Easiest 5 stars ive ever given. We were here for a raclette and fondue class that was after hours, so we were able to shop with no one else in the store!! I loved the cheese. Staff was so kind and answered all of our questions. I left with many many things of cheese! We tried the cookies and chocolates, some premade goods, some shelf-stable things, and of course, cheese. My one complaint was that they did not heat up raclette for us, rather gave us raclette cheese at room temperature. I think it wouldn't have been too much to ask for it to be cooked, since they were able to do that with the fondue. I wish there was a way to do the class without the wine pairing and save a few dollars... I would sign up much more often!! read more

My favorite neighborhood store with the best homemade scones ever. I also love that they fly in authentic French bread from France. Everything tastes so fresh and homemade. As a former Cambridge resident, I have always appreciated the incredible selection and atmosphere at Formaggio Kitchen. This store is next level. If you've never been, please take an hour out of your week and go get familiar. The samples alone is enough of a reason to go. I recently needed to place an order for a large cheese and charcuterie plate but realized I had missed the deadline by a day. I called the store this morning and the person I spoke with was incredibly helpful. It is a long way to travel to Formaggio, so we subscribed to the cheese of the month, delivered to our door. Every month a new collection of cheese and sometimes other treats arrives, and one or two days later there is a webcast class that makes the experience even better. Went here in search of a good pecorino. That's something that's harder and harder to find, especially in comparison to the old days when older relatives would actually get a wheel or a half one imported from Italy, oh was that good! I was visiting a friend nearby and decided to try a pecorino so I asked for their best and it cost around $25 a pound, far more than any other shop in the greater Boston area that I had visited in my quest. Thus I hoped that it would be good. In the first day or two after I bought it and tasted it I thought it was like blue cheese, and not enough like pecorino Romano. I decided to give it a little bit of time. When I tasted it again two weeks later, it was covered in mold! Every side. That really aggravated me. I have been buying pecorino for several decades. Not once did I ever have mold. Shame on Formaggio Kitchen! I won't be going back. read more

Really good quality food, but more importantly really friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Tried the weekend bbq, got in line around 11:20 am and got the ribs and brisket ($26 for 2 meats plus 2 sides.) Found the ribs to be dry and the brisket (cut into cubes) to also be mostly dry/ hard with just a few good pieces. Great concept but the execution was not what I was hoping for. I do like the store and their bakery but the prepared savory food I've had there was also underwhelming. read more

First time to the big Huron shop. Normally, I frequent the South End location. This place has a bit of everything it seems. Bakery, meats, fish, prepared foods, and of course, cheese! The cheese selection is bar none. Can't be beat , at least in Boston anyway. As others have noted, sundries are over priced. The selection of crackers is a little high brow imo. No inexpensive normal crackers. I got 2 cheeses, a diet root beer and a small box of crackers and it cost me $41 after tax. Foolishly, I did not get the receipt. The cheese were only $24 total, so how did I make up the difference? Root beer was $3 and the crackers were $7. Did she charge me for an ice pack? If so, how much? Shawmut Ave doesn't charge for ice. Maybe she made an error and I didn't catch it until later. Anyway, disappointing first experience. But, I'll go back and be sure to check the receipt before I leave. read more

This was my first catering experience with Formaggio Kitchen on Huron Ave. in Cambridge. I ordered a half roasted salmon and macaroni and cheese for a family gathering of ten people . The salmon was a beautiful piece of fish, moist and perfectly flavored with just thin slices of lemon. A delicious ,creamy dill sauce came with the order. The salmon was not heated, which made sense to prevent drying out. I heated to just above room temperature in a 200 degree oven. I ordered the macaroni and cheese warm and put that in the oven with the salmon. The macaroni and dish was also delicious with the right amount of creaminess and a crispy crumb crust. Everyone loved the dishes. I will definitely order this or something else in the future! The delivery service was right on time. read more

