Everything was fine until checkout with Laura. My last name is Latin, I'm a Latin man. I came in, found what I was looking for and went to pay for my things. Upon paying I was asked if I wanted to sign up for some rewards program, I said sure. Upon telling her my full name, she kept mispronunciation my last name even after I corrected her. Laura is also a latin woman which is why I was taken aback at the fact that I kept reminding her that a J is pronounced like an H. The interaction felt dismissive and unnecessarily uncomfortable, almost like telling someone "yes the sky is blue, and them saying " got it, so red, right?" I used to love Paper Source because they had an endless supply of paper. This seemed ok, but it seems smaller and is owned by Barnes and Noble. Unfortunately, they didn't do for Paper Source what they did for magazines and the selection is lacking. In addition to that, there was a guy with a grey mullet-like hairdo who totally ignored us. He helped the person in front of us. And then seemed to be so interested in something on the cash register that he just plain ignored us. Someone came over from the back to help us with the purchase. I am fairly certain I have been to another Paper Source in Walnut Creek and that being said, I doubt I liked it any more now than I did then. Paper Source is the type of place you go to to buy throwaway gifts for people you don't know well. Think joke dolls, make your own garden boxes, and bracelet kits. There was a ton of cutesy wrapping paper - but I don't use wrapping paper (I wrap with fabric that can be re-used) and I don't tend to think of places such as this when deciding what to give to someone. While the service was friendly, I felt bad for the three associates who genuinely seemed incredibly bored wandering around trying to find things to do in an otherwise very organized store. Note to all that are looking to make wedding invites: Make an appointment! *** I was completely unaware of this tradition for making wedding invites that I thought I could walk in and figure everything out within an thirty minutes (that's how long parking is permitted in the parking lot... but you don't have to worry about that). If you have the patience to make your own wedding invitations they have beautiful Japanese paper to work with, but the whole thing will cost about the same as buying your invites online - though these will look slightly better. They have all sorts of great DIY kits for making paper flowers, and crafty necessities like symbol punch outs and ribbons. They have super cute Chinese take out boxes for wedding favors, too. Boy was I surprised! First off, the store is every crafty girl's Barbie playhouse. Paper in every color and texture imaginable, ribbons, markers -- it went on an on. They even have a corner dedicated to craft lessons. I found my blank cards and learned about embossing and added a new gizmo to my arsenal. Service was swift, friendly and more collaborative than sales-oriented. What resulted were beautiful cards that guests were shocked to learn were homemade. Beautiful cards and gift ideas. We got many of our Christmas presents from here this year. Were we lazy? Yes, maybe a little bit. Still, it was fun finding little knickknacks for people. You have to be a little wise about their pricing though. They seem to add a bit of "boutique" pricing to their items. For example, a set of 9 whiskey stones (which are a waste of money--get large ice cube molds instead) are $24.95 at Paper Source and $19.95 at Sur La Table which is just down the street. Good finds, just know you probably aren't getting the best deal. But you're probably getting some fun things that are unique and creative. read more

The staff here is super sweet. I needed wedding invitations (which I ultimately screwed up but that has nothing to do with my experience here). The ladies walked me through the invitation books to match my theme and colors. You can order in-store or online. Alas and alack, the ones I loved were out of budget but did that deter the staff? Did that inspire them to invite me to the egress? NO! These ladies showed me what I could do within my budget. I learned how to do envelope liners, distress paper and properly use stamps. My new amazing discovery that I didn't think I can do, embossing! It's so neato. The staff here is fantastic. They come around to make sure you have everything you need and even do brief consultations to cater to the kind of project you're working on. They offer classes which is super helpful and I wish I knew about it before I got started. So take advantage of those workshops, folks! Especially all you Brides to Be. Yes, it is a bit expensive. Came here in early evening in need of a gift. Hours on the sign on the door read 7pm but the door was locked. I stood there for a moment, confused, and both employees saw me, looked at me from across the room and then tried to pretend I wasn't there. They then walked to the door but refused to look at me. "We forgot to change the sign" one said, exasperated, as though I did something wrong. Frustrating experience. I've