The cone didn't taste like anything to me (it may have been overpowered by the ice cream), but it was very light and crispy. If I weren't told beforehand, I probably wouldn't be able to tell that the dessert was made from goat milk at all--overall, a nice refreshing dessert and a great way to finish off a meal at Chelsea Market! read more

Halva heaven at last! For people who grew up around this savory/sweet sesame treat then you know what's up. My mom used to warn me against eating too much as the richness catches up to you quick. We were given samples of their goat milk tahini ice cream, which was excellent, but I had my eye on the 10+ flavors of halvah laid out before me. I chose ginger, he chose coffee, and we agreed on black sesame to get the 3-flavors-for-1 deal. I wasn't shocked to be unimpressed by the coffee flavor, since as far as I'm concerned coffee goes well with one thing - itself. I was shocked to be unimpressed by the ginger, which I love on everything. To locate it on my tongue at all, I had to roll each bite around - it was barely there. Nice store located in the Chelsea Market. They offer, among other things, an excellent selection of Halvah. I have enjoyed Halvah since I was a little kid almost 60 years ago. I have had this confection in several different Middle Eastern countries. Seed and Mill's is among the best. It is sweet, rich and fragrant. I ordered a small piece of several different Halvahs. My favorites were the rose oil, pistachio and sesame. The only negative, if you consider it a negative, is some of the Halvahs are very crumbly and fall apart when picking them up and holding them. Being located inside Chelsea market is a little annoying because it was tough to find parking and then walking through the market to look for it was annoying as well. Seed + Mill was the surprise highlight of my trip to Chelsea Market today, and totally worth the 2.5 mile roundtrip walk from my hotel. This little gem was apparently featured on the front page of the NY Times Food section this morning (unbeknownst to me), but now having tried their goods I can see why! Since it was my first time with halva I got a sampling of the pistachio, chocolate orange and peanut butter. The photo is of the last bits left over... Those, too, were gobbled up seconds later. I wish I'd gotten more! My better half has apparently been a lifelong fan of halva but had only ever tried marble and vanilla. The flavors at Seed + Mill are vast and beautiful! Of the ones I got, the chocolate orange was probably my favorite, followed very closely by the peanut butter and then the pistachio. The gentleman who worked the counter was awesome - really warm and welcoming (and he let me sample the soft serve - OMG delicious), and the ladies were very sweet and helpful. If I'd had a freezer in my hotel room, or if I'd had the time to sit and enjoy it on the spot, I would have gotten some soft serve as well. Goat milk and tahini together?! Divine. Now I just have to hope they open in LA so I don't have to travel cross-country to get my fix. read more

I'd had never had Halva before and had no idea what it was. This was the perfect place to visit as they have about fifteen different flavors and their staff is friendly enough to explain everything! Not to mention they encourage you to sample. So Halva is basically fudge that is made from tahini and sugar. It is super, super sweet, but the consistency is different. It is soft and chewable, but it has more of a crumble or flaky-mess than actual Fudge. Unfortunately, just like fudge, they only want to sell you enormous pieces. I really wish I could walk away with about three bite sized pieces. But it's a half pound or nothing. I ended up getting the half pound sampler - three different flavored chunks all adding up to a half pound. It was really fun sampling all the flavors and trying something new. But I must admit that what I bought was actually way too much sweetness for me and I couldn't finish it. read more

You know how some people have a gene where they just don't like cilantro? I might have the same gene for this halva - not for sesame because I LOVE sesame. The types I've tasted at seed + mill have quite a bitter taste to them, I assume because they really toast the sesame seeds. I now have a quarter pound of pistachio halva and salted caramel halva that I'm slowly eating not because I particularly enjoy it, but because I hate wasting food. Before you ask, when I purchased these two, I asked if I could have a sample of each, but they said they were only sampling the chocolate halva (which I also didn't particularly like, but I attributed that to the chocolate, not the halva). But I just don't get it - I love halva - I guess seed + mill just doesn't do it for me. And that's ok! I salute them for their flavor diversity and for the great concept. I'm grateful to have tasted these, and while it's not my cup of tea, clearly they have a following! One suggestion I have is to improve their packaging. Holy moly my small pieces had like 6 different pieces of tape on it. I had to get out the scissors in order to open them when I got home. read more

