If heaven had a gift shop, it would be this See's Candies. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with the intoxicating aroma of pure joy (and maybe a little sugar-induced euphoria). The staff? Immaculate vibes only. Friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly operating at a higher level of chocolate consciousness. One of them--Trinity, I believe--might actually be part wizard. I watched her help three customers, restock a display, and offer a perfectly timed sample like it was a choreographed Broadway number. I felt like I was witnessing chocolate ballet. Speaking of samples--yes, they give them out like tiny nuggets of edible happiness. I didn't know a piece of candy could emotionally move me, but here we are. The Scotchmallow nearly made me call my therapist to talk about how good life can be. Everything was pristine, perfectly stocked, and organized like candy had finally found its true purpose. I came in to "just browse" and left with a bag so full it now qualifies as a carry-on. Do yourself a favor: skip the sad gas station sweets and get your treat game upgraded here. Despite being gifted See's Candies regularly growing up, I had actually never been inside a store, and for my first time stepping into one, it was a great experience. Since I had been a recipient of these delicious chocolate boxes so much, I thought it was time for me to start carrying on the tradition. When I entered, there weren't any other customers inside and I was greeted right away by a super friendly cashier/clerk who asked me what I was looking for. Told her I was looking to gift a box of chocolates to someone, then she walked me through the various boxes, chocolates, peanut brittle and other items. Then she left me alone so I could look through the items and have time to think and decide. It's easy to look through the store as it's very clean and the items are all well-organized, I probably could have browsed the store for at least an hour lol, but gave myself a 20 minute time limit. I went with a gold medium-sized (?) box of chocolates and the cashier rang me up promptly. I wrapped it up at home and gifted it to my aunt a couple days later. She LOVED it! She feasted on the chocolates in front of me while sharing it with her kids. Mission accomplished. When needing a sweet gift to give someone, you can't go wrong with See's chocolates. read more

I went into Sees candies today to pick up a few pieces of candy on my cheat day. The store was not super crowded but there was only one worker. A young woman named Trinity helped me. She was very nice and had great customer service! Before I left, she let me know there would be a lot of new lollipop flavors in tomorrow and I should come back and check it out. If you are a POC- YOU ARE NOT SAFE HERE. My family and I have had See's candy at every family birthday, holiday, and celebratory gathering. On 10/27/2024 I came into your store at 5802 College Avenue in Oakland, CA to buy a gift for my sister at approximately 11am, and I had a horrific experience when I was verbally assaulted by a customer/patron. To put this experience in context, I am a first generation Californian, my parents immigrated to the United States from Fiji. and my siblings and I were born raised in the east bay. So in terms of my ethnicity, my experience would be categorized as "Asian Hate". As I was walking into the See candy's store, a man outside of the store aggressively yelled "NAMASTE" to me. I walked into the store and tried to ignore him and proceeded to go to the counter carrying a tote bag on that says "East Bay Local". While I was being helped by one of your employees, the same man came up to me and started to verbally harass me asking "why does your bag say east bay local" assuming that because of the way I look I couldn't possibly have been born and raised in the United States. I continued to try to ignore him, while the person behind the counter was hearing all of this, witnessing this man harassing me and scaring me and saying nothing to either me or him. He continued harassing me, asking if I was born in California and as it is becoming harder and harder to ignore him because he is shouting and won't leave me alone, I reluctantly answer him. "Yes, I was born in California". He then tells me to "go back where I came from". At this point I am feeling overwhelmed and scared but I get up the courage to ask him to stop talking to me. I then turn to the employee and express my concerns and they respond with" he was in a car accident and isn't mentally well". Following this hateful interaction, the man stayed in the store holding the door open for people leaving the store. Your employee compounded my feeling extremely unsafe in your store when they tried to justify this aggressive, hateful, racist behavior and did absolutely nothing to deescalate the situation. Why was this man, who your employee implied had serious mental health problems that she was already aware of, allowed to stay in the store after harassing a customer? I am extremely disappointed that this employee did nothing to make me feel safer in this situation where I was clearly being harassed and a victim of hateful speech. From the other reviews I've read, this doesn't seem out of the ordinary. I would encourage you to go to another chocolate store. read more

