She used to take a lot of stuff to Josy's a few years back and although she hasn't popped in in the last few years, she suggested we try her for our alteration needs, especially considering the shop is near where we live. Given the service we received, I'm sad to say we won't be patronizing this establishment ever again. The one lady on the floor was on the phone the entire time and although she clearly saw us come in, didn't so much as nod in our direction to acknowledge that we were there. Not a quick "I'll be with you in a minute", nor a smile. Nothing. And it didn't sound like an important business conversation from where we were standing. The lady on the upper level (whom we presume to be Josy) eventually asked if she could help us after a good three or four minute wait. After inquiring about wedding dress alterations, she asked if we had purchased it there and when we replied in the negative she said that they "usually don't do that". She then quickly changed her tune, claiming that her seamstress (who was supposedly on vacation) MIGHT be able to do it "if she had time" after altering dresses purchased there and to call back in a month (!!) when she was back from vacation. Now I'm not sure if this is the standard with most fashion places / seamstresses but I can tell you that Jean's Fashions (right down the road) was more than happy to help us out....they were actually happy to have our business and didn't treat us with contempt or indifference. I'm not sure if both ladies were perhaps just having a bad day or what but that's really beside the point. Isn't the customer king or queen? We're a pretty respectable looking young couple but even if we weren't, I still wouldn't expect such surly service. You had more than a fair chance to get our business but you lost it quite quickly!

Yes, they are pricey (but in my humble American experience there is quite a mark up on *all* clothes in Canada vs the States - like a cheap tank top at H&M will be $5 more automatically in Canada - the exchange rate right now more than makes up for it) but a lot of the items aren't much - if any - cheaper online. I also just love supporting places like this, since there are so few left, and since a lot of "goth" brands run small I prefer to try a lot of the stuff on in person. The girl working and I had a good chat about the history/future of Lip Service in particular and some other stuff. She was super helpful and friendly which was also a change from a lot of alt shops, where the employees seem to spend their time perfecting that "I'm way too fucking cool to talk to you" vibe that makes me eye roll. I wanted *all* the things but settled on two LS dresses, one of which was shiny PVC and fulfilled all of 15 year old me's dreams. Definitely a spot to check out for a pricier but quality "statement piece" or to comb the shoe and clothing sales racks. I'd also like to add they had a surprising amount of men's clothes and not just band t-shirts and jeans either.

I'll always have a soft spot for this place - highly recommend if you're into vintage, pretty dresses. Most of that part of Queen Street has great vintage finds.

There were more adorable earrings, purses, and clothes than I could fathom. My friend and I wandered the store for nearly an hour alternately exclaiming, "cute!" with mouth agape or chatting up the staff. As Erin H mentions, each showcased artist/designer works onsite once a week. The only downside to this is if inquiring minds have questions about something other than the artist du jour personally made, there won't be any answers. And as a person with some hard core metal allergies, I won't buy jewelry unless I am certain that it doesn't contain anything that will make my earlobes swell. However, I was lucky to encounter the artist who crafted the earrings that fell in love with and so, got to take them home with me (and support the local arts). Plus, I was able to be a helper that day (I love being of assistance). As the resident artist handed me a credit card receipt, I was able to pass along this little tip: legal colors only please! I passed on the pink pen handed to me and instead signed with a my own, handy blue plume. For, although I wasn't planning on contesting the charges, anyone could attempt to do so and without either a customer's blue or black ink signature on file, the store might end up "out" some fundage.

We were able to fit in an appointment the day before for Sunday at 11 a.m. Despite the dingy outside appearances, there's quite a great selection of dresses, and Susan, the sales rep who helped my friend, had a great attitude and fetched some great dresses. We came out with three great options. I don't know what my friend will decide on in the end; that's up to her. But out of all the stores we went to, we felt like we had the best customer try-on experience here. There wasn't any pressure to buy, and Susan was genuinely positive and friendly; we felt comfortable with her. Plus, the dress prices were more affordable, about $1100-$1200 for the ones we liked. Though the quality of the fabric may not be as high as some of the other dresses we tried on at more premium stores, what's most important is the style and how it looks in photographs. Though I think we only mentioned a budget of $1500 so maybe there are higher quality dresses at a higher price point. The customer service and value is among the best. Definitely give them a look if you're in the market for wedding dresses.

These are fabulous, well crafted pieces that are actually made in Toronto! The quality of the materials, the design and craftsmanship are stellar. They are not "cheap" per se, but when you factor in the high quality and the fact that these coats will continue to look amazing for years, it's actually a bargain. Plus in this world climate, I think it's important that we try to keep manufacturing in Canada! The owner John was very friendly and patient, spending about 45 minutes helping me try on coats until I found the perfect one. The thoughtful touches on the coat to make it warm, yet stylish is insane. Fur lined pockets! Extra hidden layer to keep you warm. Clever design that ensures the fit is fabulous but with an extra piece in the front to ensure no sneaky blast of cold wind gets in. I'm quite confident that this is as warm if not warmer than my ugly puffer coat! Did I mention how exquisite the fabric is? Omg. It is beautiful to look at and also feels so soft and sleek. They have a workshop in the back and do alterations for their coats as well as any others that you bring in. Lisa, John's sister was very helpful and she was responding to my emails at 10:30pm on a Sunday night (!) and again at 7am the next morning! By the end of my time at the shop, John felt like a friend. What a lovely, kind man!! John said that they will have their spring coats out after Easter, and I will definitely be going back! Btw, the Apple Maps app showed the place as "permanently closed" which is a lie. They're going to try and fix it. You can also look at their coats online: https://coatsinc.com

This little family owned Canadian tailor/retail business is located at 951 Wilson Avenue, Toronto. A large tear on the sleeve of my custom-made sheepskin leather jacket prompted me to GOOGLE "leather jacket repairs". I called a number of businesses to inquire the nature of their work and the approximate cost. I landed on Mary Ellen for none other than the ease and confidence by which I was advised. It was great to see the repair was done tastefully. The workmanship was superb. The sleeve was repaired with a matching patch sewed on the other sleeve. I was pleasantly surprised that the repair actually enhanced the overall style and look of the jacket. And the price was very competitive! Though this was my first and only experience I sensed that Mary Ellen is "old school", meaning, every customer, large or small, gets the same honest and friendly treatment. There are no fancy machines to speed up the job, and no unnecessary sales pitch to convince you that they are good. I will not hesitate to give my future business again to Mary Ellen.
