I've shopped here before and people there seem to be the most knowledgeable of any nursery in the valley. Since today is a holiday, I didn't even know if they'd answer the phone, but they did and Dean patiently answered my questions about rose pruning and gave me so many amazing tips. I know that they're kind and knowledgeable in person, but I am blown away that they would be so kind and caring on a phone call! The level of professionalism, know-how and unparalleled customer service is such a rarity these days. It's like going back to an old-fashioned, small town country store -- but it's really an unusually courteous good group of people running an amazing nursery. I've been coming here for years. I don't know why I took a break I guess because it's not really geographically desirably. I finally made it back here and WHO CARES IF IT'S NOT AROUND THE CORNER?!? What was I thinking?!?!?!Drive if you have to, it's worth it!. 1st: the People.smart, sweet, knowledgeable and funny, yea, that's a bonus. 2nd: Inventory. I've never gone there said, "do you have_______" and had them say "No". They just have everything. 3rd: Variety. In tomatoes alone I could spend a week's paycheck, but you won't because their prices are so competitive. 4th: Healthy Plants. I went to a chain nursery last year to get some rose bushes and many of the plants had aphids. I mentioned that to the guy watering nearby. He said, "They got insecticides inside that will kill them". Dude, I'm not buying an aphid infested plant! Anyway, Sego Nursery's plants are pristine , most are already flowering and many of the tomato plants already had flowers and fruit on them. It's worth the drive! And if you can't find a space in their parking lot (it's a bit small) don't wimp out, go around the block, part on the street) it's worth it. read more

Not only does this nursery carry anything you might need at a reasonable price (from plants to pest control, to soil and fertilizers), but they also have a surprisingly niche selection. I can't think of anywhere else that carries calamondin (calamansi), shishito peppers, and epazote. Shopping here feels like shopping in my mom's garden, in the best way. I gotta tell you my wife and I found this nursery in 2024 and I'm so thankful we did, I've never been to a place where the owners are honest to a fault they tell you if you should grow it or not also not to mention all of them incredibly knowledgeable, we can tell they've been doing this for a long long time. I love this place and just wandered in after so many years. My huge plant had taken a tumble and needed to be re-planted so I went there for soil, advice, and spent an hour with the owner and realized how much I missed these privately owned companies. Home Depot has nothing on this place. I suggest we all start going back to the real-deal professionals. Dean, owner, very unassuming and very sharp sent multiple employees to find the right sized plastic pot I wanted. He was charming, gave me the cheat sheet on plant care, and I learned a ton. My grand total $10.98. Suggested small bag of soil, no need for big bag, a spade, and pot was free:) Plant-gate was done and I now have a nursery that I love. This is a place that has been around since 1947 and has a laid back attitude that is very zen and welcoming. Go there and check it out! I bought one of their plants that look OK. Turned out it was root bound and not taken care of and died 3 days later before I got it into the ground. I took it back to see if they had any kind of policy like Armstrongs and Home Depot about replacing plants that die prematurely. The owner laughed at me and said : if it is root bound it is healthy". SEGO SELLS DISEASED PLANTS! I bought a very expensive plant from Sego and when I got home I had a back seat full of ants! The plant also had some kind of spittle bugs on it and Laura, the heavy-set woman who works there, said that they would kill the plant. Dean Murakami, the older fat man, refused to replace the plant, instead he sold me two bottles of insecticide and I followed his orders precisely. The plant died within weeks. If you go to the back of the filthy store past the fertilizers, there is a dimly lit room full of sick plants. I also bought some tomato plants, soil, etc., and kept getting toadstools from the soil. I asked Dean about it and he told me to take photos, bring in the bag and one of the pots. I took them in and he blew up! Even saying that he didn't give a Gxxdamn among other profanities. He said that I was complaining and that they didn't want me to come back. Other customers were in the rundown store and they left because of his ravings. I told him that I didn't want anything and I wasn't arguing, I just wanted him to see that I was an honest person. He actually called the police on me. Read the reviews, these are terrible, unhappy people. Armstrong Garden Center is minutes away on Magnolia West of Coldwater. They stand behind their products and they are certainly nicer and cleaner people. read more

Was surprised to read the reviews about "disorganized" everything was as it is in order, if you understand plants/plant types, etc. Yes, there are many, very large "no dogs allowed" signs everywhere, if you must bring a dog, perhaps this is not the place for you. I have two large dogs, and do not take them to restaurants, Home Depot, the grocery store, nor the nursery (am probably old school). If you want a large selection of plants (for example a million type of Sage), with great customer service from people that have real knowledge this is the place for you. If you want "organization" and dog friendly, go to Home Depot, if you can find help at all chances are good you will get a blank stare, or perhaps someone who will try a Google search to answer your question. read more

