I really like paper source in sf and their online webstore.... however, I found the staff at the berkeley location very unpleasant. When I wanted to ask about supplies I was looking for, they spoke to me in a very demeaning way. I felt like they wanted to give me safety scissors because I was obviously too retarded to cut paper as gloriously as they do. I'm not a stranger to art supplies having graduated in illustration and animation - so I felt really put off that they would treat their customers like they were inferior. That being said - paper source has good stuff for all your crafting needs. Just avoid the staff. read more

Paper Source is a craft person's heaven. There are so many cool things in this store, from little note cards to stamps to card stock in every color of the rainbow. As one who used to make homemade cards, I could easily spend hours in this store. I loved looking at all the cute cards and seeing all the nifty little things they had. I have to agree that prices are a little high, but the selection of goods that they carry is quality. Whether you're just looking for a card or your next DIY project, Paper Source is the way to go. So I've been here. A LOT. I just got married and my husband I took the "creative", "budget friendly" route, thus, why we were at Paper Source A LOT. The young lady who has the long straight blond hair was VERY, VERY patient and helpful during the year that my now-husband and I were designing our Save the Dates (multiple visits to check out stamps and ink colors) and the invitations (pocket folder or folded card?). She even patiently waited during some, what's the correct word, "passionate" conversations between my husband and I after we spent too much time together. But thanks to Paper Source,we saved a ton of money on our wedding stuff. They are very well stocked, and offered to order whatever they could. They also provided some really useful stores that we used for buying personalized stamps (Berkeley Stamp Co) and a wider selection of stamps (The Scrapebook Territory). I've been to a few different Paper Source location and this one tops them all. The staff is amazingly helpful which is exactly what I needed. I came here just the other day to find pretty paper, envelopes, and adornments for my save-the-dates. I brought along my graphic designer friend and together we scoured the shop to find something that was special and just right. There was so much to look at that I was easily distracted, but two of their sales people came over and took charge. They walked us around and asked all the right questions and showed us things we would not have considered on our own, but with a keen eye for all things paper and crafty, they were able to quickly put together a combination of products that were absolutely what I wanted. I am so grateful for their help. $62 later we were out of there and the save-the-date crafting session began. They turned out beautifully. I'm ecstatic! I have never wanted to give more stars to a yelp review than I do right now. I came to Paper Source as I began my quest for finding my wedding invitations, and it was the ONLY place I looked at my wedding invitations because I found them there. Not only did I find them, but I got EVERYTHING to make them myself!! I had entirely ruled this out, being the not-crafty-or-artsy person that I am. However, Zoe spent almost 3 hours with my partner and I on our first visit. She walked us through every.single.detail. And my confidence as a DIY bride suddenly skyrocketed. The paper quality is AMAZING, and my invitations look spectacular. I made my fiance drive an hour in the rain from Davis just to go to Paper Source! I was visiting him from Arizona and there are no Paper Source stores there! =( I have been constantly on their website collecting ideas in preparation for DIY invitations for our wedding. I had my ideas laid out, but I just needed to see the papers up close and personal and get some QA/QC from the staff before I ordered my paper in bulk. As soon as we got into the store, I fell in love! Tons of paper and tons of ideas. The store was well laid out and items were easy to find. Someone promptly came to help us and showed us all the papers I needed to put my invitations together. They even provided several demos of techniques for me that I will now be incorporating into my invitations. I'm glad I stopped in! I picked up a few samples and will be doing a test run before ordering in bulk! It is truly wedding-prep heaven; however, this store may be an addiction long after the wedding. =) read more

I'm not a crafts-type person for the most part, but this place has some pretty interesting things to add a more custom touch to homemade cards or crafts otherwise. Lots of loose sheet designed paper that you can't find at ordinary supplies store, though the prices for these were hiding somewhere - I guess I'll figure it out if I ever need something. Lots of colored paper and envelopes to choose from, which I could use from time to time - especially the vellum designs. Definitely something to look to if looking for wedding/celebratory invitations/thankyous for the artsy people who prefer to see the materials in hand rather than on a screen. Of the prices I could find, they seem to be fairly reasonable for the specialty nature of the crafts. read more

