Corporate team buildings have been a mixed bag for me over the years, but our event at Shiso Kitchen completely exceeded every expectation. I never imagined a team building could be this good! From the moment we arrived, the energy was warm, welcoming, and perfectly organized. The hands-on cooking experience was not only fun and engaging--it was the ideal way to collaborate and connect. Working toward shared deliverables (that we then got to enjoy together!) created a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie that's hard to replicate in a traditional setting. The Shiso Kitchen team made everything seamless and elevated the experience with their expertise, hospitality, and thoughtful touches. If you're looking for a unique, meaningful way to strengthen your team, this is it. Highly recommend! read more

We've driven by this place often and have been meaning to try it for a while - upon looking online and snagging a spot for the southern Spanish cuisine cooking class, we were ecstatic to get to come by! The booking process online is a little manual as you have to secure your spot via email, but Jess responds pretty quickly and the as long as you're early enough once the schedule is released, booking is pretty simple. I would advise coming with a bit of food in your stomach beforehand - you don't get to eat really until the very end of the class so we were quite hungry leading up to the meal. You are allowed to bring your own booze/wine if you wish though and there's luckily a liquor store very close by, so we got a bottle before class started! The cooking experience itself was very smooth. We were taught the proper way to hold a knife and partook in most of the preparation for the ingredients. Jess also explained each step in detail and it overall seemed even doable to replicate the recipes at home which was awesome! Everything tasted super fresh and delicious when we finally got to eat and I'd say we were decently satisfied on the portions - the group finished everything and the plates were clean so I honestly think we could've done with a bit more food, but taste wise things were fantastic. We ended up with a potato salad, some bread with tomato puree on top, paella, and a rich hot chocolate dessert. A good variety of food! The price is a little steep I think, but I found it to be a nice treat and a very fun experience. Huge shoutout to Jess for a fun class and handling all the backend as well with managing reservations and such. I wouldn't mind coming back in the future with a group of friends for a special occasion! read more

Great class for a private group of friends or coworkers! One of the differentiating factors of Shiso Kitchen is the ability to pick your menu and BYOB. Our group loved the flexibility to choose what interested us most for our session. Jess is so friendly, responsive, and informative. She taught us helpful tips & tricks in the kitchen and gave a great background on the area and culture. The food was delicious, and everyone had a great time! Pro tip: Eat a light snack before class because the smell of the delicious food will make your tummy grumble. read more

I live around the corner and walk by Shiso Kitchen at least twice daily to get to the nearby BlueBikes station. For months, I would look in the window as I passed and watch everyone drinking wine, cooking, and having a blast. Well after 3 years and a nudge by the bf, I decided it would be a cool Christmas present. I teamed up with a friend couple and we looked to set a date. Before COVID the schedule was packed tight, which speaks to the incredible offering Jess provides. After 6 months (4 of which they were closed), we finally picked a date and the 4 of us chose the Provencal menu. It was a very relaxed setting and Jess made us feel right at home. The COVID world we live in meant that we had to wear masks at arrival, get contactless temperature readings, and frequently wash or sanitize our hands. Jess outlined the cleaning protocols that took place prior to our arrival, such as wiping down all surfaces that we would touch, and having a HEPA filter to continuously clean the air. While inside, we were not required to wear masks, though Jess did when she was within proximity to us or handling the food that we would eat. Each group/class is limited to 4-6 people that you already know and interact with (roommates, significant others, family, etc). I was totally fine with this approach and felt that the right precautions were taken. Jess is a super knowledgeable chef and also taught at Le Cordon Bleu before deciding to open the place. She was able to answer all of the questions we had, whether they were relevant to what we were making or just general cooking tricks and tips. One of our friends was particularly impressed by the "right way" to cut a pepper, so sometimes even the most basic tips can be "life changing". The class lasted about 4 hours and the resulting food was delicious. It's such a shame when the bf forgets his lactose pills and you have to eat his dessert too... :) We were provided many wine breaks to chat with our co-attendees and it really made the experience more like an event/hangout; not just a class. I would highly recommend Shiso Kitchen for date nights, family parties, etc., especially now since it will be easier to pick a time slot. We've been cooped up so long, this was just the thing we needed to feel somewhat normal again, even if it's still with a small group. read more

I recently attended a private class for a group of 6. Jess was extremely flexible and professional in coordinating a custom menu and date/time for us to enjoy our experience! It was interesting to learn about proper knife techniques, kitchen safety, and general tips + tricks throughout the evening - I thought this was a big plus! The food, of course, was amazing and SO fun to create. Who knew homemade gnocchi could be so simple? I am really looking forward to recreating these recipes at home! I would absolutely recommend Shiso Kitchen to any group of friends that really make it their own. I feel like I got so much more out of the class since I was able to pick what types of food I wanted to cook with my group. Thanks Jess!! read more

