I visited the Diptyque Union Square store in San Francisco recently as a little birthday treat to myself, and it was such a wonderful experience. The store itself is beautiful, but what really stood out was how lovely the employees were. They were warm, welcoming, and genuinely made me feel celebrated during my visit. I picked up a few candles (pictured) and was surprised with a complimentary birthday candle and matches. They also had an artist in-store painting personalized luggage tags with purchases, which was such a thoughtful touch. I had one done of my cat, and it made the visit even more special. The combination of gorgeous products and outstanding customer service made this one of the most enjoyable shopping experiences I have had in a long time. If you are in San Francisco and love candles, I cannot recommend the Union Square Diptyque enough. read more

I have been a huge Diptyque fan for several years (since the pandemic). I've shopping in the Union Square store in the past but I've found the tone of the shop to be restrictive - not fun - because of higher security needed in the neighborhood. You have to be let in since the door is locked. Upon entry, I'm met by a sales person who lacks warmth. I stopped in to sniff the almond (Amande) candle that was just released (composition: almond, tonka bean and a floral). The candle sits prettily on display on a island. I smell the strong almond scent and also the iris (floral) scent inside the base once decanted. To make sure, I've identified the scent correctly, I sniff an Iris candle on its own. Since Amande is not a scent I'm drawn to I leave without purchasing anything. In reflection, if I do decide to explore more Diptyque products, I'll visit the Pacific Heights boutique which has a friendlier and more relaxed ambiance. read more

Last night, in a smack talking session over fried chicken and sangria with a bevy of beautiful women, talk turned to candles and their love-inducing properties. Resounding endorsements for Diptyque came from all around. Feu de Bois (Firewood) was suggested to heat things up (though, admittedly, when the object of your desire resides 2,810 miles away not much ersatz heat is necessary.) Baies (Black-Currant Leaves and Bulgarian Roses) also came highly recommended. One thing was made perfectly clear, these candles might smell good in a chic boutique or an office but the best place to burn these babies was the bedroom! So this afternoon I stole away to Maiden Lane to check out Diptyque's offerings myself. I appeared in the doorway and asked first to smell the Feu de Bois. I explained to the welcoming sales associate that my paramour was due in San Francisco soon and she guided me though the various scents she deemed to be romantic. I loved both the Feu de Bois and the Baies but in the end I chose: OYEDO - Japanese yuzu fruit, grapefruit and mandarin. A super clean, crisp scent. TUBEROSE - One sniff of this heady fragrance and it'll be no surprise why Tuberose is Diptyque's #1 scent. As my purchases were rung up the sales associate told me to make sure to burn the candle for at least three hours upon first lighting. I smiled knowingly and promised to do just that. First heard about it while reading an random article about how Jennifer Lopez "requires" Diptyque candles during her tour and I thought, "what a snob." Had no idea what it was and frankly didn't care... until a few years later and I had read another article raving about the candles and their quality, etc. When I saw on Yelp that they had opened an, albeit small, location in Maiden Lane, I knew I had to pay a visit. Walking into the tiny shop (main floor is about 12 x 12 ft wide and descends down a stairway onto the lower floor with an, even smaller, space), the mixture of pleasant aroma greets you. It isn't offensive like the smell that hits you like a brick wall upon entering an Abercrombie & Fitch Co., but different because Diptyque's has a sophistication that's nothing like the A&F's uber-masculine/obnoxious man cologne. Originally, Diptyque was founded in Paris as a candle company. After the demand for the candles boomed, they parlayed their success and ventured into creating other fragrant goods (colognes/parfums, body care, etc.). With its candle business as its bread and butter, Diptyque has about 30+ scents available and this boutique carries most, if not all, of them. My personal favorites are: Baies (fruity and earthy and BEST SELLING in the US), Tubereuse (floral and akin to smell of jasmine) and Oyédo (fruitier and orange). With each standard-size candle at $60 (burns for about 60 hours), it can be cost prohibitive. I reserve burning my candles to special events (romantic evening at home, family dinners, etc.). They have larger candles that go upwards of $90-$275 (which are probably reserved for company execs or celebs)! During that visit, I picked up a couples candles (Baies and Oyédo), Oyédo room spray and Oyédo's eau de toilette (unisex). I found the fragrance to be unforgettable; sprays on lightly and with a fresh/clean scent. During checkout, the customer service was impeccable; they offered a few sample items from different scents which matched my Oyédo obsession. Not once did I feel the pressure to buy something I didn't want/need. They were polite to allow for me to smell at least five other candles before finally arriving to my chosen Oyédo. In the end, I recommend this location. Not that Diptyque is exclusive to their boutiques (you can get them at any high-end store like Bloomingdales, Nordstrom or Neiman Marcus), but with this personal customer service, they've definitely made a lifelong customer out of me! 5/5 stars well deserved! read more

