I've gone back and forth debating on whether or not to write a review and decided that the quality of service I was provided with is just not ok at all. I switched over to Arthur from my regular hairdresser because his prices were high and Arthur's were more affordable. I discussed lightening my overall color with Arthur. I think it's worth noting that during our consultation, I majorly stressed that the main thing I wanted was to keep all of my length and I did not want to compromise my length in any way. I am a licensed cosmetologist myself so while I realize there is a risk taken when lightening hair, I know it can be done safely to maintain hair health. We discussed doing a light "dusting" to the existing layers that I had to get rid of any split ends. A dusting is cutting the most minimal amount of hair possible-less than an inch of hair. When I got home and was able to see what my hair actually looked like color and cut wise- I was sick to my stomach. Roots dark- mid shaft a yellow color and ends a light brown. My hair was compromised. I would've appreciated a toner that evened out the color more. Now this is all bad but I was not prepared for the cut I received. Over 4 inches was cut from the left side of my head while the right side was left significantly longer. I hate to be blunt- but this was the worst haircut I have ever received in my life. I let Arthur know and he immediately offered to fix it and comp the cut. I was sick to my stomach upset about the excessive length he had to cut off to make it "even." The layering he cut was some of the worst I've seen. Rounded layers were extremely choppy and very uneven. Arthur's attempt to fix my cut failed for a second time as I left the salon with uneven hair again. Needless to say, I didn't trust Arthur further lightening my hair since he couldn't even do a simple trim on it. The first picture with dark hair is before Arthur. The second is Arthur's "fixed" cut. The third and the fourth photo are Arthur's initial cut he did showing the poor layering and unevenness. Hugely disappointed and I will not be returning. read more

When God made the Earth, he set aside some time to make the perfect hairstylist. He mixed one part Gay Artiste, one part Marine precision cutting, and one part crazy Mexican comedian! What did He get?? Lol, stylist fabuloso Kyle Aldridge at Select Salon! Select Salon is an odd house of independent hairstylists hidden in the trees and shrubbery of Cedar Springs at Hood St. In case you haven't seen it, it is indeed a house, literally. It has about 15-20 rooms and nooks where the stylists work. There's a sign out front to guide you there. Parking is behind the house (up a ramp) and on the street. Each of the stylists is independent. They manage their own clients, schedules and payments. They guide you back to their own room, navigating thru the maze of other stylists. From then on, you'll guide yourself back to where they work for future visits. Over the years, we've seen a plethora of hairstylists. Kyle recently went into business for himself in 2010, and moved into Select Salon on the 2nd floor. Doing so brought him to a whole new level!!! I'm currently getting my hair colored for Burning Man Festival as I wrote this. And I am just in awe of his knowledge, passion and commitment to detail. At this moment, my hair is turning into a turquoise and my husband's just bleached a stripe down his head. It looks GREAT!!! When you enter, you get coffee, tea, bottled water, soda, beer or wine. That kind of luxury is just a little thing that makes everything better. He is a HOOT! And laughing the whole time makes every cut and style SO MUCH FUN!!! I have been going to Select Salon since Kyle opened his business at this shop. I have been seeing Kyle for several years and never once I have ever received a bad color , cut or eyebrow wax. Recently I took my sons girlfriend to see him after she decided to cut her own hair with clippers. She came in looking a mess and Kyle was able to perform his magic which left her leaving with a super short but sassy and sexy hair cut. You would never know by looking at her hair after Kyle was done the her haircut choice was from necessity and not choice. The best part of having Kyle as your hairdresser is not that he is super talented or that he will make you feel and look like a million dollars but is the total treatment you get from him when you walk in the door until you leave. First he is never late for your appointment , he will always offer you a drink and make sure you are comfortable. Most important when you sit in that chair you are the center of his attention. Kyle's main focus is to make sure that I am happy and I look marvelous when I am done. Most of the time I let him make the decision on hair color and cut and he has never steered me wrong. I have been driving from mid-cities to Dallas for several years but I love the entire Kyle experience . Kyle makes me feel more like his friend than just a client. Select Salon is awesome, for the space alone. It is an old house, multi story, filled with kitschy, random, fantastic decor that's also, for the most part, for sale. At the rate of sounding like an info-mercial, the stylists and colorists match their surroundings to a t; if you're in the market for a funky, individual, but entirely classy 'do, they are your peeps. Specifically, I agree with