help me. Then she put 3 orange foundations on my face, told me to walk around and she walked away. Really?? I waited and waited and waited, and went to someone else - she started looking for the original employee and apparently she had left on a break! Yep! She left me with 3 orange spots on my face and left for a break. I was super frustrated at that point and left. 20 minutes later I decided to go back hoping I'd find an employee who knows what they're doing. This male employee approached me, I told him I was looking for foundation and he started acting as if this is the first time he's hearing that. It was obvious that he had zero product knowledge and there was no way I could trust him with any of my purchases especially when it comes to color matching. Good product selection but the staff are super PUSHY. I came in to grab a quick sample as I wanted to color match the NARS light reflecting foundation. By the time anyone help me it was already 20 minutes then they tried to color match my skin and suggested matches that were nowhere close and then was pushing Fenty products and Charlotte Tilbury when I specifically said I want to color match Nars. It also didn't seem like the sales associate was very considerate of my time, especially when I told her I was in a rush. It felt like a timeshare pitch and I was trapped so I ended up leaving empty-handed. read more

I had an absolutely fabulous experience at Sephora on Union thanks to Cynara! I strolled in on a Friday evening, 30 minutes before closing. Cynara checked in with me to see if I needed anything. They had the most gorgeous silver glitter eyeshadow look--I knew I could trust their taste. She led me to Danessa Myricks to show me the newest product the Colorfix Stix--an incredible double-ended shadow stick. They expertly swatched three shades on my hand, and I fell in love with #8 Meteorite/Draco, which is a gunmetal grey cream shadow on one end and a blue/purple shimmer on the other. Cynara helped me find everything I needed in addition to the beautiful shadow stick that I never would have seen had it not been for her. They were incredibly warm, kind, and clearly passionate and extremely knowledgeable about the products. I can't wait to come back and shop with Cynara again! Thank you Danielle, for helping me with a concealer which led to a color correcting skin tint, waterproof mascara & eyebrow pencil. I was originally looking for a concealer by Laura Mercier for my under eye area that was recommended by a lady who I follow on IG. I met Danielle, who inquired if I needed assistance, which I did, regarding color selection. After discussing the purpose, she said that her favorite concealer was by the brand IT. She determined that my skin was pretty fair with pink undertones, which was lighter than her initial thoughts so she switched up the concealer color & also recommended a skin tint with SPF 40 (I usually don't wear foundation but wear several layers of sunscreen due to previously living in Hawaii & skin protection). I never do anything with my eyebrows other than a little bit of plucking & she lightly colored in my brows so they weren't overwhelming (my fear was that I would have eyebrows like Angry Birds), which was perfect. I usually wear waterproof mascara due to workouts & she applied the IT Superhero waterproof mascara which really lengthened my lashes. It is dirty inside, doesn't feel hygienic, which is a basic requirement for a beauty store. There is grim and dust on the floor under every shelving unit. It's obvious the floor is half assed mopped, and no shelves are ever cleaned just restocked. Sephora desperately needs a deep clean. This location was pretty nice. Even during COVID, seemed to be well stocked and have helpful staff. HOWEVER-- the last few times I've stopped by to pickup my usual stuff, I noticed the more expensive/luxury skincare items are all held in the back storeroom. Customers can no longer sample products or take certain selections to the register without first tracking down a sales associate to go and retrieve the item from the stockroom. Combined with very limited staffing, this becomes a bit of a roadblock. Most recently, when I got back to the La Mer and SK-II section and noticed the signs saying products were now being held in the back, I eventually wandered up to the front of the store to ask the associate watching the front door if there was someone available to get the La Mer I was looking for from the back. I was told there were a few people ahead of me but someone would be with me shortly. A queue before the queue. Seemed odd, right? Especially when we're talking about $300 eye creams here. She nervously mumbled something into her headset and I assumed an associate would come get me; but as I was waiting, I quickly noticed I was now being watched by every associate in the store. Even the cashiers were looking at me from across the store. I'm assuming I was judged and they got the wrong idea (male, just came from the gym, in a Sephora...), but I realized I wouldn't be getting any actual help. Rouge member. Spent more on skincare in the last year than I'd ever care to admit at this location. But I'll be taking advantage of the free shipping in the future. This was a bit much. read more

I have been coming to this location for years - and I give lots of stars for the friendly staff and the overall inventory. The three stars come from the store closing at arbitrary times. I can count several instances whether it is during the middle of the afternoon or twenty minutes before closing (this week!) where I have gone out of my way to schedule errands, including one to Sephora, into my schedule. This Sephora is small and pales in comparison to their counterpart locations but carries all of the essentials, or at least in my opinion. The staff were nice and asked if we needed help but there were times where I can see they were getting overwhelmed by the influx of patrons yet there were 2 or 3 staff just standing there gloss eyed and more engaged in conversations with each other rather than helping guests out. I've been here for two makeup classes now: one for fake eye lashes and one for smoky eye. The instructors have their "favorites" even though they haven't met any of us students before. My favorites, I mean that the instructors spend more time with certain students. I thought it was only the first class that was like this. So I signed up for another. Nope, same thing. I would ask them for assistance and they would say one thing on how to apply the makeup and then go back to their favorite, literally watch them and teach them step by step, while others like myself were left to figure it out for myself. The customer service is also rude. The greeter at the door both times I went had some sort of attitude. I went to purchase two items before class started, returned the same two items after class was over, and the person shorted me. I paid with cash, she gave me my money back in five dollar bills. I counted it the first time and she shorted me 5 dollars. I told the person then and there that she was short. She rolled her eyes and asked to see my receipt. She counted the money again, realized she was wrong and gave me back a five. Unfortunately it wasn't until I got home that I realized that I was short 10 dollars originally. So she gave me back five and I was still short five when I got home and looked at the receipts. yes it was my fault for not making sure at the time. But bitch, if you can't count to 65 by multiples of 5, you need to go back to second grade. Save yourself the trouble of this place, and head to the one in stonestown. Superior customer service! I visited this location today for the first time as I usually shop at their Eastbay locations. I thought I needed a new foundation shade and powder. I was greeted immediately when I entered the store and a wonderful representative named Jenna (I think that is the correct spelling of her name) helped me with my foundation questions. Moments later I was approached by Kali, she immediately knew the foundation shade that I was wearing, which I was super impressed. They both educated me on the importance of hydration and exfoliation and assisted me with some awesome products. I highly recommend this location I will definitely be going back! read more