I have a hobby of collecting senses, and this has been my secret spot for candle, perfume, shower gel and little personal sense. I used to shop them online all base on lucky, but now I get to smell everything in the store. As a very visual person, I often judge the bottle before the sense even tho they all look similar. I started with the large Figuier candle 2 years ago and I felt like I found my soul mate in sense. When I found the store in the little corner street in downtown, I went insane, and in loved. I found my favorite sense, Do Son, and I got it in shower gel. Three bottles in, and I think I boned a bit too deeply with this sense. Today I went to the store and look for it in candle because I want the whole room to smell like it but sadly it doesn't come in candles. But the new sale person recommended something similar in candles so I got it, hoping that it will work. A little thought about product catalogs. Perfume: pretty long lasting on hair and clothing, not much on skin. Shower gel: the whole bathroom will carry the beautiful smell, but if you want your body smell to last, I would put on the same sense of lotion (Do Son!!!!!) and it should like half on the day. Roller Ball: good price and last for around 1 - 2 hours on wrists. Candle: you would smell the sense forever, but it works best to get a glass hurricane and/or a sniffer with it to create a stronger sense in bedroom / living room. Worth it just to be amazed that with one hard smack at the bottom of the glass, the salesperson can release the candle from the glass cup and lift the bottom of it to your nose to inhale its heavenly scent. (Why does it never work for me?) The Fig candle is my favorite, heavenly and clean-smelling. Expensive but the candles burn forever. And if you're in a hurry for a hostess, birthday gift or "I'm classy" stocking stuffer, you can whip in and out with a pre-wrapped candle. I just wish they were open a little later in the evening so I wouldn't be so pressed to run until I fall to get there after work. read more

Looooved this store! I have been to diptyque stores in Asia and in Paris, but the service I received at this store was the best. Because of Covid they only allowed two guests in, and we had to keep our masks on the entire time. This made smelling the scents a bit difficult but our sales associate was very patient with us and introduced me to several scents that I couldn't find at other sales points such as Nordstrom. She knew the products very well and provided me with many samples based on the fact that I enjoy citrus scents. Would love to come back here when I visit the city next time. read more