Are you looking for an awesome datenight, or want to learn some sweet chopping techniques to impress your special man (or lady) friend? Then OMG, you have to go here! My husband and I went here for our Valentine's Datenight and had SUCH an amazing time! The space is intimate, so it almost feels like you're cooking in your own home (minus having to deal with clean up). The website showed the menu choices for the night, and Jess had printed recipes for everyone - I've now since distributed my copy to my mother and other friends on the interwebs (sorry, Jess, the lobster risotto was too good not to share). Jess showed us how to break down a lobster to make lobster stock, FROM SCRATCH, because lobster, obvs. That eventually turned into a delicious lobster risotto, which was combo'd with mushroom-pancetta bruschetta. I've since recreated the bruschetta, and you know a chef's recipe is successful when you can do it deliciously from your own home with your own kitchen equipment. We also had a roasted beet, quick pickled onion, and goat cheese salad with a homemade honey-truffle vinaigrette. The piece de la resistance, the vanilla creme brulee, was seriously to die for. Despite how full we were, my hubby had a second helping, not even joking, and he doesn't even like sweets. Jess is wonderful - she's uber charismatic, is obviously a pro in all of her techniques and language, and is very patient and descriptive with everything she does or shows you. She will have you laughing while you whip up something fancy, and you'll know fancy words like chiffonade (making ribbons of basil) and tomalley (lobster insides) to impress your in-laws and food-snob/ food-porn friends. My boyfriend and I went to Jess's Southern Spain class, where we made pan con tomate, Malaga salad, paella, and chocolate a la taza. I had high expectations going into the class with all the positive reviews, and Jess more than surpassed them! I had gotten the class for my boyfriend for his birthday, and he even told me multiple times how awesome of a gift it was and how he can't wait to return! We were in the class with two other couples. We all had varying levels of cooking abilities, but Jess had us all contribute equally and we got to see how everything was made. We left with many cooking tips from Jess (who let you ask her anything!) and confident that we could make the meal on our own. Not to mention, there was plenty of DELICIOUS food to go around so we had a nice meal. Overall the experience was amazing and I would recommend anyone to go! My boyfriend and I are already scoping out future classes to go to! The class is 3 hours long, so I would recommend going with a bottle of wine a person to make sure you can sip during class and enjoy a glass with dinner :). read more

I was pretty excited to do this class, but unfortunately fell ill the day of with a fever. Rather than go and risk exposing others to whatever I've come down with, I figured I'd email hoping they'd understand and let me reschedule. No one wants a sick person in their class, especially sharing food, right? I understand cancellation policies to prevent people from flat out flaking, but thought perhaps there'd be some leniency given the news of coronavirus and health scares happening right now. Unfortunately I was pretty frustrated their only options were to send someone else or cancel completely and lose my class. Super bummed, pretty annoyed, so I guess that's a waste. Better to skip this one until pandemic season is over. read more

Can't recommend this class enough! But calling it a class does not do it justice. It's a hands-on dining experience where you learn, and cook and then eat something you can't believe you cooked (because before you came, could not have done what you did). I cook a good amount and still learned a great deal. What's best about these classes though, is they're intimate. With just 8 people you feel like you're hanging out with friends. My boyfriend and I went twice, two weeks apart, and neither time was there a single person who wasn't fun, which is amazing because usually if you meet 16 people at least one is a dud. OH NO WAS I THE DUD?! Highly unlikely, can't possibly be. I digress. Jess is also as fun of a person as she is a patient instructor. I didn't feel like I was learning as much as picking up on things by doing them, which is great for anyone who hated school but still wants to know things. I recommend this class for: Date nights, friend nights, family nights, solo nights if you're an extrovert and like making new friends, group nights if you're an extrovert who has enough friends to fill a whole class, night out if you're in introvert looking to push yourself out of the house, and anyone I haven't covered in this list. Not kids though (which might be the best part). Anyway. Go to one or more of these. You will not regret your decision. read more

