My husband and I had the best time here enjoying the romantic Italian cooking class. Chef Gary was personable, patient and answered everyone in our classes questions. They thought of everything! There were even some snacks (cheese, meats, and focaccia) to start and the water and soft drinks were free. It was set for 5 couples but one didn't show. My husband didn't know anyone before hand but quickly chatted and talked em with everyone. The pace of everything was great. We made dessert first. Then we made the salad with from scratch burrata cheese, marry me chicken and homemade fresh pasta. It was truly the best experience. The dessert was a layered red velvet cup with mascarpone cheese. It was heaven! The class was hands on and the staff were all so friendly. The space was clean and welcoming. Two bathrooms were inside the kitchen area. The menu can change per class so be sure to book what you like best. They offer a variety of classes and is not just for couples if you do the classic cooking class. Worth the price, hands down. So glad we came here and got to experience this. We will be back for sure! read more

I went to an italian date night class in Boston and loved the mix of pre-made food and hands-on cooking. We got demos for everything that wasn't made by us but enjoyed the foods that our chef chose for us to make, such as the burrata! We had wine, cheese, meat, and focaccia when we got there and made our dessert, burrata, and pasta before assembling the whole meal. There was plenty of food to take home and we left stuffed! Our class happened at the start of a snow storm so only about 14-16 out of 20 people came which helped create a more intimate setting. read more

Amazing cooking class experience at Selfup! Chef Gary was great. The highlights for me were making homemade fettuccine (so good!!) and burrata. We made a whole meal in the class, ranging from salad to dessert, & were able to sit down and feast on everything at the end of the class. Chef Gary encouraged everyone to participate & the class was perfect for all cooking skill levels. Selfup provided refreshments & apps to nibble on while cooking which was perfect. We met some lovely people in our class & would totally recommend Selfup! read more

We've taken 2 classes here so far and have had an amazing experience both times. The first time was the Italian cooking class, and the most recent time this weekend was the French Steakhouse class. Both were excellent and you learn a lot, but definitely have different vibes. The Italian class was super lively and there was a lot for everyone to help out with. I forgot the name of the Chef who was the lead that night but he was helpful and funny! Chef Ed and Chef Jojo were a great duo who did the most recent French Steakhouse class we did. Chef Ed was extremely knowledgeable and super friendly! This class was a smaller size too so it was personable, whereas the Italian class was pretty large, which there was nothing wrong with at all, just a different energy! During the French steakhouse class we didn't help AS much as I remember during the Italian class, but like I said we still learned a lot! One thing to note is if you take this class in the evening, you're cooking and prepping everything first obviously so you won't get to eat until later in the night. Thankfully, they do provide small apps to munch on when you get hungry, so that was great! Not to mention the wine and soft drinks you helped yourself to! You definitely work up an appetite by the end, and it's really rewarding when you finally sit down and eat what you've been watching and making all night! The food was delicious both times and it's a full dinner with an appetizer, main, and dessert! Overall, my fiancé and I love the SelfUp cooking classes and recommend them to everyone! We're already signed up for another one in the future!! read more

A group of friends and I (4 couples total) booked the Romantic Italian Date Night class and had the BEST time! It was such a great hands on (but not overwhelming) way to hang out with friends, meet new people and eat good food. The homemade pasta melted in my mouth, so much so that I requested the recipe after class so I can make it at home! Chef Gary and his team were very professional, attentive and fun! My friends and I can't wait to book another night - maybe Mexican! Thank you Selfup for a memorable night! read more

Two friends and I booked an Italian cooking class of pastas and tiramisu. Chef Ed Kelley and Valentino were amazing and instructions and hands-on participation. They had wine/sodas, cheese, and salami for all the guests which I thought was a great touch and snacks because we had the actual dinner after 3 hours. I had a lot of fun. Only feedback is to have digital recipes sent to participants (we took photos on our phones instead). read more

Oh how FUN! This is perfect for someone like me, who enjoys cooking but has no idea what they're doing :) I came here with colleagues for a corporate work event. We did the "Italian dinner" class where we made different types of pasta & dessert. The chef did a great job explaining the process of how everything is made. The marsala sauce he made for us was TO-DIE-FOR. I wanted to eat it as a soup, it was that good! The ravioli we made was my favorite; soft pillowy dough filled with the most delicious creamy ricotta filling. Also, did I mention the drinks were flowing during this whole class? I would definitely do this class again and/or others. I can't wait to try to make this at home. This was a great time if you're looking for something different to do and also a great event for large groups! read more

I came here as part of a work trip in the Boston location. We chose the french themed which included a Niciose salad, steak and roasted veggies and creme brulee. I thought the whole setup was fun and engaging. Great chef and a fun way to spend the evening. The food was pretty good as well! Looks like it was high quality and fresh. I felt like it maybe took a little longer to cook and prep than I hoped but all in all it was fun. Id recommend read more