had pleasant experiences before so this was especially disappointing. Reason for visit: It's Paper Source, why not visit? Visit date: November 28, 2011 First time? No ways. I love this store for it's numerous craft ideas and helpful workers. Today, I was looking for Japanese Washi paper and whoa, I couldn't decide on which patterns I wanted to buy. They have a great selection. There is also a fun gift section with aprons, books, calendars, and lots more. If you have craft questions, the staff is very knowledgeable. The last time I was here, I wanted to get a demo of the letterpress machine and they jumped at the chance to show me. I was expecting more patterned paper similar to what you would find at a scrapbook store but was pleased to find all sizes and colors of blank cardstock and envelopes for making/printing your own invitations/cards/etc. I spent a lot of time looking at every part of the store, which does have more than just paper- including stamps, a small but unique selection with memorable stamps like the donkey and elephant political party symbols, vote, and sayings like "your husband is good in bed", which I couldnt think of a need for in stamp form. But maybe some people can. The other large section of the store is dedicated to books on crafting etc, novelty toys, printed papers in large scroll form- Japanese prints, hand made papers etc and a lot of albums and scrapbooks, and cards. I felt inspired by the cards and examples around the store, inspired enough that I bought 3 types of blank cardstock to make my own postcards and invitations. read more

After our weekly throwdown at Vik's, I asked Dr. R. if he wouldn't mind taking a nap in the car while I checked out this store. Unfortunately, this store combines a few of my MAJOR obsessions into one-stop shopping. I was highly stimulated. ...and of course, they are not cheap! First: desktop gadgetry, such as pencil sharpeners shaped like cats, funny file folders and my purchase award in this category: stickable paper that has chalkboard surface on one side (20 bucks but I HAD to have it). Second: blank books and photo album galore. My personal journal has just a few more pages and I have spent the month of December looking at and rejecting replacement journals because I am basically picky, picky, picky. They have to be lined, they have to be a certain size (not too big, not too small...). I finally (yeah!) found a replacement here at Paper Source. Third: paper goods. A2 envelopes of many colors. Wrapping paper to die for. Scrapbooking pages, specialty pages, color, not color. I ended up with some red print paper, gold shimmer envelopes, off-white ecru flat cards... Fourth: Rubber stamps (omg!). Well, you know me and rubber stamps. I have a few... and I love them. I found myself buying two more... but honestly, if they were a smidge cheaper, I would have bought more. They have a nice selection of stamp pads, chalks, and all that other stuff. Fifth: Stuffed animals. Yep. They had the most perfect panda there... I may have to go back and buy him. Sixth: tons and tons of really cute items. I was really taken by their valentines. Pricey, but way cute. I didn't buy any valentines, because I was shopping to make my thank you notes from all the Christmas presents I so thankfully received. One caveat: This is one pricey store. But Vera pretty much fucking sucks when it comes to thank you cards and remembering birthdays. I have yet to receive one. I even gave 'Vera' personalized thank you cards one year. Though I have more things than I'll ever know what to do with (I can probably make everyone on Yelp a birthday card and still have enough stuff left over to hook up the folks on Craigslist), I can't keep myself away from Paper Source's new Berkeley store (opened up in the old Discovery Store location). They've got anything you'd possibly need to put together a home-made card -- regular paper, regular envelopes, vellum paper, vellum envelopes, embossed paper, embossed envelopes, embossing powder, embossing gun, rubber stamps, stamp pads, pads of patterned paper, scissors, scissors that cut cool patterns, paper punchers, paper trimmers, pens... Was it just me or did you also get a tingly feeling in your nether region reading that? Anyhow, you don't need to be a Martha Stewart wanna-be to shop at Paper Source. For the lazy/uncreative/procrastinating folks, they've also got a great assortment of ready-to-go cards, albums, books, gifts too. But for the rest of you, it's okay, release your whore. You'll be glad you did. I'll upgrade them to 5 stars once they start offering classes like their sisters in the city. I really wanted to have copper foil printed invitations (even more awesome than gold foil and letterpress), but after getting slapped by a $7 per-invitation quote at an invitation vendor, I decided I needed to get creative and imitate copper foil for a buck or less a pop. And I wanted tea-length because postage is the same as a standard letter size envelope instead of the more expensive greeting card-size postage rates. So after designing and planning with my awesome