We booked a private cooking class with Jess for my friend's birthday and opted to learn to make sushi. We were a party of five but could have had up to six. It was a wonderful experience overall. Not only did we get to observe Jess prepare and filet a full size fish, she demonstrated the art and technique of making hoso rolls, maki, nigiri and hand rolls! She was extremely helpful in explaining what exactly is sushi grade fish and how to buy, what to look for, etc. What was unexpected, was her sharing some of the old customs and traditions the Japanese have in regards to sushi prep, such as rice being very sacred and needing to be handled just so. We were very intrigued to say the least. She made everything look so easy and we enjoyed watching her work while explaining every step along the way. Then she set us up with our own stations so we could create. Well we struggled with some of the techniques but after a few tries and her help and suggestions we seemed to get the hang of it. Regardless of my rolls and hand roll's appearance, they were delicious. Jess is charismatic and clearly is passionate about her love of food preparation. We had a blast and thoroughly enjoyed the evening. She allowed us to bring out own wine to enjoy that evening as well. My only suggestion, is to come very hungry! So much sushi grade fish (the tuna was melt in your mouth delicious) and delicious ingredients to eat! We were very stuffed! Can't wait to return. read more

I found Shiso Kitchen while I was searching for cooking classes around the Boston area for an office outing. It was very easy to schedule a time with Jess and the pricing was extremely reasonable. The menu options were mouthwatering and we ended up going with the Tuscan Night option. Our group had an amazing time and they are still talking about it 12 hours later. I have heard several comments that go something like, "I keep day dreaming about that gnocchi." Chef Jess had great rapport and had a lasting impression on all of us. She was patient, organized, and extremely knowledgeable. We all enjoyed her hints and "life hacks" that we all got to take home. Every one also loved the fact that she had printed out the recipes of what we made for us to take home. I would recommend this event/school to EVERY ONE! read more

Such a fun, different date night! Attended the Southern Italian Supper on a Friday night with my husband. We were welcomed immediately by Jess when we arrived. The space itself is comfortable and inviting. Jess was a fantastic teacher! She infused equal amounts of knowledge, humor, and professionalism into the class. The whole experience was enjoyable and relaxing (may have helped that BYOB wine is encouraged!) I was thankful for some tips on knife handling and I'm still trying to practice my new found skills at home. Gnocchi was on the menu this particular evening, which I love, but never would have attempted to make from scratch at home. Jess made the whole menu very approachable and not nearly as daunting as I thought it would be. We also got recipes of each of the menu items at the end of the night to take home. The groups are small (about 8), which made it easy to get to know everyone and develop some comradery. The food turned out to be delicious and was nice to share family-style with our classmates over conversation. Best of all, Jess cleaned while we ate. No dishes! We are looking forward to another class together soon. Highly recommended! read more

I took a class here last week with a bunch of pals and we had a blast. Jess is an awesome instructor. It was the perfect blend of good travel stories, food history, and learning proper technique. We did the Tuscany class. If you do this one, make sure you consider the cost of a pasta machine. After you try your own homemade pasta and realize how good it tastes, you will definitely buy one. I bought one ten minutes before writing this. Shiso Kitchen rocks. Can't wait to try a sushi class. read more

I took the Southern Italian Dinner cooking class here as part of a bachelorette party and it was so much fun! We went on a Friday morning for a private event lunch and didn't have trouble finding free street parking right by Shiso - which is pretty good for Somerville. As a group of 5, we all had different levels of cooking experience and Jess did a fantastic job of adapting to that and explaining all the things that we were doing. I personally loved getting to learn how to make gnocchi and chocolate mousse since they always seems so challenging, but now with the experience I'm sure I could tackle them on my own. I would definitely recommend taking a cooking class with a group or friends at Shiso. I'm sure a date night with a significant other would be fun too, but maybe not for a 1st or 2nd date since it felt so intimate. read more

I have been to Shiso Kitchen twice, and I initially discovered it on a friend's recommendation. The first time, there were 8 people in the class. The second time, there was a cancellation so it was just me and my husband. Jess is a fantastic fun high-energy passionate teacher who has some delicious recipes. The atmosphere is great. You don't even have to like cooking that much, as long as you enjoy food and fun. :) Great for just about anything-- a date, special event, or just to hang out! Don't miss out! P.S. Just watch some of the videos that Jess is in to get a sense! read more

I can NOT say enough about Shiso and Jess. I looked on yelp to find a cooking class to do with my mom as a Christmas gift, and we both love sushi, so ventured with the sushi class. The intimate kitchen is so clean and adorable. Walk in and we had edamame for an appetizer and we're given glasses and a wine opener for our wine. The couples we took our class with were so cute and fun. Jess goes through everything: the rice, the fish, the knives, the various types of sushi (and what we THINK is sushi). She is so well trained and answered all of our questions. She made a bunch of different types of sushi we got to try, and then we were set free to create our own. My husband was away on business when we went and when I told him about it, he demanded we go again together. Overall, my mom is STILL talking about the experience. Thank you Jess! THIS IS THE SPOT!! I cannot say enough good things about Jess and this class! My boyfriend and I have done two classes here (tapas, and Italian themed) and are blown away every time. Jess teaches you techniques that stay with you, gives you a background on the meal your cooking, but the most impressive thing is that she keeps it fun and personable. We have now sent 6 of our friends, our parents, and siblings here. This is an absolute must if you have not yet been here! (PERFECT date night activity or small ground activity). read more