I am saddened but not shocked to read some of the complaints regarding "condescending" attitudes, I get squat when I go to HD, so Sego is a nice change. I love speaking with Laura, she's by go-to when I need something and they will send help to look for items. I'm getting into eating seasonally & locally as much as possible as our wise ancestors had for millennia in order to obtain the freshest, most flavourful produce. One savory fruit that tastes so absolutely wonderful "home grown" and so tasteless when bought at a grocery store is the tomato. Sego (seh goh) Nursery during March, April, and even May has an extremely diverse array of tomato plants....More than I have seen in many other plant nurseries. Cool old school hand pulled wagons to load your treasure load of plants. I bought my favorite Sweet 100's cherry tomatoes which are prolific in number & don't ripen all at the same time (indeterminate) which is good since it eliminates waste. Also, they continue fruiting until the first frost or cold spell. Also, bought Sweet One Million and Chika Super Sweet Cherry Tomato developed in Japan. Can't wait to see what they taste like. Of course, Sego has fruit, berry, vegetables, ornamental trees, flowers, grasses, etc. to delight the eyes nose, & mouth. Also flower pots, fertilizers, soil amendments, garden ornaments & hand tools. Informative, helpful, friendly, off the cuff, jocular approach by some of the male staff members which I thought was entertaining in a slightly cheeky manner à la Saturday Night Live. Dan Aykroyd & John Belushi (RIP) would have a field day here. Sego has now become my "go to" spot in the San Fernando Valley when it comes to getting plants & garden supplies. Home Depot and Lowe's just can't compete when it comes to ultra specialty plants and knowledgeable service. PS No dogs. Leave diseased or vermin infested plants from home in the car to be examined & diagnosed by staff upon request. read more

I'm so disappointed with the customer service of this place. It's such a shame how the owners themselves send away a customer who walked in trying to support their business and shop from them. Before I even walked In, instead of saying hello, welcome - the lady ran out to tell me " you have to leave now. You cannot come here with a dog! " with the most unfriendly, rude attitude. So I show her an official certificate and documents for my service animal - she says ok fine, come in. I walk around, I choose a bunch of things to buy from them, someone else approaches me ( I believe a male owner this time ) again, with the most rudest attitude yelling at me " you cannot be here! You have to leave now!!!! " literally just so rude, and yelling I'm honestly shocked at how they keep this business going with this kind of " customer service ". I drove for almost an hour to come to this nursery, and at the end I just turned around and walked out myself because despite all my rights to be there I was DISGUSTED with their treatment and horrible service. I've been going to Sego on and off for years, it's an outdoor nursery on Burbank Blvd, near Laurel Canyon. I like that it's outdoor, especially nowadays, it's a tad wilder, not the best maintained one, but it's fun to browse and see what they have in store. If you love plants and you live in the area, this is a nice options, especially since it's an independent place. They have a variety of plants and fruit trees as well. I'm tempted to get a lemon tree for my patio. We shall see. Parking isn't ideal, but the place is charming and has character. Love me a space full of plants and greenery! read more

Not only are ALL the employees (every single one INCLUDING the owners) incredibly RUDE, the plants are mostly uncared for, dying and dead. The store is unkept, dirty and there is debris laying everywhere in the narrow walkways.( I almost tripped twice)! I asked 4 different people for help finding some specific plants (stevia, garlic and lemongrass) 2 completely ignored me one sent me on a wild goose hunt before turning to help someone else and the last one just said "were out". I have not been to this nursery in years!!! My wife came here with her Dad as a little girl. One friendly staff member said she has been there for 50 years!!! Helpful, best knowledge on plants etc. Got the non-machine garden tool I needed. Highly recommend...we need more stores like this. They are not computer savvy....call them or talk to them. We as a people are going through a very difficult time individually and collectively in the face of uncertainty. Many people I know have been laid off and are not just worried but scared of their future. You would think during this existential purgatory humans would show more empathy and kindness. As Dante's Inferno so eloquently put it..."Abandon hope all ye who enter here." I've been coming here for many years buying plants and young trees to plant, grow and derive pleasure from it. My last visit there was an unmitigated rudeness festival. Service was downright snotty with bad attitude reeking from the employees. When I sought to get a price on an item I was told one thing on the phone and a much higher price in person. There are several other nurseries that I will be more than willing to drive further to now and gladly give my business to. Being nice to customers shouldn't be a luxury, it should be standard operating procedure. I encourage all to avoid this place at all cost. I'll never step foot there again. Good riddance. read more

Now I understand the negative reviews. I called about a problem I am having with what I think are rats eating my geraniums and they told me to bring in a cutting and to take pictures. They DID NOT tell me to put the cutting in a bag (which I completely understand so that I don't bring "anything" in). I walk in and both the husband and wife literally started yelling at me to stop where I was and wouldn't stop yelling even after I asked them to. I was only walking up to the counter which is right when you walk in. I also said I'd go back to my car to get a bag and they said no, I didn't need to. Apparently there is something on the door also that says to put cuttings in a bag but there is so much junk on the door, I didn't even pay attention to that. If I'm honest, while they were yelling at me, I said "now I understand the bad reviews". So needless to say we did not get off to a good start. You couldn't pay me to go back there even if they were the best nursery on the planet. They are rudest people I have encountered in a very long time. read more
