My husband and I took the pasta cooking class with Celio this evening. We had such a great time. He has worked as a chef in the North End of Boston his whole life and now has decided to teach us how he does his magic. WOW!!! I've spent so much money on fresh mozzarella and fresh pasta... not anymore!!! He showed us how easy it is to make it ourselves. Not only did we make a great friend in Celio, we made new friends from the class. This was the first cooking class I've done in Boston, but definitely not the last with this chef! Celio and his wife helped us prepare a delicious spread of seasonal pastas with just the right amount of education and enough freedom to really learn from the class. My wife and joined for the Sushi making class with Augusto. We had such a great time we asked a few questions about the Italian course afterwards. Everyone had left but in minutes Celio was teaching how to make homemade mozzarella and burrata and let us take home +10 serving at no cost. Later we booked a private event for 5. I surprised my boyfriend with the "learn to make fresh pasta" class and he was so happy! It was an amazing class with Celio! He was educational, funny, and kept the conversation light. He did enough education without boring us, but kept us asking questions and wanting to learn/know more. The food was so yummy and we wanted to bring Celio home with us. My boyfriend and I recently went to Celio's Italian Dinner with Tiramisu Finale, and it was one of the best evenings in my college life so far. I purchased the classes for myself and my boyfriend for his birthday, and he was absolutely amazed by the class. We cook together a lot, but the class exceeded my expectations in a very good way! We had so much fun while learning! During the dessert, Celio lightened up a candle and the whole group sang Happy Birthday song. The atmosphere was indescribably kind and relaxing! Celio is an amazing teacher. He teaches you not the exact amounts of ingredients that you have to obtain, but rather the feeling and the texture of the food you are cooking. That is so useful! My girlfriend bought us a class for Christmas with Celio learning how to make pasta and it was by far the best present of 2018. We had such an amazing time learning all about the ingredients and Italian language used for what we were making it felt like such an authentic experience. Celio was extremely personable and amusing so the laughs never stopped while really learning how to prepare an excellent meal. The quality of the food was out of this world I could not believe we all made it in a class setting with a few simple directions. I had the most wonderful time making fresh pasta with a group of strangers led by chef Celio. We walked in and were greeted with complimentary wine! What a nice surprise. We made 3 types of pasta from scratch: butternut squash and ricotta tortelloni, fettuccine, and gnocchi. Nothing can compare to fresh pasta and chef Celio even paired them each with a different sauce. For our appetizers, we hand pulled our own mozzarella bocconcini for our salads. He also amazed me by making Parmesan bowls right in front of us to put our salads in. I had no idea it was that easy to do, mind blown. As if that wasn't enough, we made tiramisu for dessert to finish the night. I can't rave about this experience enough and look forward to coming back with friends and family. This would be perfect for a birthday or team building. Bonus: vegetarian friendly. I personally am not but I loved how inclusive this class was for vegetarians while still being delicious. I've always been wary of cooking classes because 70% of the time, I can't eat what we cook being a vegetarian. However, I found the Vegetarian Italian cooking class on the SelfUp website and was so excited to try it! Our class was in the South End (lots of parking available) and we were anxious to make some homemade Italian food. There were drinks (wine!) and small apps when we got there and then we got started with the class. The instructor, Celio, made the pasta dough (you have to make a lot for a class of 15), but he showed us how to make it. The first pasta we made was a tortelloni (a larger tortellini) with a homemade ricotta filling. We got to roll and stuff them, which was cool! Then we put them to the side and got started on the next one which was linguini. Next we made a ricotta based gnocchi (found I like this much better than potato based ones). Finally, we did the beet spaghetti. Once we prepared all the pastas, we made our own individual tiramisu. This was our favorite part! We let them sit for an hour while we prepared homemade mozzarella from cheese curds to make a salad. Finally, we sat down for dinner (with our salads that we prepared) while Chef Celio put the pasta dishes together. The first dish was the tortelloni with a puttanesca sauce (SO GOOD!). The second was the ricotta based gnocchi with a brown butter sage sauce (I literally could not stop eating this). Next up was fettuccine alfredo, which was Josh's favorite. Our whole group was so full after these that we didn't cook the beet spaghetti and instead got to take bags of it home. We finished off the evening with our tiramisu. The whole night was SO much fun. We think it's a great date night activity, but also great for team building. Loved every second and we didn't want it to end. AND we left full! Could not have been better. Chef Joe Roy Pendarvis gumbo class is the real deal. I lived in New Orleans. I know gumbo! What Chef Roy teaches you to make is the real deal...full stop! Not only was the gumbo delish, but it was a thoroughly pleasant evening talking his youth, his travels and the culture of the Gulf Coast. Those who live north of the Mason-Dixon line have no idea about how different bayou country it is from the stereotypic TV view of the "South". Furthermore, he has perfected the gumbo recipe to the fewest moving parts to give you a chance of reproducing what he can make. I especially like the way he makes the roux...a mysterious but key ingredient that is origins is wrapped in the mists of time.... With his techniques, you have a fighting chance of success. I took the Italian Brunch class with Celio Pereira, which focused on salad, homemade mozzarella, pasta, and tiramisu. I've always been too intimidated to attempt mozzarella or pasta from scratch, but Celio made it SO simple. Even though the class was large (~20 people), he gave each person individual attention and had us all working together by the end. I still can't believe how incredible everything turned out. With a combination of demonstration and practice, followed by plenty of time for tasting (my personal favorite), I really understood how all of the steps came together to form the restaurant-quality finished product. And I *really* mean restaurant quality. It was to DIE for - it would make anyone's Italian grandmother proud. After just a few short hours, I feel fully equipped to tackle my own Italian brunch, start to finish. Celio's bubbliness and attention to his students is really an experience you cannot miss.