Shiso was so awesome. The space is clean, super stylish, and comforting. I felt like I was walking right into my (coolest) friend's kitchen. Jess was wonderful. She is great company and an incredible teacher. She has done an amazing job of transforming the space. Definitely a creative genius! Jess passed on tons of culinary knowledge and tips...and we never once felt like we were in a classroom. AND THE FOOD...She prepared a gluten free, French cuisine menu, which we worked together as a team to execute. Every bite was delicious. From the arugula salad, to the hearty ratatouille, to our amazing soufflé... Overall, crazy amazing experience at Shiso. Learned a lot, laughed a lot and ate...a lot. Can you beat that?! read more

Shiso Kitchen - What a group! - Party & Event Planning Near Me - Somerville, Massachusetts

Jess deserves every one of her 5 stars! What a badass. Classically trained sushi chef, former instructor at Le Cordon Bleu, entrepreneur, and-- most importantly-- someone you really just want to hang out with for a few hours :) We reserved ShisoKitchen for a very low-key bachelorette brunch. We're all into cooking, so I was a little worried we wouldn't learn anything and it wouldn't be worth the money. LOL LOL LOL. From tips like pre-baking your blueberries to get some of the water out to the proper way to cut an onion and ideas for leftover vanilla bean husks, Jess dropped some serious knowledge on us. Our menu consisted of a brunch salad (bacon, goat cheese, greens, honey truffle vinaigrette), blueberry scones, potato chorizo skillet, and orange zest churros. Everything was amazing! I was especially impressed by the scones, which I feel like are usually dry, but these were perfect. The menu was the perfect balance of complicated enough that the recipes were new and different, but simple enough that it'd be easy to recreate any of them at home. For only five people, we managed to come with a lot of food restrictions: a vegetarian, a nut allergy, and someone with a deep, deep hatred of everything vinegar. Jess was really accommodating. In some cases, we omitted things (nut-free brunch). In other cases, she planned for us to prepare things separately (letting people individually add meat to the salad and hash instead of mixing it in, splitting the salad and providing one girl with lemon and olive oil instead of vinaigrette). Jess is a chef though, so it wasn't shocking that her recipes were good. I think the part of the day that I was most pleasantly surprised by was how she handled herself and our group in the kitchen. Her space isn't huge, and it was full of five girls drinking mimosas and asking her every single cooking question we could think of. She taught us how to do things and we did a lot of the prep ourselves, but when we were getting kind of lazy two hours in, Jess was like a ninja-- magically finishing everything that needed to be done like frying the last batch of churros and checking on the scones. I think of how stressed I get when there are people in my kitchen and I am trying to finish ONE dish... I'm not sure how she was so cool and friendly with so many people milling around in her way while she was finishing four separate dishes and timing it so they were all finished at the same time. It was like the best Sunday brunch party ever. Someone else does the shopping, planning, and cleaning, and you just show up with your BFFs and cook a delicious meal together. Jess was friendly and made me feel like we could totally pull off anything in the kitchen. I'm already planning to bring my husband to a group class for my birthday :) read more

I've done a handful of cooking classes, and this was by far the best one I've ever done. Jess is a fantastic teacher (and hilarious). She finds the right balance between teaching and letting us do it ourselves, and she makes you feel comfortable and capable, even if you crack an egg all over the counter (oops). I came here last night for a "Taste of Tuscany" class, and it was educational, delicious, and a lot of fun. Jess taught us better/easier ways to do things I've been doing for years- I can't wait to put my news skills to use! The kitchen is small and intimate (we had 6, I believe the max is 10). Also, Jess offers everyone a glass of wine at the beginning, and if you want more you can BYOB. Just beware that if you choose this class, you will leave 100% convinced that you need your own pasta maker. read more

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was such a wonderful experience! We went for a Night in Tuscany and learned how to make fresh pasta (ravioli and fettuccine), herb crusted pork loin with a grape sauce (easily the best thing I've ever eaten in my life) and a custard dessert (Zabaglione). We also made a caprese salad to go with our meal. The space itself is very clean and organized and really beautiful. Jess (the owner) handmade a lot of the decorations, including the ceiling lights and the aprons. Cooking was so much fun and Jess had lots of great tips and was incredibly friendly and charismatic. My boyfriend and I are both excited to go back soon to learn more! I absolutely recommend this to anyone interested in learning more about cooking. read more

