Okay, this is a longer one but as an avid thrifter and experienced (and fair) reseller myself, I think that this place necessitates a particular conversation. My thoughts- I've stopped into Second Wind a few times over the years in search of gear/clothing for personal use, but have consistently walked away disappointed if not empty-handed because their pricing is exorbitant and stupidly inflated, and I have no shame in using that sort of verbiage. An example from today that caught me so off guard I did some research, subsequently leading me to writing this review- a heavily used & visibly stained/faded Patagonia vest listed at $115, which is $16 less than the retail price on Patagonia's own website ($131). In my opinion and personal experience, this is not an isolated case- a lot of their merchandise is significantly worn, sometimes even dirty, and still priced like it's barely been used. While I did find and purchase a cute pair of pants that were reasonably priced and in good shape today, it unfortunately doesn't negate the general pattern of overpricing. Selling gear in highly used and rough condition for near-retail prices undermines the whole point of secondhand shopping and if we're being honest, many locals have access to outdoor industry discounts that include the benefit of full warranties. Trying to resell deeply used gear at near-retail prices just feels exploitative in that context. Even online secondhand platforms like Depop tend to be far more equitably priced and transparent about quality. I'm all for supporting secondhand and local businesses, but not when it starts to feel greedy and borderline shady. Pricing like this erodes trust and defeats the purpose of resale. There are more transparent, affordable, and community-minded options out there-- please shop around. read more

Fantastic second-hand shop for all kinds of great outdoor gear. I scored a pair of swix xc gloves for $10!! As well as some lululemon leggings & carhartt sweatpants. This is my favorite place to hit up first anytime I come to Bozeman. I always find something amazing. Their boots & bottom layers selections are particularly good. read more

This store is crammed full of mostly used sporting equipment with an emphasis on clothing and packs of all shapes and sizes. The place is a bit cluttered but that adds to the fun of searching for that item you want. The prices seem okay - not cheap and not too high. You may not save a ton of money shopping there but at least you are recycling gear and clothes that might otherwise be trash. read more

Shady folks working this location checked out with a pair of skates that were 10 dollars on the tag just to pay upwards of 40 at the register. When I noticed I came back they told me it is what it is and that there was nothing they could do because they are a consignment store. I have consigned several items at a different second wind location and I know that they make the price at the store not from the owner of the item. Completely Disappointed! I was referred to this place to sell lightly used sports gear. We have gear for every sport. My husband stopped in and the guy at the desk (who copped a major attitude) wouldn't even take a minute to look at what he brought (and there wasn't anybody in the store). They've gone downhill, unfortunately. Potential to be a true Bozeman gem for the outdoorsy and active...but other reviews are accurate. Messy, yes. Overpriced, yes. I've had mixed experiences with employees, but overall, I think they're groovy. Any name brand (Sitka, Patagonia, Fjallraven, Marmot, etc.) is still 80% of what you'd pay retail for brand new, your size, your color, with warranty and without wear/tear or dirt ground in. So smart people are moving to online shopping PRECISELY because places like this get greedy. Used stuff with mud and body odor still clinging to the outdoor-wear, should not be almost full retail price. C'mon guys...whoever started the store had the right idea, but you're doing the Bozeman cash-grab, which won't equate to longevity for your little shop. I love this place. The selection is awesome, and you're bound to find some quality/quirky items here. I also love being able to sell my outdoor stuff here. It's not a polished place, but that's why I like it. The employees are laid back and helpful. They're not going to wine and dine you to buy something, but they're down to earth and seem like people you'd go skiing with or whatever choice recreational activity. If you're looking for "vintage" Patagucci to drive up to Hyalite, walk ten steps from the car and take #adventure shots for your instagram feed and head back to town, then you'll probably find some sweet duds here for that. I have sold items through the shop in the past and have had no issues. But recently I was told I would receive a certain dollar amount once my item had sold. Once the item had sold, I was told I would receive a check for 90 dollars less than the price I had originally been told. The person behind the counter was completely unwilling to admit any wrong doing on their part and would not budge on the dollar amount. I understand that they likely misquoted me when I left my item there for consignment, but I do not understand how their mistake should put me out $90. Their unwillingness to work with me frustrates me even more than the monetary loss. I will be taking my business somewhere trustworthy in the future. read more

I was in there today looking to buy fly rods and reels. While at the counter, an employee was carelessly throwing a pen approximately 15 ft away from me trying to hit a small container next to me. My teenagers insisted I come in here to check it out. They have lots of used sports equipment and clothing. I was more looking for clothes. The store smelled, but I would guess it's from not washing the clothes before the hung them on the rack. For used clothes I thought pricing was on the higher end. I can find better deals on the net or locally elsewhere. My kids say it's the best place in Bozo for reasonably priced used sports equipment though. I gave them a 4 though because their selections and variety are huge!! They are a few blocks off the beaten path, but if you are looking for something specific, might be worth the stop. read more

Great store, prices are steep but the gear is of good quality. They don't take junk in and that is reflected in their pricing. They also don't take returns so look close before buying. All the gear I have bought from them has been great; basically new or gently used. All and all an excellent gear shop for someone with a little change but not wanting to spend a bunch for new gear. read more