Mmm... Halva! This was my first time trying it and it was sooo good! I've always seen it in Middle Eastern grocery stores but never got it. I tried the Coconut (vegan), Pistachio (most popular), Coconut Chocolate, and Matcha Rose Petal. I also tried their goat milk soft serve which was pretty good. Much richer than your typical ice creams. They sell it in 1/4 lbs. and you can choose up to 3 flavors. I ended up getting the coconut and pistachio. The coconut has a nice light flavor which I think most people would appreciate - I could have done with more coconut flavor. The pistachio was yummy too; a little crumblier with pieces of pistachio mixed in. If you're in the Chelsea Market I recommend stopping by to at least sample some flavors! read more

My favorites are the coffee, pistachio, and caco nib flavors. Each day, they offer samples of a few of the flavors--its nice to try before you buy. Seed and Mill also serves goat milk soft serve which I am a huge fan of. They don't serve this everyday/sometimes run out early so it is hit or miss if the soft serve is available. This is a feel-good review from the holidays. I'm a personal assistant that sends out numerous gifts for Hanukkah and Christmas. Needless to say the Halva is top-notch and all the gift recipients were thrilled to receive it and remarked at how amazingly delicious it was. But the real-story is the old-school amazing customer service of Seed + Mill. I wanted to send one of their gift boxes of Halva to a recipient in Australia so I emailed customer service to check if they could mail to Australia. Rachel, the founder, emailed me back and said, no, unfortunately, they didn't mail to Australia. But then she also asked where in Australia as she was flying to Sydney in a few short days and could possibly drop it off if it was close by in Sydney. Talk about a small world! My recipient was indeed a few minutes around the corner from where Rachel was staying. Rachel took the halva gift box with her and after confirming the recipients were home, had the gift box dropped off. I'm still beyond charmed. Seed + Mill is clearly the company that goes that extra mile and understands what it takes to thrive in today's market. And because of this, as a personal assistant, this will be one of my go-to vendors when I need to send out a gift. Let me just close by saying thank you to Rachel. Hands down my favorite dessert in Chelsea--the goat milk soft serve with halva bits. It tastes super fresh and not overpoweringly sweet with great textures from the halva. A very refreshing treat for any occasion. People working at Seed + Mill are also very friendly and patient--I suppose you'd have to be with so many tourists milling around (pun intended, I guess?), asking to try all of their flavors (yes, I do this too .. oops), and being incredibly indecisive with their orders. Not going to lie, I've been behind so many people who would ask the employees for the entire life story of halva and how you eat halva when most of their questions could easily be answered if they just read the text on the wall. I have often gotten impatient with the people in front of me and left the line when I already knew what I wanted to order, but this may be for the better or else I would probably eat here every day. We sampled a few types of halva, but were just too full to try the goat milk ice cream (with hlava toppings of course)...next time! Hlava is a sweet confection that is made from tahini paste. As such, it has a distinct sesame taste, that is somewhat reminiscent of peanut butter. This dense and crumbly dessert is offered in several flavors at Seed + Mill, including: marble, dark chocolate, salted caramel, pistachio, dates, etc.. Several flavors were vegan, though certainly not all of them. Stop by Seed + Mill when your at the Chelsea Market for a hell-of-a good dessert...well there you have it...worth a visit AND I almost made it through the review without the obligatory hell-of-a hlava comments. read more

Yes!! I LOVE halva and was excited to finally try their fun flavours. I've never heard of white chocolate raspberry halva or peanut butter halva! Unfortunately you can only sample the plain so I took a chance and got slices of the white chocolate, salted chocolate, pistachio, and rose. All four were good, but next time I would pass on the white chocolate. Rose was amazing as well as the pistachio! I also sampled the goat yogurt and it was deeelicious! The most exciting part of this food adventure was getting a jar of tahini milled right in front of me! I checked my suitcase at the airport just for this jar and let me tell you ....it was worth it!
