This wasn't what we were expecting, but I have to give them credit. We thought it would be a bargain-style thrift shop. Nope, it's a vintage clothing boutique. So yeah, we found tons of awesome things, but they weren't cheap. But I have to say, it's clean, well organized, and the staff are friendly and very helpful. And some of the pieces are so great it's fun just browsing. We didn't end up getting anything, because we are cheapskates, but I still think it's a great shop in a cool neighborhood. read more

I GOT MY PROM DRESS FROM HERE! Although the dress was originally from David's Bridal for more than $500, i got it here for $90. The workers were very nice and the blonde worker with red lipstick (sorry i didn't get her name but i wanted to shout her out!) helped me fit into the dress, adjust it, and even paired some heels with it too. Such a positive experience, it made my day! read more

One of the best places to look for a Halloween costume outside an actual costume store. Now I had always been the Mexx or Banana Republic kind of guy, however the entire street where Exile is at is right for the picking if you want to get a new wardrobe on the cheap. It is easier for women than men but you can get some really nice pieces of clothing. For example, I want to buy a blazer at Mexx? That $295 easy. You got into Exile and you want to buy say (and assuming it is your lucky day) 3 shirts and two three pairs of jeans for under $100! That's a steal. Like jeans for under $20, depending on the size of course. Or a trench coat for $30! My last coat on Queen Street was on sale and it was still $380! They do carry more for women unless you want crazy Hawaiian shirts or corduroy pants --which I don't. They also can make your own custom shirts which is awesome as a joke gift. Plus of course the costumes, which you can get full body ones for cheap. Now, about the only issue I have is that as more people know about this place, their prices are going up! Not cool, but they are still a bargain. If you are okay buying second-hand then drop by take a look. Again if you are woman chances are that you will find more selection than if you are a man. But it is still worth the visit to Kensington Market, the street and Exile. read more

Second hand clothes at their finest. Exile can be a bit kitchy but there's always something fun for everyone. great wig and sunglasses and costume selection. It's not an exclusive vintage shop in the way that the others in Kensington are, it's more for the tourists. great for grabbing a fun gift for a friend or getting an outfit for a theme party. However, they do have a great selection of leather and fur jackets and the staff are top shelf, like you're at your friend's house looking through their closet to borrow a cool party dress. read more

Exile is a vintage clothing dream in the heart of Kensington Market. Exile has a lot of great vintage finds year-round, like gowns, suits, uniforms, etc. The real draw of Exile though, are the Halloween costumes that pop up around September each year!! Exile is my go-to place for Halloween. Not only do they have vintage clothes where you can start your costume, they also have full costumes for sale, and costume accessories. Need a mustache? Go to Exile. Or glasses, or makeup, or a wig! They have everything! So, why is this a three star review? Because of the prices!! If I wanted to spend $100 - $150 on a costume, (or anything vintage, for that matter) I could easily spend that here - but I'm a little bit cheaper than that, so at this point I only go there for the accessories, which are more reasonably priced. Also their selection really goes downhill closer to Halloween - so shop early! read more

I always have great conversations there and leave feeling happy with my find and experience. Recently found the perfect summer pink dress, a spectacular emerald green beauty, skirts....well I saw one named after me so I really suppose they know what I liken :) Many of my favourite items are from there. I ALWAYS stop here when I am in Kensington! Lynn is always absolutely lovely to me and the staff is friendly and helpful when I am looking for something specific. I have found many a dazzling frock in this store, as well as old velvet opera coats, ugly Christmas sweaters, holographic sunglasses and vintage furs, just to name a few of the treasures that have come home with me from this kooky store! Exile is always full of fantastic finds! The front of the store functions as the custom tee-shirt printing area. Co- owner Jed Lueras is our go to man for original prints. The Vintage clothing is always nicely organized and in great shape. We spent time looking at 60's and 70's vintage dresses. and the men's dress shirts, cowboy shirts, plaids and Hawaiians and were amazed at the abundant selection. Towards the back of Exile is their vintage costume section. Here you will find everything from, 80s prom dress styles, vintage 50s dresses and so much more. They have a great selection of Legs Ave hosiery, professional dancer fishnets. Vintage and new bustiers are well priced for anyone looking to get into burlesque or expand their tickle trunk! read more