The prior reviews have got to be bots or paid reviews. Came here for a romantic Valentines Day date and were jammed into a singular table of 30 people with no room for elbows. So many people that you didn't even get a chance to cook. The chef made the salmon with "assistance" from a student who was responsible for salting the sauce. Four pasta machines alone meant the chef did majority of the pasta making while we watched. For 120$ per person, not including the bottle of wine we paid for, it was a joke. Save your money. read more

TDLR - very beginner class. No individual cooking stations for you and a partner. One stand mixer, one burner, one of everything basically. You won't actually make everything that's listed. Chef speed talked and also talked too much about himself. Spend the money if you want a night out doing something different but you won't learn much. We booked the Romantic Italian Date Night cooking class. On the menu was burrata salad, focaccia bread, marry me chicken, angel hair pasta in a butter sage sauce, seasoned roasted vegetables, red velvet parfait. I'll break each down below: We learned how to make burrata from scratch which was really cool but it was watching 90% hands on 10%. The burrata was rubbery and freezing cold because they sat in an ice bath until they were ready to be cut and served. Not appetizing, which is a shame because I love burrata. Focaccia bread - it was already made, they didn't even speak about it, no recipe, no nothing. It was amazing but it would've been amazing to have been sent home with a recipe since we didn't make it. It was paired with a yummy dipping oil and when someone asked for the recipe, he was given a vague answer. Marry me chicken - it was bland and not seasoned. Tasted like heavy cream with chicken. Angel hair pasta with butter sage sauce - we did not make this. We made fresh spaghetti - very cool and ended up tasting great. We mixed our own dough and had to wait for other people to roll out their dough using the one machine which was a waste of time it took so long. The spaghetti was boiled and served in a marinara sauce that was made ahead of time and we learned nothing about how to make that either. It tasted good. We didn't make angel hair and we didn't make or taste a butter sage sauce which I was looking forward to since it's different. Vegetables are vegetables - not much to it. They made (ahead of time) cannellini beans in a tomato sauce. Again no information about it, how to make it, etc it was just put in front of us in bowls at the table. Red velvet parfait - we did not make this either. There were premade red velvet cookies and we assembled individual red velvet tiramisus. We learned how to make the mascarpone cream by watching someone do it, not hands on. There was no sweet raspberry jam or chocolate sprinkles. It was not yummy. They had complementary soft drinks, red wine and white wine which was a nice touch. Class descriptions need to be more upfront about what you will make and the class needs to stick to the menu. The chef, John Peredina, spent probably 1.5 hours total of the 3 hours time during the class talking about his career and prior classes he's done - ego is too big for an interactive classroom setting where we need to learn and cook. A little background is great but enough - talk about the food. It's no wonder we didn't make everything as according to the menu. We ended up getting rushed through segments and he took over most hands on parts. We were about 12 people in the class I can't imagine one bigger and getting anything accomplished because we barely did. The class space needs improvements as individual stations for groups of 2-4. People would pay more for a setup like that and a focused menu. read more

Came here from out of town for a corporate event and was blown away by the combination of efficiency, productivity and fun packed into a 3+ hour experience. Generous pours of house wine and large portions of high quality Italian food (think Buca di Beppo, Maggianos, or other respectable high volume chain, but with the fun of cooking it). Was most impressed with how the session really was able to get everyone involved and turned out finished product that we could take pride in eating, while being comparable in price to a regular dinner. Can't wait for our next visit ! read more

My friend and I had a wonderful experience with our dumpling course instructed by the bubbly and personable Rudy! Wine and other soft drinks are offered as part of the course. From the beginning he was informative and friendly. Directions were clear and straightforward with the option of asking for more clarity. We know now why this class is gaining in popularity. Divided into groups we worked in shrimp, pork, beef, and chicken individually in the case of allergies in which nobody in our group had. Everything was kept sanitary in between letting the dough set and making the dumplings. Rudy freely let me to use items from his kitchen to make a specialized sauce that he loved! Highly recommend taking this particular course and am interested in trying some of the others offered here! read more

Chef Rudy Donalson was absolutely amazing. He was fun, light hearted, and made us feel as ease. His hands on teaching was great. Technics and explanations as to the - who - what and why of cooking was engaging. He made everyone feel like a pro and we enjoyed the experience with him tremendously. His sous chef was professional and patient. Even the owner popped in on us to make sure we got pics and were having a good time. Appetizers, wines and music was festive. I had the chance to take the Italian cooking class twice. First was with my boyfriend and Rudy as the instructor. The second time was with my sister and John as the instructor. Rudy is pleasant and has fun in his class. I found the pace of his class to be far too slow and ultimately felt hangry by the time we sat down and ate. Rudy was solo in my class, so maybe if he had some help it could make a big difference for him? I personally found the chicken to be a bit tough, pasta sauce and Marsala sauce were a bit bland. The plating of the food probably didn't help because it looked like it was just put on the plate without much thought since it was family style. Between the two classes, I would choose to take John's class again. John was personable, knowledgeable and you could tell he was there to have a good time. I personally found the pace of the class and the quality of the food (that was prepared in advance) to taste better. The pasta sauce, Marsala sauce, and chicken were all perfectly seasoned and tender. The pace of food preparation by the class to eating time was great. John's sous chef and front of house help were amazing and kept things moving along! It was great to have a balance of participating/learning, but also feeling pampered by the chefs. The plating of the food looked as though you were eating in a restaurant which I thought was a really nice touch given the family style. The chefs made fettuccini to die for, and I really enjoyed the demonstration of how to make the Marsala sauce. Check out this business. This type of class was perfect for a date night or a fun night with friends. I was bummed when my sister got the same class I had already done, but the experience and food was very different between instructors. read more