graphic designer friend, I went to Paper Source to find some suitably beautiful shimmery copper cardstock that I would printed the design OVER, so the lettering would show through as copper. Yes, genius, I know ;) I found Stardream shimmer cardstock, coordinating envelopes, postcards, letter-weight paper, and many other paper products in various forms at Paper Source. They had tea length envelopes - two kinds, one with awesome old-school inter-office style button and string closure, and then the standard sealable flap. I opted for the standard flap because a) it was cheaper, and b) the staff told me the button/string closure type are not able to process through the post office's equipment without getting ripped, so I would either need to tape it down (pointless because it ruins the design), or put it inside another envelope (which is just a waste). They don't have tea length paper, but I bought the letter sized cardstock and cut it in thirds - fits perfectly, and saves a lot of moolah. I got postcard sized cardstock for reply cards - postcards are cheaper postage than little reply cards too. Now the hard part - figuring out how to print on this pretty but finnicky paper. It's coppery because it has a plasticized coating, which makes it difficult to print on. You need to use a color laserjet printer to accomplish this (no inkjet and no color copier, I tried both), and try to adjust the ink color based on the the paper color, because the ink will behave semi-transparently, so copper paper made my ink color look warmer than I liked, so after adjusting the design to be more blue, everything came out perfectly. I used the same copper paper for table numbers, placecards, reserved chair labels, and favor labels. I loved my invitations and everything that coordinated with them, and saved a ton of cash. Note to fellow diy brides: make sure you write something to the effect of "Please RSVP by ..." otherwise people are amazingly flaky and you will need to make way too many phone calls chasing people for rsvps. I learned this the hard way! And triple check that everything is correct before printing, else you have re-purchase all your paper over again. Yes this happens and it's so stupid but it really does happen, the details are so easily overlooked when you have a million other things to do. read more

I AM A DEVOTEE OF PAPER. Good, crisp, fresh paper. Ah! NOTHING quite like it. This place, is thus, my temple. I must've spent 2.5 hours on Saturday afternoon just browsing all the cards, shamelessly stroking the reams of paper, price checking and rationalizing my purchases as I made decisions to whom they were going to be gifted. I have absolutely no regrets. Not one, no siree. The staff is extremely helpful, to the point that they come around and complement you on your valorous decision making. I thought that was a bit odd but then, strangely, they approached me, and I felt validated in my decision and compelled to spend more. So good on you staff! The selection is quite nice. Some of the cards though, especially the ones made from the Paper Source paper are such an easy DIY project if you buy 2 pieces of their paper. I just couldn't justify it to myself at all, so as adorable as they were, I didn't. Instead, I splurged on the cute hand press cards, the bargain pile from Valentine's day for next Valentine's. I also bought a cute mug, very nice thank you cards and a variety pack that would set me off about $1.40 a card (good, solid paper) yes, I did my homework. So yep. Just what I am looking for for DIY wedding invitations!!! Not only do they have beautiful paper, prints and patterns. They also have every color in the rainbow when it comes to enclosures/pocketfolds, envelopes and flatcards. They have a selection of stamps, ink and other DIY machines. Ravina was also super helpful and friendly. She showed me all those cool paper tricks and was very supportive of me entering the card making craft. Total doll! I admit I have a bizarre fixation with card and paper shops, and I can see from the other reviews here that I'm not alone. :) This place feeds my desire in more ways than one. I first discovered it online while researching wedding invitations, and I could not have been happier with the pink and orange swirly letterpress invites I ordered (maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I wanted to stay away from the standard tasteful white; they have other color combos and designs too). The invites were awesome, the product and service was great, and I ended up finding many other things in the store for my wedding. I really like paper source in sf and their online webstore.... however, I found the staff at the berkeley location very unpleasant. When I wanted to ask about supplies I was looking for, they spoke to me in a very demeaning way. I felt like they wanted to give me safety scissors because I was obviously too retarded to cut paper as gloriously as they do. I'm not a stranger to art supplies having graduated in illustration and animation - so I felt really put off that they would treat their customers like they were inferior.