My daughter and I enjoyed a "Night in Paris" at Shiso Kitchen. It was a great bonding experience, and we both learned a lot. Jess is an excellent teacher and had a good sense of balance between showing us stuff and letting us learn by doing. Lots of ready bowls and tools and ingedients -- all the fun of cooking with none of the pesky cleanup! The format of our class was great, because we ended up enjoying a delicious dinner that we had (mostly) prepared. Coq au vin and a light and fluffy chocolate souffle. Yum! Any parent with a teen might want to check this out as a fun activity. (And as a nod to the other reviewers, I can totally see this as a fun datenight too!) read more

I've had two experiences with Shiso Kitchen, and both were fun and delicious! The first time, my then boyfriend (now husband) used a Groupon to attend "An Evening in Paris". Jess led us through the steps of making coq au vin, greens with vinaigrette and chocolate souffle. YUM! She also shared some super helpful tips of the trade, which we were able to easily incorporate into future meals. Flash forward a couple years, and I'm trying to plan something more exciting that a typical dinner out with friends for my 31st birthday. I reached out to Jess, and she quickly replied to let me know that she had a couple of dates open right around my birthday. I choose May 5th, and Jess worked with me to plan a fantastic Cinco de Mayo themed menu with the following dishes: HANDMADE CORN TORTILLAS GARLICKY SHRIMP TACOS with JICAMA & PURPLE CABBAGE SLAW MOLE STYLE SHREDDED CHICKEN TACOS PICO DE GALLO 'SIMPLY the BEST' GUACAMOLE MEXICAN BROWN RICE COCONUT MANGO PUDDING We had 7 people total, and we each took turns working on different tasks under Jess' expert guidance (in between shots of tequila - it's BYOB, and Jess provides the glassware). I went to Shiso Kitchen on a lark; having walked/run past for months and needing to hit a home run for my fiancé's 30th. Well, Shiso Kitchen's Tuscan night with Jess was on point! Not only was the food delicious, the process fun, but we learned and became friends with Jess and our classmates. Afterwards we exchanged info, and kept hanging out with the classmates. Since the visit, we've been trying to come up with another occasion to book a class there as well as making lots of yummy Tuscan cuisine. Not only did we learn, but Jess's teaching style made the recipes feel like second nature when we used them (and embellished a bit) at home. I've been to 4 classes at Shiso Kitchen so far and I've really enjoyed them all. I normally go with a couple of girl friends, but I've even attended one class solo and still had a blast. The classes are always pretty small, and Jess does a great job of getting everyone to work together and mingle. It's a pretty seamless transition, and somehow at the end you sit down to an amazing meal that you helped prepare. Even more impressive than the meal, is that I've found myself actually cooking some of the recipes by myself outside of class and using the general chef tips she dibs out. She is easy to get in touch with via email, and if you have any sort of food allergy just let her know in advance and she can accommodate (tree nut allergy over here). If you have a bachelorette or birthday coming up you can even schedule a private event at Shiso. Bottom Line: You learn something useful, you get to enjoy a great meal, and you don't have to do any dishes.... hurry up and sign up already! read more

If you love cooking (or attempting to cook), eating and most importantly drinking, then I HIGHLY recommend this place!! Shiso Kitchen is a beautiful, cozy kitchen with a phenomenal chef (aka Jess!) that truly is passionate about what she does and takes the time to make sure you're learning some culinary skills as well as having fun. You can participate and be as hands on as you'd like or observe and simply enjoy eating what others have worked so hard to prepare. I organized a private cooking event with a bunch of friends and we cooked a variety of Mexican treats (shrimp tacos, beef tacos and even corn tortillas from scratch! and of course a delicious mango custard). The food was amazing and it definitely was fun to learn new recipes and cooking tricks! FYI it's BYOB so we enjoyed some margaritas with our tacos =) (I haven't been to other cooking classes like at Sur La Table, but I imagine bringing your own booze is frowned upon there...I will definitely be returning to Shiso Kitchen again! read more

The course was a great experience. My husband and I cook at home, so we know some of the basics. Jess was great about teaching to the crowd, so we were able to pickup some new tips and skills. Jess was also very engaging (could ask her ANY questions), and kept the mood lighthearted and fun. And finally, the food was really good, and we had PLENTY to eat!