Call me CHEF because this girl now knows how to make some delicious pizza ha ha ha :-) Took the pizza making class with chef Joe Gatto through SelfUp and had such an amazing time! Chef Gatto really did a phenomenal job of showing us how making pizza is not at all intimidating but accessible for all learners and pizza enthusiasts. I loved how his pizza recipe is easy to make and can be made with simple ingredients that we all probably have in our fridges. In less than two hours, Chef Gatto was able to take all of us step by step through the process of making pizza and the final product was our own individual pizzas to take home! His instructions were clear and he was accessible throughout the class to provide a helping hand or answer some of our questions. I loved how interactive and super fun he made the class--reassuring me that making pizza can literally be made by anyone. He even brought some complementary salad and wine for our class to enjoy as we were waiting for our pizzas to cook on the grill. It is simple gestures like that that really show that he is very passionate about teaching others about food! This class was a blast and I feel like I learned so many tangible skills that I can use in the kitchen. I can't wait to replicate what I learned in this class in my own kitchen--I just hope that it comes out just as good as it did during class! read more

Great couples date night here for Italian Night with Tiramisu finale. It was a great combination of fun, informative, but low-key. This is definitely the place to go with a big group of people where everyone can do more or less work as they'd like. It's also really nice in that there were nearly 18-20 people that fit comfortably here. I feel like most cooking classes are way too large or too small -- great middle ground here. The chef/mastro Celia was entertaining, flexible, and a good adult-focused teacher. He even ran down the street to Whole Foods to get another 8 bottles of wine to accommodate our thirsty crew! The food was amazing. We made mozzarella for caprese salad, four types of fresh pasta (tortelloni, spaghetti, fettuccini, and gnocchi), and tiramisu. It was tons of food and had four different sauces. The space is good for the number of people. It's in a nice location near SOWA with a parking lot with decent availability of spaces right next to the building. The space itself seems like a hardwood flooring by day/SELFUP space by night, but it's totally fine for the needs of the program. I'll definitely be coming back to try some of the other classes and bringing friends. read more

A truly enjoyable and memorable class! On Sunday at noon we took the Christmas Cooking Class & Brunch with Chef Celio at the VIA Residents in the Seaport. The class started on a casual note, with attendees getting glasses of wine and chatting. A few minutes in, the Chef started us off by asking us each to wash our hands and put on an apron. Then we spent the next 4 hours watching the chef explain the dishes and getting to try some of the prep ourselves. And eating, of course! We enjoyed making turkey & cream cheese-stuffed tortelloni (in festive red, green, and white colors), honey goat cheese-stuffed artichokes, and creme brulee (which we really didn't work on at all since we were crunched for time at the end). All of the food was downright delectable. The VIA is a luxury apartment building, so this was far from a restaurant kitchen. There wasn't even an oven or stove. However, Chef Celio, personable & quick with a story or joke, performed with grace under pressure when some of the outlets weren't working. Because of this, there were some periods of downtime, but the drinks and couch areas allowed us to lounge in comfort. I liked that the class was interactive and informative but didn't put pressure on anyone who didn't want to perform a task or didn't feel comfortable cooking a particular thing. I came away with some tangible cooking tips and ideas for our next dinner party! read more

Learned how to make fresh pasta with Chef Celio. He is a wonderful and charming instructor who made the entire process look effortless. I booked this class for a date night, and it was a success! We also enjoyed salad, wine, appetizers, and tiramisu. I usually feel empty without eating meat, but this vegetarian meal was delicious and filling. My family and I have attended 2 classes now, it's that great if an experience! I had wanted to learn to make dumplings, so for my birthday, my boyfriend and my parents signed up for the dim sum class. We started with a shrimp tempura appetizer, then made spring rolls, shrimp shumai, and chicken gyoza. Phenominal food! When I make food at home, it never comes out that good. The food was prepped in bowls for all of the chopping, leaving the more complicated tasks for us to learn and master. We loved the class so much that we returned less than a week later for the italian course. SO GOOD. We started with charcuterie, made fresh mozzarella, prepped tiramisu for dessert, and stretched pasta for chicken marsala and ravioli. Both courses showed me just how easy it is to start making these things from scratch at home, so I've already added spring rolls to my weekly grocery plans. Sorry I don't have any of the dim sum photos on hand (my mom took those!). There isn't a very visible storefront, so trust your maps app and walk to the address, it's there.