There are many things I like about Formaggio but their premade sandwiches are not on that list. The bread is often soggy. If it is a turkey or ham and cheese, there is barely any cheese on it, and mustard or condiment very skimpy. Just sub par sandwich for an above par price. Avoid . They treat their neighbors like garbage. They installed an illegal smoker behind their property which gave me asthma for over a decade. They tell people they can park in your driveway. They lie to you if you have a complaint. They get your review removed if your review is critical. The store itself is overpriced and has limited selection, unlike the grocery store they replaced. The only positives I can think of is that they age their own cheese, and the servicepeople are polite. But that is also true for Wegman's. And you can buy a variety of aged cheeses from any gourmet market. read more

It's so expensive here that I only tend to go when I have a gift card. The BBQ on Sundays in the summer is terrific. The bread is certainly better than what you'd typically find at a larger grocery store. On the whole though, I'm not sure the quality is high enough to justify the prices. For example, their premade sandwiches are neither tasty nor filling. Many of the staff are friendly and willing to help. Ocasionally you will encounter someone with a bit of an attitude though. read more

An upscale, local Whole Foods. Highly curated gourmet food options. If you're looking for a creative gift, party contribution or night-in ammo, Formaggio's is the best. Let's start with the cheese. At any given time there are dozens of cheese options all labeled with fun handwritten descriptions. The cheese staff is very friendly and eager to provide tastings and advice. Even after I've tasted a cheese I'd like to purchase, it is not uncommon for the staff member to say "Let's try one more. I think I can find you one you'll like even better." There's a wide variety of offerings from crackers to jams to honey to flowers. The craft beer area is filled with unique finds. The Instagram account is a great way to find out about fun local happenings like tasting events. When it is nice out on Saturdays, they bring really fun local food options so it is a great place to grab lunch. read more

Went for the first time, moved within walking distance (biking is easier) to the Cambridge location. This, having lived in the SF Bay Area for almost two decades and used to a store there called "Draeger's". Formaggio Kitchen is wonderful, and I didn't even buy any cheese or any ready to eat meals. I went because their website was not clear about their butcher and specialty seafood counter. It was really great, I was able to get filet mignon to cook at home (they cut it from a chateaubriand they had already tied up) and they had some locally harvested razor clams which was a surprise! The butcher (fishmonger?) was very nice and informative and I did not feel rushed at all even though there were a few people waiting and it was close to closing time (I did not abuse this circumstance, rest assured). The quality of the product was superb. Perfect for that "farm to table" type of cooking where you don't put anything in the fridge. Cost is high, this is not star market (star market has its place in the repetoire, and my personal favorite, wegman's) but overall Formaggio Kitchen is a wonderful experience worth going. I think it's a great place to go occasionally to get amazing product for a special night cooking at home and will see if it is something I would do more regularly (walk / bike, def not drive a car there when you have to roll the dice for street parking everywhere in West Cambridge). My experience with Formaggio Kitchen is very juxtaposed to me when the day before I had spent an hour at the whole foods nearby at fresh pond. Whole Foods has that right aroma of a grand Parisian food hall (La Grande Epicerie de Paris) but is decidedly corporate. So I think Formaggio Kitchen has a great place in the community and am grateful for it. One minor point, not their fault is that there are no bike racks nearby the entrance so it's not clear where to park one's bike when making a trip. read more

I LOVE this shop. They have all sorts of produce, imported foods, and specialty meats and cheeses. I came here specifically to get my hands on some iberico to gift, and they had two different kinds on hand. The staff explained the differences to me and were super patient while I was selecting my meats. I told staff that I would be air traveling, and they vacuum sealed the iberico for me! Absolutely awesome customer service! They offer cheese samples too, and there was a lady doing a chocolate demo when I walked in. They have shelves and shelves of goods with a lot of customers, so it does feel crowded. I wish we had one of these shops in SC. read more