Exile isn't the quintessential Kensington experience. It's more Halloween darling than vintage diva. If you're in the market for a costume (new, used, wig, mask), Exile is exactly what you're looking for. I was in and out in 10 minutes (on Halloween no less) with a baller costume. It definitely has it's purpose, but it lacks the charm you'd expect in this hood. read more

Someone working here saw me looking stricken at one of the show racks, and asked me if I was looking for anything in particular. I said I needed dour shoes, no glitter or brightness, since I was going to wear them to a funeral. I don't think I told them who had died, but they seemed to intuit (correctly) that it was someone important to me. The person spent the next quarter of an hour taking me around the store, finding me everything I needed, and sharing some of their own stories of loss. This was such an unexpected kindness, and it meant a lot to me. read more

My daughter and I went to Kensington for the first time yesterday and wandered into Exile. Wow! we must have spent an hour looking and trying things on. The owner/manager/salesperson was so nice and helpful and it turned out had relatives in our home town in Muskoka that my daughter and I knew well. Got some good deals and only wish that I had more to spend. Will definitely be back next time we are in town. read more

A few years ago, Exile used to have some cute vintage finds at reasonable prices - $10 and $15 dresses and $30 leather jackets, for instance. A couple of days ago, I was in the mood for vintage shopping and my friend and I decided to trek to Kensington after not having been there a while. Exile was one of our first stops, and it was extremely, extremely disappointing. Crappy pieces in bad used condition with price tags that could only be justified by good quality and designer vintage. An old, brown wool circle skirt with MOTH HOLES and snags for $100...are you kidding me?! The dresses range from $30-$100 and most are in bad condition. The styles were...well, I could find the same ones at Goodwill for $4.99. Don't waste your time here - exile has clearly slid downhill and the selection and prices are shockingly bad. read more

Exile Vintage is what I look for when i enter a store as iconic a landmark as it. We can all say that the core of Kensington would be missing a pulse with out Exile. Now it being so known adds pressure to never have an off day. I almost always have a differentiate idea of the outfit or look that I'm trying achieve, weather it be a themed party or just the mood that I currently am in. I have only had my outfit enhanced or changed based on the amount of choices that i given, weather I it takes a jacket or head to toe garments. I have always been treated with the utmost respect rather then being sized up for what is in my account. & A hidden gem when it comes to custom shirts also. Not your run in the mill screen print shop. In addition to getting exactly what i wanted for my shirts I learned a great deal about custom work to my shirts & look forward to getting more work done there knowing that I have a peace of mind with quality & a great price. read more

i frequent kensingiton market on a weekly basis for one thing or another. the staff was helpful,friendly and knew exactly what you were talking about with out fully having to explain yourself.(i really like that) while there i saw a really funny printed tshirt however it was not in my size. i inquired about it and the said i could have one made for me in my size. i thought it best to think it over. the staff let me know the best time to get a shirt printed would be around 10.30-11am. so that is when i arrived. i said goodmorning to the first person i saw the store behind the cash, i did not get the response i expected 'go talk to one go the girls in the back or something, there are two of them there just go look'. i was confused, so i listened. i recognized the one lady from the previous day and was immediately comforted by the fact i knew i would get better customer service. she and another gentleman got to work right way on my shirt all the while the angry man from the front of the store berated his his staff and customers with pure ignorance and anger. after my shopping i was having a coffee sharing my experience with someone at a cafe in the market i learned that the angry man is the part-owner and that this is not new behavior. it is really not a safe work environment for that poor staff...the man is downright abusive...kudos to the staff for exceeding excellence in such a hostile environment. read more