There was another woman in the store who was shown various products by an associate while I waited five minutes to be greeted by one of the other three who were milling about in the back room. I walked around the boutique looking for their holiday collections and The staff was not engaging with me nor were they helpful. I've had a better experiences shopping at Valley Fair and Palo Alto and you're better off going there. I regret even buying anything because the staff was just so lackluster. When I first wandered into Bergdorf Goodman on 5th Ave. in New York about three years ago, i was captivated by Henri Bendel's line of strongly and unusually scented candles. I was hardly seduced by the price of $29 for a 14-oz jar, but I loaded up anyway. Little did I suspect that only a few years later, Bendel's line would seem to be priced like a flea-market bargain by comparison. Diptyque...what can I say? It's a love affair. The scents are so strong and pure. I can smell a jar candle burning in any room of the condo the second I walk through the door. I'm crazy about the basil scent for the kitchen, and the cypress or other evergreen-type scents in the winter. Shopping at the Maiden Lane store is pure luxury--the amiable staff will take it's time, and would personally present every single item in the store before your eager nares if that is what your little heart desired. Every time I come to Diptyque in San Francisco I hate the customer service I received. I either get a snooty sales person, or someone that simply doesn't pay me any mind and prioritizes other customers. I don't know if this is racial profiling (maybe not that many Latino customers go into the store?) but it's so disappointing to go into a luxury retail store and get such treatment. I have been a loyal Diptyque fan for about a decade. I have been patronizing the store since they were on Maiden Lane. I have an entire cupcake stand full of Diptyque candles, as well as the empty jars all over my desk, my vanity, and holding a small garden in my living room. I love the products, I have come to be vehemently disgusted with the staff at the San Francisco flagship boutique and the way that they treat customers. I have had at least two years of disappointing customer service experiences which have finally prompted me to leave this review. The boutique used to be one of my favorite retail experiences - a wonderful oasis in the bustle of downtown San Francisco. They have had a lot of turnover. The way the boutique handles their customer base, exclusives and launches is shameful. Most recently, I received an email from the SF store on 12/29/2018 letting me know that the Valentine's Day Roses Collection would be launching 1/2/2019. I was invited to explore the new collection and promised a "special gift with any purchase from the Roses collection." I forwarded this email to no less than 5 of my close friends who also love Diptyque. I made plans to go on launch day with one of those friends visiting from out of town. I was going to at least purchase some items from the collection for a friend in Calgary, and my friend needed to buy a belated xmas gift for someone and was sure she would find something there. Another one of my friends asks me to text her when I find out what the gift is. We get to the boutique on 1/2/2018 and all the displays are up. They are not burning the new candles, however, they are burning Tuberose and Baies. I ask the sales associate working what the gift with purchase is only to be told there is no gift right now. Surprised, I mentioned that I got an email and she asks if she can see it - making some excuse about how they must have just not gotten all the directions from corporate yet. I say no - the email was directly from the store boutique San-Francisco@diptyque.us and show her the email. She takes a look at it and exclaims, quite loudly, in front of me, my friend, and at least one other customer in the store "OH THAT'S ONLY FOR OUR SPECIAL CUSTOMERS." Then, despite the email clearly stating "special gift with any purchase of the Roses collection" she proceeds to tell me I can have a Tuberose (?!) votive if I spend $200. My friend and I are both a little confused about the new rose scents, so I ask if they will be burning the new candles in the store. The SA says yes, tomorrow (1/3) as today is not actually the "REAL" launch, they only just barely got the window display up - the "REAL" launch is 1/3 and they will start burning the candles in the store then. By this point, the SA has figured out that we both have houses full of Diptyque products, and offers my friend some samples. We leave otherwise emptyhanded. Disappointed and quite disgusted by the idea that the store policy would be to have a gwp only for special customers but not all customers, I reply to the email for clarification. The same SA responds and apologizes for miscommunication as her manager is sick, and promises to set aside a gift for me in the back of the store. Two days later on 1/4, because I did want to make sure to secure a pink Roses oval for my friend in Calgary, my BF and I go back to the store. A different SA is working. They are indeed burning both of the new roses candles, but also Tuberose. We spend some time with the candles. I decide that I actually am not a huge fan of them, and I still have 3/4 of 2017's Rosamundi and have not yet touched 2018's Turkish Delight. I show the SA a picture of my collection and purchase just the new Roses votive duo and Roses oval for my friend - both in the limited edition Roses collection. She looks up my customer profile to process my purchase. And then hands me the bag. Even though I spent $143 exclusively on Roses collection items, I was not offered as much as a sample vial, much less a "special gift." At this point I picked up the business card of the boutique manager and asked her to get the bag in the back the first SA set aside for me. WOW. Again, it is messed up and deeply alienating that the store would offer a gift with purchase only to some customers but not to all customers advertised but to try to do so and then fail so spectacularly is just pathetic. This comes after a couple years of dealing with piss poor customer service from the store: - Several of my friends and I being dropped from the email invite lists and being blamed for unsubscribing when we ask. - An SA snubbing friends of mine for asking about a gift with purchase "oh THAT is only for customers of ours that spend a CERTAIN AMOUNT" AT AN INVITE ONLY HOLIDAY PRE LAUNCH. Those same friends, avid collectors, bought the boxed City Exclusives set and the holiday votive trio during our visit totaling over $500 before tax - well enough to meet the $200 spend. word limit read more