Hours are better than other nearby stores, parking is tough to find but help inside was great and so are the candies. Hours are much more generous than other nearby stores. I don't want to quote them as sometimes things change - but this place as I write this is open at least a couple hours longer then neighboring stores. Parking is limited to street parking only.... and in a popular neighborhood like this one you might need a little luck. I was able to park in front of Zacharies and was lucky... (a good place to try out btw). Help inside was great. Very fast and speedy. A sample of my choice which I've never been asked before. Wrapped lightening fast for a gift. Candies are great. I remember when these were less expensive but everything has doubled in price the past 5 - 10 years. Still a steal compared to Godiva - I think its still half price - and I enjoy the candy more. Only one type of candy I asked for was sold out - but I was recommended a type that was very similar in flavor. The help here really was expert. One recommendation I have for the store to increase sales would be a glow in the dark open sign. I think this is really an important investment. If the store has no people inside it can look closed even during open hours. It gets dark so early these days and I'm sure many walk right past assuming the store is closed. read more

Many, many thanks to the precious saints working at this location anytime near Valentine's Day. Hubby and I came the night before Valentine's Day for a casual box of chocolates we could share with each other. There were three people/households ahead of us in line about 1.5 hours prior to closing, no big deal... except it took maybe 10 minutes for anyone to leave the store, and in that time the line behind us grew by about 10 households, stretching down the block. Yikes, but also not a surprise. We made it in by 15-20 minutes and found that there were only TWO people managing the VDay chaos. I really admire the way they can patiently wait for people to deliberate over whether they'd rather have the blueberry or apple pie truffle... I am definitely one of these annoying people, but they lovingly wrapped up my pound of chocolates regardless. Also, how much patience does it take to not judge people buying literal pounds of chocolates? My favorite flavors were: - blueberry - cherry - pineapple - raspberry - pretty much anything fruity. Great customer service in a stressful situation, delicious chocolate, and no judgment. I love See's Candies. I hope they never leave. read more

I've seen the other reviews saying the woman working here is rude. It's not that she's rude, she just seems a bit introverted and doesn't express much. She did help us well and even reminded us of a certain other candy that one of the See's candies reminded us of (Almond Rocha) when she overheard us wondering about it. read more

My last experience was a bit off-putting. I was being helped by a grumpy guy. How can you be grumpy around that much chocolate?! I can tell he couldn't wait to be off work which was fine bc retail is not the best place to work esp during a pandemic but I felt I was def in need of better service that day. But today, I felt like the workers were really friendly and attentive. Plus no grumpy guy! I was quickly in and out. I picked up two pieces: my favorite orange cream and a dark chocolate truffle. I've never been to a See's Candies that I didn't like. Even the ones shoved into corners of malls evoke this fond, familiar feeling in the cockles of my arteries. While my common sense sees through their corporate strategy of maintaining this image of an old-timey, neighborhood candy shop to keep you coming back for more nostalgia-induced serotonin, the recesses of my brain has a chocolate goblin that absolutely refuses to pass a See's Candies without buying anything. I'm not from that era, but I can step onto any of those black-and-white checkered floors and be teleported into my childhood in an instant. Why must I fall prey to the wiles of marketing psychology This Oakland shop, like every other, is great. See's (what's the plural? Seeses? Sees'? Sees'es?) always seem to be staffed with chatty, motherly grandmas-- I mean this in the best way possible. They're also expert salespeople and I hate/love it. I've received all too many free samples from See's grandmas in my lifetime to refuse buying a truffle or five. read more