I bought a Babette Table Spicy Sopressata on July 1st 2023 that had an expiration of 07/07/2023. I had two bites of the Sopressata on the evening of July 1st and got violently sick to my stomach for about 9 hours. The meat tasted strongly of ammonia. I brought the remains back to Formaggio and spoke with two managers about it. Of course they were sorry and refunded my money, but I didn't get the impression that they cared much or that they had any controls in place to prevent it from happening to someone else. I would have excused it as a "one-off", but I got a bad case of food poisoning and when I purchased the item among others, another person shopping nearby spoke up to the workers behind the cheese counter and exclaimed that a bunch of yogurts in the dairy section had expired "Sell By Dates". I have lived in the vicinity of Formaggio Kitchen for over 40 years and it has always had exceptional foods. I was told by an employee that the group of Formaggio stores was purchased by a new owner as of the 1st of 2023. I will not shop there anymore as there are many alternatives in the area that I have frequented over the years with no issues, Whole Foods, Pemberton Farms and Wilson's Farms among others. I went in looking for a 2 to 3 pound wedge of 2-year Parmesan for a cheese display. Was told I had to choose from the smaller pre-cut slices on display. They had the cheese I wanted, but they absolutely refused to cut me a piece from the wheel. The counter person claimed the wheel was too cold and would crumble. First time in 20 years I have heard that excuse. Ordinarily, when I shop here I spend more than 30 minutes and $250 on cheese, salami, etc. Today, I walked out in 5 minutes with what Parmesan I absolutely needed and no other cheese. My favorite place to get groceries. They have great wine and beer selection, delicious cheeses and cured meats, and very tasty olives. They also have great breads and soft pretzels! My review is for the sidewalk BBQ. They do this in the summer months through November, Saturdays and Sundays, 11-2. You can call ahead on Friday to order and pick up. I thought I'd test my luck in the line. Luckily it seemed to be a weekend many people were away so I didn't have to wait too long in line. I got the baby back ribs, cheesy grits, potato salad and collards. I got 1/2 rack of the ribs and 1/2 pints of the sides. Made for two yummy dinners at home. I'd like to go back to try some other items. I'd recommend trying it out. It's hard to find good BBQ up in these parts, but Formaggio does a good job. I will be back. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Bread is cooked on-site. Poilane bread is sold here. Fresh flowers are available. You can park on the street up to two hours for free. read more

BBQ review: Considering the amount of time it took the two 19-year-olds out front to grill a simple order, you'd think that order would come out juicy and tender and super high-quality. Yeah, not really. My spicy pulled chicken sandwich was like eating wet tissue paper, with a boring BBQ sauce that added nothing to the flavor. The boy had the Pearl-in-a-Hole which is nothing more than a giant hot dog of Ron Jeremy proportions in a hard, chewy, hollowed-out baguette. Our friends got the beef brisket and the garlic rosemary lamb sandwiches. The brisket was forgettable but the lamb was fantastic. Only standout item of the bunch. And that includes the weird-tasting corn bread that had way too many spices in it, and the corn on the cob that was far from fresh. So not worth the 30 min line. 1 star. Store review: Like many places in Bostonia, a lot gets packed into a little space. The cheese selection is fantastic as are some of the pastries and chocolates. But I think the South End location is superior not only for being more T-accessible, but also for having an easier layout with more stuff. The SE location also has a great selection of exotic spices, all nicely-labeled. Didn't see anything like that here. For gourmet needs, I'll stick to Savenor's and Dave's Fresh Pasta. 3 stars. read more

I may be misinformed, but I keep hearing this is the best cheese shop in America. I know that there are better shops in England and France, probably canada. But I keep hearing it because I keep saying it. However, they do not have well aged cheddar, which is an astounding hole, so I do not compare them to Canadian stores that will stock it. They do not do potted cheese, but do potted meats, go figure. The lose a star for the their anti-english and australian and welsh cheddar snobbery. they have a range of things I've only heard of, but never seen in a store. which is always interesting. parmasean end sliced. whole foie gras. fish stock. petite fors (can't even spell that). Bouche Noel. really good fruitcake (but not cheap, about 4x what stop and shop sells it for, and it's only 2.5x better here). Their potato chips are the most expensive I've seen, rivalled only by their poor value, lose another star. The have some unbelievable prices. A persimmon? I've never had one, would pay $5 for it, only $2. Some of the cheeses are overpriced, some rare ones under priced to me. plain table salt, overpriced, unbelievably so. but, black, orange, golden, smoked, and pink salt are useful. But, well worth going to educate yourself. And, if you know an area better than they do, then the conversation is very interesting. If you do, not, you might get bruised in conversation, and might get helped a lot. my impression is that it will vary by customer and sever more than it should. Could be 7 star, only 5 tonight. Hope to go back repeatedly. read more
