Unquestionably the worst customer service experience I have ever had…read more My external hard drive with about 500 GB of data on it crashed. I know my way around computers and I could tell that the internal power source failed and that the disk was not malfunctioning, so it shouldn't be difficult to recover the data. MicroCenter convinced me to allow them to ship my drive out to DataTech to recover all of my files. I did so and here's what happened: After initially looking at my drive, DataTech called and told me: (1) My drive looked liked a routine fix, just as I had thought, (2) All data should be recoverable, (3) The recovery process would take less than a week, and (4) It would cost $1,000. Here's what really happened: (1) They had my drive for FOUR months, (2) They recovered 0% of the data on my drive (!!!), (3) It cost $1,700, not $1,000, (4) Throughout this long process there was nothing but misinformation and excuses communicated to me, and that was only when they actually responded to my phone calls and emails, which was not often. But wait, here's the kicker: Their data recovery process actually further damaged my drive even MORE and corrupted files that were not previously damaged. The rep on the phone actually told me this (I'm pretty sure on accident --- it sounded like it just slipped out), and another data recovery service I later took my drive to also confirmed this. So 4 months and $1,700 later, DataTech actually returned my drive in WORSE condition that it was when they received it. They salvaged 0% of my files. They finally agreed to refund my money and they seemed very proud of themselves for doing this. Gee, thanks for not charging me $1,700 to break my hard drive even more! I gave DataTech 1 star only because 0 stars was not an option. Do yourself a favor and don't ever use DataTech.

They sent my drive to Colorado (?) without telling me that it was leaving the state and then changed my quote multiple times. It started at $600 and went all the way up to $7,000 for a full recovery that wasn't even guaranteed. They charged me a $200 fee just to analyze the drive. I will say that the manager at Micro center was really great handling my concern but that was the only positive in the whole experience. Then I worked with Chris McMacken at Secure Data Recovery who has been awesome! The experience has been entirely different and he has been helpful every step of the way. Luckily they were able to retrieve most of my data at a much cheaper cost. Its very difficult to find honest data recovery-but I would highly recommend them!! It's very nice to have an assigned account rep managing your job so you don't feel like another random customer lost in the crowd. I'm a photographer so my data was very important to me-I had a lot of old files containing my portfolio and special images that I can never get back. Chris was really understanding and helpful in managing my concerns.

Followed up again on the fifth day leaving again voicemail and email, again no response from the representative. 6th day called main number and finally spoke to a tech. I sent the laptop in. When it came back, I could no longer get into the BIOS nor access a USB key. They also sent back a bag with 7 screws. I sent several e-mails asking what they did so I could fix it. I was told they only take out the SSD/HD and the screws were for the mounting. Both drives were screwed down so the screws must have been from something else. After getting no response from my e-mails I called and talked to manager George. He said it isn't their responsibility. He offered to have me send it back and they would put the screws in but would not guarantee that I would be able to get into the BIOS. I only want to get it back to where it was before I shipped to them. Don't send your laptop/PC.