Ordinarily I would give a 5 star review but there was a male working there today (July 14, 2024) who does not understand Sees business model. I always, every visit, order a half pound to a pound of chocolate. The male cashier was rude and short tempered and was withholding on samples. Sees candies is always amazing, I've always had amazing customer service no matter which establishment I visited. Unfortunately, when I came to this Sees Candies, I was treated as if the only goal was to get me out of the store. I was assisted by Laura B. and each time she asked a question and I wasn't sure of how to answer, she was visibly annoyed and irritated by me simply asking her to repeat the question. All of her responses were short and condescending. Came into this location to kill some time and I wanted some chocolate. We were greeted immediately by Jeannie P. She offered samples of the chocolate with sea salt. I politely declined and looked at the many chocolates that they had. I ended up getting the dark chocolate buttercream. I must say, the dark chocolate was delicious despite not liking dark chocolate. But I most say congrats to the young man, possibly the supervisor or manager on duty for remaining calm when a customer came in being extremely rude to him and for trying to cause a scene. OMGGGG...this place!! It's like something out of an old TV show like Leave it to Beaver or Father Knows Best (he really DOESN'T- it was always Mom who did). Actually there is an old episode of I Love Lucy that features the original See's chocolate plant that I've always loved! Who doesn't love See's candy? This review is not for their product, which I have always found to be consistently delicious, but for the shockingly poor customer service I witnessed yesterday. I went in on Sunday evening around 5:00PM a week and a half before Christmas, and naturally there were a number of customers in the store. Most retail establishments have scheduled their seasonal rush staffing so they have enough coverage to have someone at the register for customers who simply want to pay for pre-packaged products. Not the case here, however. Instead, there is apparently one line for all customers, which includes those who are picking out individual types of candy along with those who simply want to pay. This is confusing for people who are not familiar with the way they do their business, as it isn't clear that there is a line, so customers stand by the register thinking they can give the store their money without waiting in line along with the half dozen people with individual orders. There were three people (not all in one group) standing by the register who had waited quite a while, and when they asked one of the staff if they could pay, they were rather rudely told that they needed to go stand in line. One of the three said, we didn't know there was a line. I heard them talking amongst themselves with puzzlement for a moment, and then they all three left the store without purchasing anything. When I got up to the young man who spoke to them, I said, it would be helpful if you had a sign that explained that there is a line, so people know that they have to go wait. He said, it's common sense! And gestured to the back of the store, where there were people still waiting. I said, it may be common sense to you, but to somebody who doesn't come in here often, it's not really clear. He continued to argue. Not wanting to hold the line up anymore than it already was, I paid and left. This employee lost the store I would guess at least $100 because of his insistence on an unclear policy, and was rude about it as well. While it is an employee's responsibility to provide good customer service, it is management's responsibility to provide customer service training. I see that this review is not the only one with comments about their poor customer service, so clearly it is time for the store management to re-examine how they train staff to treat their customers. Or maybe, like the young man who waited on me and was rude to the other customers, they don't really want our money? read more

This is for customer service only. I still like their chocolate. I waited 15 minutes today with my infant daughter (with two customers in front of me) for a transaction that took us less than a minute. It did not occur to the woman behind the counter to say, "Thanks for waiting!" or "Sorry to have kept you waiting."...or even acknowledging our existence at any point until we got to the register, which for a company that's pretty service-oriented seemed pretty poor to me. I have no problem complying with social distancing, but today I had an outright rude and bizarre experience. My partner and I were walking down college when I saw sees and decided to grab a chocolate bar. When we got closer there were barricades and the door said 8 people at a time. There was one person. I peeked in because I wasn't sure why there were barricades. At this point the one other customer finished and was let out by the cashier. However upon coming out she had a terrible attitude. She told me to back up. Then told me to line up. She sarcastically pointed out that I was standing in front of the door. It was just odd. She let us in and I walked right out. She mentioned something about "sanctions" and I just found the whole experience off putting and awful. I have never in my life had a bad experience at a sees until today. read more

