As if the sauces had been sitting out all day (since there were rarely any customers). There is a "home-made" hot sauce that one of the Chefs created and makes on his own - I thought that was really cool and considered buying it to support his business but... the hot sauce was not that great, sorry. I love love love love this place! My old coworker took me to this little hole in the wall, and I'm addicted! My favorite dish is the pollo en fricase with arros con grandules....oh so good. The chicken just comes off the bones like nothing, and the rice with the fried plantanes together make a jubilee of flavors in your mouth! A little secret that one may not know about is their hot sauce! woo hoo! Drizzle that all over the plate...mmmm. This place is cozy and has a very mom and pop feel to it, which I like. They also have an assortment of Puerto Rican drinks that I have yet to try. Everyone living in OC should try this place out at least once. Bought a groupon 40$ for 4 people, they accepted the groupon even tho we only had 3 in our party. We were told to order 4 entrees or at least 3 and 1 appetizer, which is fair. We ordered 4 entrees, beef stew, pork mofongo, stuffed plantain, and beef enchiladas plate. Food came out hot and quick, everything was delicious! My mofongo was definitely a favorite! My siblings loved their food as well. We end up with 2 to go boxes full of food! The service was so friendly and its a family business! Love it! Will not come back. Came here at about 11 am and ordered beef gorditas with a side of rice and beans. I presume the rice and beef were from the previous night. The beef had that day-old flavor and didn't seem seasoned at all. The rice was also old and it was hard. Beans were okay. I find it insulting that any business would use day-old food. Lived in Cypress for almost 20 years, and passed by this place a million times without giving it a thought, but my family and I were missing out on a hidden gem just half a mile away. If you were like me and kept passing it up, this is a must-try if you are into any sort of Latin food. I'll admit the decor is underwhelming, but it looks like they are more into take-away (we sat in a largely empty room, but saw at least 10+ people come and go for take-away). I've never had Puerto Rican food, so I asked the prompt and friendly waitress (I forget her name, sorry!) what's their specialty, or what's ordered the most, I believe it was the #9 from the PR-side of the menu. A bowl of some of the best, most tender and juicy beef I have ever had in my life, sitting on a bed of banana, and with flavourful rice and beans on the side. Didn't really understand the banana aspect, but it was well cooked and didn't hurt the dish at all. My only complaint was that there didn't appear to be any spicy dishes - I'm half-Mexican, and crave the heat. Immediate greeting from hostess, immediate seating at dinner-hour, friendly staff, quick turn-around on orders (we waited maybe 15 at most), fair prices, unique and delicious food, good portion sizes. I have experienced better, much much better. I really hate to give them only 2 stars but I feel I have to stick to my guns and tell it like it is. Ordered a bean and cheese burrito for lunch on Monday. Beans were good, but the salsa make it better. (It doesn't come with any sauce inside. A little bland.) Tonight my wife had the chili colorado plate and I had the super beef burrito (carne asade). My food was not even warm, almost cold. My wife's food (I tasted it) was just so-so. It was also bizarre to hear a band rehearsing in the kitchen while we were eating. Not a good band either... So, the quest for a good Mexican food place in or near Cypress continues. Best Puerto Rican Food in California. Period. This place has 1/2 Mexican; 1/2 Puerto Rican menu. I have not tried any of the Mexican, so this is for the PR menu alone. Location is simple, nothing fancy. Some Puerto Rico maps, and doodads on the walls, glass on the tables for ease of cleaning, but you don't come here for ambiance, you come here for authentic PR food. The mofongo (green plantain mashed with garlic and topped with meat of choice and served with a broth) is fantastic and worth the price of admission. I get it with pork. Better than some I've had in PR. As any PR in CA knows very hard to find a place in CA that serves mofongo. They also have a great variety of all the "typical beach kiosco food treats", alcapurrias (fritters with meat), pasteles (PR tamales), empanadillas with beef or cheese, fried potato balls (mashed potates filled with beef and breaded and fried), and today they had bacalaitos (cod fritters) as a special. All awesome. They have a sampler platter that lets you taste it all, but bring friends bc that is a lot of food. They also have tostones (green plantains) and maduros (sweet ripe plantains), arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas, typical for Christmas), pernil (roasted pork), canoa ( literally a canoe made of a split sweet plantain filled with ground beef and covered in cheese). Very reasonably priced and everything I've had has been delicious. People drive from LA and San Diego when they have to get their PR food fix. read more