Lindsay J., Glynnis Neal does top quality coloring; why she and her work aren't gracing the covers of local (national...) beauty and art publications is sort of beyond me. Christin Cobb has been cutting and coloring my hair for over 10 years! I would even fly back from college to get my hair done. Now that I'm in my thirties, she continues to impress! My natural hair color is strawberry blonde and Christin does a perfect super blonde highlight while still allowing my natural color to come through. It thinkens the appearance and texture of my hair, adds depth, and I love being super blonde for the summer. Also, the long layered cut grows out awesome. Not bragging, but I get compliments weekly - I carry around her cards with me. :) Plus all that, Christin is very attentive, she remembers everything, and is a total rock star! They turned out great! She also suggested I dye my eyelashes as they are long and full, just naturally blonde, so dying them is really all I needed to make them pop (no need for extensions)! I haven't had to wear mascara or eye brow pencil since (two weeks ago, should last 4 more weeks) - I'm a believer! I don't have to be worried about running eye make up at the pool, or looking weird when eye make up isn't an option, and it saves a ton of time both putting on and removing eye makeup. I wish yelp.com had an option for negative stars. I didn't even want to put one star. I feel I must write this review as a service to all women who care enough about their hair to cry over a bad cut. Some women, will deal with a bad cut and make the best of it, but I will not. It will haunt me for the next year of my life. I was recommended to Christin Cobb at Select Salon from a friend who had an adorable pixie cut. She told me to bring a picture and Christin could nail it. So I did just that. First, I should have visited www.christincobb.com and reviewed her style, because unless you are a White Stripes groupie, you may want to think twice about going to Christin. Second, I could understand why some may enjoy the decor at Select Salon because it has a very artsy and vintage charm, but I prefer a clean, modern salon. Let's get down to the meat of this. Christin shows up 20 minutes late for my appointment. Her assistant washes my hair in a small tiny corner and it isn't a great massaging wash...it's a "I should have washed my hair before I came" wash. I brought a picture...she looks at it, pretends she understands what I am talking about, then proceeds to do her thing, which includes cutting my bangs one inch short (which I told her I want to grow out), then she cut them way too wide...and they are taking forever to grow out. Then she has this "twisting" technique, which has ruined the way my hair lays. This was the worst hair cut I have ever received in my life and like a total sucka, I paid $75. $75 for a faux mullet and bad hair for the next year of my life. What a deal... I also wrote her an e-mail about my experience. I was constructive and specific about why I did not like my haircut. I never heard back from her. This proves to me that she does not care about her clients or their hair, or their happiness. To top it off, the girl who recommended me went back and she also got a terrible haircut! She was devastated and had to go to Toni & Guy to get it repaired. Again, Christin felt no inclination to fix it to her satisfaction. She told her "Sorry, I don't work on Sundays or Mondays. That's MY weekend." The best part is that she said "Tell your friend that I wasn't offended by her e-mail and to come back and see me." AS IF! We moved to Dallas recently and suddenly we need a haircut. From Yelp and FB, Select Salon has very good reviews, so we choose here, call number that appear on Yelp, and the guys said somebody else will call back after about 5 mins. But a different phone number called back, said from SelectSalon, my friend made appointment, and we went there this morning. First thing is the guy on phone tell us to go to the first room in grey building. It was really complicated way to get in a salon that I have ever been. But that room looks nice, comfy, have Norah Jones music from a Bose speaker. The stylish was nice and tried his best to do his job. But his hands was shaking a lot while he cut my hair. And he is not Kyle. We feel okay until we get home, take a shower and take a look at our hair. I want a short length layered hair, my friend wants a shoulder length layered hair. But turn out, our hair do not have any layer at all. And my hair doesn't even look the same from left and right side. It's not a good hair cut for sure. I dig on Yelp a little bit more and see another salon name Style By Cyn and Style By Kyle on Yelp at the same address. But ppl still talking about Kyle in Select Salon. So maybe they share an address; and any stylish can have a room at that location!? It's complicated and makes me confused now. So I'm not recommend anybody go there without knowing for sure the stylist you will see. read more

I have very light natural blonde hair -- used a Groupon for a cut and partial highlight -- ended up walking out of a well-known local salon with hair three shades darker. Devastated. Ruined natural blonde hair. Unbelievable. Called Cynthia, in tears, and she rushed into the salon to work her magic.... and magic it was. Left 2 hours later with my hair back and my sanity in check.