Was in there this morning, day before Easter. It was rather crowded and some older individuals were taking their times making up their minds as to which candy pieces to purchase (and one cash register was not working). The employees at this Sees in Rockridge on College Ave were so KIND and so PATIENT I wanted to write this most positive Yelp review ---- especially worthy of mentioning was one young woman named (I thinks) Lilla and a second woman named Laura. However, all the employees working behind the counter seemed nice, kind and patient --- happened to witness Lilla and Laura interacting with people in such a nice way. So it's Valentines Day.. I admit that I tend to be a last-minute shopper. I checked the store hours for this particular location the morning of and saw that they opened at 9 am. In order to beat the inevitable rush I decided to get here at 8:30 am only to see the sign saying that store hours are "10 am-7pm".Whaaa?..So I called the store phone number and luckily got an answer.The employee explains to me that she was unaware of the 9 am opening and was informed via company email that the store was to open at 9:30 am. I said," I'll wait till then, no rush!" Yet she willingly opened at 9. Ok great! Thanks! Like "clockwork " ppl started streaming in the second that she opened up! The employee was obviously frustrated about the opening hour discrepancy but in her defense she obliged. My only problem is that although she tried to have the friendliness and courtesy required for her position she clearly was irritated by the fact that she opened the store earlier than expected and she was unexpectedly by herself. I've been there girl and all I can say is "It is what it is!" When I told her that I'm ordering a custom box in addition to the pre-made box that I set on the counter she groaned ! Why?!? I even allowed other customers who had small orders go ahead of me out of empathy that she was by herself! She also made comments such as "It wasn't busy on Saturday or Sunday!Everybody comes on Valentines Day! The days to get the candy is BEFORE Valentines Day!"....Uhh...ok.. so maybe I was under the impression that the candy will taste better if I buy it today? I'm not a chocolate connoisseur but she let me know that it didn't make much difference. Anyway as long as the recipients are happy I'm happy.But See's Corporate needs to be more proactive with their employees especially on one of their busiest-and profitable-days of the year! read more

So few reviews for a place in Rockridge?! I realize it's a chain, but... this is an excellent location! Some See's are a bit stuffy, full of grannies buying chocolates for their church meeting. This location is super sleek, modern, and clean. The staff are SO, soooo nice, often offering multiple free samples. Is it the best chocolate in the East Bay? The 2 stars is for the chocolate. 0 stars for how this store is poorly run. First off, I tried to go there yesterday at 4:10pm and there's a sign saying they're closed until 5:03pm. Extremely odd to close this place at that time. I tried again today and they were surprisingly open but once I walked in, I was bombarded by 2 unhealthy looking ladies who treated me like a panhandler and said I couldn't be in the store with my dauschund. I replied that a simple hello and being more cordial about store policies is a better approach and that I will never go back because of their rudeness. I've been a faithful See's Candies customer since I don't know when. It's good. Each Xmas, I buy a box for my loved ones who celebrate that holiday/have a sweet tooth. My family all has favorite candies at See's. The reason that I'm reviewing the store this year is that I received some of the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Most of the salespeople were being kind and pleasant but I landed with one who tried to pack every box with twice the amount of candy that I ordered. She then became sullen and belligerent, slowing down her work so that I was holding up a now long line. The woman laughed with a coworker and pointed at me. When I tried, to make peace after she rang me up, following the whole ordeal, she refused to speak. I am saddened when I don't feel supportive of older women workers. We need to be able to make the argument that we can do the work, given reasonable accomodation. Frankly, I believe that if you're kind to everyone, the public will forgive you for your limitations. My client and I endured the most off-putting customer 'non-service' experience we've had this year at See's Rockridge! It seemed a combination of racial-profiling racism and ageism. As we were the only customers in the store, one might've expected outstanding customer service? Instead, after drawing the 2 devoid-of-emotion, female salespersons attention to our presence in the otherwise empty store, they demonstrated little interest in our questions. Even after stating It was challenging to read the product menu b'cuz I'd left my glasses in the car, the short, bespectacled statue stared at me as if to say "that sounds like a YOU problem!" Again, no other customers in the store. If not for the fact I was buying a specifically-requested Christmas gift for an out-of-town friend, we would've walked out the moment this rude, dismissive behavior began!! After calling earlier in the week and speaking with a gentleman who couldn't have been more pleasant, it was absolutely shocking to be confronted with such adversarial attitudes! If I have, or want to visit a See's store in the future, it will definitely NOT be this location, nor would I recommend it. read more