I only truly discovered Paper Source while planning my wedding. After looking at several chain and mom-and-pop wedding invitation suppliers, we settled on Paper Source because of a particular design we liked, their reasonable price for letterpress, and the other paper goods available (i.e., they sold a stamp of the design of our wedding stationary that we could use for other wedding items). First, we ordered our Save the Dates in post card form. They came out beautifully! We bought matching labels to print addresses onto -- a word of caution, they are not made for laser printers. Next, we ordered our Invitations and RSVP post cards. The people at Paper Source helped us custom order a letterpress design in a color scheme that they only do for flat printing. We also ordered our return stickers from Paper Source, which weren't quite as life-altering, but they matched so that was nice. The invitations and RSVP post cards also came out beautifully! We went to Paper Source SO many times before the wedding....for paper for invitation inserts, labels, place cards, table cards, envelope liners, thank you cards....I am sure there is more I'm forgetting. The people there also showed me how to use the matching rubber stamp to make envelope liners with watermarks and embossed flowers on the place cards. Everything was so beautiful and I am embarrassed to say that the staff there is probably sick of seeing us....too bad for them, I love all the non-wedding stuff there too! Everyone we've interacted with was not only friendly and enthusiastic to help us, but I get the sense that they really enjoy playing with paper and want to share it with everyone else! read more

I went here for the wedding invitation workshop and it was not only informative and very affordable, but so much fun! I am a deep lover of paper and creative techniques (think: embossing) so it was great learning more about how I can make amazing cards (really whatever you learn here can be applied to anything and everything: birthday cards, gift tags, an anniversary card for your honey, coworkers last day). Workshop aside, Paper Source is amazing for cute gifts, calendars, hilarious greeting cards, rubber stamps, aprons, photo albums and gorgeous amazing single sheets of handmade wrapping paper. Cuteness overload. There are so many adorable trinkets, books, gifts and of course beautiful papers. I found a beautiful paper that was a map of Paris. I bought it with the intention of framing it - an incredible deal at $3.95. (n.b. The Ikea "Virserum" frame is the *exact size* of this paper. I'm not sure if they're all the same size but you can create some substantial and beautiful wall art for about $25.) A great store with very friendly staff. Highly recommended! read more