I rarely leave reviews and only do so when something really warrants sharing. If I could give negative stars, I would. I've been a loyal Diptyque customer for almost 15 years, as I love their candles and fragrance. This review is not about the quality of their products. However, this review is for the poor customer service that began on Sunday, November 11th, when I tried to exchange the 2018 Holiday Advent Calendar my family doesn't agree with and costs $425. They don't offer returns, which is fine because I already knew that my exchange would end up casting me more out of pocket. I had the Bais indoor/outdoor candle ($350) and hourglass diffuser ($175) in mind. To my surprise and disappointment, I was told by Sales Associates, Elisabeth and Collette, that the Advent calendar was non-exchangeable, as it's a Holiday item. Mind you, it was purchased in the boutique on November 1st, shipped to my house and received on November 6th. There was no prior mention that the item was non-exchangeable at the time of purchase, verbally or written. Nor was there any written Holiday exclusion policy on the receipt. The two sales associates let me know that going forward they'll be sure to mention to other customers. When I asked to escalate this to the District Manager, Dustin, I was told that they couldn't call him back because they didn't want to call his personal mobile again. I was told that I'd need to submit an online customer service inquiry to escalate my request for an exchange. I sent my initial customer service email on November 11th. As I had received no reply by November 14th, I called the customer service number, no live service, and left my message with a brief summary and request for a call back. In addition, I sent a follow-up email and referenced the voicemail I had left. I'm now beyond the 14 days exchange policy and stuck with an Advent calendar. This location has lost a loyal customer and I will be sure to share this negative experience among our strong ties with the French American community within SF. read more

Yes Diptyque candles are highly priced. At $60 a pop most of you may bitch and bicker. However, you can't compare Diptyque with the candles you purchase at Bath & Body Works at $10 a jar. The pureness and authenticity of Diptyque's essential oil is what makes the brand what it is today. Traveling all the way to Goa in India to obtain the purest of Patchouli or extracting tons of tuberose only to get an ounce of its oil are the reasons why your candles cost $60. Luxury creates exclusivity. The last thing you want to do is to invite guests to your Glade-scented humble abode. Keeping the olfactory of your guests in bewilderment and wonder is quite sexy. When I visit the homes of my friends, I rarely remembered how captivating the smell of his/her Febreeze or Glade Plug-in was. The scent of your home says a lot about you! The scent of Diptyque is classy, extraordinary, rare, and exclusive. $60 is a small price to pay for all these. Diptyque is not for everyone. To me, it's like wearing a Marchesa gown vs. a dress you purchased from A.B.S Schwartz to a Museum gala. It's like sprinkling Stella McCartney perfume vs. Adidas cologne from Target. It's like pouring a glass of French champagne that smells like warm brioche vs. a Korbel you got from Walmart. The difference is immense! To say I am a fan of Diptyque is an understatement. I have never lived with a roommate who is as obsessed with candles and colognes as my roommate, he needs to go to candle rehab. Every time I walk in the house it smells like pumpkin, ocean breeze, coconut lime and verbeena, rose, cupcake, cookies, and he tends to spray all his new colognes on me. I'm always like "Thanks, now I smell like a dude". One Saturday afternoon we decide to go shopping and I told him, there's one little store you will love on Maiden Ln! I drag him to Diptyque and Rafael helped us. Wow, he is like the perfumer guru. I was impressed by his knowledge of the products and friendly customer service. I was so dizzy after my roommate literally put on every single scent and took a bag with him. Out of all of them my favorite was Philosykos: Woody aromatic blend of fig tree leaves and white cedar, 1996. It's not the fragrance the city deserves, it's the fragrance the city NEEDS. They should do a special, buy one, Diptyque will donate to one in need. "Memories are the soul's perfume". I couldn't agree more, George Sand. You see - the scent and memory connection is a powerful one, and I'm super into fragrance for not just me but also for my home (err, 615sf studio). I was recently reminiscing about the wonderful scent that perfumes the town of Sevilla, Spain. The scent of the bitter orange blossoms is heady, honeyed, and has inspired quite a few poems... it's all really rather intoxicating! This walk down memory lane inspired a walk over to Diptyque, so I could get my hands on their Oranger candle. Lightly spiced with elements of the entire tree, this is the orange scent as you've never before experienced it. Their standard-sized candles certainly aren't economical at $60 each, but Diptyque candles are known for their luxury craftmanship, elegant containers, proprietary blend of first-class waxes, and the precious raw materials used to create those stop-you-in-your-tracks scents. I tend to savor them by only lighting them every so often, and so they last forever. My other favorite candle is their Figuier, whose scent evokes the smell of fig trees at my grandmother's home in a tiny Croatian village. Diptyque candles make the best gifts - I can't think of a woman who wouldn't welcome one of these beautiful candles in her home! read more