I have lived minutes away from this place for many years, yet have never tried it until recently. I am always up for trying new and different foods so I was very excited when we came in and browsed the menu! They had so many things I have never heard of before, including imported sodas like Kola Champagne and Coconut! We ordered the mini nachos with beef to start. It was a pretty good size for only $3 and some change. The guacamole sauce was delish! Next was the sampler platter and beef mofongo relleno. I love all things made with plantains and yucca so this place was like heaven to me. The mofongo is smashed plantains mixed with a lot of garlic, olive oil and pork rinds. It can be topped with beef, chicken or pork. It was very different because I have never really had plantains in such a savory, garlicky dish. The sampler plate was so fun to eat. It consisted of deep fried potato ball stuffed with meat, empanadas, tamales, fried plantains, smashed plantains! Cutting open everything was like a suprise :) My favorites off the plate were the tamale type things. There was a deep fried one and a softer one. I was told the maza was made out of plantains. I am going to go out on a limb here and say these may be better than Salvadoran tamales(corn maza but wrapped in a banana leaf, much softer/moister than Mexican tamales). I would like to let everyone know how dissapointed I was with Big Eds. At first I was a bit skeptical about the place because of the whole half Mexican half Puertorican thing. For example, do they use the same rice and beans for both types of food? Puertoricans cook these two very differently than Mexicans do, but I was dying for some puertorican food and decided to give it a shot anyways. I had the arroz con bistec encebollado y tostones. The tostones were horrible, not done right and the size of a Hersheys Kiss. The Bistec wasn't that much better either, you could tell immediately that it was very low quality beef. The rice was actually pretty decent, not great though. Before I left I asked them if they ever make any special dishes like carne frita or carne guisada and they told me that they just stick to the menu, so yet another let down. I was really hoping that this place would be good since I was born and raised in San Juan, PR and would love to have a place I can always go to when I miss that delicious home cooking. Oh, well! I guess I'll have to keep checking out some other puertorican restaurants. Till then I'm sticking with the Cuban ones!! read more

Very great food I love to eat everything here since I'm half mexican and puerto rican same as the restaurant LOL The food is always hot the service is a good experience. My boyfriend loves it here too especially drinking the Malta. The chicken mofongo is awesome very juicy. Everything else is so good the wet burrito's are the biggest in town. The serving size is good everything is nice here. The ambiance is clean and fresh. This is the only Puerto Rican place in Cypress and it's excellent ok I recommend it. My big PR/Mex family drives from all areas of So CA for family meals - from Ladera Ranch, Costa Mesa, Anaheim, Alhambra, San Fernando & even Simi Valley, the PR food is THAT good and reasonably priced. Arroz con Gandules is my kids' favorite, we order it TO GO for holidays - the large tray serves a large group of 20+ and if you're lucky, leftovers! Another few favs: Pastelillos - cheese turnovers (meat avail but we prefer cheese) Relleno de papa - potato balls - stuffed potatoes w/well-seasoned meat Arroz Con Pollo - ckn and rice - so good but only avail on special occasions Bistec Encebollado - steak w/grilled onions - adults especially like this one platanos - plantains - both types are good, one is sweet & the other salty, order the 50/50 split for the best of both! I only travel the distance for PR food, but my kids like the burritos too. The service is friendly and the atmosphere casual. Wish I can give them 3 1/2 stars for "blah" service and appearance but, the food is absolutely wonderful. I have tried many things on the menu, the chicken fricassee is my favorite. The service is mediocre. I don't get the impression the waitresses like their jobs, nor, do they care to provide great service or repeat customers. The dining area is just one big room with tables and chairs, there was a slight attempt to decorate with Caribbean pictures. The TV is blaring and there's a stuffed animal/grab vending machine in the dining area. I would give the bathroom one star as it doesn't appear to get much attention.