I never thought I would be this excited about paper. I mean, I was practically gushing out loud about how cool paper is when I first walked in this store. All the texture, the print, the colors.... the creative juices were definitely flowing, and I am not even creative to begin with. Yes, I can confidently say that this store can bring out the inner-Martha Stewart in all of us. My boyfriend used Paper Source to make my sister's wedding invitations with. My sister, who was a bit of a picky, control-freak, flesh-eating bridezilla at the time, was quite pleased with her invitations. I came back a second time, this time, for one of my best friend's wedding. The gentleman who sat with us to discuss EVERYTHING was enormously helpful. He was very patient as he went through everything in detail. He provided us with plenty of options and showed us ways to snip some of the expenses. I loved this store as soon as I walked in! I'm a huge fan of scrapbooking and cardmaking, and this score has such a huge variety of paper products! The only downside is that they're pretty pricy, which is to be expected, of course. In one corner, they have an assortment of different sized cards, envelopes, and enclosures in a rainbow of different colors, so you can find just the right style and color for invitations/cards. They also have rolls of patterned paper in all sorts of styles and colors, perfect for customizing your invitations/cards. Recently I was commanded by a co-worker to put together something cute and craftsy for a going away tea party for one of our colleagues. While I was not completely certain what she was talking about (which is often the case with her), I think she meant like a table top card type thing. But, here's the thing: I'm not particularly craftsy. I mean, I enjoy looking at well done paper crafts and such, but I have no idea what I'm doing. Enter Yvette at Paper Source. I describe my dilemma and she spent a good 15 minutes with me giving me suggestions and hooking me up with some really fun gear and all the basics to get me started. And best of all, her enthusiasm was really contagious and now rather than dreading a "stupid crafts project" I'm totally jazzed to get started. I really love this PaperSource! As a girl who used to buy 20 billion journals as a kid and then not write in them because they were "too pretty" I think I know my way around a good paper store. This place is more than a paper store. They have all kinds of unique, quirky, charming gifts that I want to buy...FOR MYSELF and a million envelopes that I want to staple gun all over the walls of my bedroom. I absolutely love the colors of their new line and probably make a little pilgrimage to the shop once a week to pay my respects to the paper gods. I suggest you do the same. The employees in this particular PaperSource are also top notch. They know their products and are always incredibly cheerful and friendly. But not in that overly happy way when you know people are being big fakers so they can talk you into buying something. The PaperSource staff seems completely genuine and just in love with their jobs. And why wouldn't they be happy to work in the paper-lovers Disneyland? Really can't say enough good things about them. The only reason I didn't give them the full five stars is because they don't stock quite as many envelopes as their SF store and don;t get refills as often which drives me a lil nuts. When I was planning my wedding I used to drive aaaaaaalllllll the way from Albany to the Chestnut St location of Paper Source. I was elated when they opened the Berkeley store! The spot used to be a lame-o Discovery Store---Paper Source is a major improvement to the 4th St. area. Despite having lots of cool cards and paper stuffs there, I still wish they had MORE! I love making y own invitations. Although I love the idea of being crafty, I have terrible fine motor skills! The reason I keep coming back here is that I come in with a small idea and the staff here always work hard to make it into something big, and yet still within my uncrafty reach! When I went in last weekend to find materials to make Baby Shower invites, I received quick, easy tutorials on how to emboss, line envelopes with fun paper, and play with new paper color combos! Paper Source feeds my arts and crafts ADD. They have a wonderful selection of decorative paper, rubber stamps, cards, envelopes and other arts and crafts supplies. I love the wide range of rich, vibrant colors. Rubber stamps are priced well (especially compared to stamp shops I've been to) and the staff is uber helpful. This is really more of a 3.5 kind of review here. I found the staff cheerful and DEVOTED crafters. So devoted that they end up being rather pushy actually, following you through the entire store contradicting your crafting prowess and commenting on everything you pick up. I love an educated employee, and I love even more when they are passionate enough about their work to share ideas-what I do not love is when they are bossy. If I want to purchase that embossing powder, heater and 15 fancy stamps I will. I appreciate the time you spent showing me how to do it in 12 different designs in all amazing hues that span the spectrum-but I actually didn't even ask you about embossing. I asked you what kind of ink to use on this stamp here, not that I don't appreciate a tangent (cuz I'm the Queen of Tangentland). And I really don't expect my printer (Elite Copy in Berkeley) to emboss these all for me for free-this is kind of a rush order anyway. When you try to explain to these craft mavens that your project is not quite so fabulous or intricate they seem deflated and lose a bit of interest in your pedestrian craft tinkering...you can tell they save their real love for fellow Craft Obsessed Addicts. They have an amazing stock of handmade wrapping/crafting/whatever paper, lots and lots of stamps and invitation paper, and all kinds of other crazy arts n' crafts crap. What can I say? i'm an addict for paper and stationary and kitschy gifts, and this store fills that need. Ok, so the price of paper or invitations can be a little more than expected (go to Target if your basic coworker is leaving or not so favorite sibling is having a B-day) but go HERE if you want that memorable, handmade (handwrapped) box or invitation that'll make an impression. Random, they also have lots of stuff for scrap booking, wrapping paper, notes, rubber stamps, etc. Also, they routinely have classes and workshops on how to make fancy things out of paper. I went into the store reluctantly as I feared finding something else I desired. I thought about my thousands of papers at home, unused and some duplicated because I'm such an impulse buyer. Although the collection of Japanese-style paper and eclectic gift-wrappers were calling my name, I managed to stay away from taking out my credit card from my empty wallet. But then I bumped into their fun selections of books and crafts, and then I thought it was over. I ran out of envelopes and came back to purchase some more, but they were out of stock (I'm assuming I cleaned them out of it LOL!) Whether it's wedding invites or Christmas cards or photo albums, they have a great selection for those who are creative. I like their collection of stamps, ink pads, and embossing supplies.