I have been obsessed with Diptyque for years and for good reason. Their scents and product quality are amazing. Fact. Even though their candles and personal fragrances can be purchased in other high-end stores, there is something special about this boutique. Maybe it is the fact that it is located off the beaten path in busy Union Square. Or that it reminds me of a quaint old shop. Whatever the reason, Diptyque is a must stop when I visit SF. read more

Have been in this establishment several times with my friend. They have a great variety of candles, oils, perfumes, etc. This is a place where a person can spend at least an hour just getting lost in all the terrific scents. They are a little pricey but then thats the way it is if you want the best. They have one called Amber and when you light it up it fills the room with a very relaxing odor which for me actually takes all the stress from my day and washes it all away. If dropping $60 on a candle is wrong, I don't want to be right. Best. Candles. In the universe. I'm addicted, and it's an expensive habit. My favorite is Canelle (Cinnamon) which smells not at all like crappy holiday candles but more like a Parisian cathedral. But really I love them all, and the next time I feel like, ahem, burning money, I will go buy an apartment full. Seriously, these are like Ambien in candle form. Ahhhh. read more

Walked in . . . snotty sales dude approaches. We asked for the oils with the sticks . . . Snotty sales guys says: "IF you knew our company, you would know we are not into trends". Rumor has it the ex still talks about how fabulous I smell. And it's true. I smell fabulous. But that's because I wear their perfume. I'm not going to tell you what kind, because I don't want you all rushing out smelling like me. The candles. Oh man, the candles. Nobody on here is kidding when they say $60 for one of these candles seems absurd, but it's worth it. First of all, they last an exceedingly long amount of time, secondly, they smell like all that is Heavenly and Nectar of the Godly. My favorites and Baies (Black Current) and Chene (Oak), totally unique but oddly familiar and comforting. Be careful not to overdo it in here, it's easy to do, but pace yourself. I may be one of the few who secretly ecstatic that we have a Diptyque boutique in SF. It's one of only 4 boutiques in the world with the only other US location in Boston. Usually, SF gets the last of every major retailer, so it must be the ultra affluent of SF that helped seal the deal for the store to set up shop here. The boutique itself is very Parisian and being on that little charming Maiden Lane really seals the European deal. Chartreuse walls, gleaming red wood and the bi-level thing really lends to the lux experience. The sales people seem snooty in the beginning, but they warm up to you and really spend time going through the different products/scents. They also carry the fancy Mariage Frres brand teas, as well as Eskandar (no brainer I guess since Diptyque and Eskandar are distributed by the same company in the US). Mariage teas are truly divine and I used to think it was darn pricey, but these days, with all the high-end teas flooding the market, that price point seems oh so (sadly) normal. Being the freak that I am, I don't much like any of Diptyque's "popular" scents. I love Narcisse. Lit at night, it's like you are in a garden with tons of night blooming Narcissus. Tip: to smell Diptyque candles pop them out of the glass container and smell the container. read more