Unbelievably messy & so much stuff squeezed on racks & on the floor. They have soooo much stuff because they are so overpriced!! You can buy a used down jacket for $200 plus or get one for the same price on Sierra Trading Post. I'd never take my stuff there, it will just end up on the floor. Called about a Yakima roof rack system, the gentleman I spoke to told me they had a certain size that didn't exist. So I called back to get the right size and the woman I spoke with told me she was to busy to talk, that I should just drive down. I explained I didn't plan to drive 45 minutes to town if they didn't have the right size. She informed me she had a store full of customers and couldn't be bothered to check, that I needed to drive in and just see. Not impressed and will never spend a dime here. read more

This could be a great store - they have a really eclectic mix of cool gear. The prices aren't low, but they would be reasonable for top-quality used equipment. Unfortunately some of the gear is far from top-quality and they have an iron "No Returns" policy - even on defective items! Nor do they test things before selling them. Bizarrely, the owner even said to us "Of course we don't test things before we sell them. Look at all the stuff we have.". She also said many other things that were a lot ruder. So, if you do decide to shop here: 1) Check everything carefully before buying. 2) Test each item thoroughly as soon as you get it home. 3) Use a credit card so that you can dispute the charges if you have to. 4) Be prepared for the owner to be unbelievably abusive if you do try and return something. But really you'd be better off shopping at garage sales. read more

I've been in their shop a handful of times now, and the service has been hit or miss to navigate the disorganized cluster of stuff they have for sale...Each time with my service animal. Until today, when who appeared to be the owner or manager told me that dogs were not allowed, I kindly explained that she was a service animal...she replied bothered and made up excuses like that there wasn't enough room in in their two story building. I agree, prices are a bit steep on some newer items. Frequently, you can find prices lower online for the same items. And yet, I always stop in when I'm in town because they have such a mix of items I can always find something that completely meets my needs. I'm glad this place exists. read more

I wanted to let everyone know how much I appreciate a store like this and was very upset to see the previous review. I travel from AZ to MT every summer and make it a point to stop at Becky's store every year to restock on gear; you cannot beat the wide selection of items and the great bargains'! I have found Becky and her staff to be very friendly and helpful in finding items as well as having a pleasant demeanor. I'll be back next year for sure!! Theft is a problem with any retail business, my family had a sporting goods store growing up and it was a major cost of doing business, I do not understand why anyone would take offense to measures that counter this. I also would question their reasoning for posting such a personal attack, obviously there is more to the story. I have not sold any items so I have no idea of what the policy is, but it should be defined and clarified at the time of the transaction, if it is not clear is should be. read more

I've been a 2nd Wind Sports customer for 13 years. I've sold/bought probably over $1000 worth of camping gear in the store over the years. I recently had a $200 bivy sack on consignment at the store, and it was stolen. Apparently there has been a theft spree in 2nd Wind Sports as there was a sign at the checkout. At any rate, when I inquired with the manager as to whether there was compensation, she said sometimes and it was up to the owner, Becky. I wasn't expecting much, maybe an apology, some store credit or $20 or something. Becky the owner called and informed me due the high volume of theft that she would be unable to compensate me in any way. No apology. No store credit. No nothing. I'm disappointed at her lack of customer service because I'd like to keep my business local. But, I will never step foot in 2nd Wind Sports again. eBay here I come! read more

I was in around Christmas casually looking for a skate ski setup, and came out with a pair of skate skis that are perfectly sized, recently built, and super cheap! Brad expertly guided me through the decision-making process (he knows a TON about skate skiing, I know pretty much nothing), and I loved how he was simultaneously full of information, totally attentive, and yet not pushy at all. If you are in Bozeman MT and are looking for outdoor gear you got to check this place out. I friend sent me to Second Wind to find some vintage ski bindings that were no longer made, I was blown away by all the used outdoor gear they stock. They have used skis, snowboards, backpacks, bicycles, rock climbing gear, kayaks, you name it, this place has it. Their staff is a bunch of outdoor junkies that know ski and bike gear and have always been very helpful fitting me with the right gear. They will sell your old gear on consignment. It's made trading up a lot more affordable. This store is a great alternative to selling on ebay or craigs list. Just drop off your old gear and they sell it and give you cash or store credit. I don't think they have a website yet. read more

I went there to get skis and boots for our family (3 children and 2 adults). What I didn't expect to receive was RUDE service from the staff, to the point where we walked out, leaving our purchases of about $400 at the counter. One staff member in particular was completely unreasonable and nasty towards us and my young children and even said "how dare you bring your children in on a day like this". It was Saturday afternoon, when else am I supposed to bring them?? My children were not running around the store breaking stuff, they were playing with ski goggles that we were going to purchase when she said this. I have never been treated like this in my life. I will not be making any purchases at this store again, clearly they don't need any business. First of all, Lia, you are obviously not familiar with the policy of many stores in and around Bozeman who do require you to leave your backpacks at the door. You must not have lived here very long. I also wonder why you have chosen to continue to go to Second Wind if you thought the customer service was so bad and there is at least one other consignment shop in Bozeman.Hmm, that seems very questionable and to expose your children to this so called harassment?! Secondly, I know Becky, and have been in her store and have found she has a great attitude towards people in general and is known in a very positive light around town. She gives back to the community through running her store the way she does and through donations to different organizations throughout Bozeman. I believe you need to look in the mirror and figure out why you find it necessary to slam Becky and Second Wind in this way.
